It always concerns me when I put too much faith in The Sciosciapath playing a guy that is under 25 years old. A bigger concern is one that is currently penciled in at DH. If Josh Hamilton gets a nagging injury, then he’s going to DH and C.J. Cron will be benched. Same, really, with any Angels player. The only one we don’t have to worry about is Pujols. Not because Pujols is guaranteed to stay healthy, but if Pujols gets gimpy, he’ll DH and Cron will play 1st base. At one point last year, The Sciosciapath benched Cron vs. righties. And he’s better vs. righties! Much of the brain’s complex advancements in evolution happened in the neocortex. The Sciosciapath benches his neocortex for what he sees with his eyes. “You can’t second guess what you see, otherwise you may as well wear tanning bed goggles and get led around by a seeing-eye dog that can read sabermetrics.” That’s Scioscia addressing the media. Anyway, what can we expect of C.J. Cron for 2015 fantasy baseball and why is he a sleeper?
He has power potential that shows in his 27 homers in High-A in 2012. Then in 2013 *covers mouth so you can’t hear* and, in 2014, he hit 18 homers between Triple-A and the majors (11 in MLB in 242 ABs). No idea what happened in 2013, perhaps he thought his first initials stood for Custom Juice and he got roped into this stupid custom juice craze. I miss the salad days of fro-yo. Now everywhere I go it’s kale juice this, beet juice that. What about orange juice’s feelings?! Are you people that unsympathetic?! Cron did all of this before celebrating his 25th birthday (unless he celebrates his Europe birthday by inversing his month and day. I have a good friend who used to do this because they were born outside the country and when they came here the DMV didn’t understand the concept of listing the day before the month. This came in handy when she was able to turn 21 six months before her actual birthday. I feel like there’s an SAT math problem in there figuring out what her birthday is and what the DMV thinks it is. Maybe I’ll just exit this parenthetical now.). Cron is capable of 25 homers. Your 2007 self is like, “Whatever, everyone hits 25 homers.” Well, your 2007 self sounds like it’s foggy in the head. Consult with your 2014 self because no one hits 25 homers anymore. The other nice thing about Cron is he doesn’t hit for a junky average (barring bad luck). He hit around .300 in the minors (though with no plate discipline, so beware in OBP leagues). .300 feels aggressive, but he could make .270 work for him by cutting his Ks a tad. If Cron hits, Scioscia will have to start him, right? (Though, I’d like to drop the comma and just say, “If Cron hits Scioscia…”) Scioscia benched Napoli for five years, so, well, no one knows if he’ll start, but let’s just assume he will. For 2015, I’ll give him the projections of 62/23/70/.262/2 with upside. Yup, he could be huge, potentially Cron-Magnon.
Doesn’t the trade for Joyce kill the chances of Cron getting to bat against righties?
It does
This post went up hours before that trade…
@Grey: If you had to choose between keeping CJ Cron and Alex Guerrero, who would you pick? I’m a fan of both of their upside, but discouraged by the recent trades involving Howie Kendrick and Jimmy Rollins heading to LAD, and Matt Joyce to LAA. On a happier note, at least Grant Green will have every chance to break out this year. Josh Rutledge couldn’t start on a last place team, so I’m not sure how he could start on a first place team. But back to Cron/Guerrero?
Cron
Flipping thru the channels and I turned on a Pauly Shore stand up tour doc….SAGNOF!
@J-FOH: aka “have it on blu-ray watching in a snuggie”
@Prez: too bad it’s not on Blu-Ray or DVD. Nice try…it’s on the DVR
@J-FOH: ahh, but you dont deny the snuggie i see…
@Prez: It’s a pink leopard print
if you were a peg boy, would you let me fill the back end of my roster with you?
@Prez: Prezii!
@J-FOH: im back in action!
@Prez: Prez!
@SteveNZ: ohhh yeaaa!
Prezii, I miss you!
I did the RCL update this week on the football side and got to use rosterbate in sentence. It’s like taking batting practice. I can smell the spring on the horizon
Nice!
@Grey: I’m trying to recruit football over here
Sweet
Jimmy Clausen week is the week you recruit. Well played…and by well played I mean well trolled.
@Sky: I have my allegiances or is that allergies? maybe its allegories?
A little off topic…but did we ever decide if Willie McGee looks like he was always smelling something dying, or if he looked like he was always getting pinched in the butthole?
