Much has changed since last we met to hash out the snapshot of prospect tower.
Today’s the day we’re on our way to Mortal Kombat, Dynasty Edition.
It’s more than a game of either or in a lot of ways but not more ways than it’s not.
You’ll skip all this if I risk any more sentences here, I fear, unless you’ve skipped it already, which is honestly fine by me. You’re gone by now, so I might as well say the work is in the spreadsheet. And perhaps in the comments section once we get rolling. Hours upon hours of happy hustle.

I’m @theprospectitch on Twitter.Thanks for reading!
I notice kelenic is a lot lower than he used to be (widely considered a top 2 or 3 prospect before his first callup) I’ll be honest of course he should be lower than that due to his horrible flop, but he got called up again and hes a bit better lately, you know who wasnt re called up and isnt better lately? Vidal brujan! How come brujan is so high? Jarren duran too, duran and brujan are crushing kelenic according to this list and brujan was batting well under .100 and got sent down, duran was good but got cooled down and seems to strike out a lot (average well under 200)
1. if you were to update this list as of their performances right now, would you move any of these 3 around? And out of kelenic and duran who would be better to roster (solely based on offensive production in the remainder of the second half this year)
2. Bobby witt jr. Promoted to triple A, do you think he could be promoted to mlb anytime soon (or this year at all for that matter?)
1. this was posted 5 days after his list came out, what chance you think you think he’s changing stuff in that 5 days simply since he found out you are aware of “brujan’s hitting .100” (in less than 30 at bats, barely allowed to start) and “duran seems to strike out a lot”. he was aware of duran’s K numbers and that brujan in less than 30 at bats hit .100 so far before he made this post.
2. next year
sorry, “what chance you think he’ll change stuff” bad typing there
Soler or Toro ROS? Is Soler going to be more productive in the Atlanta lineup? Toro looks good but can he keep it up?
Is Detmers a grab and see? How do you feel he is going to do? And is he going to stick in the rotation ROS?
How do you feel about Luis Robert moving forward? Think he will be a top 10-20 fantasy player within the next couple years?
months back he liked arozarena more. this much is certain. doesn’t help much here without knowing where he’d slot arozarena for possible up to 2 years rankings of course. my guess is he’s at least a bit lower than that, possibly much more.
Emailed Rudy asking when a post draft updated prospect list would come out and here it is. Amazing stuff. I’m in a bind and have my 3 Rd minor league draft coming up Monday. I pick 2nd. Loaded with hitters in my system (Abrams, Tork, Carroll, Matos, H Perez, Cruz, G Jimenez, Marsh and then guys off the list like H Ramos and E Pena. Had Kopech and Skubal but they were promoted this year. Do I dump Ramos or Pena and draft one of the young hitters from draft (Henderson or Watson) or just go with either Lieter or Rocker? Was surprised not to see Frelick on list. Ty so much for what you do. Best prospect site in business.
In 30 team dynasty, I trade Jose Barrero for Francisco Alvarez. Looks good based on your list. Go ahead and pull the trigger?
yeppers.
Yeah I think that’s a good swap.
Hey hey – what are your thoughts on Wander vs Witt for next season only? Is there a clear difference between them? Seems like wander likely has secure ABs whereas I don’t really know for Witt. Any thoughts on them for next season would be greatly appreciated!
Man I hadn’t thought about this one but it’s closer than I would’ve guessed. I’ll still take Wander.
Why the 2025 ETA for Veen? Is he that far behind other 19 yo like Marte, Orelvis and matos?
