I know how much you love draft strategy (do you?  Yeah, of course you do!).  Whether it’s snake draft or auction draft.  You gobble this shizz up.  Okay, I wasn’t speaking literally, take the corner of your computer monitor out of your mouth.  Auction drafts are the best.  They’re like that time you followed a man with a pony tail into the gym locker room only to realize his broad shoulders were that of a large lesbian and you were in the women’s locker room and had to run out.  Happy accidents!  So, lots of you know my fantasy baseball auction tips already, but some of you just joining us — Hey, close the door behind you!  Were you raised in a barn? — may not.  Lots of the strategy for my snake drafts also applies here.  If you ask me — and you kinda did ask me by reading this shizz — auction drafts are where it’s at, yo!  You get in a room with your best fantasy baseball buddies.  The guys you haven’t seen since last year’s draft.  The guys you don’t want to see until next year’s draft.  One guy, and there’s always one, has to show you why the Droid is better than the iPhone.  Then you have the guy who will go the extra dollar for (fill-in favorite player from his favorite team).  You know that’s his favorite player because he’s wearing his jersey.  There’s also the guy who wears a jersey of a player he would never draft from a team he hates just to throw you off his scent, only he points this out to show you how clever he thinks he is; he’s not.  There’s the guy that makes you question why you’re even friends with him.  There’s the guy who has a solar calculator and insists on sitting by the window.  There’s the guy who is allergic to cats and, even though there’s no cat, insists someone’s clothes are ‘covered in dander.’  There’s the guy who brings healthy snacks and something with bean sprouts that he says is wrapped in a lavash just so no one will ask him for any of it.  There’s the guy on Skype because he has to babysit, which makes for a crying baby in the background of the entire draft.  And, of course, you have the guy who brings only Cheetos and turns everything he touches orange, and, if he touches something that was already orange, he makes it oranger.  Through all of this, it always turns out, this day is the best day of the year.  As for online auction drafts, they’re just a’ight.  Anyway, here’s some tried and true tips to help you through your auction fantasy baseball draft:

1. Early in the draft, throw out guys that you know you have no interest in that will cost others a lot.

Say Pablo Sandoval was eating at your favorite fast food restaurant and because he ate the entire buffet himself there was none for you, so now you don’t want to draft him.  So the first name you should nominate is “I Can’t Get No Panda Express Because Of You” Panda for a $1 and let others overspend on him.  You don’t want high-priced pitching?  Nominate Kershaw.  You think Robinson Cano is overrated?  Nominate him.  You get the idea.  When no one I hate is left, I throw out positions I no longer need or want.  Already have a shortstop and MI?  Then nominate a shortstop.  Just make sure you nominate a guy for a dollar that you know will go for more.  You don’t want to nominate a player that you don’t want and end up having them as your utility.

2. Go the extra dollar if you really want someone.

When you get to the end of the auction, no one has any flippin’ idea what they spent to get a guy.  If you want Kolten Wong and every auction value article you’ve read says he’s worth $12 and the bidding’s just gone to $16, go to $17 if you want him.  It’s your team; you need certain guys whether they’re overpriced or not.

3. You want to be “rich” with auction money.

You won’t always have the most money at the draft, but, whenever possible, you want to.  The more money you have A) The better leverage you have attaining any guy you might want. B) You can get great buys late in the draft when no one else has any money.  Invariably, someone will throw out, say, Steven Souza for a dollar (or some player that they think they can sneak through). Then you get Souza for $2 and everyone in the draft room groans, wishing they still had some money.  At your draft, you want to be like the little tuxedoed guy from Monopoly.  In fact, dress like him for your draft.

4. Decent catchers and closers are even easier to acquire in auctions.

In a snake draft, you never know when Salvador Perez, Wieters, Addison Reed, Nathan or whoever is going to be drafted.  The beauty of the auction is you can have anyone.  In my experience, you should wait until most of the teams have filled up their closers or catcher(s) slot then you nominate some cheaper guys. This works especially well for catchers.

5. Keep track of who other people want.

You know exactly what everyone else is thinking.  If Joe Schmohawk goes to $12 on Arrieta and you get him for $13, keep J.S. in mind when you’re looking to trade Arrieta after his hot 1st half.  If someone groans when you get Chris Owings, keep it in mind.  Unless it’s the same guy who’s been eating nothing but Cheetos for ten hours. Then it might just be gas.

  2. CaptStache says:

I like to buy 1 or two of the first guys (if it’s someone I’d want) nominated cuz even though they’re high priced, they’re cheaper than later in the draft. Everyone is still paranoid about spending.

