Kerry Is So Very… Injured
SPOILER ALERT! Kerry Wood is out for 6 to 8 weeks with a strained dorsi muscle. I thought only dolphins had dorsi muscles. Huh. Wait! Maybe Kerry Wood’s a dolphin. He does seem like he’d be good at Connect Four… underwater. Nah, couldn’t be. Though I could see him getting injured trying to remove a beer from a six pack holder. Hmm… maybe. Alas, for another day. Chris Perez is the pickup. If my money’s good at this rodeo, Kerry Wood’s not coming back until the All-Star Break and even then he’s no sure thing. Anyway, here’s some other fantasy baseball news:
Huston Street – Suffering from only shoulder inflammation. Could resume closer’s role by late-April. Put this in the file of, See Then Believe.
J.P. Howell – Out for 3 weeks with a sore shoulder. Can’t The Professor cook him up a cure with some coconuts and straw?
Dioner Navarro – Hurt his leg on a collision. Could mean more playing time for Kelly Shoppach. Those who like their ctachers late, take notice.
Cliff Lee – The Adverb might miss a start with an ab strain. Sounds like someone needs to leave Suzanne Somers’ workouts to the ladies.

Grey, after reading almost this entire site for the last two years (you helped me finish 2nd in 18 and 20 team leagues last year!), I drafted this team for this year:
It’s an 18 team roto league with OBP, SLG, R, HR, RBI, and Net SBs. Pitching stats are ERA, W, WHIP, K, SV, and HR allowed (hate this).
C Jeff Clement (C, DH) – He’ll get lots of ABs and has a good OBP
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Chase Utley – Took him 4th over Braun
3B Mark Reynolds (3B, 1B) – Had him last year, sticking with him
SS Asdrubal Cabrera (2B, SS)
2B/SS Adam Kennedy (2B, 3B) – Ugh
1B/3B David Freese
OF Nelson Cruz – Love my power-speed guys
OF Brad Hawpe – I know you don’t like him, but it happens
OF Nick Swisher (1B, OF) – Good late pick for an OBP league
OF Chris Young – Ugh. Bad pick in OBP league
OF Chris Dickerson – Might platoon. 5 OF slots sucks.
UTIL Willie Harris – OBP won’t kill me but another bad late pick.
PITCHERS
P Ricky Nolasco – My first pitcher and he’s a Grey All-Star
P Matt Garza – Kershaw almost fell to me but settled for Garza
P Jorge De La Rosa – J. Sanchez almost fell so I settled here too
P Frank Francisco – Hope he keeps the job
P David Aardsma – Hope he keeps the job
P Phil Hughes – Hope he starts
P Francisco Liriano – I’m fine with him starting or closing
P Johnny Cueto – Not sure why you’re high on him but I took him
P Kevin Correia – Solid
Bench Aroldis Chapman – Hoping to strike gold
Bench Homer Bailey – Ready to break out I think
Bench Jason Hammel – Meh, decent enough
What do you think?
[Reply]
@Tom Emanski: Well, it’s a deep league, but Harris, Dickerson and Young are pretty bad picks. Your pitching looks better than your hitting, which isn’t a great place to be. The kind of Aroldis pick you did there you should’ve done more with your hitting. I.e., upside late picks. Maybe if dlR or Aroldis break out you can trade them for some hitting help.
[Reply]
March 20th, 2010 at 3:42 pm
I’ll drop one of them for Venable (moving to the 5 hole) and then work the wire for the other 2. Otherwise I don’t think it’s a bad offense.

Hey all, I may need a little help with my Yahoo auction draft next Sunday. Here’s the thing: I’ve got something going on Sunday that might end up making me late to the auction or possibly miss it altogether. Which would be a ridiculous shame considering that’s a big $ league and with my current keepers/$ situation, I’m in better shape heading into the auction than I have been in years. I’m sort of becoming a razzball disciple as I think the site is a riot and smart at the same time, and the commenters seem to know their shizznit. I’m looking to work out a deal where somebody conducts either part or all of the auction for me and I’d either (a) pay you something we could negotiate over email or (b) give you a percentage of potential winnings. It would take up about three hours of your life, max. If anyone is interested, shoot me an email and let’s talk about it. Grey/Rudy, et al, I might repost if I get no response, hope that’s okay. It’s only cuz I love me some Razzball. (jhcbcri@yahoo.com)
Thanks in advance yo.

