Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

Yeah, I like Anthony Rizzo too.  I like him better than Bryan LaHair even if LaHair was moussing pitchers all last year.  In the PCL, which doesn’t stand for Plutonium Chloride, he hit 38 homers with a .331 average, mashing like his name was Dee Dee Sharp.  Sure, batting in the PCL is like hitting with an aluminum bat in an anti-gravity chamber, but he was the best — the best, Jerry! — winning the PCL MVP.   He’s also old as dog balls at 29.  He was born before some of the pitchers he was facing were born (technically true, but really not that incredible).  Rizzo is the shizzle and when he’s ready, he’ll be up to the majors.  That makes LaHair a placeholder, which is kinda like the Mr. Potato Head I keep on my desk to try out different mustache styles.  In deep leagues, a guy that will bat in the middle of the order (even if it’s only April and May) could have value in the short term.  So what can we expect of Bryan LaHair in 2012 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

The power looks like it can play anywhere in a not-just-Quad-A-type way.  In 129 games in the PCL, he hit 38 homers.  Subtract 25 homers for the light air, add fifteen homers for the wind in Wrigley and subtract eight more because LaHair sounds like he’s related to John Frieda.  That means he should be good for 20 homers if he gets a full season of at-bats, which I don’t think he gets.  He’ll either overstay his welcome by the All-Star Break and be pushing a broom back in his salon or Rizzo will just push him into a platoon.  In deep leagues, that doesn’t matter at Utility.  You’re looking at a flyer that could reap dividends.  If he has a hot April, you’ve backed into a guy worth a lot more than he was a few weeks ago.  If he’s crizzap rolling out the red carpet for Rizzo, then you drop him.  I could also see a scenario where you draft Howard then very late back him up with The Moussed One.  In 2012, I see LaHair giving you 35/15/55/.270 in 350 ABs and definitely worth the sleeper pick.

Even if Rizzo pushes LaHair off the first-base bag in May/June, if LaHair hits, maybe he could get some ABs in the outfield. Wha’ ‘cha think?

PS: That LF/RF/1B position eligibility in Yahoo this season will be very attractive for a dude on my bench. Hope he sticks!

@Yep, I said it!, Yeah, could see that if he hits. Soriano and Byrd will either be injured or traded not before too long.

I appreciate your post on LaHair. I’ve got him at $5 in an NL only keeper league, and was on the fence whether I should keep him. I think I will take the plunge.

@Grey, that’s so great. Anybody can tell you Albert Pujols is good. Going out on a Bryan LaHair limb, that’s the good stuff.

Grey did an auction draft a few days ago, one of my many leagues this year! 10 teamer, what do you make of it:

    C Buster Posey,
    1B Michael Morse,
    2B Chase Utley,
    3B Evan Longoria,
    SS Jimmy Rollins,
    2B/SS Jose Reyes
    1B/3B Aramis Ramirez
    OF Curtis Granderson
    OF Andrew McCutchen
    OF Nelson Cruz
    OF Adam Jones
    OF Carl Crawford
    UTIL David Ortiz
    P Matt Garza
    P Ricky Romero
    P Tommy Hanson
    P Brandon Beachy
    P Jason Motte
    P Cory Luebke
    P Max Scherzer
    P Joakim Soria
    P Joe Nathan
    P Brandon League

Thoughts? Pretty happy with it, never expected to land Grandy and Cruz but thought their value was worth it- same with Papi. Shows how crazy auction leagues can be, I’d say I’ve got no aces but id say I’ve got like 5 no 2/3 SPs and then Scherzer as somehow my worst guy (yet spent under 80 bucks on pitching)…anything can happen in an auction draft.

@TheNewGuy, Offense looks great, your pitching looks like it could give you agita. If Beachy or Hanson step up, then you’re fine, but you have no number one.

I’m gonna show how big of a nerd I really am right here, but P is phosphorus, not plutonium (which is Pu). PCl isn’t possible, anyway. It would have to be either PCl3 or PCl5.

