Razzball Commenter League drafts are in full force! It’s officially DRAFT SZN. Don’t let the chance to play with your favorite writers and commenters in free leagues for an overall top prize pass you by! Our first draft of the year went off a little over a week ago and we have spots left to fill in leagues all this month. Next week we’ll really dive into the data, but the RCL ADP Spreadsheet is up and data is entered. Feel free to peruse as you scheme about your draft strategy. To help the data pool, go sign up for a league drafting in the next couple of weeks and contribute. It’s so easy to sign up, it’s really just one click! Use it as a mock draft that is actually useful! If you’ve always wanted to join a competitive league, there are openings in Crab Army and a few spots in one of our fiercest money leagues, DFSers Anonymous. Leave a message below and I’ll get you an invite! There is also a league drafting TOMORROW NIGHT (8 PM ET) with one spot left! Click the link to join. Today, we’ll be going over how to approach your pitching in the RCL format, hopefully, to get you prepped for the first draft of the year.
The subject of RCL pitching has been covered many times before, quite Brucely, much more succinctly than I could cover it. Oaktown Steve started the streaming phenomenon way back in the year 2010. From that, Rudy felt he could improve the process and thus birthed the Stream-O-Nator! The world hasn’t been the same since. Finally, Rudy covered the importance of maximizing IP and how to value our streamers here. That should be enough clickbait and reading to get you off to sleep tonight where visions of ERA, WHIP, and K/9 (or K%) will dance in your head. If you’re feeling lazy though, I’ll give you the cliff notes version with a couple of my own notes.
First off, let’s go over the draft. I wouldn’t leave an RCL draft with any more than 5 starting pitchers. With the moves limit, I tend to lean more towards 4, but you do you. I suggest embracing streaming pitchers as much as you are comfortable with. The moves limit shouldn’t be a factor while streaming a couple of pitchers per week. Where you choose to draft your 4-5 pitchers is very important as well. I’m not here to suggest that if you draft a pitcher in the first round, you’ll lose the league, but you’re not doing yourself any favors. I typically target rounds 4-6 for my first and sometimes second SP.
An IP limit in the RCLs basically turns the strikeout category into K/9. That makes those high-K/9 starters even more valuable as a base to build around. I am fully aware of my streaming (in)abilities and I know that streaming will have an effect on my ratios, nailing down two SPs that will help those ratios is a must. Doing so without leaving your offense inept is the real challenge. The latest I would wait to grab my first starter would be round 8 or 9. After that, you’re playing with fire. Even then, you’re going to have to hit on the starters you do roster and have them turn in solid seasons.
If you’re not into grabbing two starters in the 4-6 round range, then the 6th-7th is a prime spot for an elite relief pitcher to help those ratios and strikeout rate. Emmanual Clase will likely go just before this spot, his elite K-rate is a huge asset. Right around this spot we’ll also find Devin Williams, Josh Hader, and Edwin Diaz, all fine choices. Jhoan Duranm Jeff Hoffman, and Alexis Diaz could be handy for those who miss on the top 4 or 5 RPs.
The back end of the draft is all about relief pitchers and speculative saves. This is especially true with early drafts, happening now, while jobs are in flux or we wait for a deal and teams sign players and shake things up. If you can steal a closer before the season even starts, that’s gravy, and everyone loves gravy.
Essentially, if you can come out of the draft with some rough semblance of the 66/20/14 split (Hitters/Starters/Relievers) that Rudy recommends, you’ll be doing well. My drafts tend to be a little more towards 70/15/15, but it depends on what I like late. As long as you recognize what you’ve got and have a plan, you’re much better off than most.
Once the season has started, your ability to maximize your roster spots becomes directly tied to your success. With only three bench spots, it is imperative to use them to their fullest. Those three bench spots are your “swing” spots and can be used however is needed, depending on the day. Don’t think of your team as having only three bench spots, think of the waiver wire as your rolling bench.
