FantasyDraft: Rough Trade

True confession: I can’t cope with trade deadline season. I find it a terrifying time to be 1) a baseball fan (of a team that is in sell mode [cough Blue Jays cough]) and 2) a baseball writer: 1) Because favorite players can be suddenly whisked off to dreaded rivals (I’m looking at you, brand-new-Yankee JA Happ) and 2) because things turn on a dime. For example, when I first started putting this post together, I was all “start Astro X against Cole Hamels!” Now…nope. So when you’re assembling your lineup for FantasyDraft today, I’ll give you the same caveat I give for weather: double-check your lineups before they lock. Anyway! Let’s talk about things that are hopefully more predictable: it’s a Coors day, so hitters gonna hit! (Right? Dear God, please give me something to hold on to in this crazy world.) Of course you’ll pay up for Rockies (Nolan Arenado, $10,400; Charlie Blackmon, $9,900; Trevor Story, $10,300) and A’s bats (Khris Davis, $11,100; Marcus Semien, $9,300), but it may be worth it. Also, Atlanta, second best in the league versus LHP, are seeing lefty Alex Wood today. Pitching options are tougher, but let’s see what we can do with them, after the jump.

(Because  I don’t know about you, but I feel like I died during the All-Star Break and was miraculously revived with the return of MLB games, yesterday.) Clayton Kershaw ($23,300) is your Captain Obvious play on FantasyDraft today. You could roll with that. You could stack your Cleveland hitters versus Bartolo Colon. Or, you know, you could get a little sneakier, go a little cheaper, try to outwit your opponents, and there are enough interesting options on the slate today to pull it off. FantasyDraft: Cents And Sensibility

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a betting girl (or boy) in want of a good fortune must take into her (his) possession Colorado and Cleveland bats today. For on this fine Saturday, the respectively 4th– and 5th-best teams versus LHP both happen to be facing the aforementioned lefty pitching — and the Rockies are doing it at home, to boot. Here’s the tricky thing. FantasyDraft has split its slate into two today. We want to pay up for pitching for the early slate, and late, for the main slate, we’re going to stack hitters (Rockies, Indians and Mariners) like our futures depend upon it, while we let pitching slide a tad. Luckily, there’s enough variation in decent pitching to pull all this off. Let’s take a look at some options, shall we?

FanDuel: Clean Up On Aisle 4

Some days on DFS, it’s like standing sadly in the grocery store at 7 a.m. the morning after a long weekend (happy upcoming Canada Day, by the way, fellow Canadians!); i.e., the shelves are BARE. Other days, it’s as if you’ve been let loose in Whole Foods with a $500 gift card and everything’s on sale. [Sidebar: I may or may not be hungry at time of writing.] This is one of those latter days, people. One of those delirious days where the pitchers are good, many of the parks are pitcher-friendly, and there are bargains a-plenty to be had for your slate on FanDuel. I’m putting Jacob DeGrom at the top of my list today, but really I could just do the eenie-meanie-miny-mo thing over Streamonator’s top 10 and be reasonably happy about whomever I landed upon. Of course not all of them are cheap (that would be too much to ask), but let’s take a look at some options for hitters alongside all that sumptuous pitching.

FantasyDraft: Wallace And deGromit—A Grand Day Out

I’m not quite sure who will be the Wallace in this scenario, but I’m hoping Jacob deGrom is the one who brings the easy cheese (oh, just go watch the movie). He’s the highest-rated pitcher on Streamonator today. It’s that pretty, pretty 1.52 ERA on the year and 1.45 ERA at home in Citi Field. He’s not cheap on FantasyDraft—$22,000—but marginally cheaper than the other boy with a J name, Justin Verlander ($23,300; top-rated pitcher on FantasyDraft for the main slate, and Streamonator slots him in second, but Justin’s match-up versus Boston makes me a tiny bit nervous. Let’s call it woman’s intuition, or let’s just blame that if I turn out to be wrong). Let’s look at some other options for your DFS slate today.

Draft: Miles To Go Before I Sleep

…Unless Miles Mikolas is quick to put the Royals to bed. I’m optimistic he just might. (Actually, it’s Victoria Day here in Canada, the day everyone must do my bidding, so he’s obliged to.) As of Monday morning, the Royals are last in MLB. Mikolas hasn’t earned more than 2 runs in a game since early April, and other than his last start, when he was yanked after 85 pitches, he tends to go nice and deep into games. He’s got my vote for pitcher on Draft today. [Sidebar: Also for 70s throwback/Paul Rudd’s gloriously mustached father.] But in case all your competitors decide to try drafting him as well, let’s look at some other pitching options, after the jump. Spoiler: there’s not a lot of depth, so I’d look to draft your pitcher early today.

