While the 2nd basemen to target is a necessary evil like changing your underwear. This post, well, have you seen the top 20 shortstops for 2025 fantasy baseball? Dude, why did you not draft one of the glorious top top TOP guys? Did you show up late to your draft because they required you to wear pants? I’m hopeful that everyone rosters at least one shortstop prior to getting to the sleepers in this post, and likely two. Top shortstops are the bee’s knees, and bees have knees; I’m a scientist. This is a (legal-in-all-countries-except-Lichtenstein) supplement to the top 20 shortstops for 2025 fantasy baseball. The players listed have a draft rank after 200 on other sites. I love lots of top shortstops, but they’re not here because I didn’t see them after the draft price of 200. Click on the player’s name where applicable to read more and see their 2025 projections. Anyway, here’s some shortstops to target for 2025 fantasy baseball:

Carlos Correa (ESPN 229, Yahoo 225, NFBC 243) So, first off the bat, the shortstops to target are awful. These aren’t shortstops to target. The shortstops to target are Gunnar Henderson! The shortstops to target are Oneil Cruz, are Elly De La Cruz, are Bobby Witt Jr., are Treat Urner! Are you following? There’s roughly six dozen top shortstops, you better draft one of those. These shortstops to target are in deep leagues if you punted UTIL or MI, maybe, but even MI — listen, if you have Gunnar Henderson, awesome, then draft Westburg or Tovar or Volpe or someone else as your MI. Then, you mosey up to pick 200 and you need a UTIL guy? Fine, Carlos Correa. Or one of these shortstops to “target.” As I said in the opening, 2nd basemen to target or catchers or next the third basemen to target, those are guys to target. These are, “Crap, I accidentally forgot to draft a shortstop and now I’m a little screwed, please help.”

Tommy Edman (ESPN 247) I don’t know if Tom Ed can pull off getting 500+ plate appearances in the Dodgers’ lineup because there are a lot of mouths to feed, but, if T.E. can, he’s going to struggle to not be top 200 overall valuable. His last three years when he had 500+ PAs:

11/30/.262
13/32/.265
13/27/.248

That’s 2021, 2022 and 2023. Last year was a lost year, and he’s still 29. Give him 500+ PAs in Dodgers’ lineup and a glimpse of who he used to be (am I singing Gotye?) and he goes 12/30/.250 with 70 RuBIs pretty easily.

Tyler Fitzgerald (ESPN 273, Yahoo 224, NFBC 233) This goes back to what I was saying in the Correa blurb. I am not 100% sold on these guys. They are flyers or Tylers, in this case. I can’t figure out if Fitzgerald is a guy who went 15/17/.280 last year in only 314 ABs and is about to go 30/30/.280 over the course of a full year (incredibly unlikely but I’d defer to Mr. Prorater for further prorating) or if he’s about to go 15/17/.230 as almost every projections system seems to think, as, I guess, they think he had Maas Appeal last year. I don’t know, tee bee aitch. He did go 22/32/.292 in 2023 in the minors, so it’s not like he’s never shown this, but he is also 27 already. He might be a late bloomer, but a lot of times people who seem like late bloomers get exposed in their 2nd season. I’m gently farting in Joey Meneses’s direction for the latest late bloomer who bloomed and then died on the vine.

Kristian Campbell (ESPN NR, Yahoo 318, NFBC 300) Gave you an entire Kristian Campbell fantasy. It was written in the dark, drab month of November, but it holds up remarkably well. I printed it up, leant it against a cabinet and it’s still holding up. Still think David Hamilton is the Red Sox starter in April, but Campbell could be up quickly in May. Then we will call him Soup, because of his last name and the can is red like his hair. Could Campbell be the best redhead in Boston since. Dot dot dot. Who? Dennis Johnson?

Jacob Wilson (ESPN NR, Yahoo NR, NFBC 368) He’s hitting .220 in the spring with a 4.9% strikeout rate, which is hilarious and also him to a tee, i.e., if you placed the ball on a tee, he’d hit a grounder to 2nd base. He does have two random spring homers though, so maybe he gets poppin’ in SacTown like a white boy listening to Macklemore in Seattle.

Luisangel Acuña (ESPN NR, Yahoo NR, NFBC 387) Don’t have much faith in Brett Baty and had more faith in Acuña, but he seems behind Baty in the McNeil Great Replacement Theory. (That’s the only time that’s been used, right?) Guys and five girl readers, for the love of all that is holy, draft a shortstop early. It is a deep position and should not be punted for later options.

