It is about that time, you’re checking Grey’s daily updates, know your draft position, and need some last minute tips. As high profile fantasy leagues like Tout Wars and broadcasts begin to infuse OBP an advanced way to look at player productivity, this is an effort to provide you with more data for your OBP drafts this year. First a few notes to consider while reading…

Draft crunch OBP$ – AVG$

  1. The stats below are from the Streamnator 5×5 OBP and 5×5 AVG broken down into categorical dollar values. The number under SB or OBP is the dollar amount a player is predicted to return in a given category this year by Streamer.
  2. Word of fair warning, these projections and recommendations are strictly for OBP usage, do not interpret for standard leagues that use AVG.
  3. I realize OBP is just one category, so this is not a manual of everyone on how to draft, but if you take some low OBP/High Steals players early or plan to later, these picks can help even out your roster at different times in the draft.
  4. Remember the values used below are the $ Values if you see “8.7” under a category that is $8.7 worth of expected production.

For those of you in deeper leagues that use non-conventional scoring, you may also find an assortment of useful Roto and DFS Razzball tools available for consumption. To gather that in-season edge, check out Grey and Rudy’s cabinet of goodies the Streamonator, Hittertron, and DFSBot. See the entire variety and subscribe here.

For this preview, I will pick a few beneficial/detrimental picks for each position from an OBP $ perspective.

1B Early Draft: Carlos Santana (+7.3) ridiculous OBP skills, avoid (this is nitpicky) but Albert Pujols (-.7) all of the 1B have elite OBP numbers and Albert’s OBP is flat in comparison.

1B Late Draft: Lucas Duda (+4.4) gives you OF as well and avoid Matt Adams (-2.5), Streamer is not an OBP of Adams this year.

OBP$ – AVG$ sorted by ranking (ESPN eligibility)

Name POS PA R HR RBI SB OBP Avg. OBA – AVG
Albert Pujols 1B 619 4.5 7.7 7.6 -1.2 2.2 2.9 -0.7
Carlos Santana 1B/3B 621 4.7 5.1 4.9 -1.2 6.9 -0.4 7.3
Lucas Duda 1B 578 0.8 5.5 2.9 -1.6 2.4 -2 4.4
Matt Adams 1B 554 0.5 4.5 4.4 -1.6 -0.1 2.4 -2.5

2B Early Draft: Hold off an extra on Jose Altuve, he drops almost $5 in value according to Streamer projections, you may want to opt for Brian Dozier a few rounds later (+2.3).

2B Late Draft: Take Luis Valbuena  very late (+2.6) at 2B (or 2B/SS) and avoid Daniel Murphy (-3.5)

OBP$ – AVG$ sorted by ranking (ESPN eligibility)

Name POS PA R HR RBI SB OBP Avg OBA – AVG
Jose Altuve 2B 673 6.6 -3.8 0.6 16.3 3.6 8.4 -4.8
Brian Dozier 2B 644 4.2 1.3 1.3 5 0.8 -1.5 2.3
Daniel Murphy 2B 633 1.6 -3.5 -0.4 2.7 0.9 4.4 -3.5
Luis Valbuena 2B/3B 458 -2.8 -1.3 -2.8 -1.7 1.6 -1 2.6

3B Early Draft: Take a pause on wunderkind Nolen Arenado  (-3.6) and think about the proven Evan Longoria (+1.9), this can maybe be done a round later and provide more value as well.

3B Late Draft: It will cost you some steals, but take Chase Headley  (+2.4) several rounds later than Josh Harrison (-3.9) and your OBP can offset the loss in steals.

OBP$ – AVG$ sorted by ranking (ESPN eligibility)

Name POS PA R HR RBI SB OBP Avg. OBA – AVG
Evan Longoria 3B 643 4.3 7 6.8 -1.7 2.7 0.8 1.9

Chase Headley 3B 531 -0.1 0 0.1 0.3 3.7 1.3 2.4

SS Early Draft: It will cost you in steals, but sometimes Jose Reyes drafters are thinking of his first round days (-2.9), Ben Zobrist (+2.5) will play 2 more positions and can be drafted much, much later.

SS Late Draft:  Jimmy Rollins  is in Act 3 of his career in LA, but he can be picked well after Danny Santana  (-3.9), and they may turn the same profit according to Streamer.

OBP$ – AVG$ sorted by ranking (ESPN eligibility)

Name POS PA R HR RBI SB OBP Avg. OBA – AVG
Jose Reyes SS 653 7.2 -2.4 -0.1 8.8 2.7 5.6 -2.9

Danny Santana SS/OF 592 1.5 -4.4 -2.4 7.8 -1.8 2.1 -3.9

For catchers, I’ll start at mid draft, no discernible difference early in AVG/OBP: I like Russell Martin (+3.7) to overcome  Salvador Perez (-3.6) in terms of value and where they can be drafted.

