We at Razzball realize that exporting our views across the country has damaging consequences on the blogosphere. To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2011 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2011 Giants Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy of The Giants Baseball Blog.
1. For Tim Lincecum, last year the percentage of pitches a batter hit outside the strike zone was 56%, compared to 48.8% the year before. He also lost a mile on his fastball, threw his slider a lot more and his curveball a lot less. Are these causes for concern? Blips on the radar?
A: I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bit alarming. Lincecum went through a real rough stretch in August last season, before really turning it on for the stretch run and the playoffs, and the big reason for that was because he was learning how to pitch without the 95 mph fastball for the first time in his career. The reason for the drop in velocity, in my opinion, has to do with his large workload over the last 3 seasons. However, he really alleviated that concern after watching his performances in October, and although Giants fans will be watching his velocity and control very closely this spring, they are all pretty confident in their ace. A big reason for the drop in curveball and slider ratio was because of his evolving change-up, which is a pitch that really helped him out of his funk.
2. After the struggles of 2010, if Panda starts off slow in 2011, how long will his leash be?
A: That really all depends on the health of the guys around him, mainly Miguel Tejada and Mark DeRosa. If Tejada and DeRosa are both playing well out of Spring and Pablo continues to struggle, Bochy has shown he won’t hesitate to bench him. That said, Pablo has been a man on a mission this winter and has shed a lot of excess weight. Sandoval is still pretty young too, which a lot of people forget (not 25 until August). I would be pretty surprised if he shows up in camp and isn’t ready to go. I’m expecting something in-between his ’09 and ’10 seasons, probably a .285-18-85 line with an .800 OPS.
3. I saw the Fangraphs Database drinking down at the local watering hole, muttering under its breath “Matt Cain can suck it.” Will Cain continue to defy FIP and xFIP or will it catch up to him at some point?
A: Cain’s a fly ball pitcher/power pitcher, and will give up home runs and walk some batters, just because he’s up in the zone so much. But to answer the question, I think he will continue to defy the logic of the FIP stat, mainly because he just doesn’t give up a lot of base hits and pitches extremely well with runners on base.
4. What kind of year do we see from Madison Bumgarner in 2011?
A: I’m very excited about Bumgarner in 2011. He finished off so well in the World Series, and was very key in the Giants championship run and down the stretch in September. This guy has a lot of Matt Cain in him and is extremely mature for a 21 year-old. I’m expecting a slightly better season than his Zips projections suggest just because I think he’ll end up throwing more than 167 innings. I think the era will be slightly below 4, he’ll will 10-13 games and will pitch 180+ innings. He is strikeout pitcher with uncanny control, so I would expect a very good K:BB ratio, but he does give up some hits.
5. The Machine will make an appearance this year at 1) The opening day ring ceremony. 2) 2nd base as a defensive replacement. 3) Pat Burrell’s divorce proceedings as a character witness.
A: I’m hoping we see “The Machine” opening day! LOL, this sure is a fun team to follow!

Okay Father Mustachio, how did I do (10 team mixed Roto 5×5)?
Montero
Fielder
Beckham
Longoria
Desmond
Dunn
Furcal
Braun
Choo
Pence
Ellsbury
Stubbs
Aramis Ramirez
(Tabata and Brignac on bench)
Kershaw
Hamels
Scherzer
Hellickson
Gio Gonzalez
Nolasco
Soria
Putz
CPerez
(Thornton, Holland and Webb on bench)
I think I drafted with a bunch of half-tards
Grey, Do you like Mclellan if he is promoted to the rotation?
I hope Fridays start (1 2/3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER) will lower Tiny Tim’s stock even further.
What can we expect from B Belt in 11?
I’m not sure that I buy into the Brandon Belt hype. What type of player do you think he becomes and what do you see from him this season in the bigs ??