Hi Grey,

Thoughts on Walter Buehler, Reese Olson and Kris Bubic?

1. Are they all streamers?

2. Do you have a favorite?

3. How would you prioritize these three?

Thanks!!!

Fantrax 12-Team Best Ball (40 players – 3 Utility) – one of the drafts that crashed last night. I am fairly new to Best Ball. I usually wait on pitching in most leagues but was advised to wait even longer in Best Ball because hitters accumulate so many more points in that format. I think I may have been too extreme with that strategy. Obviously, no lineup changes or waivers or trades in Best Ball so nothing I can do now. It is a league where you only have to finish in the top 5 to double your money. The players in bold would be the hitters I think would score most weeks. Do you think this team can achieve that goal?

Thanks. I was thinking I’d be shifting Bregman to 2B, which kinda fed into taking Paredes. I ended up waiting forever before I took a Colt Keith in the 25th. It was a bit liberating to not chase a 2B for that reason, but since then I’m feeling less certain that Bregman actually mans 2B, or soon enough for the option to help as I might want.

I took Ward and Paredes before Yandy, but thinking Yandy might help my batting average, which seems low.

Not a shortstop, but I’m curious about your thoughts on Austin Hays this year as a deep bench stash. Hitting cleanup right behind EDC isn’t a bad spot to be in.

Guy in my league kept Trout over JRod and drafted Robert Jr, Ozzie, Jasson Dom., Strider, deGrom, G. Rod, Roki, and McClanahan. It’s only an 8 team league but I still think that’s too much risk. Should I be jealous of his strategy? Or should I pray for the guy?

Hi Grey,

Good afternoon.

As many here, had my draft last night.

12 team mix, with 1 UTL, BB, only Saves
H2H

3 Keeper League

Due to some picks trading last season, i didnt have Rd 2, 3, 4, and 6.

C – Will Smith
1b – Harper (k)
2b – Andres Gimenez
3b – Matt Chapman
SS – CJ Abrams
OF – Tucker (k)
OF – Brenton Doyle
OF – Crow-Armstrong
UTL – Ohtani (k)
BN – Heliot Ramos
BN – Colton Crowser

SP – Reynaldo Lopez
SP – Pfaadt
RP – Duran
RP – Robert Suarez
P – Pepiot
P – Ranger Suarez
P – Jobe
P – Boyd
P – Dvaid Peterson
P – Shane Bieber

I think I have good mix of HR, Runs and SBs.

Hopefully Doyle pays out.
Abrams fell to Rd 9 and took him instead of a SP.

SP – i waited as I didnt have picks. But have upside with Pfaast and Pepiot and then stable ratios with Reynaldo and Ranger.
Bieber was 2nd to last pick.

Maybe this team can be top 5-6.

What do you think? Any changes or categories to you think I should look in WW?

thanks for the input.

regards
Chris

Grey, need to submit my second keeper today and options are Duran, Jazz, Olson and Skubal (Witt is my first Keeper).

Leaning towards Jazz. I pick 9th and this is league full of Yankees fans who hate Red Sox so Duran could hopefully fall to me there if things go right.

Thoughts?

Don’t know if it matters but Baty tinkered with his swing to generate more lift.

Hi Grey,

Love your stuff. I’m in this 12-team 6×6 (IP, OBP) keeper auction league where I’ve finished middle of the pack the past few years. This year, I may have overspent for Betts, but I felt like I needed to add an impact bat if I was going to get anywhere. I have way too much SP; we have a 200-start limit for the season. They were all cheap. I didn’t expect to get Joe Ryan or Taj Bradley for $2 but here we are. I somehow do this every season. I tried hard to trade away Snell for hitting or saves last year, but no one was biting. Anyway, can you assess my team? I feel like I need to try to trade SP for a CI. But it’s an uphill battle in this league.