Just a goofy bet against the Rockies. Tough to go broke betting on them to be weird.
same 16 teamer with tons of extra stats dynasty (OPS, total bases, hits, steals %, OBP over AVG) where i traded groshans + t.freeman for heriberto + 2 different 2022 2nd rounders (now with 4 picks in the first 32 next year), partially just for value but also to clear space (more of that needed later with those picks). now have these in stash slots:
r.castro, d.jefferies, d.espino, b.miller (LAD), hedbert, heriberto, w.diaz, j.walker, k-rob, n.marte, c.terry.
i see castro should be around howell (mid 60’s) from comment. these are available, being somewhat loath to have 2/11ths catchers though: soderstrom, cartaya, volpe, peguero (we’re not open universe so these just drafted in real life guys are 1st obtainable in our next year’s draft, unless called up first, in which case they’d go to waivers first). any moves here?
this is main roster outside of stashed guys:
C torrens
1B mancini (LF/RF)
2B semien (SS)
SS jp craw
3B jose ram
MI mcmahon (1B-3B)
CI chapman (3B)
LF meadows (RF)
CF amed rosario (SS)
RF arozarena (LF)
OF jd mart (LF/RF)
OF aquino
util larnach (LF/RF), odor (2B, just added)
BN: t.taylor (all OF, just added)
DL: mookie, daz cameron, kirilloff, gomes, e.white
SP: pineda, watkins (likely streamer, we got 1750 max innings here), mize, wood, morton, mahle, sandoval
RP: t.rogers (MIN), treinen (holds/saves sold separately, and K/9, K/BB), pomeranz, reyes, lugo
DL: verlander, yates, carrasco, e.hernandez
and paddack too.
ok, from that:
– 2nd game in last 3 times started gets 2 HR’s in 2 at bats
– 5 HR’s in 23 at bats
– only hits he’s gotten are HR’s
getting more loath to drop obv
Man that’s a rich waiver pool!
Maybe drop Terry for Soderstrom?
Jose Miranda randomly playing 1B today for STP. One of my key indicators for callups is sudden position changes.
I keep trying to find an offensive comp – maybe Andujar + walks?
Hey Itch,
Just wondered, what do you make of Brujan’s first taste of the Big Leagues? Obviously he was overmatched, which is true for most prospects. But was there anything at all that stood out that concerns you or gives you confidence? I don’t know if he’s really as good as some of the hype on him suggests.
Also, I see you’ve dropped Kelenic to #20. I always wondered why he bolted up so many prospect rankings so quickly. His leap up the rankings came like the week after the Mariners traded Edwin Diaz for him. I’ve always wondered if this had something to do with his rank because Diaz was so highly thought of at the time. Truth is, he hasn’t really had that much time to develop in the minors. Go look at his seasons as a whole. Not much time at any level and the 2020 pandemic year sure didn’t help. I just wonder if he’s one of these guys that might be totally in over his head for the rankings he’s received. You seem to be subscribing to this opinion to, but I’m not sure you’ve fully committed to it.
Also, Hedbert is now in Rookie ball and showing some elite skills. Is he a future #1 prospect?
Anyway, curious what you think about both these guys now. Thanks.
Hi, Harley,
Couldn’t agree more on Kelenic, and I think you’re right it’s directly connected to Mets’ loss trade hype. Also pandemic shutdown era marketing brilliance my Mariners Twitter and Kelenic himself. I said early this year that I doubt he’d be anyone’s number one prospect if 2020 had been a typical year. Kind of a foolish hypothetical thing to say, but I still stand by it as an encapsulation of my take on the whole scenario. That AA line was fine, but that’s it. Fine. I kind of went off on the Reddit thread today about the swing and miss he showed then that everyone ignored.
https://www.reddit.com/r/fantasybaseball/comments/orbxwo/top_100_prospects_for_2021_fantasy_baseball/
Totally agree on Hedbert. Hit one over the batter’s eye the other day. Will have to minimize Ks and swipe bags to become #1, but it’s only a handful of guys who could get there, and he’s one of em.
Great stuff on that thread. Thanks for sharing. Appreciate the insight.
I hope Kelenic figures it out but he may need significant time before that happens. Lastly, I’m looking forward to the rise of Hedbert!!!
Awesome, Itch. Thank you.
Peguero over Volpe? Same age. Same position. Same league. One is doing everything right, one is getting dropped in the order. I’m curious about your thoughts.
Thanks!
And throw Jones in there, too. He’s three years older in the same league. Volpe looks like the best one to me (but what do I know).