FantasyDraft: Paxton Vobiscum

I used to be a Catholic schoolgirl. I was bad at it (ahem), but some things stay with one, lo these many years later. The urge to dip my fingers in holy water and genuflect (why does that word sound so dirty somehow?) whenever I walk into a church. The impulse to reply “and also with you” when someone says “May the fourth be with you”. An enjoyment of wafers and religious experiences, such as watching James Paxton ($24,100 on FantasyDraft today) deal a no-hitter against the Blue Jays last week. He’s taking on Detroit today: yes, his last start, which was also against the Tigers, saw him give up 3 earned, but I’m going to put it down to the food poisoning he was allegedly dealing with (gotta go easy on the loaves and fishes) and exhort you: Pay up and start him and may (a) piece (of the action) be with you.

Draft: Add A Dash Of Carrasco Sauce

There’s some pretty good pitcher depth for your Draft team today, even if you’re in a 6- to 10-person draft. You can afford to wait a little to draft a pitcher, but if you’d prefer to take a pitcher early for the middle slate tonight, nab Carlos Carrasco. In previous match-ups, he’s held the active Detroit Tigers to a team OPS of .561 against him, with the biggest possible threat against him being Jose Iglesias: Joey Church has gone 9 for 28 versus Carrasco (OPS of .906), and after that the Tigers fall off a cliff. The weather is a little bit of a worry in Detroit, though, so keep an eye on that.

FantasyDraft: Sinker De Mayo

I so wanted to be able to highlight a Mexican pitcher today, as it’s the day after Cinco de Cuatro [Sidebar: You heard about the remix, right?] Alas, the closest I could get is this jug of margaritas and Aaron Sanchez at Tampa Bay and…no. It’s one of those days I wish I didn’t have to draft a pitcher at all for my FantasyDraft lineup, actually. The selection is all iffy pitchers and/or bad ballparks (Charlie Morton is pitching! … in Arizona. Kenta Maeda is pitching against the Padres! … in Coors South [more on that below]). I’ll be going with Charlie Morton anyway and stacking some hitters — thoughts on which ones after the jump. It may be a wild, white-knuckled ride, like the first time you drink tequila slammers with your mother-in-law.

FantasyDraft: O(rino).co Flow—Sale Away

I’m somewhere where I don’t know where I am. I began this week in sunshine in Iceland and came back to an ice storm that had me grounded for hours in Toronto (and it’s late April, may I remind you). Facebook (dafuq?) was showing live MLB games. Jose Bautista is a minor leaguer. Everything feels turned on its head. I don’t trust much anymore, but for my FantasyDraft lineup today, I do feel I can trust Chris Sale ($23,400… Yes. I know) as he squares up against the Oakland A’s in O.co Stadium. Sale has pitched there only a couple of times, but he’s fared pretty well, with a 3.21 ERA. There’s a good chance he could hit double-digit strikeouts against the A’s, who are striking out at a 23% clip. So in summary, Sale today should be A’s-O-Ks.

Let’s take a look at other options for FantasyDraft for April 21, the first day of spring. (“No, autumn!” cries everyone in the southern hemisphere.)

FantasyDraft: Cole Mining Won’t Get You Shafted

I’ve held a myriad of weird jobs over the years, none of which I’ve been qualified for: Closed captioner for every episode of The Monkees shown here in Canada (seriously)? Check. Audio engineer in a TV mobile truck for hockey games? Check. Report writer at a geology firm? Check. Writer at Razzball? Check. I have always kind of winged it (wung it?) through life. And that’s the theme for this post: winging it. As I write this on Friday night, the Dodgers-Giants game has just been postponed and God knows who’s going to be playing where tomorrow. Also, I’ll be on a plane (winging it!) so I won’t be able to check for you. So forgive me in advance if everything I say below is irrelevant by the time the first Saturday game starts (and as always, check your lineups, kids). But going with the information we have at present, I’m going to suggest you throw Gerrit Cole into your FantasyDraft team for Saturday. Ya, he has frustrated us all in the past, but he is taking the mound versus the third-worst-in-MLB San Diego Padres. (Aside: You know, someday I’d just like to give the Padres a comforting group hug.) He had an outstanding start last time versus the Rangers, going 7 innings of 2-hit ball, and I think he’s worth the $24,000 today (and yes, that does make him the priciest pitcher on the main slate) — he’s probably going to get you a win. But if you don’t dig him (BECAUSE COAL, GEDDIT… OK, I’ll stope), I’ve excavated some more options for you after the jump.
