To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2011 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2011 Giants Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy of The Giants Baseball Blog.
1. For Tim Lincecum, last year the percentage of pitches a batter hit outside the strike zone was 56%, compared to 48.8% the year before. He also lost a mile on his fastball, threw his slider a lot more and his curveball a lot less. Are these causes for concern? Blips on the radar?
A: I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bit alarming. Lincecum went through a real rough stretch in August last season, before really turning it on for the stretch run and the playoffs, and the big reason for that was because he was learning how to pitch without the 95 mph fastball for the first time in his career. The reason for the drop in velocity, in my opinion, has to do with his large workload over the last 3 seasons. However, he really alleviated that concern after watching his performances in October, and although Giants fans will be watching his velocity and control very closely this spring, they are all pretty confident in their ace. A big reason for the drop in curveball and slider ratio was because of his evolving change-up, which is a pitch that really helped him out of his funk.
2. After the struggles of 2010, if Panda starts off slow in 2011, how long will his leash be?
A: That really all depends on the health of the guys around him, mainly Miguel Tejada and Mark DeRosa. If Tejada and DeRosa are both playing well out of Spring and Pablo continues to struggle, Bochy has shown he won’t hesitate to bench him. That said, Pablo has been a man on a mission this winter and has shed a lot of excess weight. Sandoval is still pretty young too, which a lot of people forget (not 25 until August). I would be pretty surprised if he shows up in camp and isn’t ready to go. I’m expecting something in-between his ’09 and ’10 seasons, probably a .285-18-85 line with an .800 OPS.
3. I saw the Fangraphs Database drinking down at the local watering hole, muttering under its breath “Matt Cain can suck it.” Will Cain continue to defy FIP and xFIP or will it catch up to him at some point?
A: Cain’s a fly ball pitcher/power pitcher, and will give up home runs and walk some batters, just because he’s up in the zone so much. But to answer the question, I think he will continue to defy the logic of the FIP stat, mainly because he just doesn’t give up a lot of base hits and pitches extremely well with runners on base.
4. What kind of year do we see from Madison Bumgarner in 2011?
A: I’m very excited about Bumgarner in 2011. He finished off so well in the World Series, and was very key in the Giants championship run and down the stretch in September. This guy has a lot of Matt Cain in him and is extremely mature for a 21 year-old. I’m expecting a slightly better season than his Zips projections suggest just because I think he’ll end up throwing more than 167 innings. I think the era will be slightly below 4, he’ll will 10-13 games and will pitch 180+ innings. He is strikeout pitcher with uncanny control, so I would expect a very good K:BB ratio, but he does give up some hits.
5. The Machine will make an appearance this year at 1) The opening day ring ceremony. 2) 2nd base as a defensive replacement. 3) Pat Burrell’s divorce proceedings as a character witness.
A: I’m hoping we see “The Machine” opening day! LOL, this sure is a fun team to follow!

I realize this may not be the best place to post this, but my draft is this afternoon and naturally I’d like some last minute advice. I have the 1st pick, my Keeper is Longoria, and the best players available are Hanley or Fielder. Who would you pair with Longo? I know you have Hanley ranked higher than Fielder, but I’m kind of leaning towards Fielder just b/c all of the big thumping 1b’s have already been kept and the next best available 1b after Fielder is Youk/Dunn/Morneau.

Grey : In a 10 team keeper league and I have a strange question.
Would you throw Halladay who would be a first round keeper back and keep Hart at a round 24? Doing so, would free up my first pick to target Wright/Howard/Tex/Fielder/Reyes. I will have the 3rd pick in the draft so one of those guys will be around. Hard pill to swallow sitting around until the 3rd round with talent like that grabbable. Plus I think Hart at round 24 is to good to throw away.
Whats your thoughts?

I’m wondering your take on a pre-draft trade situation. In my 8 Team H2H league my team is stacked and I can only keep 5 (Fielder, Longoria, Wright, Kemp, CarGo). With people like Big Time Timmy Jim, Kershaw and Holliday not being kept from my team.
Our draft works as such: your 5 keepers are your first five picks, Round 1 starts after the keepers are taken. No other penalties, etc. There are 18 actual draft Rounds after the keepers.
What’s your take on me dealing one (or more) of the guys I can’t keep to gain an extra early Round pick or two? Basically, do you think it’s smart to trade someone like Holliday (who can’t be kept and most likely won’t fall back to me in the draft) for something like a 4th Round pick and give up something like a 12+ Round pick to bunch up some early picks?
Just wondering what you think of this strategy. Much obliged, sir.
Regarding Bumgarner- are we not at all worried about about the effect of 60+ extra IP last season? Funny that’s not an issue in the same chat where Lincecum’s “trouble” is mentioned.

