Here at Razzball, besides doling out fantasy baseball advice, we also host a contest to field the worst fantasy baseball team.  (You can win a hot tub this year.  I know, crazy.)  The worst fantasy baseball league sign-ups are just about at capacity, but if you’re finding us late in the preseason, you might still be able to get in, or not.  I really have no idea.  It’s Rudy’s department.  But I’m in one of these leagues, so I thought I’d share with you my fantasy baseball worst top 20 list.  This, here, is the cream of the crap.  When I did my worst fantasy baseball rankings, it took far longer than for my other leagues.  You literally have to change every single default ranking (except Howie Kendrick who was about 150 regularly and turned out to be about the same after re-ranking– there’s always one, I tell ya!).  Just a few words about these schmohawks, catchers are all bad, excluding about 5 guys, so there’s no reason to grab a catcher early.  But, even with that said, I couldn’t lower Kendall past 10th overall.  He’s just too awfully good.  Also, there were no pitchers in my top 20.  Again, there are so many terribly terrific pitchers, it was hard to move Brian Bannister up.  Though, I really wanted to.  Finally, just because someone is in my best worst fantasy baseball top 20, it doesn’t mean I absolutely hate them.  Steals aren’t counted, so Nyjer, Bourn, etc. are invaluably bad.  Anyway, here’s my fantasy baseball worst top 20:

Worst Fantasy Baseball Team

    Oof. Seeing EverCab on the list hurts, even though I know his steals aren’t being counted.

    Also, Pennington on the list hurts from an A’s fan perspective. It’ll probably hurt more to follow them this year, but still. Why the hell did Crosby have to suck so much!?

  2. polczek5 says:
    (link)

    @Lava: “Pennington on the list hurts from an A’s fan perspective”

    I feel your pain! It’s good to know I’m not the only one…

    Whats a good website for customizing league settings to get rankings/projections? Specifically whats a good website to do this for the Razzball point leagues?

  4. I am the Liquor says:

    @I am the Liquor: Baseballmonster looks good, guess I answered my own question

  5. tyler says:

    @I am the Liquor: lastplayerpicked.com might work for you too. Or not – I know it has cusomizable ranks, but don’t know if it would work well for razzball specifically.

  6. shydog says:
    (link)

    did my rankings for this yesterday.much,much harder than for a regular,best team wins league. i have 7 top-twenty matches with this list.

  7. ichirosan says:
    (link)

    @shydog: Yeah, same here… I actually haven’t done mine, just tiers for every position… some of those are not even locks to get starting jobs, so that list will be very fluid.

  8. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @shydog: Yeah, the best part of it is most people have all different rankings, so the draft goes super fast and everyone think they have a terrible/great team.

  9. Nate Marcum says:
    (link)

    Grey,

    This Friday is my first NFBC event, and I just found out I have the #1 Pick.. Fitting that my team name is MVPujols and I am drafting at Pujols’ restaurant. I really want to know if I am making the correct moves, I feel that I am, but some agreement would make me feel a little better. *Until the draft actually gets here and people snipe all my picks*.

    I take Pujols first followed by a combo of Zimmerman/Upton or Zimm/Holliday or Zimm/Sizemore. I think we will agree there.

    The next turn I find myself taking Granderson/Lester followed by either Dunn/Hamels or Cruz/Hamels….is that too early for a Lester/Hamels combo, or should I wait for another round and see if Nolasco etc. is avail..I really think Lester and Hamels are gonna have huge years and want to own them, just not at the risk of reaching too much.

  10. Nate Marcum says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Thanks…so following your “when to draft SP” list, waiting a few rounds a going for a Slowey, maybe Buckholz would be wise.

  11. majortommy says:
    (link)

    I am really looking forward to this style. Would Jeff Clemente be a good play at catcher if he gets the first base job in Pittsburgh? He will essentially have full time at bats.

  12. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Nate Marcum: Yup

    @majortommy: At 1st base, he could give top 20 overall value. The only thing that worries me is his upside.

  13. Tom Reale says:
    (link)

    @majortommy: Vernon Wells for OF…Hey Vernon, Have I told you lately that I hate you?

  14. Eddy says:
    (link)

    @Grey:
    Do you feel better going Big 1B/Kinsler/Zimmerman or Big 1B/Holliday/Zimmerman in the first 3 rounds?

  15. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Tom Reale: Vernon would be a good play, but I gotta imagine they need to start taking at bats away from him at some point right? Brett Gardner perhaps?