The Reds are likely to use Phillips as a leadoff hitter. Does this alter his value much, or does it just reduce some of his RBI and increase his R? Totally based only on my experience, but it seems that R are easier to find on the wire than RBI, and MI that hit in the middle of the lineup, and therefore get RBI, are harder to come by.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I can’t imagine that sticks… But if it does, it would flipflop his runs and RBIs…

@Grey: In auction leagues with budges around $260 for the regular number of players, how much do you like to allocate to hitters versus pitchers? My perspective is to go heavy on hitting and not pay much for pitching.

12 tm yahoo mixed dynasty league. My keepers are Longoria, Teixeiria, McCann, Cuddyer, Storen.

I have the first pick in the draft since the team I took over was last place, so my top available options are: castro, andrus, uggla, pence, lester, price.

I can make a solid case for any, but seeing as how there aren’t any pitchers except those two until halfway through the “crazy like a fox” tier, I’m leaning toward lester….still kinda tempted by castro or uggla though… any thoughts?

    @Grey
I’ve got Hosmer and C. Santana as keepers this year, yeah I know, good for me… My question is, do I go confidently with the 2nd pick and take Braun or Kemp knowing I’ve got a couple players who can play 1B? Can I really count on Hosmer to take my 1B position all year? Or am I going to struggle catching up to HR and RBI totals without taking Cabrera and using Hosmer as a UTIL? Maybe some combination of Santana, Hosmer, and a late Catcher to fill in? I can’t wrap my head around strategizing this one. I took Hanley 2nd last year and it really bit my ass, so I’m a little concerned with Pujols for some reason. Any insight would help.

Scoring is 5×5 plus OPS, so an extra hitting category… Don’t ask.
    Thanks,
    ‘Nice

I’m having a draft blank. Just entered my draft lobby. Fourth overall. Yahoo.

14-team roto, has OPS as well as AVG.

Votto, Braun and Bautista are the guys I’m looking at. Votto would be my usual choice, but I can’t help but consider Bautista. Never owned him, but I still have that lingering feeling like the bottom is going to drop.

    Suggestions?

@Eddy, I’m thinking going Bautista then taking Teix at the turn. I’m picking #18, he’s at #23.

I’m having trouble knowing how to use the point shares. I am a total stats hound but am trying to come up with a strategy to balance the top 300 (Grey) with the point shares. I did well last year with just the top 300 (and the average mock drafts for reference) to find value at the draft. How should I incorporate the point shares? Balance them with Grey’s top 300? Seems like rubbing dirt on the bible…any thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@boomer19, I use the Point Shares in conjunction with my rankings. It’s easy to see where people are giving and taking points. So if I take, say, Mark Reynolds, I’ll look for someone who has positive points in average… Or if I take someone who’s a negative in RBIs, I look to balance that. Also, I use the dollar values.

need trade advice. im in a 20 team keeper league. 7×7 with ob% and slug and holds and Quality starts. its a 25 man team so 25 rounds. We keep 5 guys.

my 5 keepers are hosmer, reyes, stanton, mccutchen and verlander.

i have been offered votto and one of the guys picks in the 20′s for my mccutchen and 1st rounder.

i am super high on votto and think he could be the #1 hitter in the game this year or in the very near future.

i never draft pitching early but traded for verlander last year and won the 20 team league.

                U think its a good.deal for me

Verlander & 17th pick for votto and say his 20th rd pick

  23. Hi Grey,
I’m in a draft and coming up I think I might have the choice of Ethier or a starter like Hanson or Zimmerman.
My roster is currently like this (standard rosters except only need 4 OF, 15 team league).
    Eric Hosmer
    Robinson Cano
    David Wright
    Elvis Andrus

    Hey Grey,
Just wondering why you’re so down on Teixeira this year. His numbers from last year are eerily similar to Longoria’s:
    Both had BABIPs of .239
    ISO of .246 and .251
    Excellent walk rates
    16% K rates
    18% LD
    17% HR/FB