Also, if I’m in a bidding war against someone for a player and they are hemming and hawing and stressing over the next $1, I like to throw my next bid immediately after his. Keeps him uncomfortable…and the look on his face is priceless.

Disagree 100%. Sure they wanted them prior to the season, prior to any real stats are accumulated and you are drooling at guesswork projections. Once the season starts, you won’t be able to leverage that interest unless the player is actually performing. Besides, you should be seeking the best trade available, not just the trade who you remember someone being interested.

      Apples and rutabagas, sir.

      • PK says:
        (link)

@Hmm: If you think the player you have is over-performing, then the manager who coveted them on draft day is a fantastic trade partner to target.

        • Hmm says:
          (link)

@PK: Sure, but I believe my “unless they’re performing” blurb covered that. The point is that they may not give you the best offer so you shouldn’t exclusively jump to that owner but feel around to see who really needs help at the players respective position, which imo is more relevant in this context.

Would you recommend keeping the closers and just call out closers at my turn to make the others spend money or just keep one or two? Thanks

league format question here not exactly sure how to adjust my usual strategy:

last year we had OBP% and total bases each as their seperate category, (along with other batting categories runs/rbis,/hr’s, etc) this year theres a proposal to switch to OPS in order to eliminate the total bases category as it’s already being accounted for by a home-run.

now i’m new to fantasy baseball but isn’t OPS essentially a combination of Total Bases and on base percentage? please correct if wrong.

also a change from sb’s to net stolen bases, and saves to saves+holds. has there been a thread started looking at sb success rate or middle relievers that i missed so i can read up on these guys?

    as always thanks.

    • bigbear says:
      (link)

@pickleball: You’re right. It’s essentially the same thing.

Adding in holds is a pretty big change, IMO. Not necessarily a good/bad change, just a significant one. It opens up a ton of new players and puts them on par with whoever has the closer gig. If you do that, closer values should drop a ton. I wouldn’t even draft one because they tend to be overvalued because they’re known more. Just poach a few high K rate set up guys late.

We’re using net SB and net SV this year in one of my leagues. It’s the first time I’ve done that. I’ve already received some complaints because people like to know the counting stats can’t be taken away. It’ll probably take away some value from speed guys (but I think SBs and SVs are overrated anyway in baseball).

      • Mantis Toboggan MD says:
        (link)

@bigbear: you need guys that don’t run stupidly, and get caught a lot. You’ll need to delve deeper into steal % and such. OPS is a total bases per at bat stat, not just total bases. Also, in net steals leagues, be more careful rostering a shitty closer, since a blown save actually takes away from an actual save; so in some weeks Hawkins/Reed or somebody like them could actually take saves away from other good closers.

  12. pickleball says:
    (link)

in a keeper auction leagues do you adjust your keeper strategy based on how much someone costs to keep (the short answer is yes i know) but do you change it enough to start to keep pitchers over hitters just based on their value.

for instance i could keep jon lester at $10 or kluber at $16 over say bryce harper at $40… or should i just throw back all pitching and redraft it… keeping all hitters. (we can keep 7 people)

    • bigbear says:
      (link)

@pickleball: I would go with value. Kluber at $16 is good value as he’ll probably go for more than that this year. Lester seems like a good value, but I’m not sure his stock really goes up this year. So if he was drafted for $10 last year in your league, there’s a good chance he’ll be around there this year.

@Wake Up: I like having a few extra dollars to outbid the $1 only guys. I don’t want to risk someone getting a late-round flyer that I really wanted because I didn’t have an extra dollar. I’d rather leave a few bucks on the table if it means having the team I want

      • @Cram It: What I’m saying is if get $260 to buy around $300 and it takes you $255 to buy $300, you prolly should have spent $260 to get $305

        • Cram It says:
          (link)

@Wake Up: Maybe. I don’t have enough auction experience to know when to draw the line of how many $1 players I want.
I do know that if that $5 I didn’t use got me all the mid/lower tier guys that I really wanted instead of using it on the 1 top tier guy, I’m okay with that.

Looking for some advice on “pitching tiers discipline”. I’m definitely a disciple and know who to target but my 12 team 5×5 are pretty straight by the book (Yahoo ADP) and so there’s tons of “value”.

Wihtout reaching I could likely get Samardz (6), Carrasco (9), Wheeler (15), Shoemaker (16), McHugh (18), Salazar (19) and if I miss out I can grab any of Pineda, Smyly, Shelby, PEralta or Cingrani.

Based on your rankings that’s better than a pitcher tiers grab of say, Wood, Shoe, deGrom, Archer, Quintana and Peralta and cheaper too so I therefore thought this is the way to go.