I almost always try to have a full hitting roster out there. By default, this means my three bench spots are almost always hitters, however, if there’s a day when all my hitters are playing, I use those bench spots to swap in some relief pitchers. In an ideal world, you’ll have 8 RPs and a starter going almost every day. With relief pitchers, I’m almost always looking for good ratios and K/9 studs. That extra boost in K/9 will be huge in deciding the strikeout category in leagues.
When the time comes (at the end of the season), you need to know your loopholes. There was always a heated discussion over the 188 GS with ESPN and the same is true with FanTrax but with IP. With FanTrax the loophole remains that ANY pitching stats accumulated on the day you go over 1400 IP will count. This is the same way Yahoo!’s IP limit works, for those familiar. Ideally, you’d have a day where you finish with 1399.6 IP and then stack your lineup for the day you go over, trying to eke out every extra strikeout and/or win you can. Of course, pulling the trigger on this massive stat grab can have negative effects as well, so if you’re in a tight battle for ERA and/or WHIP, it may not be the best choice.
All of your pitching freezes once you hit 1400 IP so your final pitching numbers are your final numbers. That means it is very important to keep tabs on your leaguemates and know who might need one category or another down the stretch. Paying attention to these things can mean the difference between catching a team or two in a category and winning or losing a league. You don’t need to win Saves by more than one save to get those twelve precious category points.
All of the decisions ultimately come down to where the most points can be gained. It’s up to you to recognize your team’s needs and how they relate to the rest of the league. If you’re running away with the pitching categories, cut back on your RPs and stream the heck out of SAGNOF delights and/or some all-or-nothing power plays. If the opposite is true, keep those empty pitching slots filled with the nastiest middle relievers you can get your paws on.
Now you have a pretty good idea of what you should be doing, go test out a draft strategy. The RCLs are a great place to test out an extreme strategy and see what happens. Go big or go home!
TO JOIN A LEAGUE
Click the LINK in the ‘League Link’ column (see below grid) for the time you want and voila, you’re in. If you’re not signed up at Fantrax, you need to do that too (it’s free). Damn, that’s too easy. Oh, I guess I should also mention make sure you’re joining a league for free or for money, depending on your preference. That’s it! You can join as many leagues as you like. If you accidentally join a league, you can quit a league by going to OTHER –> All Options –> Quit League (located at the bottom). Now go join some leagues!
Want to be my Twitter pal? That’s kinda creepy, but you can follow me here: @MattTruss
Hi Truss, I live in Europe and would love to join more than one RCL. Any chance any more with afternoon EST draft times open up before season? I’m already in RCL #25. Thank you!
i could maybe update one of the RCLs with only one manager if there’s more interest. obviously the current draft time isn’t drawing people in
I tried to get people interested in a Tokyo draft, but 6 AM ET didn’t draw a lot of interest.
I definitely learned a lot about the RCL World doing my first RCL last weekend (I believe you are in that one – RCL 33). I didn’t prioritize RP enough and took too many SP. But, it’s not the end of the world, as I went SP heavy toward the end of the draft. I really liked taking my top SP at the beginning of round 5 and then waiting until r10 for my SP2 and then going SP heavy for a little bit in that stretch.
Any thoughts about my staff in that one?
Ragans
Greene
Gavin Williams (13th round – total reach)
Alcantara
Arrighetti
Robbie Ray
Ronel Blanco
Weathers
Myers
RP are Munoz and took a stab at Dennis Santana since I think he could usurp Bednar.
Overall, I’m thinking I should drop Myers for another promising RP or a bench bat.
they are a different beast for sure. i ended with four SPs and don’t love my staff. yours looks nice, but if you run all nine of those guys out each time, you’ll run out of innings by august and be short on saves, so that’s a balance too, right? we only have 1400 IP to work with. blanco will probably end up being a streamer, but you can always wait a few starts to make that call.
Yeah, I didn’t realize there was an innings limit. But all good. I like my bats, but should have taken a 2nd closer and a bat instead of a couple of those guys. However, I also think there’s a lot of risk with Ray and Alcantara – and Williams being so young. I love Weathers but not sure he has a full season in him. so it should all play out.