Hey Grey,
This season when I’ve been doing my mocks I’ve been noticing A LOT of closer available in the last 5 rounds, and I’ve been picking them accordingly, and have usually been ending with 5 closers. Any idea if this is just a by product of people autopicking the last 10 rounds, or are people just forgetting about Dotel and friends? Also, would you recommend snatching up closers till they’re gone and skipping taking any offensive bench players, or leave a few closers on the table.
Thanks a bunch!
[Reply]
@I drink your milkshake.: Closers are always like this, more reason to not buy an expensive one.
@atomeka: I’d want Sizemore.
@Nick0rz: People don’t take mocks that serious, especially not the end rounds of them.

just had 12 team draft. picked 4 of 12.
10 x 10: OPS, BB,1b,2b,3b + 5 standard offense;
K/9, Blnsv, IP, L, QS + 5 pitching standard categories:
1b – Votto
2b – Cano
3b – M Young
SS – Alexie Ram
MI – Al Escobar
CI – C Pena
OF x 4 – Braun, Granderson, Lind, CarGo
UT – Vlad, Nick Johnson
Bn – K Johnson, Podsednick
SP – Nolassco, CBills, Garza, Slowey, Sanchez, Harden
RP – Wagner, Frank Frank, MGonzales, C Perez, D Bard, L Gregerson
Obviously, i have no catcher (how’s that for a punt!) so i will likely drop either one of the middle relievers (lgregerson) or kelly johnson or podsednik and grab AJ perzynski or john baker.
Went offense early and often, so had to piecemeal the staff with a bunch of middle relievers and will be mining the wire for SP, but i think i did alright. no flexibility though…
[Reply]
March 20th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
@Grey: Rivera Broxton or K-Rod?
[Reply]
@ETMcgee: Ha! Nice punt. What are you doing with Podsednik? Get a catcher. If you feel like you had to piecemeal the staff, you did a good job of it. Your offense doesn’t look that good though, so I’m not sure if you went early and often in the right areas. I see Votto, Cano, Braun, Grandy, Pena and Lind guys worth top 100 picks. So that’s 4 top 100 starters, but I don’t see that. I see 1 maybe 2. That means you reached somewhere. I guess Young’s better in this league setup….
[Reply]
@Mini Doughnuts: No, I wouldn’t.
[Reply]
March 20th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
@Grey: is my math wrong, or does your previous list include 6 guys as opposed to 4 top 100 starters? (braun, votto, cano, grandy, lind, pena, with fringe myoung)
it is a league with a bunch of solid players who know each other and who don’t draft by the preset rankings, so there were some reaches for sure and some others were drafting guys partially to spite other players (or to use their man crushes for trades).
Michael Young was a little reach at #69, but zimmerman/wright/mini donk were gone at begining of r2, pablo/youk gone early in r3, even chone was taken already, so i didn’t want to punt 3b/SS and C.
Nolassco was #93 and CBills was a little reach at #100 (but upper-middle class pitching was getting pretty slim). next pick was CarGo at #117 (i’m pretty high on him this year, like i was on adam jones last year) and garza at #124.
I probably should have taken jay bruce or carlos quentin (damn his low preseason rank, gets buried in the draft list) instead of vlad @#148.
Grabbed podsednik cuz it was the last round, late at night (1/2 league lives in asia), i was high and was trying to watch the blazers basketball game, so you could say there wasn’t much thought to it. just going to wait for the waivers to clear and grab a catcher (if i’ve punted this far, certainly won’t waste a waiver claim on a catcher).