He looks like a flat tire that is shaped into a face by a performance artist
@Grey: A face like a ruptured gumboot, as we say in these parts.
HA!
Padres just traded a bunch of prospects for Wil Myers. Risky but I like it!
@royce!: “Trade me to somewhere with better beer, goddammit!”
@SteveNZ: Could be wrong, but I bet nearly any mlb city would have better beer than Tampa Bay.
@royce!: I guess Myers just got lucky then.
(Though I hear the Stripper’s Tassel IPA is pretty good)
@SteveNZ: Extra skunky!
@royce!: And they still have Myers for cheap for five more years I believe…
@Wake Up: Yep, until 2020. Not surprisingly, the locals are already panning this trade, bitching about having lost “our SS of the future.”
Yeah, nice move by the Padres…
Another time…you can’t force this greatness…plus, at present, I’m practicing my Juan Eichelberger delivery…
I’m currently shaping Manny Sanguillen’s sideburns, so we both have our hands filled…
@Grey: Ah yes, if I remember correctly, both he and Bartolo hail from the same Colon…
Haha
Just finished watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with my kids…I had forgotten what a good movie it was…I also remembered as they were flying over Neuschwanstein Castle that these weren’t even my kids…I don’t even have any…who the eff were these kids that think they can just come in and watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with me anytime they want!
PS Idea for anyone that can execute…Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Bus…Dick drives around LA looking for random girls in Victorian-era gowns to bang bang in the back seat of Chitty Chitty…
Need to check my library to verify, but I believe there already was a Titty Titty Bang Bang Bus….
@Grey: You gotta be kidding me!
Back to the drawing board for you!
hey grey and all that will help,
can keep 6 (rounds they are kept in are in parenthesis – if you keep a guy with same rounds, then 1 guy will move down a round – i.e. miggy/stanton both at one…youd keep 1 @ round 1, then 1 @ round 2)
Miggy (1), Stanton (1), Goldy (1), Donaldson (24), Brantley (18), altuve (8), machado (21), Gregpolanco (27)
thanks!
Not Machado and Polanco
Do you suppose CJ enjoys hearing the lamentations of the Mariners’ women as much as his counterpart, Conan’s god, does?
@Clint: HA, I posted that clip after he got called up. Nice call
@J-FOH:
You are correct, sir, and touche’.
I don’t follow
How would you rank Cashner, Stroman, and Gausman over the next 2-3 years in a keeper? I can keep one for sure and maybe two.
Stroman, Cashner
Based on the Ads at the bottom of your write up i think i’m planning a solo trip to Russia in the near future
@JeF With 1 F: Looks like the Russia ad is gone, man looks like nothing but a good time there
Make sure to try the borscht, it’s great this time of year!
@Grey: Its on my list..right below the Vag
Ha, nice
I honestly think Sciosa reads Razzball and made this move to spite you.
I read somewhere that the Matt Kemp trade reminds them of the Vernon Wells trade. A nice comp I think.
If grandal goes all “Rangers Mike Napoli” and some of the other guys work out it’ll look good for the Dodgers. Also freeing up joc Peterson to play center is a nice byproduct of that deal.
Yup, he totally reads Razzball… And comments under the name JFOH…
@Grey: Ha
@Grey: thats kinda messed up
Haha
@Grey: Although its kinda true, being that we are both on the husky side and not that bright, its still not cool. You don’t hear me comparing you to a jockey or Billy Barty
HA! I’m the Billy Barty of fantasy, snitches!
driving home listening to a rollerskating jam named Saturday
Nice!
@Grey: some serious scratching on that track
Okay, this is weird, but I was just scratching my arm when I got your comment.
@Grey: and I was scratching my ass…this is crazy
Wow, me too, but I was using my arm!
@Grey: no lie I have this plastic spoon I feed my 6 month old with and as I was shoveling in some sweet potatoes, the spoon makes a scratching noise just like a vinyl record when it rubs on his gums and I had just taped a video of me spinning crazy hot shit in his mouth
@nick the dick: my wife just scratched my Sausage with her teeth…WTF!!
Ha!
@Grey: you can catch it on my new album ‘Gum Scratchin with DJ Nasty Nate’
HA!
@Jef with 1 f: ugh if only wives had toothless mouths too….
@nick the dick: Ha ha
@nick the dick: when your’re in your 70’s
@J-FOH: The anticipation is killing me
@nick the dick: I know a guy who was with this girl who lost a lot of her teeth in a car accident. I hear its wonderful
Ha! It’s how Big Baby Jesus got his start!
