Draft: Sup Pham

Even though he may not have reached his preseason expectations, Tommy Pham has put together a strong season and could still finish as a top 30 outfielder. His power-speed combo out of the Rays’ cleanup spot makes him an attractive target today in Texas. Globe Life Park is one of the best hitting environments in the league, especially during the day. Facing off against Yohander Mendez makes this an even better matchup for Pham, because:

A) Mendez sucks

B) Pham hits lefties better than righties, and

C) he’s projected for 0.0 points on Draft.

That’s right, as at time of writing, Draft has placed a 0 point projection on Pham (I’m assuming accidentally), so you should be able to grab him with one of your last picks.

Draft: Nola Day

Aaron Nola is on an insane tear right now, with 47 strikeouts in his last 34 2/3 innings and a 2.34 ERA. While the Nationals are a tough lineup to face, it doesn’t look like Nola should have many problems, as he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. Nola has a 2.29 ERA with a 2.52 Deserved Run Average, and even with the weak Phillies lineup, they’re favored -130 to beat Strasburg. Remember, on Wednesdays we start Nola!

Draft: Don’t Rain On Kopech’s Parade

White Sox starter Michael Kopech will be making his fourth major league start tonight against the Tigers. He’s only got 11 innings in three starts this year because of two rain delays, and it looks like there’s more rain on the way in Chicago tonight. However, it looks like Kopech may have finally dodged the rain, as there’s a window for game time with a 43% chance of thunderstorm. Assuming his start isn’t rained out, Kopech has an outstanding matchup against the Tigers, who have the second-lowest wOBA versus righties at .291. He’s got a ton of upside that you don’t want to miss out on.

Draft: Macho Manny

I have no idea why, but Manny Machado is only projected for 0.5 points tonight on Draft. I’m guessing it has something to do with them being in an AL park throwing off his playing time expectation, even though he’ll obviously be in the lineup batting third for the Dodgers. It’s incredible that Machado of all players was gifted with this low projection, as he’s already one of the best hitters on the board playing in Texas, an extreme hitter’s park, against a weak pitcher in Mike Minor. If you’re lucky, other owners may forget about Machado entirely, and you can snag him at the end of your draft.

Draft: Buehler’s Day

Walker Buehler has been shredding opposing lineups over the last month, posting a 2.70 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 30 innings. He’s got a 3.34 SIERA and a 3.40 Deserved Run Average on the season with a 26.5% K-rate, proving to be a worthwhile starter in his rookie season. After taking down some tough matchups in the Mariners, Rockies (at Coors), and Astros, he shouldn’t have a problem with the Cardinals tonight.

Draft: A Giant Monster

Hyun-Jin Ryu, known as “the monster,” will be making his first start back from the disabled list tonight against the Giants. He’s projected for just 9.5 points on Draft, making him an outstanding value play for what should be a stellar outing. The Giants have just a .300 wOBA versus lefties this year and play in one of the most pitcher-friendly environments in baseball. While he hasn’t pitched since May, Ryu tore it up through his first six starts, posting a 31.3% K-rate with a 3.16 FIP. There’s always some risk in starting a pitcher coming off of the DL, but the upside strongly outweighs the cost for Ryu.

Draft: Call Her Quintana

If Travis Scott were playing Draft, he would say, “straight from Mexico, call her Quintana!” Jose Quintana was able to get himself back on track in his last start, throwing six innings with six strikeouts, no walks, and just one earned run. Granted, it was against the Padres, but he gets another easy matchup against the Royals tonight. Kansas City has a pitiful .293 wOBA versus lefties this year, which is even worse than the Padres mark. He should also have no problem getting a win against Heath Fillmyer. You can get an awesome start out of Quintana and still land him late in your draft.

Draft: Fifty K’s of Gray

While Sonny Gray has had an awful season thus far, he was much better in the month of June and is coming off of three straight strong starts. There’s certainly some risk in starting him at home, but Gray is facing one of the weakest lineups in baseball in the Orioles, who have just a .300 wOBA versus righties. Their 24.3% K-rate means that Gray has lots of strikeout upside, and he should have plenty of run support against Alex Cobb.

Draft: The Price to Pay

The Orioles have been one of the best lineups to stream against all year, and now that they’ve traded Manny Machado, they’re just making it too easy. Baltimore has just a .290 wOBA versus lefties this year, so I’ll be rolling with David Price against them on Wednesday. Price hasn’t been spectacular this year, but he’s coming off of a nice return from the break where he went 6 1/3 scoreless against the Tigers. Price has a viable 24.0% K-rate and should have no problem giving you a productive start on Draft.

Draft: Kenta, Do You Love Me?

“Kenta, do you love me? ‘Cause I want ya, and I need ya.” Kenta Maeda will be doing his own In My Feelings challenge as he takes on the Padres in what could be the most valuable start of the night on Draft. Maeda has incredible numbers this year, with a 28.7% K-rate and a 2.89 FIP, which makes it really surprising to see guys like Freddy Peralta and Luke Weaver projected for more points. Furthermore, Maeda has the best matchup that any righty could ask for at San Diego – their .287 wOBA versus righties is dead last in all of baseball, and their 25.9% is second-highest. As Drake would say, I’m down for ya always.

Draft: Cole Brings the Fireworks

Gerrit Cole and his insane K-rate will be bringing the fireworks against the Rangers on today’s July 4th matchup. Cole always has high strikeout upside, but he’s got even more against a Rangers lineup that strikes out 25.3% of the time against righties, the fourth highest mark in the league. Cole should have no problem outperforming his Draft projection today. I’m looking to snag him in my drafts.

Draft: Biebs in the Trap

If you’re looking for a late round pitcher to snag on Draft, turn to Indians starter Shane Bieber. He’s torn up opposing batters in his three starts this year, as he’s got 22 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings with only five earned runs allowed. His only matchups this year, the Twins and Tigers, aren’t particularly tough, but neither are the Cardinals – their .313 wOBA versus righties ranks them 15th in the majors. Leave it to Bieber!