But then I reread your post about the “glue tiers” like your Bridge Building tier and this strategy overlooks balance.

To make a long question even longer, I can get a higher ranked (by Grey) player like Wheeler later and cheaper than someone like Ryu. Would it also be better to grab the better player or should I be looking more closely at pitching balance (ratios vs Ks)?

    1. In an N/L only auction 10 team roto league cbs scoring, would you keep cole hamels at $17. I am worried about him getting traded to an American league team or do you throw him back and use the $17 on another pitcher.

    2. In 12 team roto mixed league, cbs scoring 5OF 1C 2U, 9P, snake draft I have the following keepers
    Ian Desmond 11
    Billy hamilton 12
    Chris Davis 16
    Dee Gordon 17

    Adam Jones

Going to try and get myself in an auction league this year. Always intrigued me; generally been a draft guy but the auction, says the guy with no experience (me), seems like you are able to ‘control’ who you draft more so than a ‘snake’ draft.
Trade Question for you; ESPN 5X5, 6 man keeper (Keep forever no penalties/inflation etc), Standard Starting Lineup; 5 of’s, 5 SP’s, 4 RP’s, 1 utility (any position).
My keepers currently; Stanton, Cutch, Goldy, Donaldson, Arenado and Braun (other possibilities include Kipnis, Aroldis, Baez, Bryant)
The offer; his Puig and Price for my Donaldson and Braun. I am firmly entrenched in the ‘pitching is so deep’ camp, but as a 6th keeper Price seems like OK value. In addition and like you I have Puig and Donaldson close in the overall ranks but Puig is obviously the better keeper. And as a bonus, I don’t have to protect two 3rd sackers, thus freeing up my utility position for the draft. I guess I’m kinda talking myself into accepting. However, curious your thoughts? Thanks for all your hard work!

@ashtray: I understand we don’t trust spring training results, and this was only one game. However, I have to say I was impressed. He hit that ball a long way off a reasonably competent MLB pitcher (Estrada), and he hit it to right center. Most of us are getting our first look at Kang and don’t really have any basis for evaluating his numbers in Korea. Might we make a small exception for Kang–i.e. we bump him a little bit up our draft boards if he continues to looks good in spring training? I’m thinking of bending this long-standing rule for myself.

        • Mostsuckass says:
          (link)

@Grey: Yeah, I remember. Sigh. Then again, so did Brantley. I mean, obviously I’m not going to take Kang over Desmond or Tulowitski. But if he looks good in the spring, might I take a risk and grab him over Peralta or Zobrist? I’m thinking about it. Then again, I realize that some managers in my league will get caught up in the hype and take him a lot sooner than I will, so perhaps the point is moot.

@Mostsuckass: did you see estrada last year, if not go check all the other MLB players who hit homers off him, you won’t like a lot of the names you find. He may have had worst homer rate of all pitchers when he started last year.

        • A Wesley Snipes Life says:
          (link)

@A Wesley Snipes Life: who’s even sure he gets decent at bats yet? kang i mean. That would be one way to learn a lesson about spring training though, you draft Kang as if he’s a starter, find out when season starts he isn’t, and end up learning the real lesson of the preseason, jose ramirez is available in all leagues not 20 deep and will have value and start till lindor takes his job.

          • Mostsuckass says:
            (link)

@A Wesley Snipes Life: I don’t have any plans to draft Kang ahead of Jose Ramirez, but I do plan to watch him more than I watch Ramirez, because Kang has no MLB experience to provide any perspective for my ranking him. In any case he’ll be a deep-ish flier for me and not a guy I’d count on. But I might be a little more excited about him after watching him play yesterday. He made an impression.

At the same time I don’t want to throw awesome sauce on somebody else’s sandwich..so can you recommend 6 keepers from this crew? Hey Grey,

My league has been doing auctions for years, so most guys have a good handle on them. I’ve found that sometimes throwing a guy out there early in the auction, who may not be ranked at #1 at his position (think like a Wilin Rosario or Starling Marte) that you want for your team, yields a lower price.

My thinking on this is that you’ll get more serious bidders on those guys when the pickings get slimmer because guys missed out on their original target.

    Thoughts on this strategy?

Appreciate the insight. Can’t wait for the season to start.

Auction keeper question. AL-only, 6×6 (OPS & holds), roto league. Finished last year in 3rd and am out for revenge. $260 draft budget.