@Jef with 1 f: Let’s all get baked like Anita…
@Wake Up: Ha…I’m in
Trade sonny gray for altuve in a points lg?
Yup
What do you think of Rougned Odor’s potential over the next 3-5 years? Top 10 2B? Top 5?
Top 5 in a few years…
@Grey: he stinks…
@Wake Up: LOL HA!
@J-FOH: Whatsup brotha from another baby momma?
@Wake Up: talking with Magoo on the phone, working on my anti-tan, chillin with Guerillmo Mota, and how is the one man band?
Haha
Nice timing. Joyce just killed his upside. You had me into Cron till i saw that.
Yeah, oh well…
When I see Cron, I think Cron rhymes with John. Does Cron rhyme with zone for you guys?
I believe it rhymes with zone, but John doesn’t…
@Grey: Ha. The way *I* think a baseball name is pronounced often turns out to be quite different from what it actually is – when I hear it on TV or from you guys on the podcast…
I wouldn’t trust the way I say any name…
The most confusing for me is Melancon… Looks like a hard C in there, it’s not…
@Grey: Snap on Melancon. I always thought the ‘z’ in Scherzer was hard too – probably would be in German pronunciation…
Yeah, that’s definitely just an Americanization of Scherzer…
@Grey: it’s how i say it, melon CON.
@goodfold2: if schoop wanted his name said “scope” he could call himself scope. schoop looks like schoop to me.
Yeah, me too, but it’s not how he does I don’t think…
Hey Grey,
Keeper question in ten team mixed keeper (OBP) with minor keepers.
Stanton for $17 (can only keep one year and then have to trade him)
versus
2 years of Yelich at 7
3 years of Soler at 7
2nd overall pick in minor draft where I can get a useful piece for 2015.
Concerns: Stanton was hit in the face quite violently. if he is not the same and has a bad year his trade value will be down next year and I wont get back a good return and he would kill my 2015. I own Yelich/Soler right now.
@Whatever: Id keep stanton…theres no guarantees with Soler or Yelich.
Stanton
Matt Joyce to the Angels, Cron’s platoon partner in waiting?
Wow, did I jinx that?
@Grey: The power of Grey…
@MattTruss223: Ha Ha what timing
Seriously… Jeez…
12 team dynasty. Offered Hosmer and Henry Owens for Betances and a mid level pick. Already have Kimberly and Chapman but no 1b. Thoughts?
@nuke: Kimbrel*
Take Hosmer
Cron’s projected to hit 7th and be the regular DH as of this moment, but it’s tough to count on any young, relatively unproven player who plays for the Sciosciapath. He’ll probably have to prove his worth after a tough 2nd half too (.589 OPS, 29.9 % K%). Could see him hitting 5th in an everyday role by early May just as easily as winding up in a platoon with someone like Marc Krauss. Worth a flier though for his power upside as you mentioned.
I’m finally starting to catch up on this season of Top Chef. I’m about four episodes in now, I think. Just finished watching the episode with Norm from Cheers. Is Aaron able to get along with anyone before he gets (inevitably) axed? That guy seems to picking fights with everybody.
@Big Magoo: he hit well til sp started to mess with him.
@J-FOH: It shouldn’t take more than an early season hot streak to cement his role (Hamilton, Freese, and Aybar are scheduled to hit 4th-6th – yikes), but you never know with Scioscia…
Yup, agreed on Cron… Top Chef’s actually good this year after taking a few season hiatus from entertaining… I won’t say anything on Aaron but you’re still at the point where it’s obvious who’s going home…
@Grey: Yup, there’s still some fat to trim. Gregory is pretty much the only chef who looks destined for the finale (at this early point). Aaron, the blond girl, Katsuji, and a couple of others look a little iffy…
Mae does too at the point you’re at…
@Grey: Is that the Asian with the weird hairdo? I haven’t seen enough of her to form any kind of decent opinion yet…
Nah, the normal looking Asian girl, she’s been in the top all through the beginning… You’ve seen her… She works for Voltaggio…
@Grey: Ah yeah, she’s been doing well. Nothing terribly impressive thus far, at least to me. She’s been cruising through though. Who’s that bearded dude with the tats? He seems pretty good too…
Kevin with the pig tattoo? He’s from two seasons ago… Maybe you mean Adam… He is doing well…
@Grey: No, not Kevin. Yeah, it must be Adam. Tall, skinny guy with tattoos and a beard. I’m terrible with names, obviously…
Yup, that’s Adam… Brooklyn hipster guy… He is doing well…
@Grey: How bout last episode where that person killed it again and that person got eliminated and that other thing happened!