Hey Grey,
I realize this may not be the best place to post this, but my draft is this afternoon and naturally I’d like some last minute advice. I have the 1st pick, my Keeper is Longoria, and the best players available are Hanley or Fielder. Who would you pair with Longo? I know you have Hanley ranked higher than Fielder, but I’m kind of leaning towards Fielder just b/c all of the big thumping 1b’s have already been kept and the next best available 1b after Fielder is Youk/Dunn/Morneau.
Thanks for the advice!
Bryan
Just had to Google “‘The Machine’ + Giants.” LOL, I love Brian Wilson.
Grey : In a 10 team keeper league and I have a strange question.
Would you throw Halladay who would be a first round keeper back and keep Hart at a round 24? Doing so, would free up my first pick to target Wright/Howard/Tex/Fielder/Reyes. I will have the 3rd pick in the draft so one of those guys will be around. Hard pill to swallow sitting around until the 3rd round with talent like that grabbable. Plus I think Hart at round 24 is to good to throw away.
Whats your thoughts?
Here is my current squad
Robinson Canó (NYY – 2B)- 2 Keeper
Víctor Martínez (Bos – C,1B) – 6 keeper
Josh Hamilton (Tex – OF) – 8 keeper
Kevin Youkilis (BOS – 1B,3B) – 16 Keeper
Chris Young (Ari – OF) – FA
José Bautista (Tor – 3B,OF) – FA
Neftali Feliz (Tex – RP) – FA
@Bryan:
Go Hanley in a minute. SS depth is nowhere close to 1B. Plus those 3 you listed are more than enough to fill in for the “thumpers” that are taken.
@Ron: I think your pitching looks better than your hitting, which isn’t a good thing.
@Giant JJ: Nope
@NewBVick: Why? You shouldn’t want to draft Lincecum, so you want him to do good now.
@Charles: Where’s he playing this year?
@Gumby: Unless a big injury happens or Huff or Sandoval flat out don’t hit anything, he’s not playing much this year.
@Bryan: I’d grab Hanley and then wish I grabbed Fielder.
@Jay: Hehe
@Mr2Bits: Yup
@Grey:
One last question. With Halladay going back in, which one would you pick as your last keeper?
Jon Lester (Bos – SP) – 3rd Round
Joakim Soria (KC – RP) – Round 10
Jorge De La Rosa (Col – SP) – Round 17
Juan Pierre (CWS – OF) – Round 16
Alexei Ramírez (CWS – SS) – Round 24
Corey Hart (Mil – OF) – Round 24
@Grey: Old pitching heavy habits die hard.
@Mr2Bits:
seems like alxei 24 is the right call there
I’m wondering your take on a pre-draft trade situation. In my 8 Team H2H league my team is stacked and I can only keep 5 (Fielder, Longoria, Wright, Kemp, CarGo). With people like Big Time Timmy Jim, Kershaw and Holliday not being kept from my team.
Our draft works as such: your 5 keepers are your first five picks, Round 1 starts after the keepers are taken. No other penalties, etc. There are 18 actual draft Rounds after the keepers.
What’s your take on me dealing one (or more) of the guys I can’t keep to gain an extra early Round pick or two? Basically, do you think it’s smart to trade someone like Holliday (who can’t be kept and most likely won’t fall back to me in the draft) for something like a 4th Round pick and give up something like a 12+ Round pick to bunch up some early picks?
Just wondering what you think of this strategy. Much obliged, sir.
Regarding Bumgarner- are we not at all worried about about the effect of 60+ extra IP last season? Funny that’s not an issue in the same chat where Lincecum’s “trouble” is mentioned.
who is this Grey character who LOL’s at the end of posts. My world has just changed, and I am scared.
@Mr2Bits: Hart
@NewBVick: I suppose so…
@Wilsonian: Just keep your guys, forget the picks.
