Hitter Profiles: Breakouts 1.0

This week in our hitter profiles we are talking breakouts. So what is the difference between a breakout and what we have already covered in our sleeper posts (v1.0 here and v2.0 here)? Well, a breakout is like putting bacon on pizza. We already know that pizza is good, but that additional topping just made it one of the best. Whereas a sleeper is like realizing your nerdy classmate is now the CEO at a tech company. It makes so much sense now, but we missed the signs before it happened. Now that we have our painfully mandatory analogies out of the way, let us jump into a few of my favorite breakouts for the 2023 fantasy baseball season.

Hitter Profiles: Buying Used

There is something about buying used.  Whether it is that pleather couch or your 90’s hatchback, you cannot go wrong.  In our fantasy baseball world, this simply means passing up the young shiny objects and buying those old rusty veterans.  Sure, we sometimes are fighting Father Time, but at least we know our lineup can drive stick shift.  This week we dig into those draft day values that might sneak through the cracks and be waiting around for the savy owner.  Let us dig into this week’s 2023 fantasy baseball hitter profiles!

Hitter Profiles: Busts 1.0

The last few weeks our hitter profiles have focused on some deep sleepers to add to your late round draft board.  This week we are going to buck that trend and take a peak at some big names that come with an even bigger price tag.  Too often factors like youth, upside, discovery bias and more come together and deceive our draft capital.  Yes, this is the article where we say Lars Nootbar is going to bust, Michael Harris II is too expensive and Bobby Witt Jr. will see the sophomore slump.  Some may say this is blasphemy, but it might just be the perspective you need.

Welcome back to the first Hitter Profiles of the 2023 fantasy baseball season!  This offseason has included a lot of big contracts, changing landscapes and dreams of what next season will bring.  Here at Razzball, we have all passed our physicals thanks to a routine of finger curls and rigorous stretching.  Unfortunately, I did hear that Grey had to attend his physical a few times due to a paper cut from 2013.  With those formalities behind us, it is time to look ahead to what draft season will bring.  This week we kick off with a look at some of my favorite sleepers for the 2023 fantasy baseball season and what they could bring for pennies on the dollar at the draft table.  Welcome back folks and let us dig into the outfield class during our Sleepers 1.0.

Hitter Profiles – One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Keeper

The season is winding down and that gives us an opportunity to look at one of the most important times of the year for a keeper league owner.  As the playoffs and final standings push come to a close, those in contention will inevitably feel the roster crunch.  Casting off talent to make the all too critical move may win the league, but also be our ticket to a useful building block going into next year’s draft.  This week, we will focus on some of those casualties to see if there is any value to be found.  While these names might not be sexy, they just might be the right price for a keeper or dynasty piece.  Join us as we jump into the trash heap with our hitter profiles as we search for some 2023 keeper values.

Hitter Profiles: Shopping At Mendoza’s

The regular season is coming to a close and if you are reading this it means you are a true fantasy baseball owner that is deep in the playoffs or finishing the last rotisserie push!  None of that fantasy football goofiness, you want 162 games of pure glory.  Knowing your dedication, this week we dedicate our hitter profiles to your last push and a few hitters that may have been cast off due to poor early season performance.  In the spirit of Mario Mendoza and disappointing stat lines, we are shopping at the Mendoza bargain bins for players who have had rough seasons and seeing if there is any gold to be found for the late season push.

Hitter Profiles: Aged Rookies

Like fine wine, some Rookies are simply better with age.  Now I am not talking Rooke of the Year winners such as Jose Abreu or Ichiro Suzuki, who dominated upon their arrival to the MLB at a more advanced age.  Those guys had a leg up as stars in the native leagues prior to taking the MLB by storm.  No, we are talking about the guys like Jose Martinez, Shane Spencer or Ryan Shimpf who took the league by storm after, sometimes well after, their 25th birthday.  Sometimes they come out of nowhere as their MLB team can simply no longer deny their production or they find their way into a lineup due to injury or trade.  Either way, these guys can be jolts to our fantasy lineup as the season comes to a close.  This week, we dive into two different rookies to see if they are aging like a fine wine or more of a moldy cheese.

As we turn the calendar into the last full month of the season, there are still hopes alive for many fantasy managers. Whether that is due to strong ownership or the fact that you have switched over to the far inferior game of fantasy football, we are closing in on the finish line. September is for the true baseball manager who weathered the season to reach the playoffs or make the final rotisserie push. This week, we try to find a hot hand that might make a difference as we look at two outfielders that are making noise in the NL Central. This week’s hitter profiles are ready to begin!

Top 100 Hitters: Breaching Contract

This week our top 100 hitters get a shakeup not only from shifting roles and recent performance, but unfortunately, we see a few players tumbling down by their own accord.  Whether it was a bad haircut leading to a PED suspension or another off the field run in with the law, it is not the way we want to see a player dropping out of the rankings.  That said, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Marcell Ozuna do not seem to care about your fantasy team any more than their own team at this point, so our rankings had to return the favor.  Disappointing as it may be for teams relying on their fading stars at the end on the season, it is out with the old and in with the new in this week’s rendition of the top 100 hitters for the rest of the 2022 fantasy baseball season.

Hitter Profiles: Free Agent Buy Or Sell

Welcome to the scrap heap. Where all of the discarded and disregarded players have landed due to poor performance, injury or just simply disrespect. This week we are going to do a good ole Buy or Sell focusing on names that are owned in less than 50% of leagues. Maybe we strike it right or simply strike out. Whatever the outcome will be, at least we are in this together. Without further ado, let us jump in like a Carter Capps jump fastball.
