So, I didn’t expect much from this Patreon podcast, but, honestly, waking up Lenny Dykstra mid-nap to hear him say Ron Darling sucks d**k, well…I have to be honest here, this podcast is in the pantheon of nonsense. So, we get Lenny Dykstra on the show, for, I don’t know, maybe 15 minutes. He’s in the middle of napping-slash-having sex and he’s also very, very angry with Ron Darling, but, other than that, it was a totally normal conversation where I say 1993 Phillies players names and Lenny says whether or not they did drugs with him. Ya know, standard stuff.

Then Donkey Teeth and I dive into how my grandfather picked up a girl in the last week during a pandemic and she’s now moved in with him. Again, this is normal stuff. He’s only 92 years old with more game than any of you. Next up (this is likely totally out of order), we talk about my love for Normal People on Hulu. There’s no spoilers to say I think it’s the best show of 2020. It’s at least better than the shitshow that is the world. Finally, we discuss MLB’s plans to return and Blake Snell’s channeling of Vanilla Ice during contract negotiations. Maybe Vanilla should’ve had Blake Snell talk to Suge Knight about Ice, Ice Baby song rights. Who’s to say? Then we pimp the YouTube fantasy football show that Donkey and Boof started. Bless them and everyone who listens to this Patreon podcast. It’s five dollars per month to sign up, and every bit helps right now. Also, you can help us by subscribing to our Ad-free site. Enjoy the show!

    Grey!!!!

    Literally, the best podcast EVER!!!

    a. So, NAILED it! He’s not gonna last very long. If I were him I would die of corona at least end it as a hero. And the vitriol launched at Ron Darling – I mean he did have a point, how DID Ron Darling make a 12-year career of himself.

    b. Eagerly awaiting the mind-blowing whatever that’s coming from Lenny. Eagerly! So happy John Kruk was not on cocaine!

    c. Agreed on tooth cleaning in the pandemic era being a total no! Was it your 6-month check up call? Crazy coincidence. Sorry, DT had to suffer that dentist trip in the same pandemic era.

    d. ‘Gas-meter reader man mentality’ is something afflicting many similar people and job areas. The lack of mask is also nuts! We get similar reactions from our dog Simba every time someone rings our doorbell, calls me on the phone (fortunately only my wife calls me, he knows, so ergo ipso facto he knows that my wife is about to arrive!) or something gets bleeped out on TV. He’s learning, but still goes nuts.

    e. Lastly on Lenny’s NOB comment, it’s like a combination of nap and ‘Nam. Or he was talking to his friend and telling her ‘nob’. Otherwise, almost 15 minutes of unintelligible gibberish from Dykstra. Bravo!

    f. MLB quote of the day for June 12, 1990

‘Part of what makes you great as a young player can hurt you at the end of your career, in terms of you need a certain amount of ego, a certain amount of arrogance to be able to play well and to push yourself and trick yourself into thinking you’re better than you really are.’

David Brian Cone. Led the MLB twice in Ks and famous for pitching a perfect game July 18, 1999. I’ll bet he has some dirt on Lenny.

    Cheers,

      B. Think I mentioned 5 of the most popular Phils from that team, not sure who he’s going to out — but I’m sure he’ll out someone!

      C. Yeah, I mean, if it’s emergency, you do what you have to do, but teeth cleaning? Really? Now?

      D. Totally, that is like the last job we want going around to every house sneezing all over everyone

      E. Haha, thanks! Is that what he was saying? Still not exactly sure, but it was amazing

        Grey!!!

        a. I saw this Japanese researchers’ video of how ‘a virus’ (could be corona, could be any virus really) gets spread around from person to person in an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast. The virus was colored and with special heat-seeking goggles you could see where the virus was and how it spread over a table of four who weren’t really like spreading it around, just eating, laughing and generally poorly acting in the video. Scary AF. So, definitely from now on in any all-you-can-eat buffet’s I’m

        1. avoiding the crowd;
        2. avoiding the fat boy with the wheezy cough;
        3. maybe ordering room service a la carte straight from the kitchen (?);
        4. wearing them goggles if I can get a hold of a pair.

        b. Yeah, I think it was what he was saying. Y’all were asking were you taking a nap, did we wake you from your nap and then after he woke up he kept referring to it as a ‘NOB’ and most certainly not a ‘nap’ when he was clearly just waking up from a stupid nap. No comment on the 5 amoxicillin/day. That’s whack, we need a confirmation from our in-house doctor, I’m not qualified.