@mauledbypandas: @justin: Guys, I ask the questions, I don’t also provide the answers.
sorry guys I m off topic…
but as rangers fan I must note…
Ian Kinsler is going to hit lead off this year, RW told it again today…
…now I think we can forget on 22 HRs from this guy …around 15+, no more then 20 is better projection…
coz he is not going to hit for power, Rangers want to see him on the bases as lead off ….that means more runs – he will attack 100 runs again and 30 SB…i would give him 75 RBI too
@O’really: I don’t see why a guy with an upper cut swing in a hitters’ park would stop hitting for power.
agreed on kinsler, just because he’s “in the leadoff spot” doesn’t mean he’s going to change his approach at the plate. Hitters in general don’t go up thinking single and get on or swing for the fences…. they take whats given to them and try and put a good bat on it. If it goes for a HR great, if he gets a double he swung the same, or should have…. I dont think the rangers are going to say “dont hit for power kinsler we just need u on first”.
Kinsler needs to worry about staying healthy more than HR’s, SB’s and getting on base.
now it looks like Ian is going to hit lead off because RW want to get HRs from his mind….and its logical…when he was last hitting 30 HR, his BA fell to .250 ….now when he was last year hitting without power, he has high BA…over 0.300 …I just think, and maybe RW thinks too..that Ian cant balance hitting for power with good BA….and you know how he was critized after 2009 for his BA…
@Grey: I still keep my 5 keepers, but I also can trade some of the guys I can’t keep for some earlier picks.
So basically you don’t think it’s worth it to get a couple of additional early round picks?
just watch:
Ian Kinsler 2009 – 146 GB – 262 FB – 77 LD
Ian Kinsler 2010 – 133 GB – 138 FB – 61 LD
u see that difference? dont tell me that cant see he was trying for HRs in 2009 more than in 2010
2009-almost twice more FB than GB
2010-almost same number FB and GB
I just read (Fantasy Baseball Tools) that Matt Thorton has only converted 45% of his 38 save situations. I was excited about him taking over the closer role and running with it, but this gives me pause.
@Wilsonian: No, I don’t think it’s worth it.
@O’really: Think you’re taking two things and saying there’s causality where there isn’t.
ok…. new season maybe open my eyes and show me how crazy I was about Ian…
grey, who do you think is going to be closing games for the rangers if its not neftali?
ojando or lowe or some other guy?
@wilsoniam: Lowe
I’m going to roll the dice with Ogando and hope they choose To put Feliz in the rotation.
thanks. as an afterthought, do you still see neftali closing? or do you think its really poss hes starting?
@Grey: thanks man. Not sure anything will even go down, but it was a scenario you don’t see much on here, so I appreciate the opinion.
@wilsoniam: I think he stays the closer.
@Wilsonian: No problem.
Grey, I tried to follow your advice as much as I could. Things got a bit hectic as I was trying to scratch off drafted players from my list and keep track of what I had done at the same time. I think I have a well balanced offensive team with good upside with my pitchers. If you have any words of wisdom, I’d be deeply gratified.

Grey, thanks for giving it to me straight with my roster. I’m a little lost though. I followed your tutelage (the top this and that) and ended up with three of your top 10 (Longoria, Braun, Fielder) and offensive numbers 33, 35, 36, 78, 80, 82, 91 and 98 from the top 100 (Dunn, Choo, Pence, Aramis Ramirez, Ellsbury, Tabata, Furcal, Stubbs). Along with that, I also chipped in the 50th, 66th and 73rd pitchers from the top 100 (Kershaw, Hamels, Soria). That’s 13 of your top 100, including three of your top 10, yet I’m short offensively?
@Ron: I think your team is pretty stacked
@manfromearth: No idea how many teams.
@Ron: It’s a ten team league, so according to:
http://razzball.com/10-14-16-mixed-league-and-nl-only-al-only-team-averages/
So 267 is average in homers, and I roughly estimated 250 homers on your team, which means you’re below average, which I’m guessing will have you below average on RBIs as well, if the team isn’t the same lay out (5 OFs, etc), I have no idea because you just listed players and not roster slots. If my rough estimate on power while adding in my head was wrong then my bad.
