On Dancer! On Prancer! On–Oh, I didn’t hear you come in. Welcome, reader! Grab some egg nog and brandy it up to the fire. You look festive. I love that Rudolph tongue ring. That’s the great thing about Christmas, no matter what your interpretation is, it’s all about commercialism. That’s unless you light the Munenori Kawasaki. The 2016 fantasy baseball rankings are not far away. Right now, January Grey is throwing darts at a board to figure out where to rank Rusney Castillo. Exciting! In the meantime, let’s look at the players who have multiple position eligibility for this upcoming 2016 fantasy baseball season. The biggest surprise from this list? Sean Rodriguez played how many games at 1st base? Hayzeus Cristo! I did this list of multi-position eligible players because I figured it would help for your 2016 fantasy baseball drafts. I’m a giver, snitches! Happy Holidays! I only listed players that have multiple position eligibility of ten games or more played outside of their primary position. Not FIVE games at a position, not six, definitely not seven. Ten games. 10, the Laurel & Hardy of numbers. So this should cover Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, et al (not the Israeli airline). Yes, Christmas came a day early this year. Players with multiple position eligibility are listed once alphabetically under their primary position. This is the only time a year I do anything alphabetically, so I might’ve confused some letters. Is G or H first? Who knows, and, better yet, who cares? Wow, someone’s got the Grinchies, must be the spiked egg nog talking. Anyway, here’s all the players with multiple position eligibility for the 2016 fantasy baseball season and the positions they are eligible at:

What do you think is fair trade value for chapman? In other words who should I give up to get him? He asked for either Trout or Altuve and I turned him down immediately

What is the new post
Hey Grey! Very excited for 2016 fantasy! If eligible at SS, is Manny Machado a first round pick between picks 5-12? Thanks!
Yup
@Grey: Word! Looking forward to the 2016 podcast!
@Grey: AHH, also I have to ask because there is always TV talk going on here, have you watched Making a Murderer? VERY good/aggravating docu series.
Amazing show, take followups to my newest post
Hi Grey. Getting hit with another Canadian blizzard so I am dreaming about spring training. In a redraft roto league would you rather have Bryant or Springer for 2016? Thanks!
Bryant
Grey,
In an OBP league which side do you prefer?
Kluber and Arenado
Kershaw and McCutch
Thanks
@Who’s on first: Or JD and Kluber for Kershaw
JD
Kershaw
I keep 8 in a 16 man league. I have kershaw, sale, cueto, harper, goldy, mccutchen, tulo, kipnis and tyson ross. Should I trade cueto for braun then try to pair ross with someone for a better player?
I’d want Braun
ok, now with this roster and 42.273 mil left for at least 6 spots (up to 9 if i drop leone/urena and minor alvarez)
C d’arnaud
CI beltre (probably, i still have to match whatever offer he gets or take the pick(s) by the 3rd)
CI smoak
MI segura
MI alcides
OF leonys
OF a-jax (man i should’ve traded him a couple of months back when i had an offer, now he has no team and still costs 6.4)
OF altherr
util e.rosario
BN drury
SP liriano, z.davies, quintana, sale
RP melancon, fien, rj alvarez, leone, urena (these last 3 current listed in minors, but i can’t minor the last 2)
and 6 more BN spots to fill (at least 2 SP needed at some point).
Trying to see if bidding on any restricted FA makes sense (and up to how much)
guys that could be worth it
CI – plouffe, valencia, aroid (he’ll bost too much though)
MI – walker, h.kendrick
OF – fowler, souza
SP – chen, lackey, miley, erasmo, peavy, tomlin, kazmir, hammel
RP – a.miller (he’ll cost too much though), nate jones, joe smith, romo, benoit
The much bigger list of just straight free agents includes (we’ll bid on these post draft, in FEB, i’m just showing these for what will be left if i get none of the restricted guys.