Jones got toggled around so much for this reason. Decided not to ding him much for age bc of the path he’s traveled to get here and bc I think he’s effectively graduated A+. Then again Tampa going slow w him is a legit issue for our game.
I do think I need to revisit Volpe v Peguero. Some legacy ranking and aesthetic stuff mixed in there I need to sort out. Peguero looks incredibly good on the eye test, and I simply haven’t seen as much Volpe.
Itch: Thoughts on a few trade offers I received.
10 team dynasty: 31 man roster with additional 10 minor spots:
6×6 with OBP
Im out of the money…..
Id get K Bryant/B Marsh for Springer. ( I get younger, but is it worth it?)
Id get India/F Reyes for W Merrifield (Id offer this, not sure if he would counter, but looking for thoughts on deal…. I would get younger but lose steals)
Thanks
i’d move whit for those depending on who’d be dropped. i don’t know on the first, as it appears bryant’s healthy for the first time in like 4 or so years. the issue is, was he ever healthy before this? if so his next year stats might be pretty bad after he gets paid, the only trope more true than the “he’ll play good in contract year” is “guy gets paid then sucks” (the 2nd is more statistically true, research for that supplied by shandler’s yearly tome (albeit it wasn’t a large data set, and for some reason it hasn’t been done all that lately)). kinda hard to just assume a guy suddenly gets healthy just in time for payday contract. looks a lot more like a dude who just doesn’t give a shit often enough (or who’s shoulder never got fixed till lately). obv if he’s hitting at least as well as this year next year i’ll just be wrong in this case, it’s possible somebody does in fact get healthy (after 4 years of not being) just in time for playing for contract. before vladito’s minor league asendance bryant was the “generational hitter” from that 10ish year group of hitters. and he looked like it for the first few years too. then took off prime career years not getting his shoulder fixed, then did that but still appeared injured for another 2ish years after.
Im not high on Brynat…. was wondering if Marsh made up the difference.
The other trade makes more sense: Two solid young bats! Id prob drop a RP(holds), so that wouldn’t matter!
that’s the thing, if he’s finally healthy i’d rather have bryant than springer in dynasty, but i’m also betting we don’t get to know/see that till next year. if he’s BEEN healthy part of these 4 years and been this bad till this year clearly i’m low on him too. the amount of DL slots could be a thing here too with springer. i doubt that stuff gets better at his age.
How about Freeman or Olsen for Max Scherzer and Springer. I could use Whit somewhere too.
I get Olsen for Max/Springer? Think Im giving too much….. The other managers value age. Would I be better off just keeping Whit Max and Springer for next season?
Thanks guys
wondering if you could get a bit more on the freeman/olson for scherzer + springer, as i like getting either of those.
How about George Kirby or Biggio
kirby + one of freeman/olson for scherzer + springer, yep, me likey. see what itch thinks but i’m doing that.
Yeah I’d do that.
I like the Springer for Bryant-plus situation more than I like dealing Whit.
i thought preciado was part (the only even worthwhile part i thought) of the darvish to SD deal, so now on CUBS
Good lookin out on that! Thanks!
and i figured r.castro would be here somewhere from lately comments.
Well that’s depressing/irritating.
Could’ve sworn he was in the Howell range.
I moved Jordan Lawler very late out of signing fears, moved Watson around late for the same reason, and my only guess is he got wrapped up in that.
Itch awesome list, thanks for all the hard work!
Thanks, Steamin Beamen! Much appreciated!
Vashon or Haase in a keeper?
*Varsho
Wow this is a tough one. I guess I’ll take Varsho.
Where would Jo Adell be on this list?
Right next to Kelenic, I think.
Any hope that that Varsho is turning a corner?
Thanks!
Yes, very encouraging stuff from him now that he’s just in the lineup and seeing himself as a fixture in the league. This is a nice buy window, I think.
Yes you talked out of dropping him a few week back after he had such a slow start. Dbacks have nothing left to play for but the future.
Holà !