Ha, are you protecting Magoo’s untainted ears?
@Grey: @nick the dick: Hey, no spoilers!
Ha… Will catch up already!
@Grey: Exactly, I don’t wanna play spoiler….you know what I mean. That thing DID happen and yes that person DID kill it
Yeah, that was surprising… And awesome!
@Big Magoo: just dont sleep on my boy Dougie. Grey has the wool pulled over his eyes.
@nick the dick: The short guy with the beard, right? Yeah, he seems pretty solid…
What kind of OBP to you expect….oh wait, you acknowledged his OBP!
I’ll call that progress.
After keeping Abreu, Bautista, and CarGo(mez), pick two others:
Cano ($24)
Rizzo ($23)
Altuve ($21)
C-Dick ($4)
OBP league, as you know.
Dickerson, Altuve
@Grey: I was thinking the same thing but it would be nice to have Abreu and Rizzo again.
I’m guessing Rizzo will go for $30+ in my draft.
Is that about the max you’d bid for him?
I don’t go over $30 for anyone
@SwaggerJackers: Gotta keep Dickerson at that price. I’d keep Rizzo as well and try to reacquire either Cano or Altuve in the auction. Could then grab a cheaper MI option like Kipnis, Zobrist, or Kendrick if available.
@SwaggerJackers: Id keep Abreu, Cargomez, Rizzo Altuve and C-Dick out of that group
Wow now THAT Wong post IS a sleeper post. I love him too, think he could actually provide even more power than advertised, just a lower avg. That bat is a pocket rocket, crazy how he hits the ball so hard at his size. Those projections would be awesome at 2B.
In one league I dont have him he costs $6, thinking about making an offer for him. He’d cost $12 to sign for 2 years or $14 for 3 years, that too much for an unproven rook?
I’d keep him for only one year, very few people I’d keep longer…
@Grey: 1 year is +$3 , 2 years is +6 , 3 years is +8 (from base cost of $6). All depends on the value, just wondering if he’s a bit expensive to be worth trade targeting.
Don’t think he’s worth being saddled with for multiple years in case something goes wrong
@Grey: Yeah kinda my thinking too.
The AL Central has been rabid in acquiring guys lately.
Melky, Rios, Shark, Santana, Morales, Robertson, Laroche.
It’ll be interesting to see how it all shakes out in 2015.
Yeah, most pieces no one else wanted…
Hey Grey, I’m in a 6×6 OBP 14 team roto league. Our salary is $300 ($260 at auction). 23 man lineup with 6 bench spots. We can keep 6 guys (add $5 to their past years salary) and 4 MLers (no salary increase) as keepers each year. I’ve got these 6 slated to be my guys…
Rizzo $25
Puig $11
Springer $6
Altuve $16
Melancon $9
Robertson $11 and MLer is Rusney for $4 (cost me a bit to get it him with all the hype).
I am being offered Sale $16, Soler $1 (MLer) and Giolito $1 for Puig, Melancon and Fister (who I am not keeping but this guy wants at $13). I also have Yelich @ $11 and Adam Jones @ $25 and could keep one of these guys if I did that trade because Soler would be a MLer keeper so I’d stay at my 6 limit. thoughts?
Hold
I’m just sad Colon and Cron aren’t on the same team.
Come on Angels, trade for Fartolo!
Yeah, wah wah…
If Cron gets a decent fan base in L.A will he followers calls themselves “Cronies?”
In addition to nice power, another benefit will be the guys hitting in front of him.
Calhoun. Trout. Pujols. Hamilton.
Some nice Rbi opportunities there. If he hits a homer, it’ll likely be more than a solo shot more often than not.
I think I just became a Crony!
We’re all Cronies!
@Carnac: @gareth: Ha! to you both
Just wait, the Sciosciapath is going to give us Cron’s Disease.
Yes, possibly
Now that Morse has been signed please begin the “does Morse have 30 hone run power?” Questions and the “I’m punting 1B and going to take Morse because he can hit 30 home runs” statements
@J-FOH: You can expect a pro-rated 30 home runs from Morse in the times he is not injured. Which will be often.
@gareth: no shit.
@J-FOH: He is a 30-homer hitter…in April, then he gets hurt…
@Grey: good answer. Just a little off season batting practice . Now where is Cram?