CI – colabello, yunel, yogt, dan murphy, c.hernandez, espinosa, howard, napoli, matt duffy, marwin, v-mart, pearce, sandoval, laroche
MI – j-honney, alexei ram, e.escobar (MIN), kike, kelby tom, giovatella, villar
OF – werth, maybin, beltran, byrd, blanco, aokidoki, pham, bj upton (starting now again, but for how long)
SP – fatolo, b.anderson, koehler, bolsinger, shoemaker, hellickson, erv santana, godley, c.anderson, j.chavez, roark, sabbathia
RP – tons of good names here
Looking like i might want bid on some SP, or anybody else?
Be interested in seeing Chavez’s role… And Roark… Shoemaker could work too… Looks like you need SPs, right?
@Grey: right, last year, about 11 months ago i bid on and won c.anderson and chavez for cheap, neither were technically starters at the time. the only list i need to worry about between now and jan 1st is the top list, the restricted FA, those are being bid on right now. the bottom list doesn’t apply till post draft, those are just standard FA, winning bid would win them, nobody has rights to them.
@goodfold2: all of sale/liriano/quintana’s contracts expire after this year, so i don’t want to give long term deal to somebody that doesn’t have future value, so most of that list of SP would be one year deals from me if any.
Yeah, one year deals is more than enough on any of these guys
Ah… Bid on Kazmir, Lackey, Chen, Hammel… Guess you could use Walker too, right?
@Grey: walker could play at util or backup. what’s biggest bid for those sound about like, i’ll assume beltre gets bid up to around 8-10 but not much more, and if much more i can just take the pick rather than pay near the 18 of last year. this would leave around 32 mil for 6-8 spots total left. probably will have to give werth some sort of action as i need homers pretty badly (not the 12 he got from me last year that i’m still paying 6 of now)
@goodfold2: with smoak as a starter i’m probably more in need at CI than MI.
But you don’t have a 2nd baseman, do you?
I wouldn’t expect Beltre to get much better
@Grey: we play 2 CI, 2 MI, 3 OF, 1 util, 1 C, don’t need 2B in particular. if drury gets play i’d have him of course, and i could put him down if he’s not up also. so right now i’ll assume i match beltre’s bid (probably only 7-11 or so million, not the 18 he made before), leaving me with 31-35 million to make somewhere in the 6-10 players to add, with around 2-3 of those being SP. The difference of 6-10 would have to do with if i drop leone/urena and/or put down rj alvarez/drury. if beltre’s price gets too high i could take the pick, so at most 11 players would be added using 42.848 mil. If i don’t keep beltre i’d have to grab a CI from the 2nd list
CI – colabello, yunel, yogt, dan murphy, c.hernandez, espinosa, howard, napoli, matt duffy, marwin, v-mart, pearce, sandoval, laroche
in FEB when regular FA bidding goes on.
Makes sense
@Grey: of that list i’m guessing duffy gets biggest contract (if no beltre), for some years, but really he doesn’t hit that many homers either. i need homers with that lineup for sure. werth looms (my god if he doesn’t produce again, gets hurt again i’ll really wanna giloolly him) as possible need. pham probably a good longer term investment (cheaply).
how much you thinking is biggest bid i should make on kaz/lackey/chen/hammel. i’ll go from the biggest (kaz) downward
Start at $5 mill
hey Grey, after learning that in hockey Fantrax will add correct positions (say a guy came up in minors/prospect at position X but in NHL plays position Y) and getting them in the middle of the night to add 3 players to the baseball database from Mike’s lists, i thought, wow, this company is so good it’s as if it’s run by Grey. So, do you run/own Fantrax?
Ha, nope, I don’t
Have you seen a documentary called “the seven five” Watched it on showtime the other day. Pretty good. It’s about the very very very corrupt Brooklyn police of the 7 5.
Nah haven’t seen it… You watch Making A Murderer yet?
@Grey: Yo man….just binge watched the whole thing. Unreal.
So upsetting and brilliant… For the first time in my life I signed one of those petition.org things for them
@Grey: Definitey, staggering the amount of inconsistencies in the case and was still found guilty. Heartbreaking seeing his nephew charged, I just don’t get it. Terribly wrong.