C Late Draft: Chris Ianetta  is a +5 in terms of $OBP – $AVG, one of the highest gains in OBP value on the board, and can be drafted after midnight. Yadier Molina will sit high in a default queue and cost a much higher pick.

OBP$ – AVG$ sorted by ranking (ESPN eligibility)

Chris Iannetta C 436 -2.8 -1.8 -3.3 -0.6 3.9 -1.1 5

For OF, I’ve done an extensive look here. But let’s look at two early and two late.

OF Early Draft: Jose Bautista  (+6.1) is a hitting machine, his OBP skills are incredible and Jason Heyward did not leadoff at times by mistake (+2.2). Adam Jones (-4.1) is easy to target here, Corey Dickerson also loses ½ of his AVG value (-2.5) on top of the OBP OF board.

OF Late Draft: Curtis Granderson  (+3.9), (besides going to my high school), is liked by the Streamnator, he and Matt Joyce  (+3.1) can be late-late round value with Alex Rios  (-3.9) and Carl Crawford (2.5) being players to pass on.

Just a few disclaimers and notes:

-The list started with 350, but a few players were not on both lists, so I ended up with 345.

-If you look at an OBP 5×5 and an AVG 5 x 5, some of the SB or HR maybe be off .1 just because the overall weighting is different. I think the values are so similar though, they support the comparison in this post.

Great article, I have my 10 keeper OBP league coming up. As champion I have 10, 11th pick.

Currenlty, kept Arenado, Pence, Brantley and HRAM. Kershaw Strausburg and Shoemaker.

The mock draft, that happened last week went Hamilton, Beltre, Dickerson, AGon, Cargo, Santana, possibly Marte, Pujols and Frazier then my two picks.

Would you consider taking C Davis Fielder Votto, Heyward, Kinsler, Kipnis, Cruz.

I am hoping that Marte drops but i highly doubt it. Thoughts?

Thank you and congrats on last year’s championship. You have a nice balance of hitting/pitching, I’d consider Votto and Fielder depending on your appetite for risk (Fielder) and how much power has been kept in this league, Streamer has Votto as the 12th best hitter in an OBP format because he could lead the league in that category and allow you to take some more power/speed players later with the extra OBP cache.

  4. Jonfin says:

Great article! With Santana having C-eligibility, how high would you reach for him in a 2 catcher league (10 teams)?

    • Blues

      Blues says:
      (link)

@Jonfin: Thanks Jonfin, Santana had 10 games starter as catcher last year, meaning in yahoo leagues he qualifies at catcher. I think this moves him just after the top 15 in overall hitters in a 2 CA format, maybe 15-20 overall.

1b/3b/Ca eligibility will help at an extreme rare position immensely.

(Hey Blues I gotta borrow your space for a bit..)
I’m looking for a last minute replacement (or two) for my H2H OBP league. _Auction_ Draft is tomorrow (March 28th) at 10pm ET. League is hosted by ESPN. We use FAAB for in-season acquisition. And yeah I seriously don’t know right now if I need one or two replacements because one guy didn’t get back to me as to whether he can make the draft. It’s my home league. There are a few other rules quirks as well, nothing that should make or break your involvement so I’ll let only the people interested know.

    Reply here if interested. Thanks.

And thanks for checking out this really good article by Blues.

    Hey Blues,

Question…I ran the 6×6 w/ OBP on the player rater and Dozier comes up ranked #94 whereas he is #49 in Grey’s top 400 that doesn’t factor in OBP. Any thoughts on that?

Also, I noticed Votto jumps from the 90s in grey’s top 400 to the top 20 on the player rater with OBP included. How high would you draft him in a OBP league?

Good questions Braves fan (and maybe neighbor from GA)
Dozier’s AVG. had leveled between .224-..244 in his last 3 yrs compared to OBP at .271, .312. and .346. He has signs of improving each year in OBP, BB%, and ISO have all crept up and he’s 27. Looking at his value against just hitters, the $ value came out about 75th maybe a split of those because the ISO is not that high and the BABIP has been steady at about .270 each year.

I get asked about Votto a lot, he played hurt last year, and I would hope to land him at a discount between 25-30 on the board. He can return top 15 value if everything falls right, but after a lost year, I’d hedge a little and look for him at the end of rnd 2 or beginning rnd 3 where the 30 HR power has already been drafted,

This Braves team being so different this year, what do you expect and any players to keep an eye on early in the season for a breakout?

@Blues: Thanks for the detailed answer. I’m actually from Birmingham so not far from Georgia. I used to follow the braves very closely, but the frediot and liberty media’s budget cap have caused me to lose interest the last two years. Talkingchop is the braves blog that I used to read daily. Its a pretty good source of in depth info on the team. Whenever they finally fire fredi I’ll probably start following the team closely again.

@letsgobravos: Appreciate the inside blog reference, I’m from Chicago, and Bleed Cubbie Blue (another blog), but have sort of adopted the Braves since coming to Charlotte years and years ago…