What are your thoughts on Nate Pearson? Still believe in him as a top starter? Wondering if it makes sense to trade him and Dylan Cease for Grisham in a deep league.
Gracias!
¡Holà!
I’m kind of out on Pearson as a fantasy starter for the time being. Command is absolutely essential in the AL Beast, and he’s more about area code accuracy w brute force than anything.
I would swap those arms for Grisham.
Are you worried about O’Neil Cruz’s forearm?
Not really. Here’s a solid link.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mlb.com/amp/news/oneil-cruz-roansy-contreras-injury-updates.html
Jake Crouse is great on Pirates stuff.
Hey Itch,
Appreciate your work on prospects and the sharing of your thought process for evaluating players.
I know in the comments above, you mention Olivares just missed the top 100.
How far off was Andres Giménez? General thoughts on him?
In a 15 team AL only, would you deal Nick Pivetta (SP 4 behind a Lynn, Manaea and Kikuchi) for either Olivares or Giménez?
Thanks, ivthoughts!
Gimenez wasn’t eligible, so I didn’t think about him, but I’ve never been a big believer.
That goes for Pivetta though, too, who I would be happy to swap for Olivares.
Duh… wasn’t thinking this morning.
Appreciate the advice!
Thanks for the update, these are always very useful.
A couple of questions-
20 team H2H keeper league using both AVE and OBP. Looking for some help ROS with potential for the future. Estevan Florial is available. Any further thoughts now that he has been up for a bit? Who do you like between him and Hillard, Kole Calhoun, and Raphael Ortega?
We also get to carry 3 NA. I currently have Baz, Josh Jung, and Josh Lowe. Would you drop any of them for Oneil Cruz or Taylor Ward?
Thanks in advance!
Thanks, Screwballs!
I’d probably snag Florial. Lotta name value there. Starting off hot. Could be a while before he stops seeing pitches he can hit.
I would drop Lowe for Cruz, but I wonder if you could trade Lowe instead. He’s got some backers.
Thanks again. I should be able to trade Lowe; hadn’t thought about that.
First I’ve heard of Francisco Alvarez. Why do you have him over Moreno?
Moreno is hurt right now, which isn’t the entire reason but is a sizable factor.
Alvarez is struggling for the first time this month as one of the youngest guys in High A, which gave me pause and dropped him a skosh down the list. Perhaps he should’ve dropped further, but he’s only ever taken great at bats before now, so I figured I’d give him until the next list to course correct.
A healthy Moreno would almost certainly have passed him.
Thanks!
Preciate the post!! Always look forward to your input.
where do you stand on dudes like: Hedbert, Andy Pages, Yoelkis, and Luis Medina??
Thanks!!
I mean, I see Hedbert’s ranking…just mean, what do you project??
also, sorry, referring to Medina the young Brewers OFer.
Actually kinda figured that was the funky Medina in question here, given the context.
Hedbert has huge power for a young kid. 30+ HR guy with speed.
Pages I just doubt the contact skills will allow the power to play at the highest level. Hitting .219 with 2 HR in July dinged him a bit here, thanks partly to confirmation bias on that contact issue.
Nothing much to say on Medina, who’s getting worked over in the Arizona Complex League. Swing looks okay but pitch recognition and hand-eye are lacking at the moment, but it’s just a couple weeks.
Yoelqui has never really appealed to me. Just doubtful the swing works against high end velo or spin as it’s presently constructed.
Love love love this list. Thanks so much for the work. So helpful! Feeling pretty good about acquiring Pratto in a 14 team dynasty for Alex Wood. Looking forward to him coming up.
Couple questions for you.
Bailey Ober. I know you liked him coming up as a sneaky guy who could have some modest success in MLB. I’m holding him in my minors in the same league I mentioned above. What have you seen so far? Worth a hold? I like his unique skill set and I feel like things could click and he could be a solid 4/5/6 SP, but I could use the minors slot for something else too. Would love to get your thoughts.