The nephew stuff was heart wrenching… Colburn called in the jeep license! What?!
@Grey: 2 days before it was found!! Ahh, she was stabbed, raped, throat cut in the bedroom, where’s the blood?? Shot in the garage and still no blood! Key and bullet weren’t found until a week later after so many searches. The car found by the only searcher with a camera and she found it immediately in that whole huge lot. Why is their blood and hair in the car anyways if she was killed inside and dragged into the backyard to be burned? The tampered blood vial!!! There is something with the brother and ex boyfriend, they are so so shady. The deleted voicemails?!…all that and the worst was the police forcing that obviously false confession from the nephew. So sick.
Gotta love the sheriff who still didn’t believe Avery was innocent of the rape… “That’s what the DNA says, I don’t know.”
@Grey: Bunch of morons. Lenk is super corrupt…I don’t know who I hate more, Theresa’s brother or Brendan’s first lawyer
I was trying like hell to find anything that wasn’t shown in the movie that made Avery seem more culpable, and only thing I found that wasn’t mentioned was he called and asked for Theresa to come out that day… But I don’t see how that makes him a killer
Dynasty. Is D Santana an everyday player? Like, forever?
Thanks Grey.
Unlikely
@Grey:Sorry. Domingo not Danny. Or is that “unlikely” meant for Domingo?
He’s a starter
Grey,
In an OBP keeper league which side do you prefer
Sano and Archer
for
Arenado
Thanks
Arenado
What about Matt Duffy? Wouldn’t he have 2B and 3B?
Did he play 10 games at 2nd?
Ah, gotcha. Now I know when making off season trades. Thanks. Any idea when the 2016 season goes live on yahoo?
Mid-Feb, prolly
Do you know the rules with yahoos eligibility? Last yr Machado became SS eligible because he started 6 or 7 games there. Will he still be eligible there in 2016? I think Sano will be 3rd base eligible if that’s the case.
@Funny Name: And would you put Machado top 5 with the SS eligibility?
I don’t think he has SS eligibility for 2016
It’s five games started in season for Yahoo, ten games the previous season
Nats must not have much faith in Trea Turner for this year especially since they’ve been connected with a bunch of MI’s this offseason?
They’re in position to win now, they’re not about to give a rookie the job out of spring
Anyone know what happened to Bryant’s eligibility in the OF ( 19 games)? At season’s end he had both 3B and OF. I know this for reasonable certainty, of course as a Bryant owner I keep tabs on important features such as that. MLB must have reviewed the records and taken one game back, hence the 19 games in the OF instead of 20. Did anyone else notice this?
Bryant is in the article
happy day, likely most off work der.
Deep 20 team keeper league. Who do you keep? Alex Gordon, George Springer, Wil Myers, Wong, Buxton, Yelich.
Not sure if I should keep Gordon over the youth on this team. What say you?
How many can you keep?
@Grey: I can keep five.
Then no Wong, assuming Gordon signs
@Grey: Thanks, Grey. Happy holidays!
You too!
Merry Christmas, Grey, Mr. FOH & everyone else.
Cheers!
Merry Xmas!
Grey,
Which minor leaguer would you rather have and why:
Carson Fullmer CWS
Sean Manaea OAK
Manaea
Grey
Why him over Fullmer
Cause he’s better
ok thanks grey. Happy holidays to you
You too!
@Scott Kimmel: i didn’t even know manea was on OAK town now, but yep, better.
6×6 13 team roto AVG, OBP, R, HR, RBI, SB. Conforto or piscotty both short and long term? Merry Christmas Grey.
Conforto for both… Xmas!
Most valuable non-elite multi-position guys? I’m thinking Kang, Harrison, Norris, Kelly Johson, Trumbo, Lawrie, anybody else?
Elite = All the Cubs, Posey.
What, you don’t like Schwarber?
@Grey: oh i like him. I just don’t see him lasting to late or even mid rounds like these other guys. These multi eligible guys are great for daily streaming flexibility.