Sup Grey. Just did my first auction draft at ESPN. Man that is brutal waiting for those last few bargains. I think i had a good gameplan going in and stuck to it and my budget for the most part. Here is how it played out.
C – Soto
1 – Howard
2 – Cano
3 – Zimmerman
SS- Andrus
OF- Holliday, Lind, Either, McCutchen, Bourbon
MI- Aaron Hill
CI – Morales
Util – Vernon Wells, Nolan Reimold
SP- Lincicum, Verlander, J Johnson, Billingsley, Wandy Rod, Ervin Santana, Strasburn, Arnoldis Chapman
RP- Fransico, Aardsma, Jenks
Spent 6 total on my closers and catcher. Loaded up on power bats and arms and got my steals late with Bourbon and Andrus. Speed costs alot more at ESPN auctions as the computer bidders drove up the prices on everyone. No deals until the very end when they were closed out. I like this team but want to put it to the Grey test.

Grey…I don’t remember your take on Brandon Webb? You like him for a DL stash who can reap benefits for 2/3 of a season?
I can trade some cheap $1-$2 back-ups for him in a deep 20-team salary cap keeper league, but he’ll cost me $7 ($70 total team salary). He’d then cost me $8 next year, (if I chose to keep him for 2011).
I have $10 cap room, so I’m thinking about doing it. Invest in him or wait for something better?

@HoneyNutIchiros: Nice team name. No idea how many teams are in that league.
@Mark: Perez will be the closer for at least two months. Wood will be DL’d at the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t drop him.
@Adam: Yeah, but there’s upside for more.
@Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): Sure, if you can get him for cheap and have DL room.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin’ man,
the Skipper brave and sure,
five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour,
a three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
the Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.
The ship aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
with Gilligan,
the Skipper too.
A millionaire and his wife,
a movie star,
the proffessor and Mary Ann,
here on Gilligan’s Isle.
(Ending verse)
So this is the tale of our castaways,
there here for a long long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
it’s an uphill climb.
The first mate and his Skipper too
will do their very best,
to make the others comf’terble
in their tropic island nest.
No phone ,no lights, no motor car,
not a single luxury
like Robinson Crusoe
it’s primitive as can be.
So join us here each week my friends,
you’re sure to get a smile,
from seven stranded castaways
here on Gilligan’s Isle!

@grandysdandy: Maybe on Latos, but doubtful. I’d trade for Lee if the deal were right.

BENCH – Colby Rasmus (22)
BENCH – Scott Sizemore (24)

I wound up punting 1B/CI, taking guys who can give me 25 hr and 85rbi each as a baseline. If either Davis or LaRoche breakout, and I think they both can, Im golden. BA is a little suspect, but I think this lineup can give me .275, which would put me in the top half of that category. I have alot of power, and sb i think im good too. Matusz, Brian SP BAL
Romero, Ricky SP TOR
Would’ve been enough, but it’s a small issue.
@Mini Doughnuts: Figgins, Hill…
@Elijah: Looks nice so far.
@quimmy: LaRoche is 30 years old, he’s not a breakout candidate. Pitching’s obviously more solid than the hitting, which isn’t great since pitching is more fickle than hitting. Sure have a lot of bench hitters too, no idea why. Finally, you’re low on power by a decent amount in my estimation.

My league starts 11 batters and based on ur projections (and me giving laroche 25hr) I am slated for 267hr. That’s lacking? Where should I be at?
Agree on laroche not being a breakout, I should have said I am optimistic he can do btr than his projections.

Unfortunately for me, I think I waited toooo long on my C’s (stupid 2C format) and had to settle for Ramon Hernandez (rd 23) and JR Towles (rd 29). What are your takes on Towles? He has been “touted” for a while obviously, and seems to be seeing the ball well this spring, but Todd Van Popple was “pitching” well at one point also.
Secondly, in that same league, I kind of went stupid and took Carlos Santana (3 C’s, have I not learned anything from you at all?) But, when do you expect Santana to start getting significant PT? over/under June 1st?

Aside from the obvious “that is the dumbest idea ever” what do you guys think about a H2H snake draft league with 5×5 + obp, complete games, and grand slams?
Does Halladay move up a round or two? I rarely draft pitchers before the 7th or so, but I may be inclined to pick him up if available in the 3rd.