@Ron: BTW, never said your team was terrible. Just think the pitching is stronger than the hitting.
@Grey: To go OT for a moment, what do you (you Grey, not the royal ‘you’) do if you have the 9th pick and Tulo is there (but Howard and Wright have gone as per your top 10) when you’re up?
Do you take him, or reach a spot for Fielder?
Obviously if you’re drafting with Rudy, he’s taken him before you can even put your daquiri down. But what do YOU do?
@Grey I took over a 3 keeper in a 10 team H2H league. My first two are allright (Fielder, Holliday) but my third is Vmart. As you know I would never take a catcher with a third pick. How can I extricate my self from this doodoo? Am picking 10-11 and am thinking of targeting a 2B (Pedroia/Uggla) or a 3B (Aramis, Reynolds, Alvarez) and maybe taking a stud pitcher with my 5th pick. What do you think?
Did an actual ESPN random league draft to test out my 10 team HtH strategy, I doubt I’ll be this fortunate (lotta pitchers came off early) in my real league but at least everyone hung out for the whole draft and I think I got my overall strategy down now: Tell me whatcha think Grey, though I imagine you’ll like it, its mostly your board talking.

Hey lots of Dbacks even.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence but it seems that every time Grey puts up a sleeper blog, within a short time i see three or four sleeper blogs involving the same player from another author. Why don’t they just copy and paste to save the effort of haning to reword it.
If Liriano is traded to the Yankees does his value go up a little, or down a little?
@Grey: Sorry if it struck a nerve. I thought you were answering the questions instead of asking.
@Steve:
You seem to have survived the quake
So I checked out your projections for each of my offensive players and came up with 1095 R, 291 HR, 1130 rbi, 181 sb, .279. I came up a little short of the average for Runs (1120), but exceeded the averages for HR (267) and RBI (1093). I’m almost dead even with the averages for SB (184) and Avg (.279). The league is set to allow us to change rosters once per week and we have a limit of 200 starts from our SPs. Anyway, looks like the offense might be slightly better than average before I’m even able to make a waiver move or adjust during the flow of the season. That said, I think following the razzball list would have to be considered a success this time around. Thanks, Grey, love your work.
Dominic, thanks for the roster review.
Grey, I do think the targets for each league size can be seriously altered by moves throughout the season, especially pitching stats where you stream in guys with two starts, etc. You were right about my pitching though. Just from what I drafted, my projected outcomes look to be in the ballpark of 3.44 ERA, 1.18 Whip, 79W, 100 SV and 1330 K. I figure the W’s and K’s will go up by streaming and consequently the ERA and Whip will be negatively effected. Again, thanks for the review and now I’m off to prep for the next draft!
@Elijah: Yeah, all good here thanks – was over 600 miles south of where I am. It’s real bad down there though. 145 dead and over 200 still missing.
In regards to comment number 33….I picked 7th in a 12 team league.
Grey –
14 team keeper league. I have Josh Johnson, Oswalt, Sanchez and Minor as SP so far — I need a steady hand there. Guy wants Desmond Jennings for Shaun Marcum. Fair value?
Grey –
Off Topic, but had to say – just discovered your site, you’ve got an amazing place here. The Glossary is the best.
I’m intrigued by Point Shares, but play in AL- and NL-only auction leagues. Will that league-specific Point Share info and / or War Room spreadsheet have that info available this year? If not, what’s the best way to use the $ values associated w/ the mixed league Point Shares?
Thanks for any guidance.
@Steve: I’d take Tulo.
@Howard: Sounds good.
@Elijah: Yeah, looks real solid.
@Giant JJ: Down a little.
@manfromearth: I don’t like Beckett at all, not sure why you took Liriano and Gallardo, team does look fine overall though.
@emc squared: Sounds fair.
@Jose Tartabull: Thanks for the kind words! Those single league Point Shares should be up soon.
@Grey: Sorry if this has been asked before or if I am just being retarded, but on the Auction Draft War Room Spreadsheet, the “Prof 12 Tm” column in grey is blank.