FWIW – if you wanna trade for a 5th starter, I am open!
RCL 35 $20 League needs one more! drafting Sat. March 22 9:00PM EST
If no one fills the slot by this weekend, I will consider jumping in. For my last RCL, I was looking for a “plain vanilla” RCL but I can consider RCL 35 instead
And, again, DFSers ANONYMOUS is a great, competitive RCL! Join the fun !!
I recognize a few of the names in RCL35 so it will likely be competitive. Still need one more.
As for DFS, yeah, we still need 3 more, I promise we dont bite… unless you like that sort of thing
Normally I’m so happy to embrace the 4 (or even 3) SP plan in the RCL drafts but I already can tell it’s going to be hard for me to lay off some of the mid range arms that I’ve gotten used to stocking up on in my draft and hold type leagues this season!
Also… sorry if this has already been asked and answered multiple times (probably by me alone), but how are we handling the Tokyo games in RCLs?
The stats count. If you draft after the games, any player drafted into your starting lineup will contribute the Tokyo numbers.
Thanks Vin!
yes, thank you vin!
DFSers ANONYMOUS still needs a few. You get to play with Matt Truss and a few other payers who have made it to the Champion’s League (COUGS R US) in past seasons !!! And, it’s one of the only RCLs with a money prize still with openings.
Come join the fun/competition
We need 4 more people in RCL #24!
Crab Army
back in the day, a bunch of nerds here at razzball started a 30 team dynasty league and it’s members became known as the crab army. we try and have an RCL every year, but some years we can’t 12 people to fill it, so we must recruit from the masses. it’s a decent league, join if you like!
Great info! I had my first Roto draft this weekend where I drafted several SPs late which violates your guidance ugh. Not experienced with the innings limits. So given that, do I drop a few starters to get bench bats and/or RPs? Or?
All advice welcomed. Thick skin over here.
C – S Perez
CI – Harper, Caminero, Casas
MI – Altuve, O Cruz, Tovar
OF – Tucker, Suzuki, Cast, Ward, Robles
U – Bleday
Bench- McMahon
Sp – Shota, Yamamoto, Flaherty, Eovaldi, Buehler, Darvish, Luzardo, Woodruff
RP – Munoz, Joyce, Erceg
so, this advice is specific to the razzball commenter leagues, it’s hard to know how your league will be for making moves in season. if it’s a shallow league like the RCLs, i think you can definitely lose, luzardo and woodruff, maybe even darvish and just stream those spots based on match-ups and stream hitters/RPs otherwise. but, use your judgement based on what is on the waiver wire. if you think you can easily get a 4 ERA and 8 K/9 from guys on waivers, there’s no reason to keep woodruff or luzardo around.
RCL 12 teamer, 25 roster spots. Guys like Heaney, Mikolas, Bassitt on the WW.
Won’t Woodruff go to IR freeing up a spot to grab a streamer?
ya, sure, you can stash him there if he’s going to start on the IR, that’s fine.
Trying to increase bats and reduce SPs based on your comments above. How do you like his Skubal, Hoerner and Arrendondo for my Shota, Caminero and Woodruff?
The other option is to leave Woidruff and Hoerner out of the deal and just do a 2-2.
i like the skubal side, especially if you need some SBs

Thanks!!!!!
Martin
there’s a few scary elbows there, fried especially is an avoid for me this year, but everyone has their own risk tolerance. otherwise I’m into it. i like mize as a dart throw and may as a what the heck, see below. probably wouldn’t add any of them over who you have right now though
Thank you!

Thanks for feedback!
looks good! i like the eury stash and am back in lodolo this year, i can’t quite him. as for may – anything we get is gravy. i have little expectations considering the dodgers rotation depth, but with no expectations, there’s no where to go but up!
Thanks!! I figure May is insurance for a Glasnow injury.
makes sense!
