FanDuel: Clobber With Clevinger & Value

Usually readers know my Saturday posts are all about value on the mound.  Sometimes it’s just not there.  Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and recommend the most expensive pitcher on the board, Mike Clevinger ($11,200).  There are just too many positives: He’s at home, where he’s gone 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA.  The Royals only hit .238 with a .594 OPS against him.  If that’s not enough, the wind is howling in at Progressive Field in Cleveland.  But if you think you won’t find value here you’re wrong.  Using the powerful tool of ISO over the past two weeks, along with the usual Razzball insight, we present Saturday’s all value team after a quick word from our sponsor.

Fanduel: MAR-CO (gonzales) MAR-CO (gonzales)

On a day when there’s Clayton Kershaw and a lot of two’s priced as Aces, hunting for value is our favorite past-time. Enter Marco Gonzales ($7,700).  You may remember him from such hits as a 3-0 April with a 2.14 ERA.  Since then he’s hit a rough patch, but he did go 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA in July, including 6.0 innings with no walks, one earned run, and eight K’s against a Detroit team that still had Nick Castellanos on July 27th.  He went 6+ innings against the Rays his last time out, with nine K’s and two earnies, but he left after being hit on the leg with a comebacker.  He should be good to go today, but just in case you could more than throw a dart at Kyle Gibson against the sneakily struggling Brewers offense for a similar value play.  Now on to the picks.

FanDuel: House(r) the Competition

On a day with Aces such as Morton, Syndergaard, Corbin and Soroka on today’s FanDuel slate it can be tempting to go with them and cobble together around one high priced bat or two.  Patrick Corbin and Noah Syndergaard are facing each other, which makes choosing the winner, and thus the FanDuel bonus, too close to call.  Michael Soroka has faced the Marlins a couple times and beat them soundly, but the Marlins bats have woken up a little, and you know the saying: Third time’s the charm.  And Charlie Morton is the priciest, meaning you can grab him, but you won’t be able to afford the bats you need to compete.  That leads us to dark horse Adrian Houser ($5,700).  If you look closely you find a 3.38 ERA at home.  You also find that he’s holding right hand batters to a .224 batting average/.614 OPS slash line.  Houser struggles with lefties, but all of the Rangers left handed batters are struggling right now, especially on the road.  Now on to the picks.

FanDuel: Barria Town

On a slow day in the Majors it’s hard to find good value on FanDuel.  One such place is the seventh ranked pitcher Jaime Barria ($7,200).  He’s one spot above that on the Streamonator, but he’s also pitching against the 30th ranked Detroit Tigers offense at home at Angels Stadium in Anaheim.  Barria loves home cooking.  He’s 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA there this year.  He has a high probability of more innings and strikeouts than many others today, which equals FanDuel points.  Now on to the picks.

FanDuel: The Mets Still Have Matz

Rumors are swirling that the Mets are looking to trade Thor himself, and sign Zach Wheeler to a long term deal instead.  Another 2009 draft pick, however, may have something to do with that as well.  Steven Matz had fallen out of favor the first couple months of the season.  But he’s turned it around in July, particularly since he’s been back in the starting rotation.  He has a 3.27 ERA this month, and a 2.54 ERA at home, where he pitches today against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Pirates hit a measly .211, with a .566 OPS, against Matz over 38 at bats.  If that weren’t good enough, he’s a minuscule $6,400 on FanDuel.  And those savings can be put to good use.

FanDuel: Cron, C.J. Cron.

Sometimes the FanDuel slate is a packed casino of similar players seemingly priced too high to make a difference in your lineup.  Then one of them saunters up to the craps table in a white Tuxedo, stands out, and says “I’m Cron, C.J. Cron.”  He is at the absurdly low price of $3,300 today, probably because he has just been reinstated from the IL by the Minnesota Twins.  It’s absurdly low because he’s the 19th ranked first baseman today in price on FanDuel, and the 5th place hitter for the Twins, one of the best offenses in the league.  Today he faces the lowly lefty Jason Vargas.  Cron happens to destroy lefties to a .358 average this year, along with a 1.084 OPS and 182 OPS+.  Now on to the rest of the picks.