1 – Do we need to populate the data ourselves?
2 – If yes, does the data typed in produce anything on any other tab, cell, etc.?
Thanks!
@Sean A: Best to ask that one in the war room post. Someone will answer.
@Steve: Thanks!
Hey grey, do you have any top holds guys that you didn’t mention in your top 20 MRP list? If so who? Looking for low era & whip too obviously
Does anyone else think it’s a good sign that Kemp is stealing bags in Spring Training?
@Grey I read an article that puts Andrus at 2 and Kinsler at 1 (in the batting order). How would/will that affect either player? Is Andrus still that underrated SS at the top of a Rollins and Jeter tier?
@Trick dad: Romo, Jansen, Adams…
@Wilsonian: I try not to pay attention to spring training stats, but Kemp’s about to have a monster year.
@MichaelWonder: Don’t think it changes much with either of them:
http://razzball.com/lineup-position-impact-on-runs-rbi/
@Grey: yeah, I rarely, if ever, pay any attention to Spring Training stats, but I’d be lying if I said I want a little happy to see he got a steal yesterday.
@Steve: Have you been listening to Girl Talk? Triple Double might be the best song ever (within the last 2 months).
@Grey: Is it part of All Day? Been working my way through that.
Also, your avowed 1B/3B policy in the first two rounds means you’re not going to own Kemp much, no?
@Steve: 99.9% of my drafts are auctions and I already own Kemp in one of them. It’s track 9 on All Day.
@Grey: Gotcha and gotcha. You doing more auctions than normal this year? What did he cost?
@Steve: $34, highest priced guy by a lot. Seems to be that I have more auctions. I have a snake today, but I gave it to Smokey to draft because I’m watching the Oscars.
I think Bumgarner needs some more hype. Everyone was over his hype before he even got overhyped. . .
Anyway, Grey, 13 team 5×5 keeper, do you keep $6 McGehee or $30 Youk?
@in: McGehee

@Steve: Have you figured out who you are keeping in our Yahoo league?
Utley has tendinitis on his knee and Stanton just suffered a quad strain.
A lot of people have been dropping this spring. What the eff.
@vinko: Yes.
@Eddy: The Stanton thing is probably no biggie, but that’s a problem for Utley. That’s going to linger, especially on a guy who, though much younger than me(!) – ain’t so young any more.
Grey,
You may not want to answer this for whatever reason, but who is the expert you respect the most out there other than the guys who write for this site?
@vinko: Oh – you want to know who they are (emoticon)…
Grey : Who would be your first pick in a 10 team keeper league to fill my biggest need with my keepers in mind? I won’t have a second round pick but will have a 1,3,4,5.

@mockme: Hard to fault with any of it. Looks really strong.
@Van Hammersly: Your pitching looks fine. I like your hitting, but probably would be a problem on average.
@Eddy: Thanks for the heads up! Don’t think these are major concerns.
@Giant JJ: I don’t read anyone else. I used to read ESPN before starting the blog but that was reason to start the blog.
@Mr2Bits: You have four picks and gave me 6 names. Take everyone but one pitcher and Cruz.
@Mr2Bits: Oh, I misunderstood, those numbers are rounds? Take two starters then best available.
@Grey:
So I should grab Halladay in round 1 then another starter in round 3? I was thinking Reyes in round one but with Andrus, Jeter, Ramirez still on the board I feel as though he would be a waste of a first round to fill my SS.
@Mr2Bits: I’m assuming this is a shallow league but have no idea. Yeah, take Halladay.

Crikey.
@Steve: I know, pa-dow.
@grey: thanks for checking out my mock, I thought it was pretty solid, only one autodrafter for the first 10-12 rounds, then about round 12-15 a few more dropped out, and after that it was kinda crappy.
In a vacuum, would you rather have Reynolds and Eric Young Jr., or Raburn and someone like Tabata, or Gardner? I think I have to take power and speed in either the 2B spot/UTIL spot to round my hitting out, and am not sure which combination would be preferable to you.