  16. Tom Reale says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Sanchez is walking like he just got his 3rd DUI! What up with that, what up with that?

  17. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Tom Reale: I can’t wait to own Joe Saunders in that league! OH SWEET REVENGE!!!! I will use his powers of evil for my own benefit. I shall call him Bizarro Saunders!

  18. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Tom Reale: Sanchez reminds me of a poor mans Oliver Perez.

  19. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Tom Reale: Ha!

    @Eddy: Kinsler… Holliday… Dealer’s choice. I’d go in that order.

    @majortommy: Gardner’s a nice name, as long as he stays at the bottom of the order.

    @Tom Reale: Working on kinks maybe…

    @majortommy: How dare you.

  20. Eddy says:
    (link)

    @Grey:
    Thanks. And how far would Felix/Greinke have to fall for you to go against your strategy and draft them?

  21. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Eddy: 4th to 5th rounds.

  22. Jo says:
    (link)

    Hey Grey, just did my first real draft and I’m a little concerned w/ the pitching. Do you think I’m safe with this (10 team league) or should I try and trade for someone?

    Hamels, Nolasco, Floyd, Cueto, Sanchez, Scherzer, Chapman, Strasburg, Marcum, Chamberlain

  23. Eddy says:
    (link)

    @Grey:
    I had that choice in a current mock, but I decided to go with McCann for a change and hope Granderson didn’t get drafted.

    Alas, he got picked one turn before me, so I “settled” for Lind.

    Yay or nay?

  24. majortommy says:
    (link)

    What the heck is this Pujols for Howard trade talk crap?

  25. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Jo: You went a little crazy on upside. You should be fine. You need to work the waiver wire, but everyone does in a 10 team league.

    @Eddy: You lost 25 steals and 5 homers while gaining little.

  26. Eddy says:
    (link)

    @majortommy:
    I saw that, but I doubt anything will happen. That’d be pretty intense though
    @Grey:
    Noted. I’ll just reach a round for Grandy next time and hope the little league park does big time wonders.

    Dear Rudy (this is pertinent to previous thread; not sure if I should post here or there):

    I am also targeting Uggla this year, weirdly, even though I kind of hate him. My theme this year is Unpopular and Unsexy.

    Floyd or De La Rosa in 6×6 with quality starts?

  30. Bob says:
    (link)

    In my first draft in a five OF/CI/MI 12 team league, I punted 1B and ended up with Big Papi as my 1B and Travis Snider as my Util. On my bench, I have Luke Scott (1B and OF eligible) and Elijah Dukes. Should I drop any of the above to pick up Nick Johnson? The team is very balanced otherwise, so just trying to get the most production possible in a vacuum. Thanks, as always.

  31. Matt B says:

    12 Team, 5×5 Weekly h2h 1-win

    How would you rank these for this year + penalty free keeper?
    B Anderson, S Baker, K Slowey, F Liriano, M Scherzer, J Shields

    In round 9 would it be stupid to pass on OF Adam Jones for any of them? I only have Greinke so I’m getting worried about SP but this list is not inspiring.

  32. Baron Von Vulturewins

  34. danimal35 says:

    Have the fifth pick in an upcoming 12-team draft and did this mock trying to adhere to Grey’s recently posted H2H rules. Ended up with:

    1. Ryan Braun (Mil – OF)
    2. David Wright (NYM – 3B)
    3. Justin Upton (Ari – OF)
    4. Mark Reynolds (Ari – 1B,3B)
    5. José Reyes (NYM – SS)
    6. Josh Hamilton (Tex – OF)
    7. Adam Jones (Bal – OF)
    8. Carlos Quentin (CWS – OF)
    9. Chad Billingsley (LAD – SP)
    10. Gordon Beckham (CWS – 3B)
    11. Ian Stewart (Col – 2B,3B)
    12. Brian Wilson (SF – RP)
    13. Alexei Ramírez (CWS – SS)
    14. David Price (TB – SP)
    15. Jorge De La Rosa (Col – SP)
    16. Clay Buchholz (Bos – SP)
    17. Joba Chamberlain (NYY – SP)
    18. Ervin Santana (LAA – SP)
    19. Garrett Jones (Pit – 1B,OF)
    20. Bobby Jenks (CWS – RP)
    21. Ryan Franklin (StL – RP)
    22. Octavio Dotel (Pit – RP)
    23. Chris Iannetta (Col – C)

    I know C-Bills as my best pitcher isn’t inspiring but will a staff like this get me through if I hit the wire hard (which I usually do due [i said due-do] to razzball) and load up on hitting earlier…i feel like this will be my strategy – hitting til the 8-9th round throw in a pitch or two and then Gordy/Stewie combo, then a bunch of starters followed by donkey-corns…am I on track? oh yeah and Reyes in the fifth? are others seeing him fall that much?