What about Swiss Army Knife Holt?
How long until Sano gets positional eligibility… And do they really think a 260 lb dude is a good idea in OF?
They’re not going to outright bench Plouffe, so he’ll need an injury to Mauer or Plouffe to play 3rd
I like to target Catcher eligibles who will primarily play other positions. Only Schwarber is listed here, but he’ll be long gone by the time I’m comfortable picking him. The only other one I can think of is Jaso, who Pirates just signed to play 1st on the long side of a platoon. Is there anyone else who fits this category?
@Jeff P: Posey could play more 1st this year, but no one comes to mind outside of this list
Cuddyer retired!
He sure did, but if he were to play in a softball league, he has multi-position eligibility
MERRY CHRISTMAS from Ireland!
Enjoy yourself, be safe!
Thanks, MP! You too!
OBP league.Pollack or Blackmon for 2016? Windows(10 and 8.something) really doesn’t like Razzball. Laptop and desktop are unusable. I’m reduced to using my Android phone.
Merry XMas from the Land of Lincoln!!
@Shill Team 6: Merry Xmas! Pollock
Grey,
Which side do you prefer? Obp league
Sale and Xander
For
Springer and Kluber
Thanks!
@Don’t look now: Springer
Can you go into how position eligibility works?
So Schwarber will be catcher eligible all year next year even if he doesn’t take a single pitch behind home plate correct?
Also, any player who hits 10 games at a position will then gain whatever eligibility, correct?
I didn’t see you rank sano, but probably because he only played 3b, so my assumption is he has 3b eligibility next year? Trying to decide if I want to keep him or not.
Happy holidays. I’ll put some extra spice in my egg naug
@Onemoretime: I play in a espn league so pretty sure its 10 games
@Onemoretime: Sano doesn’t have ten games played at any position… He could be eligible at only UTIL… Happy holidays!
How does position eligibility work in espn? I thought it was 20 games played the previous season to qualify, or 10 games played in the current season…or am i getting it confused with something else?
@danny almonte: No you got it correct for ESPN.
Hey Grey,
Looking forward to the rankings. Keeper question. 8 Team H2H point based league and can keep 15 players as long as you like. My OF consists of Harper, Pollock, Carlos Gonzalez. I have Machado & Sano at 3B. Would you offer Machado for Stanton?
Thanks,
@Mike Schwab: Trade Sano. He won’t be playing much 3B. Probably.
@Mike Schwab: I’d hold
finally caught up with all baseball posts, adding all those football/hockey leagues and comishing some has eaten the crap out of time. tag time tomorrow in 30 man roto (but done with divisions like real life, we have overall standings but you make playoffs in how you do in your division/conference) 6×6 with holds/OPS added. 25 active roster and 25 minor slots (goes up to 30 this year, which i believe will cap it, draft starts jan 5th). 100 million budgets. Assume all contracts are minimum (.4 million) and this year ending contract unless noted. 7 BN spots, usually i find it’s optimal to have 2-3 for hitters rest for SP to make up to 6 SP or so total, and also have 6 RP that start every day (unless i have more than 3 SP go at same time).
C – D’Arnaud (2017)
CI – Drury (2019)
CI – Smoak 1.347 mil
MI – Segura 6.4 mil
MI –
OF – A-Jax 6.4 mil
OF – Altherr (2019)
OF – Leonys 3.1
UT – E.Rosario (2019), no longer counts as MI anymore.
SP – Sale 6.425
SP – Liriano 11.5
SP – Quintana 6.4
RP – Melancon 6.421
RP – Fien
RP – Leone 1.15 (2017)
P Z.Davies (2019)
P R.J. Alvarez (2019)
P Urena (2018)
So i need about 2 more SP at least. 3 solid or better ones.
