FanDuel: Newcomb Duking The O’s

Happy Friday Razzballers and welcome to FanDuel Friday. It’s looking like we could have some potential rain issues on this full slate, but we’ll do our best to monitor and adjust closer to lineup lock. If the rain holds off in Hotlanta tonight I’m all over Sean Newcomb ($8,900) as my top pitching play. First of all, the O’s are in an NL park, which means Alex Cobb will have a bat in his hands. Secondly, the O’s have been dreadful. They have the third worst team OPS and are 11th in team strikeouts. As long as Newcomb can be efficient with his pitches, he should have no trouble mowing down O’s. The 9+ k-rate is juicy and the 3.23 FIP shows that the 2.70 ERA isn’t that fluky. Oh, and just for good measure, Alex Cobb and his 7.14 ERA are in town, so the Braves bats should have a field day. Now, let’s hope Mother Nature cooperates with our money-making plans.

Gleyber Day Weekend

Gleyber Torres was called up by the Yankees and here’s what I said this offseason, “My love for Gleyber is admittedly less coalesced into an actual thing than you’re gonna find from just about any Yankees fan. “Ya godda be fahkin jokin wit me right here, kid. Gleyber Torres is gonna be the greatest of all-time, son. All. Time. I wanna coalesce my fist into ya fahkin head with your sissy-boy words. Why don’t ya use a word like fuhgeddaboudit? Before you answer, I need to go with my mom to have her mustache waxed.” That’s your run-of-the-mill Yankees fan. See, Gleyber is already being fitted for Monument Park in Yankee Stadium before he even plays a game.” And that’s me quoting me! In fantasy, he looks more like, Gley… *pinkie to mouth* bore! He is a borderline top ten MLB prospect. That’s the Gleyberline, even. He was in Prospect Ralph’s top 100 fantasy baseball prospects. The problem (it’s not much of a problem), he’s a hit tool guy first. What does that mean? He’s going to hit for average first. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, but for fantasy when a guy is called up and he’s a 40+ steal or homer guy, they might have a bigger immediate impact, immaterial? Immeasurable to immortality or immune–Okay, now I’m just IM’ing. I would own him in any league, no matter how shallow. There’s a chance you can do better in shallower leagues. His outcome this year is anywhere from Orlando Arcia to Alex Bregman. Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

2019 Colorado Rockies Minor League Preview

In the words of Frank Lucas, “Rockies hitters are a brand name; as much a brand name as Pepsi. I own it. I stand behind it. I guarantee it, and people know that even if they don’t know me.” So the story goes for Rockies prospects reports, all the kids want to know about all the potential future Rockie bats, and are quick to raspberry a talented arm before his future Coors date. With this in mind, I try and focus on some of the more unheralded hitting talent amongst the Purple’s ranks. There is loads of infield depth in this system, with a fair share of mid-rotation arms, and some speedy outfielders to boot. It’s not the Rockies farms of the past few offseasons, but it’s a talented group nevertheless. The Rocks have done an excellent job of developing talent, and cashing in at the major league level over the years. The roster currently boasts home grown talents like Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, Jon Gray, Trevor Story, and DJ LeMahieu among others. So the question remains, who is the next player to emerge a fantasy star? Go ahead and take your best guess, it’s the Rockies Top Prospects for 2018 Fantasy Baseball.