Ian Kinsler is going to hit lead off this year, RW told it again today…
…now I think we can forget on 22 HRs from this guy …around 15+, no more then 20 is better projection…
coz he is not going to hit for power, Rangers want to see him on the bases as lead off ….that means more runs – he will attack 100 runs again and 30 SB…i would give him 75 RBI too
@O’really: I don’t see why a guy with an upper cut swing in a hitters’ park would stop hitting for power.
agreed on kinsler, just because he’s “in the leadoff spot” doesn’t mean he’s going to change his approach at the plate. Hitters in general don’t go up thinking single and get on or swing for the fences…. they take whats given to them and try and put a good bat on it. If it goes for a HR great, if he gets a double he swung the same, or should have…. I dont think the rangers are going to say “dont hit for power kinsler we just need u on first”.
Kinsler needs to worry about staying healthy more than HR’s, SB’s and getting on base.
now it looks like Ian is going to hit lead off because RW want to get HRs from his mind….and its logical…when he was last hitting 30 HR, his BA fell to .250 ….now when he was last year hitting without power, he has high BA…over 0.300 …I just think, and maybe RW thinks too..that Ian cant balance hitting for power with good BA….and you know how he was critized after 2009 for his BA…

I just read (Fantasy Baseball Tools) that Matt Thorton has only converted 45% of his 38 save situations. I was excited about him taking over the closer role and running with it, but this gives me pause.

I followed your tutelage (the top this and that) and ended up with three of your top 10 (Longoria, Braun, Fielder) and offensive numbers 33, 35, 36, 78, 80, 82, 91 and 98 from the top 100 (Dunn, Choo, Pence, Aramis Ramirez, Ellsbury, Tabata, Furcal, Stubbs). Along with that, I also chipped in the 50th, 66th and 73rd pitchers from the top 100 (Kershaw, Hamels, Soria). That’s 13 of your top 100, including three of your top 10, yet I’m short offensively?

So 267 is average in homers, and I roughly estimated 250 homers on your team, which means you’re below average, which I’m guessing will have you below average on RBIs as well, if the team isn’t the same lay out (5 OFs, etc), I have no idea because you just listed players and not roster slots. If my rough estimate on power while adding in my head was wrong then my bad.
@Ron: BTW, never said your team was terrible. Just think the pitching is stronger than the hitting.
@Grey: To go OT for a moment, what do you (you Grey, not the royal ‘you’) do if you have the 9th pick and Tulo is there (but Howard and Wright have gone as per your top 10) when you’re up?

How can I extricate my self from this doodoo? Am picking 10-11 and am thinking of targeting a 2B (Pedroia/Uggla) or a 3B (Aramis, Reynolds, Alvarez) and maybe taking a stud pitcher with my 5th pick. What do you think?

Maybe it’s just a coincidence but it seems that every time Grey puts up a sleeper blog, within a short time i see three or four sleeper blogs involving the same player from another author. Why don’t they just copy and paste to save the effort of haning to reword it.

You seem to have survived the quake
So I checked out your projections for each of my offensive players and came up with 1095 R, 291 HR, 1130 rbi, 181 sb, .279. I came up a little short of the average for Runs (1120), but exceeded the averages for HR (267) and RBI (1093). I’m almost dead even with the averages for SB (184) and Avg (.279). The league is set to allow us to change rosters once per week and we have a limit of 200 starts from our SPs. Anyway, looks like the offense might be slightly better than average before I’m even able to make a waiver move or adjust during the flow of the season. That said, I think following the razzball list would have to be considered a success this time around. Thanks, Grey, love your work.

Grey, I do think the targets for each league size can be seriously altered by moves throughout the season, especially pitching stats where you stream in guys with two starts, etc. You were right about my pitching though. Just from what I drafted, my projected outcomes look to be in the ballpark of 3.44 ERA, 1.18 Whip, 79W, 100 SV and 1330 K. I figure the W’s and K’s will go up by streaming and consequently the ERA and Whip will be negatively effected. Again, thanks for the review and now I’m off to prep for the next draft!

Is it just too early for mock drafts? Or are more informed drafters somewhere other than MDC? I was happy to get into a full draft on MDC but ended up with a team that I know it would be impossible to replicate in a real league. After I got Gardner in the 14th I just stuck around to see what the team could end up looking like.

Drafting teams like this does not make me feel prepared for my regular leagues, let alone the RCL.

In a 12-team H2H league, what are resonable games-started or innigs pitched limits – either over a week, or over a season – to discourage streaming?

@Steve: Scratch that. The commish has just instituted a 10 moves per-week limit to keep a lid on streaming.
Does anyone play in a league with this option?
Steve, I would think so too but just wanted to make sure nothing changed after the DUI which I don’t see have any impact on his season.
@Steve: 10 moves a week, I was in a league with 3 moves a week, I think you will be fine.

Yeah, last year the guy who won my H2H was a full-on streamer.
That was partially my fault as well since I we didn’t put waivers in the league. But this year I put a 1-day waiver and a 7 move limit.
10 is more than enough and you’ll find that you rarely use 3-4 in a week.
@Eddy: Cool.
I hope it does cut down on streaming (I kind of nudged the commish to so something about it). We’ve been playing this league long enough for guys to manage their pitching resources.
As the rules have allowed it, I’ve streamed where necessary in my time, but I think it’s better if guys have to think twice before resorting to it.
@Steve: Just out of curiosity, why would you like to limit streaming?

Not that I haven’t raced to the wire at the speed of light plenty of times in the past myself (emoticon).

@Steve: Fair enough. I always feel like a million bucks when I win the race to the wire…if I lose, I always feel like the person who won clearly lacks any real life. Quite delusional, actually. Probably best to avoid such contradictions.

Interesting logic that a preseason start in Arizona in front of 5,000 people holds more water with you than Game 5 of the World Series with millions of eyes on him.