  35. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @John: Depends on the rest of the staff, but in a vacuum Floyd.

    @Bob: Drop Scott for Johnson.

    @Matt B: I’d want Jones. I’d move Anderson behind Slowey, then the way you listed them.

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: My bad. Vernon Wells? Former or latter?

    @danimal35: You’d have to stream pretty hardcore with that staff. If you’re willing to do it, it could work for you. Reyes in the 5th is nice value. Nice catcher at the end. Solid hitting, obviously.

  36. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

    @Grey: OMG latter.*

    *We’re not talking Razzball, right?

    **I drafted Wells last year. NEVER AGAIN.

  37. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

    @majortommy: Also drafted Alexei last year. That was more my fault than his, though. I’m kind of sniffing around him again, feeling he might be so undervalued he’s worth it. But probably not.

    The ultimate IRDTOTG, though, is A-Rod. Honestly, I’m not sure what I’d do at, say, Round 1, pick 6 or 7 (let alone later), if he was still available.

    Probably draft him, set the rest of the draft to autodraft, then go walk into a river with rocks in my pockets.

  38. I'm Keith Hernandez says:
    (link)

    Quick question, when drafting in an OBP league, who else besides Uggla and Dunn would jump a couple of round in drafting?

  39. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: HAHAHAHAHA! As a Yankee fan I can’t fully agree with your sentiment, but I can relate. My nightmare is that one of my young keepers gets traded to the Sux, and I have to get whatever I can for him so I never have to root for a Sawx player.

  40. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    does anyone agree with me that you will also need some luck when it comes to streaming since you will hurt your era and whip and also agree with me that streaming players don’t always mean wins -they are on the free agent market for a reason and one of the reasons is that they don’t get enough wins to be owned by anyone is this league
    and if you think you are going to find a player that will give you 10K’s your are dreaming

    @mrbaseball: Streaming really only works in H2H. And even there it’s risky… Only works because you can punt two categories for a week at a time and have it reset on Monday. In roto, you’re best to have patience unless things have turned really poor or there’s better options on waivers.

    the best guys on the rankings are tulo, but aparently hes being overvalued. I dont want kinsler/lincecum/mauer for the reasons mentioned on this site and sizemore is a little bit of a risk for early 2nd rd.

    Ideally Id like to land a 3B or kemp/holliday at #15, but if i dont get them id be inclined to take J-upside….who would you take and why? Thanks again

  47. Grey

    1. Prince Fielder (Mil – 1B)
    2. David Wright (NYM – 3B)
    3. Jayson Werth (Phi – OF)
    4. Brian McCann (Atl – C)

    21. Kevin Gregg (Tor – RP)
    22. Clay Buchholz (Bos – SP)

    @Grey: OK, you’ve really got my attention now (I’m always looking to put a different slant on the ol’ H2H). Assuming you take Mauer 10 at the earliest, who’d you look to pair him with?

    Perhaps assuming (as Pat did) that Pujols, ARod, Hanley, Braun, Utley, Kemp, Miggy, Teix and Prince are all gone.

    I’m very prejudiced against Astros, though, for no good reason. Ugly unis, boring team. Can’t see myself owning Berkman, ever. Which isn’t a risk because a guy in my league only drafts Fat White Dudes, ever. Berkman, Dunn, Lackey, like clockwork.

    @majortommy: Gordon is on my No-Draft List for Life.

    @Grey: Sorry, I’m a plonker – and I know this is all to hypothetical for you to give any definitive answers, but we’re 14 teams – does that change things?

    Also, by saying Holliday, you’re in essence saying cover a deep position if you go with Mauer?

  60. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Steve: Well, you’re also taking all of the top guys off the board, right? I’d take Howard if he were there. Was he an option? Ha, I’m plonkering you right back, innit? Notice the accent?

    @Grey: Thanks for triggering the my relapse, incest is always more funny when your on the outside looking in@Baron Von Vulturewins: This is the year he lives up to the hype! Also expect a huge year from Brien Taylor and Todd Van Poppel!

