1. SS Leo De Vries | 19 | AA | 2027
We don’t often see a prospect like De Vries get traded before his 20th birthday, if at all, so it was kind of shocking to see him moved for a reliever, even one as dominant as Mason Miller. Sacramento pushed the switch hitter to Double-A at age 18, where he slashed .281/.359/.551 with five home runs and two stolen bases in 21 games. He even showed plus plate skills: 9.7% walks against 19.4% strikeouts. It’ll be interesting to see how they time this out because he’s got a legitimate case to open the season in Triple-A at 19, an age he’ll stay until October 11th this year. Seems probably we’ll see him in the majors before he turns 20, and that’s a pretty consistent predictor of sustained stardom. Incredible work on the trade market by Sacramento in my opinion.

Today’s a pretty big deal for Nationals RHP Cade Cavalli, who will make his first MLB appearance since his major league debut in 2022. He allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings that night and hasn’t been doing a whole lot better than that in Triple-A this year (6.09 ERA in 65 innings), so he’s a pretty obvious ratio-bomb waiting to happen. Probably wise to avoid unless he can string a few solid outings together.

1. 1B Nick Kurtz | 22 | AA | 2025
At 6’5” 240 from the left side, Kurtz fits the prototype of a high-OBP, big-power corner bat. The Athletics selected fourth overall and sent him to Low-A, where he slashed .400/.571/.960 with four home runs in seven games. So naturally, the team sent him right by High-A and onto Double-A Midland, where he hit .300 for five games before a hamstring strain ended his regular season. He got back in action during the fall and played well enough that he might get a long look in training camp as the team will be eager to generate fan interest.