Also, in a different dynasty league, Tyler Megill worth a pick up? Surprised he is still out there. Drop would either be Yarbrough or Amir Garrett. I have Garrett, Hembree and Sims so I’ve been holding all three. It’s a weekly line up league though so I can’t really start more than one of them.
Thanks in advance. Really appreciate the work you put into these posts!
Thanks for the kind words, molina bros bbq!
Ober is more interesting to me than a lot of bigger names because Minnesota is already giving him a chance, and he’s a unique enough look with good enough command that I think he will improve across time.
I would drop Garrett for Megill. Committee closer seems to be Amir’s peak outcome, and the Mets just get results from their arms.
Looks like you are lower than most on Garrett Mitchell, thoughts on him long term? Where do you see him rank next year
Yeah I’ll be the low mark on this one throughout his time, it seems, but more because other people at big sites were more impressed with his High A showing as a major college 22-year-old than I was. Nothing against him really. He’s almost 23. If he’s good in AA, he’ll climb. So far it’s just slap and dash there, but it’s only two weeks.
Love the update! I’ve got quite a few of your top guys in my dynasty rebuild.
One of the teams in my league is aggressively going after my Burnes. Given my lineup, would you consider this offer? 10 team h2h with HR, TB, BB, OBP, SLG, SB for hitters and ERA, WHIP, K, BB/9, QS and Saves.
Give Burnes
Get Winker, Framber, Orelvis and Pratto
C: Perez
1b: Cron
2b: Gurriel jr (of only next year)
3b: Devers
SS: Bogaerts
CI: Bohm
MI: Franco
Of: Franmil (util only next year)
Of: d. Smith
Of: Blackmon
Of: renfroe
Ut: Rodgers
IL: Santander, belt, fraley
NA: Brujan, Abrams, Carroll, rutschman, Matos, marte, Cruz, Peraza,
SP: Burnes, Lopez, Rogers, S. Gray, Mize, L. Garcia, Marquez, Ynoa, Lamet.
NA: Grayson, Greene, DL Hall, Priester
Could my pitching handle losing Burnes? My outfield is weak so I like getting winker, but idk if I want to move my only ace.
Thanks for all you do! My prospects have really improved because of your lists.
Thanks for the kind words, Jr!
I would do that trade. Framber isn’t so far from Burnes that it makes up for all that value. Kind of wild to get Orelvis as a throw in piece at the moment.
Thanks Itch! Would it change anything if I was completely out of the playoff race for this year? Or is it good long term?
I think it’s even better if you’re out for 2021.
Hi Itch!
Missing guys like Olivares(at your previous 100, and still mashing at AAA), MJ Melendez(2nd Overall Milb HRs ), Samad Taylor, P Battenfield…
And intrigued why Arteaga jumps to 80s…
Thanks!
Olivares was literally the last man off the list. Probably belongs there on merit, but trade value is kind of a tie breaker piece for me, and I think he loses out a little there. I still want him if I can get him.
Arteaga looks loud to me in the few glimpses I’ve had, and he’s the type of checks-many-boxes guy who just blasts into the consensus top 50 with another solid month.
Melendez a C penalty and a swing a miss penalty , tho he’s come a long long way on that. Also a Salvy is timeless penalty for me.
Battenfield just missed, partly again due to a logjam. Joe Ryan dealt with this a bit previous to this list.
Jackson Kowar had a rough debut. I see his is no longer in the top 100. Did you see enough of him to tarnish your outlook or do you still see him a someone who could be fantasy relevant within the next two years? Thx
Could be relevant. Still a nice place to pitch, but he’s trending toward a back-end relief role.
How concerned should we be with Corbin Carroll’s injury? I have to decide between him, Noevil Marte and Austin Martin. Leaning toward Carroll (my league uses on base), but the injury scares me.
Thanks!
JK
He’s so elite athletically that I’m less concerned than I would be about, say, a corner only bat. I do think he’s the call among those three, but man I’d love to get Marte as well
Is Austin Martin so low due to his current power outage? Onbase seems solid if not spectacular! Just curious about your thoughts on him.
Thanks
JK
Yeah, precisely that. Better in real baseball than fantasy.