  62. Steve says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Yeah – very smoove, guv.

    I’d be sticking to the rankings aside from Mauer. So, now we’ve got that out of the way, I finally think I’ve figured out my questions:

    1. Is 10 where you’d rank Mauer in a 14-team OBP league? If not, where?

    2. What type of player would you pair him with? From your responses, I’m feeling a more power-oriented guy rather than a balanced type lilke Grady? I mean, Ellsbury could be next on the list, but I don’t think I want him with Mauer.

    Know wot I mean?

  63. JoeC says:
    (link)

    Hmmm… well, what does it say about my mad skillz that I drafted 2 of those guys (Carlos Gomez and Austin Jackson) in a non-Razzball league (meaning a league where you’re trying to draft the BEST performing players, not the worst)?

    In my defense, I’m forthwith dropping Gomez because I’m an idiot and drafted Erik Bedard, not realizing he’s out until June (dorf!).

  64. Bring Back Pluto says:
    (link)

    I inherited a keeper team in a12 team H2H league with sorta strange cats: 8×8 (standard 5×5 + H, BB, K on offense, and L, HLD, and IP on pitching).

    I have Kemp, Teixeira, Rollins, Carpenter, and Billingsley (not a great 5, I know, but that’s what happens when you inherit.)

    Anyway, my strategy was to accept my 2 decent enough SPs and use the first 6 picks of the draft to fill out my offense.

    Turns out I get first pick (this also happens a lot when you inherit a team)

    Top offense choices appear to be Zimmerman, Wieters, and Markakis. I think Zimmerman is the easy choice here?

    But the problem is Greinke is available as well, tempting me away from me strategy of ignore pitching at the top.

    So, who do I take?

  65. majortommy says:
    (link)

    @Bring Back Pluto: You have 2 first rounders and a 2/3rd rounder in Rollins. Looks good to me. I would personally take Zimmerman, then go get a cold one and have a smoke while you wait the 40 minutes til your pick swings around again and start with pitching then. Greinke is obviously an Ace but you have 2 decent pitchers(although beware of Carpenter this year) but the drop off after your pick and the 20 something picks til you are up again is going to be dramatic as far as hitting goes.

    @Grey: Hi Grey, top’o’the afternoon to you. I recently drafted in my competitive keeper league (which you advised me on earlier in the forums) and was wondering what your impression is of my results. Bear in mind it was a keeper league so some of the picks/rounds may look wonky (12 teams, 5×5 with everyone keeping 7 players from 2009):

    C. Chris Iannetta (24)
    1B. Mark Teixeira (2) (K)
    2B. Rickie Weeks (7)
    SS. Troy Tulowitzki (5) (K)
    3B. Ian Stewart (8)
    MI. Alcides Escobar (18)
    CI. Carlos Pena (10)
    OF. Ryan Braun (1) (K)
    OF. Curtis Granderson (3)
    OF. Manny Ramirez (6)
    OF. Nelson Cruz (9) (K)
    OF. Adam Lind (14) (K)
    UTIL. Colby Rasmus (23)

    SP. Dan Haren (4) (K)
    SP. Clayton Kershaw (13) (K)
    SP. Ervin Santana (15)
    SP. Jonathan Sanchez (16)
    SP. Carlos Zambrano (17)
    SP. David Price (20)
    SP. Mat Latos (22)
    RP. Huston Street (11)
    RP. Chad Qualls (12)
    RP. Matt Capps (19)
    RP. Brandon Lyon (21)

    I’m concerned about my AVG… should I do anything about it? Do you think I stack up o.k in steals… I think my SP will turn out fine, what do you think about my balance of 1-5 SP? Cheers as always for all the help and advice!

    @majortommy: Ha!

    @Steve: 10 sounds about right. No Ellsbury or Crawford with him. You need power, that’s the issue with him, innit?

    @JoeC: Like I said above, steals aren’t counted, so you’re not a total dorf.

    @Bring Back Pluto: Agree with Major Tommy. Zimmerman is the easy choice.

    @TheQuestforMerlin: Good afternoon to you too. I think your pitching’s totally fine. Your average is okay, not great, but don’t worry about it. You’re light on speed but power looks good and your team looks solid overall.

  68. Steve says:

    @Grey: Perfect. Thanks for your forebearance. That was an annoying series of questions.

  69. TheQuestforMerlin says:

    @Grey: Awesome stuff. I’ll stop worrying (a little bit) about my AVG, and focus on picking up some steals from waivers. Brett Gardner vs Carlos Gomez, who do you think will be better this year?