I can hold onto 7 and currently plan on keeping:
    -Grande Dolor (28)
    -Altuve (24)
    -Rusney Castillo (11)
    -Calhoun (5)
    -Stroman (5)
    -Phil Hughes (6)
    -Smyly (6)

    Other potential options include:
    -Eaton (18)
    -Zobrist (21)
    -Beltre (40)
    -Alex Gordon (28)
    -Trevor Bauer (15)
    -Perkins (17)
    -Jose Ramirez (7)
    -Jason Castro (8)
    -Conor Gillaspie (3)

    1. Would you make any changes?
    2. If not, of those first 7, am I keeping anyone that I shouldn’t be? I.e. does your auction rule #3 change in keeper leagues, making it preferable to have extra money as opposed to a sure player?

      • Bobby says:
        (link)

It’s a standard 5×5 roto league. You can keep players for 3 years. Here is what years I can keep each player: Kluber (2015, 2016), Brantley (2015, 2016), Freeman (2015), Pence (2015)

As for those players I am deciding about:
        Reyes (2015)
        Machado (2015, 2016)
        Arrieta (2015, 2016)

            • J-FOH says:
              (link)

@Bobby: with only two years of keeper availability I like the pairing of Kluber and Arieta. This allows you to focus on your bats early and tackle pitching later, which, IMO, is not a bad strategy considering that Machado is a higher risk for 2015 with his injury issues. If this was a long term keeper it would be easy to choose Machado.

Assuming your auction values are based on a budget of $260… if my budget is $300 where do you feel the extra $40 should be added? Should it be evenly spread amongst the roster? Or does it mean the higher rated guys are worth more? Ex. Trout = 60

I know it’s not auction related, but I needed advice on a trade that I am waffling on. 16 team, 30 man roster, H2H, 7×7 (obp, hits, holds, IP) dynasty, keeping 25 each year. I am heavy in pitching with Kershaw, Strasburg, Kluber, Arrieta, Richards, Bailey, Keuchel, Porcello, Norris as starters with a dominant bullpen as well. My batters are Mesoraco, Fielder, Gordon, Baez/Zobrist, Seager, JD Martinez, Bruce, Arcia, Austin Jackson, Polanco, Leonys Martin in OF and Brandon Moss on my bench. I was trying to acquire Ryan Zimmerman for 3B protection/trading chip with Paxton for Bailey and Mejia (who is my at least fourth closer). Here’s some mixed league 15 team $260 auction data. These prices are the average of as many 15 team mixed auctions as I could find I took the 15 most expensive players and called that round 1, the 15 next most expensive and called that round 2 etc. The numbers below are the round, the average $ paid for a player in that round and the average $ produced by the players who finished the season in that round. So in other words, looking at the difference between how much you can expect to pay for players and how much production you would expect based on last year’s final production numbers. This is in no way player specific just looking at cost vs production averages.

Oh how you been by the way?? Anyway I Won 2 years ago in my only league but last year I won one of of 2. The one I lost I drafted batters in the first 4 rounds and waited on pitchers but the one I won I tried a different approach and drafted pitchers in the 1st and 3rd round cause I wanted to be staked with great pitching and still had good batting cause the early round batters were worse then the mid round ones except for a handful. I’m thinking about doing the same thing considering pitching is a HUGE part of a points league and knowing 20 points for a win with a point per K and inning minus 10 points per loss, -1 point per BB, HR, and so on.. I know you hate that approach but why??

    Auction strategy question…..ESPN -10 team/ $260 Auction./4 keepers
This is a conservative drafting group. 10 players drafted over $29, only 18 for $28-20.
Likely over $30-25 players left are – Trout, Harper, Encarnacion, Bautista, Jones, Miggy, Kershaw
Likely $24-20 after keepers are – Longoria, Seager, Dickerson, Cespedes,
Upton, AGonz, Cano, Brantley, Pence several pitchers (Stras, Sale, Feliz, Zimm, Cueto)
So most players are drafted are between $17-12.
Top $17-12 players include – Freeman, Sandoval, Gordon, Heyward, Myers, Castro, Duda, Santana, Kipnis, Wong, Ells, etc ,
Knowing this would you A) take one from the $30-25 group and a 2 or 3 from the $24-20 group. B) 2 from $30 and 1 or 2 from $24-20, C) take 3 or 4 from the $24-20 group, D) fill your entire roster with all $19-12 players? D) other (fill in what you other would be)

How do you deal with AVG concerns during your draft?

I’m finding it hard if you start with Rizzo, Encarncion, Bautista, Gomez, Giancarlo, or even Trout for instance and want to pair them with Rendon or Donaldson or Harper or JUpton or Desmond or any other number of guys who hit .270-ish. Or if you draft a low AVG first rounder, do you follow up with Beltre or Tulo or Puig or Brantley to counter their AVG?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      You don’t need a .300 average… .270ish is fine… You don’t want too many guys below that…

    Hello, Mr Albright.