C – Yainer Diaz (kept)
1B – Yandy Diaz
2B – Altuve (kept)
3B – Austin Riley (kept)
SS – Masyn Winn
MI – Ketel (kept)
CI – Baty
OF – Betts, Teoscar (kept), Merrill (kept), Edman, Jasson D (kept)
UT – Ozuna (kept)

P – Snell
P – Senga
P – Ragans (kept)
P – Schwellenbach (kept)
P – Rodon
P – Cristopher Sanchez
P – Carlos Estevez
P – Bowden Francis
P – Cade Smith

Bench – Rengifo, Joe Ryan, Taj Bradley
Minors – Sebastian Walcott, Christian Moore, Leodalis De Vries

CI free agents: N Lowe, Carlos Santana, Josh Jung, Josh Bell, Joey Ortiz, Nolan Schanuel (your knockoff murse pun made me lol), Ryan McMahon, Tyler Soderstrom

Hey grey-
Headed into a 14 team 5×5 redraft. Any special strategies for the deep league generally?
I have the 4 pick- do I go sp for my third pick (#32) or wait until 50 or 58? I know you have plenty of sp ranked around 50 but I think others will double up and they’ll be gone before then

League is a 6×6 (R,HR,RBI,ST,AVG,OPS x IP,QS,K/9,ERA,WHIP,Net SV) 12-team Roto league, but with deep benches, so it plays more like a 14-15 teamer:

C- Wong ($1)
1B- Alonso ($20)
2B- Semien ($13)
3B- Rengifo ($2)
SS- Witt Jr. ($50)
CI- C. Walker ($10)
MI- Adames ($12)
OF- Yordan ($35)
OF- R. Greene ($14)
OF- Happ ($10)
OF- Kwan ($5)
UT- W. Castro ($1)
BN- J. Walker ($1)
NA- R. Anthony ($2)

SP- Gilbert ($20)
SP- Bryce Miller ($14)
SP- Sasaki ($11)
SP- Reynaldo Lopez ($5)
RP- Hader ($17)
RP- Pressly ($4)
P- B. Francis ($5)
P- C. Martin ($2)
P- N. Martinez ($1)
BN- Bello ($1)
BN- D. Peterson ($1)
BN- Birdsong ($1)
BN- Rouppe ($1)
BN- B. Joyce ($1)
NA- Bubba Thompson ($1)

Firstly, shout out to Rudy’s Auction War Room, which came in really handy near the end of the draft. Speaking of, here are the values:
R HR RBI SB AVG W SV ERA WHIP K
42 36.5 35 28.5 32 13.8 15.8 11.8 15 7.1

Not too worried about those pitching numbers, considering how you and Steamer diverge. I got my top 3 SPs and Hader early in the draft, then went to fill out my hitters, only to be scooped on a bunch of late round favorites later. Will have to keep an eye out for Ks I guess!

Good Morning Grey!

Just had our NL-Only Auction over the weekend and would love your thoughts on my team and some advice on who to claim off of WA/FA in the next couple of days. Thank you in advance as this is a lengthy post.

10-Tm, NL-Only, H2H, 5×5 OBP, $280 CAP, Keep 5

CA   Ruiz – $3
1B    Naylor – $23
2B    Garcia – $14
SS    Winn (K) – $2
3B    Vientos -$22
INF   Swanson – $12
OF   Carrol (K) – $36
OF   Chourio (K) – $23
OF   Yelich – $23
OF   Ramos – $16
Util   Mervis – $1
B  Baty – $1
B  N. Gonzales – $1
B  Lee (1) – $1

King – (K) $23
P  Gallen – $22
P  Pfaadt – $11
Rey Lopez – (K) $3
P  Ty. Megill – $1
P  Herz – $1
P  Smith Shawver – $1
P  Edw. Diaz – $22
P  Walker – $18

I feel my hitting could be a consistent force every week even though I don’t have mashers. The only real weakness is my Utility spot and team OBP. My Pitching is really shallow, but I have 4 solid SPs and two of the safer full-time Closers.

A) I feel I got great deal on Naylor. Olson – $46, Freeman – $43, Alonzo – $37. I was able to use the extra $10 I had budgeted for him on a top closer (Ed. Diaz) instead of settling for Pressly, Romano, or Al. Diaz

B) I screwed up paying for a 2nd CL. This cost me one of Ray, Steele, or Sanchez. I doubt I can trade straight up for one of them now even though I paid more.

D) Please rank the following for how you’d start the season.
Mervis, Gonzales, Baty, Scott II, Perdomo, Bride, Sheets, P. Smith

E) Please rank SPs
Herz, AS-S, Canning, Irvin, Abbott, Kranek, Ashcraft,

F) Please rank RPs
Tay. Rogers, Halvorsen, Ashcraft, Barlow,

G) Any of the pitchers you’d rather have over a bench bat in order to give me a total of 10? My league is made up of mostly LAD fans, so Lee could be a good guy to hold for trading away later. I’d like to hold onto him if possible.