FanDuel: The Legend Of Brendan McKay

Sometimes a comet comes streaking across the MLB sky.  Today is one of those days on FanDuel, when a highly talented guy gets called up and makes his first start and starts out ridiculously cheap.  Lefty Brendan McKay ($5,700) is already a legend.  He held Judge and Stanton to 0-4 with three strikeouts when they were rehabbing in the minors earlier this year.  Furthermore, he’s held right handed batters to a .160 average and .462 OPS this year.  Lefties have hit a robust .185/.464.  He’s facing a Rangers squad that only hits .250 0n the road and .238 against left handed starters.  Some may stay away from him because he is a rookie, and because Justin Verlander is starting against the Mariners today.  But McKay’s value is just too good to pass up.  Plus, we need the salary cap space for some pricey batters today.

FanDuel: Ryu Time

Sometimes a FanDuel slate is straightforward.  There’s a Dodger pitcher, pitching at home, with a 1.26 ERA this year?  Sign me up!  Hyun-Jin Ryu ($10,600) is the man this year.  He’s 9-1 with a 1.26 ERA and .82 WHIP this year.  If the season ended today he would be the NL Cy Young award winner.  He has a 0.45 ERA in June and a 0.87 ERA at home.  He very well might throw a complete game shutout today.  Now on the rest of the picks.

FanDuel: Kershaw Is Killing It

Sometimes it’s better to stay away from a Dodgers Giants matchup.  One of the best rivalries in baseball can create uncertain outcomes at times.  Today is not one of those times.  The Dodgers are on an absolute tear.  They’re tied for the league lead with 48 wins.  And a big part of that is a resurgent Clayton Kershaw ($10,700).  Kershaw has a 2.78 ERA the last 30 days, a 2.25 ERA in June, and a 2.06 ERA against the Giants over the last three years.  That includes 90 Ks over 96 innings.  He’s also not walking many this year, with a 1.08 WHIP overall.  Kershaw is also $1,300 cheaper than today’s top dog Justin Verlander.  So use that dough for some of the no-brainer, big dollar guys in your lineup.  On to the rest of today’s picks.

FanDuel: Maximus is Glorious

The glory of Rome, even now, is a wonder to behold.  The Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the fountains, the beauty of the Renaissance everywhere you look.  But for pure 800 pound gorilla dominance, nothing tops the Colosseum.  And today Max Scherzer ($11,700) is the “Colosseo” of the FanDuel slate.  You may say he has a 3-5 record with a 3.06 ERA, how is that mighty?  Well my friends, he leads the league with 12.3 K/9, and the revamped Padres, even with Manny Machado, hit him to a minimus .188/.563 batting average/OPS slash line.  They also strike out 37% of the time against him.  Maximus dominante daverro!  Don’t judge him on my bad Italian, just start him. On to the picks.

FanDuel: The deGrominator

Jacob deGrom.  That almost says it all.  Sure, he’s 2-4 with a 3.60 ERA this year on the whole.  But in the month of May he is back to his dazzling self: 1.24 ERA, 13 Ks, 3 BB in 14 innings.  And if that wasn’t enough, he’s toeing the rubber against the 30th ranked run scoring team in the majors.  Not only are the Florida Marlins the 30th ranked offense, they’re a full 20 runs behind the 29th ranked Detroit Tigers.  That’s worse than the lazy plot devices going on in Game of Thrones!  The Marlins are so bad, and deGrom is so good, the Mets are favored at -410.  A whole season goes by and you don’t see a line like that.  He’s expensive ($11,300), but there is no surer thing on FanDuel this year than deGrom against the Marlins.  Of course, there’s more than one way to skin a FanDuel lineup, so on to the picks.