Ha
@J-FOH: I’m punting HRs and taking Morse.
@Mr. Han’s Militant Vegans: it’s a strategy. Not a very good one but it works.
@J-FOH: That’s what they said about New Coke, the Edsel, Colgate Entrees, and Thirsty Cat!
BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!
My Style is unorthodox….
@Mr. Han’s Militant Vegans: you can platoon him with cron and singleton
OJ, the OG of juices
@nick the dick: I saw you…and him…walking in the rain… BTW, there’s a Nas documentary on Showtime…I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m gonna… It’s all about the making of his first album…
@Grey: it is pretty good watched it last night.
Oh, nice… Yeah, I almost did last night, but was a little late… Tonight’s oice finale, tomorrow Survivor… I’m watching it on Thursday!
@Grey: Worth watching enjoy
Thanks, Birdmann!
@Grey: Watching it right now… this is really good… even better than the Quest documentary.
Oh, yeah? All right cool, I’m gonna watch on Thursday…
@Grey: HA….word that’s cool, I wish I had Showtime
Gotta be a way to download it… I’d think…
From Yesterday-
Keeper/Trade help!
Head to head league, keep 6, 12th rnd is the best you can keep someone at. Have two options right now, toss back a guy or take a trade offer sitting out there:
My guys are:
FHer-4th
Hanley-6th
Altuve-7th
Seager-8th
Gomez-12th
Trout-12th
Teheran-12th
Guy is willing to take Seager in the 8th (instead of Hanley) and Teheran 12th for Sale 12th
Or stay pat and throw back Seager or Teheran
No brainer, right?
Input is much appreciated!
@Mcgaffer: How does your draft work when you have more than one keeper in a round? Does your commish take the picks off the backend when setting your keepers?
@Birdmann: example if you kept Gomez, Trout and Teheran are they all in the same round or are they spread over rounds 12, 13 and 14. I am a commish in a Yahoo league and trying to setup my keepers with round value attached.
@Birdmann: In my league if someone were to keep three players kept in the same round i take one off the front and one off the back end…if its two players from the same round i just take one off the front end…really either way works as long as everyone is clear on the rules.
@JeF With 1 F: I know how to give multi picks per round, but you still need to have rounds that the team doesn’t pick in. Do you just take them off at the end of the draft or do you make it so they don’t pick in the rounds that follow the multi player round?
@Birdmann: prior to the draft you set the keeper players to a specific round manually, Its under either custom keeper settings or custom draft order…not sure which one off the top of my head
@Mcgaffer: I’d take Sale
Guys move up a spot, so if you have two 12’s one moves to 11.
Took the deal, thanks for the advice.
Now the owner of donaldson in the 12th has just offered him for my newly aquired Sale….tough call here, need your advice again!!
I’d take Donaldson
Soup or Crackers?
@J-FOH: Soup please! Do catchers and pitcher report soon?
@Birdmann: you are the soup or crackers
@J-FOH: You opening up a franchise?
@Grey: I wish. No just commenting on the white guy name.
Ah…
@Grey: that whole scene with Kevin hart and the name . Quality stuff. For some reason the soup or crackers popped in my head…*lights second spliff *
Only time I’ve found Kevin Hart funny
@Grey: very true here too.
Grey-
would you trade Freeman and Arenado for Miggy in a keper?
I’m possibly not keepng Freeman. My other keeper options would be Stanton, Puig, J-Upton, Sale (and then either one of Arenado or freeman, or trade both for Miggy)
@Jason: Sounds decent
His name sounds like an investment firm… “You can’t go wron with CJ Cron.”
@Mr. Han’s Militant Vegans: Ha
Kennys or Cron…I like two Kennys over one Cron
@JeF With 1 F: So do I, but there’s room for both
@Grey: Amen
I’m being offered Carlos Gomez and Sonny Gray for Corey Kluber and Starlin Castro. Do I fire?
12 team 6×6 9 player keeper positional OF league. All players mention are keepable to me.
@NotRaulCastro: I’d want the Gomez side
In a 12 team league with 6 keepers. So far have these players – Have a trade offer Donaldson for Sale? Would take it?
Rizzo
Dozier
Donaldson
Tanaka
Harvey
Castro
Thanks.
@bdub: Yup
You sold me on the power upside. I’m officially a Cronut! Cronnut? CroNut?
@Beastman: Cronut, yum!