Thanks for this Itch! Curious why Austin Martin is so low in your rankings? Goes counter to many other dynasty lists I’ve seen.
Thanks, jbona3!
He just doesn’t impact the baseball enough. If he adds power, he’ll be very interesting, but until then I’m pretty meh on a guy with 2 homers and 7 steals in half a season, which is a continuation of the sort of player he’s always been. Great plate skills. Gonna be a big leaguer. Just nothing that moves the needle for us at the moment.
Awesome list, Itch!
I see you have Gilberto Jimenez pretty high still, which is encouraging. Do you have any concerns about his walk and strikeout numbers or lack of power so far?
Thanks!
Posted in the wrong place. Ugh. My bad
Itch! Awesome write up as always.
I recently acquired Witt and J-Rod so the future is bright. I have a good team and currently in first but lost Acuna.
I have Duran and wondering how good you think he can be? Should I hold tight or trade for some OF depth for this years run? If you think he can be a top 50 guy I have the depth to hold otherwise there is interest in him from some of the rebuilding teams in my league.
Thanks!
LG
Thanks, LG!
I’d hold Duran. Rare power for his kind of speed.
What kind of dynasty asset do you see Jonathan India as at this point? Do you think he is someone who can be a top 50 or top 100 overall hitter? In short, do you believe in the gains he’s made this year?
I’m rebuilding and wondering if he’s a guy you’d target
Thanks!
Yeah he’s been crazy hot for a long time now. Certainly a top 100 type in OBP leagues. I’m skeptical he’ll have enough category juice to carry a standard roto team that way, but on the other hand he’s adding power and I think he’ll keep doing so with time in that park.
I wouldn’t mind getting him in a rebuild if the price is right. It’s unlikely he’d be a primary target for me in a standard 5×5 rebuild, but that’s a result of my style of play as much as anything. I tend to pay less for high upside guys in the middle minors on the front end of a rebuild, using the FA pool to supplement the big squad panning for gold, hoping to hit on a couple guys like India. I feel like you’d be paying a premium for India right now given what he’s putting on the page, and that’s not the worst outcome, but I would try to buy off the clearance rack if possible.
Drew Waters off the list due to the swing and miss issues? Oswald Peraza is available. Looks like you’d drop Waters for Peraza.
I would if I couldn’t trade Waters, I think, but he’s really hot right now. I would shop him a little first. I suspect Peraza will still be out there a couple weeks from now because his big hype moment has kind of come and gone.
Great list! You must be feeling strong about Pedro Leon’s bat to move him up on your list? Noticed that Erick Pena from KC dropped off completely?
Leon bring just a phone call away helps a lot. Houston has to find room for some of those guys (Meyers, Siri, De La Cruz) at some point, but there’s still a chance Leon can play shortstop, which gives him an inside lane.
Peña just a case of needing to find room for new guys and him not doing anything loud yet as a pro.
Great stuff…wow! Did I miss Keibert Ruiz…? What are your thoughts on him? Thank you
Thanks!
He’s definitely a top 100 talent, but I did drop him just off the list because he’ll need a trade or a rule change or I guess maybe an injury to be fantasy relevant, I think. Tough situation for him.
Where is Keibert Ruiz?
Just outside the 100. Got bumped a couple times to make room. That last group of ten tends to have a lot of late movement, and I just kept coming up empty on seeing a path to value for him. Talent alone certainly lands him inside the top 100, but I have a hard time seeing anyone making a substantial trade to get him in a dynasty league today given the dominoes that have to fall for him to matter to our game.
Thanks for responding. I just think that the bat will be too hard to ignore for much longer, whether he plays for the Dodgers (looks unlikely) or someone else (looks likely).
I hope so. I don’t really get why he’s in the minors right now. Will Smith could play 1B, I think, tho I suppose Pujols has been functional, and they really want Bellinger to play through whatever is going on in his shoulder, head, etc.
I suppose if he came up and struggled, he’d be harder to trade, but they hate trading these guys anyway, so shrug emojis all around.