Grey, I had my draft last Sunday, but sadly I couldn’t make it….I left my chances up to auto-draft. This is the team I got: Its a 12 team league ROTO 6X6 (Ks and HLDS added) Next year we can keep whoever we want for 2 rounds more than what we drafted them this year. So next year I can keep Napoli for a 15th round price.
C Mike Napoli (LAA – C) (Rd 17)
1B Albert Pujols (StL – 1B) (Rd 1)
2B Robinson Canó (NYY – 2B) (Rd 4)
3B Ryan Zimmerman (Was – 3B) (Rd 3)
SS Jimmy Rollins (Phi – SS) (Rd 2)
CI Nick Johnson (NYY – 1B) (Rd 23)
MI Ian Stewart (Col – 2B,3B) (Rd 11)

LF Carlos Quentin (CWS – LF) (Rd 9)
CF Josh Hamilton (Tex – CF,RF) (Rd 7)
RF Jay Bruce (Cin – RF) (Rd 14)
OF Vernon Wells (Tor – CF) (Rd 18)
Util Vladimir Guerrero (Tex – Util) (Rd 16)
BN Ian Desmond (Was – 2B,SS) (Pick up)
SP Johan Santana (NYM – SP) (Rd 5)
SP Cole Hamels (Phi – SP) (Rd 6)
RP Brian Fuentes (LAA – RP) (Rd 12)
RP Chris Pérez (Cle – RP) (Pickup)
P Mike Adams (SD – RP) (Rd 21)
P Clayton Kershaw (LAD – SP) (Rd
P Chad Billingsley (LAD – SP) (Rd 10)
P Roy Oswalt (Hou – SP) (Rd 13)
BN Edwin Jackson (Ari – SP) (Rd 15)
BN Kevin Slowey (Min – SP) (Pick up)
BN Ervin Santana (LAA – SP) (Pick up)
BN Franklin Morales (Col – RP) (Pick up)
I don’t think its a bad team, really power heavy and almost no speed…I’ll probably look to trade power for speed. I would have done the late rounds differently, but thats what you get from auto-draft. I was really glad Ervin Santana and Kevin Slowey were on waivers, I made a quick add of them.
I like my pitching staff, minus Edwin Jackson….And it really stinks that I only got one closer. I’ll be playing the SAGNOF game a lot this season.
Who would you try and trade from my team? I would normally try and trade Nick Johnson, but he doesn’t strike out very much, while Ian Stewart does a lot. There has been some interest in Stewart, and I could probably get a reasonable haul for him.
What do you think Grey? Your insight is very much appreciated!!

@Nate Marcum: Barring better options, hold Towles for now and see if he’s got his act together. Can’t imagine a situation where I’d own three catchers.
@chet steadman: Sure, Halladay in the third sounds fine in that league. Grand Slams are a silly category.
@Elijah: Depends what you’re paying for him.
@GopherDay: You have three closers. Morales and Perez are closers now. And Adams might not be far behind. Your pitching’s sronger than your hitting, so that’s not great. You own Vernon Wells, Nick Swisher and Nick Johnson. That’s terrible.
No, I wouldn’t do that Rajai trade.
@Dad: Looks like a solid team. Really like the hitting a lot. I agree, the pitching might be an issue. I’d add Kuo and Latos when you DL them.
@Eddy: Ha! Yeah, tough when your cheatsheet is read by everyone at the draft. Cantu, huh? Frenchy? Your hitting looks okay, a little light on power and speed. Your starters get real wonky after the top guys on your staff.

Just did my auction draft for the year. It was insane. 18 team roto league, normal categories. Players went for a lot of money. Like, $50′s-$60′s for the top players, with Lincecum going for $72 because ESPN’s draft software screwed up.
Ended up with a lot of starting pitchers, none of which I love. Verlander, DLRosa, Niemann, Slowey, Lilly, and only two closers + Matt Lindstrom and a few other fallbacks.
I’m thinking that trading Niemann, Lilly, and Lindstrom to a team that ended up top heavy in pitching, for one of Greinke or F-H’er would give me the flexibility to maybe trade De La Rosa for some power, if I ended up needing it.
So Niemann, Lilly, Lindstrom for King Felix? Which side would you guys pick?