    I don’t like it when my hitting is based around the offense of one or two teams. In my case, Rockies (Tulo, Stewart and Iannetta) and Brewers (Braun, Escobar, Weeks). Weird how it turns out like that.

    Ok grey, my 12 team 5×5 h2h weekly (1 win) keeper question….
    Bats: (C?)/Votto/Utley/Reyes/A-Rod/Util-Reynolds/Adam Jones/Heyward/(OF3?)
    Pitchers: Greinke/(SP2-SP4?)/(RP1-2?)

    For my 9th Beckham is available and seems too sexy at 2b/3b (on bench for injury backup, trade bait, too good of value to pass up)

    I’m way behind everyone on SP (most have 3) and best available is: S Baker, K Slowey, B Anderson, F Liriano, M Scherzer, R Oswalt, B Webb, G Floyd, J Shields

    Play it safe and go with Baker or Anderson…Or go with Beckham at #105 in a keeper and there will be pitchers later…(maybe)

    @Grey: FYI:

    There is no truth to the Buster Olney vile rumor vitriol about the Pujols for Howard trade. Heard it straight from Mo’s mouth. He said, “there is no truth to the Buster Olney vile rumor vitriol about …………………”

    Something like that……………

    Hey guys, kinda in a pickle here. We’ve had two guys BAIL in my 12 team H2H league. Its a daily transactions, yahoo, 10×10…. I can give more info if you want it. Email me at youngy_03@yahoo.com if you’re interested.

    Its a $100 buy in as well. ALL MONEY IS PAID OUT. So much to first place of the regular season, so much to second in the tourney and so much to first place overall champion.

    Its a league thats been running 9 years now? Very competitive, and I have inviting razzballers in, but…. ya gotta do what ya gotta do…. email me and I’ll get back to you probably tomorrow.

    thanks,

    TONY

    (oh and I’m an organizer for an RCL league, high school art teacher (trust factor) and a frequent poster, I would do nothing of the sort to get my rep dirty’d on this site.)

    Hey Grey, I recently drafted in a 14 man H2H and this is what I ended up with:
    C-Iannetta
    1b-Pujols
    2b- Weeks
    SS-Drew
    3b-Panda Man
    OF-Werth, Lind, Pence
    UTL: Quentin, Beckham
    BN: Damon, Beltre

    SP’s:Lester, Hamels, Burnette, Sanchez, Cueto
    RP’s: Aardsma, Madson
    BN: Ervin Santana, Hudson

    I originally drafted Scott Sizemore at 2b and Garrett Jones, but Weeks and Beltre were dropped and I thought they were better options. I am waiting until Beckham gains his 2b ability to do something with Weeks. Thanks for the help.

    Oh and I didn’t know Rudy played in the MLB…

    @Cuban Rafters: 14 teamer? thats a pretty nice team… your team batting average is suspect and you dont really have any RPs for saves, but sagnof…. nice team.

    @BigFatHippo: Yeah, heard that. Makes no sense.

    @Cuban Rafters: Crazy those guys were dropped… Who’s in this league? You better win it. Nice team… Staff — Looks great — You did well to balance your WHIP and ERA. Hitting’s fine, obviously Weeks and Drew are wild cards, but you have an exit strategy with Weeks anyway. Hopefully he makes it two weeks in.

    @mrbaseball: Holy Sheets, indeed.

    @mrbaseball: @Grey: “I know people have had bad springs but this is taking it to a whole new level,” Sheets said.

    6×5 (+OPS), ten team, keeper. Which side do you favor?

    Fielder and Granderson for Gonzalez and Kemp

    @Sammy the Bull: Fielder side, but they’re both even and it seems like an unnecessary trade.

    @Grey: Same league: would you trade Sandoval (leaving me without a 3b) for A.Gonz (putting him at Util.)?

    Here’s my predicament as I prepare for my draft in a keeper league. I’m keeping Hanley with my first round pick and I have J. Upside later. There have been 36 players kept (obviously some overall talent types and some value picks) and my first pick at the earliest can be 8th. Assuming I pick somewhere in the middle of the second round round, how important is it that I take Zimmerman who is essentially the only decent 3b left. (Longoria, A-Rod, Reynolds, Sandoval, Beckham – all kept). I was thinking my other choice would be who ever is left of Mourneau, Votto, Gonzalez. I think I have a bit more faith in the counting stats of the first basemen than Zimm.

    @Reddish Orange: I’d take a first baseman first, then Zimm if the others are already taken.