As a long time reader and first – time commenter (there goes my razzball virginity) on one of your articles, I was wondering how you would approach a Standard Yahoo 5×5 Auction League?

I am thinking of getting a middle of the road type pitching staff (Getting 3 or 4 solid number 2’s with potential to be an ace and upside sleeper picks).

However, I am confounded as to how I should approach my offense with 10 slots to fill (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UTIL, UTIL) and how would you approach building an offense and allocating the $260 worth monopoly money assuming I go the traditional route and spend $160 on offense and $100 on pitching?

I appreciate your time and advice for answering my question.

    Harry

    • Grey

So I went back and read the blurbs, but couldn’t really tell.

Do you trust Fielder more than Votto to make a come back to relevance? Or is it just that his best case scenario is better than Votto’s?

Doing my first ever auction draft this year…mocked one today and learned a few things. First, auction drafts are goddamn interminable. Second, I wanted to get the great deals at the end of the draft so badly that I ended up filling my roster with $ to spare. Which really makes sense, because I ended up with some shizzy pitching.

So, to avoid such an outcome, do you estimate your budget for each position beforehand?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d go around $85-100 for pitching, depending on your competition and league size… They are very long, indeedie… I wouldn’t spend more than $30 in most leagues on any player… I usually don’t spend more than $22 on any pitcher

  73. McNulty says:

Hi Grey, since you mentioned the CBS expert drafts, Scott White’s pitching sleepers and busts very much resemble this site. His pitchers picks have changed quite dramatically since the past week or so. Just an observation…

love the hilarious prologue Grey.. we have the android guy who makes everyone’s eyes roll… we also have….

the guy with an old slow ass laptop running windows XP who always has flash issues and who consults with the android guy about which browser to use

the sandwich guy. shows up with a legit footlong and stuffs his face dropping lettuce all over his keyboard.

the guy that has a terrible internet connection every season and insists he clicked bid at the last second before he lost the bid.

and always last but not least, the guy who is late to the draft every season, so consistently his name is synonymous with the word “late”

earlier today i left a comment under a Vin Wins message, and cannot find where it was. I was inquiring if he knows anybody that might want to join a Razzball league (inverse stats, worst players are best), as i know he used to run the ones 2 years and longer ago. What’s his email? I’m trying to set up one of these and am having problems finding enough people.

After 14 years our league is doing an auction for the first time. We are also changing from saves to saves+holds. Do you have any strategy suggestions for saves+holds? My guess is that closers are still best to have but you can focus on lower quality (cheaper) closers and higher quality setup men. Any thoughts?

Punt saves, middle relievers that get holds are much cheaper

    Hey gents,

The season is quickly approaching and I need to decide on my keepers by midnight tonight. This is a 10 team H2H league with 6 offensive categories- Runs, HR, RBI, SB, BA, and OPS and 7 pitching categories- W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/9 and QS.

We can keep 5 players but if you have a player that is ROY eligible you can keep him as your 6th keeper.

I am definitely keeping Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, and Yasiel Puig. The final 2 keepers are a bit tough for me to choose. My options are Freddie Freeman (leaning towards keeping him), Adrian Gonzalez, Todd Frazier, Madison Bumgarner, Yu Darvish. I can also keep Jorge Soler as my 6th keeper because he is ROY eligible.

Who should be my final two keepers? And is Jorge Soler worth the equivalent of a 6th round pick? My gut says no, I feel like I can get him a little later on and my options in the 6th are a bit more attractive and have a greater track record. What to do, what to do?

    • B.J. says:
      (link)

@B.J.: or I can decide to keep only three and use the extra picks to grab two guys I like that weren’t kept. Having a really hard time with this.

    • Spammer Jay says:
      (link)

@B.J.: Freeman for sure. The question is Mabum or Fraizer. I would go Madbum. Leave Darvish out there for bait. You should be able to fin Xander waiting for you for 3B.

Yo Grey props for the strategy advice! You rule! Thanks. Think you could weigh in on some keeper options for me? Standard 5×5 plus batter Ks and OPS/L and QS for pitchers (7×7). $285 budget. Can Keep up to 3 years with annual $5 escalators.

    Pick 4:

    Cole Hamels – 21
    Jorge Soler – 14
    Pablo Sandoval – 13
    Devin Mesoraco – 12
    Ryu – 7
    Trumbo – 7
    Greg Polanco – 2
    Javier Baez – 1
    Danny Salazar – 1
    James Paxton – 0

Would definitely really appreciate the input!