@Eddy: Fair enough. Just not sure why you would have a bench hitter that no one would own.
@B.J.: Reyes in the 9th is great value, same with CarGo. The back to back picks of pitchers hurt your hitting a bit. You didn’t need Johan there, but maybe you’ll have two insane aces and can trade one. Though the only weak spot on your hitting is at catcher and that’s fine. Overall, you have a very solid team.

@Grey: regarding SLAM as a category, I couldn’t agree more. However, this league has been guaranteed money for me for several years now, and these silly quirks they keep adding only benefit the 2-3 people who don’t still use Y! default rankings as their main source of info.
With that said, my offensive plan is to punt average and take as many three-outcome, middle-of-the-order guys as possible, tacking on cheap SB guys at the end. I assume your Dunns & Papis will be underrated, because OBP and SLAM directly benefit them, and won’t be considered by most players.

@Grey:
Ok so you prefer an 8th SP by dropping Frenchy? Or did I misinterpret and you meant drop either Randy Wolf, Bailey, or Pettite for an available SP?
Guys that are in your SP rankings include:
Chris Young
Brandon Morrow
Brad Penny
Derek Lowe
Randy Wells
That’s everyone who is available in the FA pool from your SP rankings. Dreadful I know, but what do you expect from Razzballers.
I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t drop Zambrano, as bad as he may be for any of them. So it’s narrowed down to Bailey, Frenchy, Wolf, or Pettite. Who do you drop? Or do you just leave everything the way it is?
And another question (sorry, I’m new to the roto thing). There’s a 180 GS limit. Knowing that 8 SP will eat that up too quickly, do I run everyone out there from day one? Or do I let the fliers like Bailey sit on the bench from the first day, see how they perform, then act accordingly?

[Reply]
March 21st, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Well for sure it’d be narrowed down to Rauch and Perez because they have the longest holds over the job, unlike Morales who has the job until Street is back. Personally I’d go Rauch.
[Reply]
@Eddy: You’re not going to be able to start the guys you have now every start anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about extra pitchers. Hold onto Big Z. I’m not crazy about him, but you have him now, so hold tight there. Frenchy’s doing nothing for you and no one’s picking him up anyway. Lose him for Morrow… Unless there’s an RP out there that might get saves.
@AL KOHOLIC: Kemp, A-Gon, Bruce, V-Mart, Nolasco and Pedroia.
@anon: No on Perez better than the other two.
@Maitland: You have like another whole team on your bench. Guess you’re punting saves, which I don’t think is great, but your league doesn’t really reward closers much. Anyway, I like your team for those categories. I’m not a big Coghlan fan, but there he’s all right. I think your pitching is going to be an issue. You took a lot of upside/risk on with those guys.

I would have liked one more good starter – it just did not happen – the 14 teams in this league been playing fantasy ball since 2003 so they all know what they are doing -

Grey, What are your thoughts on this 10-team 6×5 (with hits, using avg). Needs? Surplus?
C- Montero SP – King Felix
1B – Reynolds SP – J Johnson
2B – Cano RP – Soria
3B – ARod RP – Marmol
SS – Andrus P – Kershaw
OF – Holliday P – Oswalt
OF – Granderson P – Soriano
OF – Ethier BN – Price
Util – Bourn BN – Jenks
Util – C. Gonzalez BN – Aardsma
BN – Quentin
BN – S. Drew

@HotZona: Your team looks a little weak on power if you play Bourn. If you switch him out for a different hitter then you’re weak on speed. So you’re gonna have to find a balance when using him. Your pitching looks fine.

Is there any scenario where you’d choose Braun over Utley strategy wise?

Do you know of a good link to lookup projected lineups for MLB teams. I don’t like the one’s I’ve checked out.