The kinds of tags we get are one Restricted tag in which i get to match the highest bid or get a draft pick(s) depending on size of contract (last year got screwed by matching Werth for 12 mil per for two years, three days later he just happens to mention he’s injured and needs shoulder surgery, ruining at least 2/3 of 2015 for himself and me, still on hook for 6 mil of that now); also one Franchise tag in which i pay exactly what a guy makes in real life. Also a third tag, which can be of either type. Depth charts this early are notoriously worthless of course, but Drury/Alvarez/Leone would be in minors according to them. I could put both of the first two into minors, but i’d have to cut a prospect to do it (i have some weak ones that i could do this with). Leone can’t be put down, i overpaid for him slightly and if i want to cut him i’d be on hook for half of 1.15 for each of this year and next (or all of 1.15 this year). He was awesome in 2014 however. Options for tags are
1. beltre (16 million, or very much likely cheaper if i restrict, and if his hand thing is fine he’d be much better than in 2015)
2. alcides (5.25, or ? if i restrict)
3. segura (franchising would likely make him cheaper than 6.4, but it’s unknown at this point too)
4. a-jax (since he has no team and made 7.7 last year it’s hard to tell, but if he gets a job and starts restricting him now would very likely save me money, franchising probably awful idea, could cost more)
5. uribe (made 6.5 last year in real life, no team, likely non starter, restricting would be cheap)
6. coghlan (was big value last year and MI/OF, but no role now)
7. chirinos
8. furbush/liam hendriks (would be cheap no matter which, hendriks really sick FIP of 2.15, currently slotted as 7th inning man at OAK, furbush about same role)
9. c.anderson/j.chavez (both would be cheap either tag, BUT no worthwhile role really yet)
10. ERV santana (way too expensive to franchise at 13.5 million)
Sounding about like restricting Beltre (hoping it costs less than 10 or maybe just take a pick for full rebuild), franchising Alcides for 5.5, and then an unknown third (franchising and hoping if segura is only slightly above his last year .534 real life money?)?
Ah the christmas tag rush to start our 2016 fantasy season. so GD early this league goes, and then we do nearly nothing important when normal leagues do all their important preseason stuff. it’s annoying, as most prospect stuff isn’t even out yet (Mike is 1/2 way through his prospect lists, ahead of many other sources)
@goodfold2: very important pt, i have 41.657 left not including my current roster.
@goodfold2: First three makes sense
@Grey: any idea what’s normal for an arb player to get when he made .534 last year and has just under 3 years of service time (segura)?
Nah, not sure… Maybe 2.5 mil
@Grey: ok, so it comes down to whether or not saving nearly 4 million (which is exactly the average price of a player, 100 mil for 25 players) or so is better than grabbing a cheap extra player like hendriks (made around half mil last year, raise is probably near 2.5 or so though). whole pt of that would only be if we are wrong about segura and he’ll actually make more than 6.4, or just to grab a useful bullpen guy for pretty cheap. 7th inning or better players are quite useful in this league, not so easy to obtain like even in 16-20 team leagues.
Segura’s not gonna make more than 6.4, I wouldn’t think at least… You gotta be able to grab at least one cheap 7th inning or later bullpen guy… I’d go Segura
@goodfold2: nevermind, i just found our our rule is that an arb player gets paid his last year money, so i save 6 million for SURE franchising him. that’s solid.
Oh, nice
@Grey: with 6 million i can grab anywhere from 2-5 IF i either guess right or those depth charts now are more valid than not. i’ve found very cheap gems simply from only say 2 other owners bidding anything on them. they just can’t have high holds totals or be established names already, those ones go for bigger money, even if in fact they aren’t very good (think joba types)
Ah, nice
@Grey: of course of those “solid” bullpen grabs i thought 1 year ago leone at 3 years at 1.15 was smart. it appeared to be at the time.
Bullpen arms just come and go so often each year
Thanks. What’s the best way to find this list in the future?
I think Bryant is the most intriguing name on the list. In an 5 outfielder league, is he a #1 or #2 outfielder?
Merry Christmas.
@Packers: seems like it could be listed in “tools” but i don’t think they’ve done that in previous years yet.