I appreciate all the great content!

Thank you Grey! I felt much more confident holding off on big names for 1.5 and 2x the money of Naylor, Garcia, Ramos, and Vientos that you weee recommending.

I feel that Pfaadt was the biggest surprise. I had $21 for 9 spots when Pfaadt came out. There were guys with twice as much money and fewer spots left who passed him over. Hoping this is a breakout year for him.

Hi Grey,

10 team roto – had the 10 pick. was agonizing over Carrol vs Chourio but Carrol ended up going before my pick. Any deficiencies that you think I need to address? My worries are avg and K’s though we have high innings limits so can typically stream my way up the board. Think that I’m ok with power… Really wanted Rooker but he went 34!

1B: Olsen
2B: Luis Garcia
SS: Oneil Cruz

ESPN did a pretty major overhaul of their roto rankings after that article came out, fyi. It seemed like they went over to FantasyPros and just used their aggregated ADPs as their own rankings.

Hey Grey!

Trying to plan ahead for my home league draft this weekend (10 team 5×5 h2h keep 4), my keepers are Vlad (1), Yordan (2), Riley (11), and Elly (10). I pick on the end so my first picks will be end of round 3/beginning of round 4. Because of keepers, technically the this equates with rounds 7/8 standard.

We start 4 OF, no MI/CI, 2 UTIL.

Looking at some combination of Albies, O. Cruz, Rooker, Langford there for bats. Probably Yamamoto, deGrom, King, maybe Ragans, Glasnow there for pitchers. (None of these guys likely to make it back.) This is where the top closers go too.

What would be your top 2 picks? I would be tempted by these bats but am thinking I’ve got to come away with at least one SP.

Thanks!

Edman tied for league lead in RBIs!!! VICTORY LAP!

I wonder if he can manage to get both SS and 2B elig to go with CF. Mookie gave him a series of PT there already at 2B.

Was I not paying attention and he was nursing an injury or is the Freeman scratch out of nowhere? I acquired him Saturday night and well, dang!

Fitzgerald has me intrigued but in a hottie at the bar with a weird vibe and unsure if I will wake up missing a kidney.

Ahhh yes. When everyone thought you were good to go, we are now encouraged by the injury news.

I don’t know how a 23 year old who went 20/30 last year is being drafted outside the top 200. Zach Neto. Yeah he hurt his shoulder but so did Ohtani. I have been targeting Neto of late. He should be a top 50 pick with those numbers….

Yeah I waited on SS in the RCL last night on the 11 hole and took him, story and picked up Jacob Wilson. An interesting experiment

  1. How worried are you about David Bednar? It’s hard to tell if his struggles now are Spring related, trying something new, a slow start….but at 30 years old and on a team with no real threats to overtake him, he still hasn’t been named the closer yet. Would you be looking elsewhere? It’s a Fangraphs points league where categories don’t matter but saves and holds get points, and efficiency matters. I’ve already added Nunez, but would Jeremiah Estrada be a better add?
  2. Same Fangraphs points league…..bench Justin Steele tomorrow, right?

Thanks a lot! Once I got Roki for a ton less than I expected it was easy going from there. Boring is what I was aiming for – it’s all about QS and volume in this league on the weekly matchups. So few guys get QS anymore, I’ll take all 6 IP 3 ER guys I can get haha.

Hopefully the one tonight goes well.

Hey Grey! Did you wake up early for the game today? Speaking of SS, Turang’s shoulder MRI came out clean. He just, uh, can’t throw… seems like a key skill for a defense oriented MI to have. How worried to be, on scale of 1 to Giancarlo?

Grey is correct (he usually is). This is a dispiriting group of ballplayers. Do as he advises and “draft a shortstop early. It is a deep position and should not be punted for later options.” But do not despair if you happen to drag your feet. Instead, perhaps use the google machine and inquire about “Jennifer Connelly Target”. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and you’ll probably forget about MLB shortstops for a while. You’re welcome.

Yikes, what poo. I’ve messed up if I need to draft any of these for MI or UTY, although somebody like Edman or Castro, I like for my bench.

Grey,

Awesome!!

a) In an RCL, add Cam Smith in the CI over Soderstrom?

b) Rodney Dangerfield quote of the day for March 18, 2025

No respect, things break down in our building the superintendent is so lazy I had to trick him. I invited him to a party at my place. He replied and said thanks can I bring something. I go, yeah a wrench and a pair of galoshes!

Cheers,
Ante