@Grey: And the name of the film she’s nominated for? You couldn’t make it up.
@mockme: No problem.

Is it just too early for mock drafts? Or are more informed drafters somewhere other than MDC? I was happy to get into a full draft on MDC but ended up with a team that I know it would be impossible to replicate in a real league. After I got Gardner in the 14th I just stuck around to see what the team could end up looking like.

In a 12-team H2H league, what are resonable games-started or innigs pitched limits – either over a week, or over a season – to discourage streaming?
Hi Grey, would you take Miggy #3 in drafts and feel comfortable if he’s there?
@fitz: I’m not Grey, but I think he’d say yes and point you here:
http://razzball.com/2011-fantasy-baseball-rankings-top-10/
@Steve: Scratch that. The commish has just instituted a 10 moves per-week limit to keep a lid on streaming.
Does anyone play in a league with this option?
Steve, I would think so too but just wanted to make sure nothing changed after the DUI which I don’t see have any impact on his season.
@Steve: 10 moves a week, I was in a league with 3 moves a week, I think you will be fine.
@fitz:
The DUI dropped him from #1 to #3
@Steve:
Yeah, last year the guy who won my H2H was a full-on streamer.
That was partially my fault as well since I we didn’t put waivers in the league. But this year I put a 1-day waiver and a 7 move limit.
10 is more than enough and you’ll find that you rarely use 3-4 in a week.
@Eddy: Cool.
I hope it does cut down on streaming (I kind of nudged the commish to so something about it). We’ve been playing this league long enough for guys to manage their pitching resources.
As the rules have allowed it, I’ve streamed where necessary in my time, but I think it’s better if guys have to think twice before resorting to it.
@Steve: Just out of curiosity, why would you like to limit streaming?
@Dominic: Team looks really solid.
@royce!: Yeah, that team just looks silly.
@Steve: It’s really awful.
@royce!: Because I’m sick of having guys do it to me!
@Steve: Also means guys have to take a bit of care when they draft pitching instead of just relying on being first to the FA wire.
Not that I haven’t raced to the wire at the speed of light plenty of times in the past myself (emoticon).
grey, 2 questions abt 2nd basemen
do you think jose lopez wins the 2b job in col?
also, do you think raburn plays 2b at all this year in det? he doesnt have elig in this one league im in – but would only need 5 games to gain..
thank you!!!
@Steve: Fair enough. I always feel like a million bucks when I win the race to the wire…if I lose, I always feel like the person who won clearly lacks any real life. Quite delusional, actually. Probably best to avoid such contradictions.
i wish that there were 10 more roy oswalts to go around .
i would love for each of my opponents to spend an 8th round pick (or higher)
on him .
mdc has him ranked 88th (91.38 adp)
this is tremendous value !!
cheers .
@Wilsonian:
@Grey:
billy butler had a stolen base vs the rangers , yesterday .
(tied with kemp) .
cust kayin’
grey, what do you think of tom gorzellany in a really deep 16 team league?
@wilsoniam: No and no.
@pjtres: Bleh
at this time, i would just like to point out that when Wilson was made closer, Grey advised razzballers to steer clear. like 38 saves and 3 yrs later, dude is one of the elite. Doh!
@pjtres: please let me be in a league with you!
@and1mcgee: whys that? we are 27 rounds deep and im looking for a last guy.
i have no idea who you are, but its doubtful from some of your posts youd be able to compete. good luck sir. lol
@NewBVick:
Are you really suggesting that because Tiny Tim gave up 4 hits in the first preseason game of the year and allowed 3 runs that his stock should fall? Interesting logic that a preseason start in Arizona in front of 5,000 people holds more water with you than Game 5 of the World Series with millions of eyes on him.
@pjtres: you’re right. i suck.
sorry, tom gorzellany is tight. excuse my comment.
@mcgee: no prob man. it happens.