I honestly thought it was a scene from someone who had just been on the losing end of an 8-round TKO with 1965 Muhammad Ali. He was on two planes – with y’all and with the woman whose voice was definitely heard – and was unable to put two coherent thoughts together. Can’t wait for ‘The Lenny Dykstra Story, part 3’ next week.

        Smart man!

    • baby seal says:
      (link)

Would especially try to get those “talented setup men” with otherwise great ratios. Their value goes up so, so much. And if the closer goes down, gets traded, performs poorly, etc. — you now have the closer!

      Guys that come to mind…

      Pressly (obviously)
      Lugo
Gallegos (should get some saves too)
      Smith (ditto)
      Hudson (ditto)
      Pagan (will get a couple)
Harvey (think he takes the closer job eventually)
      Stammen
2-3 guys each from the Rays’ and Yanks’ pens
      Andrew Miller (should be cheap)
      Bummer
      Will Harris
      Buttrey
…. you get the idea — see link below

Guys a little more off the radar that I like:

      Duffey (MIN)
Gant (could also get some Ws!)
May (not *too* off the radar)
Wick (should get some saves and will take Kimbrel’s spot when he inevitably blows up again)
Crick (Pirates, so don’t go too ham)
      Barlow
      Bass

As Grey said, the point is, there are so many guys to choose from and there’s really no reason to waste premium draft capital on top-tier closers! Just make sure the guys you get will have awesome ratios.

Here’s a very good link that has HOLDS data: https://www.foxsports.com/mlb/stats?season=2019&category=PITCHING+RELIEF&group=1&sort=7&time=0&pos=0&qual=0&sortOrder=0&splitType=128&page=1&statID=0

Hello, just wondering. How much do man crushes on players hurt you in fantasy. Asking because in drafts and mocks there are 3 players that seem to make all my teams. They are Swanson, Solak and Ian Happ. I just feel they all can far exceed draft prices and I cant get enough of them.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I love those three players too, so I can’t hate on you drafting them…Assuming the price is right

    • baby seal says:
      (link)

Pretty much can’t hurt you too much if all those guys you love are going after pick 200. Also helps in an odd way that if the player goes down or sucks, then you know you need to make the same move a bunch of times…

IMO, it mostly depends on how much you love the player. There should only be a few guys you REALLY LOVE that can be on any team. You don’t want like 10 of those kinda guys. You also don’t want to have too many of them in the top-100.

IMO, if you feel VERY strongly about certain guys, then just put your money where your mouth is and take them every chance you get—at least that’s how I think about it.

e.g. I really like Bieber and try to get him everywhere. I’d rather have the upside on all my teams and not worry so much about being wrong. If I’m right, then I could have a really HUGE year. Worth it! In the case of a pitcher, especially a top-tier one, make sure it’s someone you feel *veryyyyyyy* confident that their injury risk is very, very low.

As a counterexample, I’m not as high on Flaherty, so if I were to randomly decide to “mix it up” w/ him a few times instead of Biebs, and that doesn’t work out — IDK about you — but I’d be pretty pissed at myself for making a “sub-optimal choice” just for the sake of diversification. Totally different situation if you like them equally – then you SHOULD mix it up. Subtle but important difference!

There have been a lot of studies on portfolio diversification in finance. The short version: After about 10-20 securities (forget the exact number), the marginal improvement on diversification basically becomes negligible. At that point, ie for the 21st stock in your portfolio, what ends up mattering is really just the individual risk of the stock itself. Doesn’t matter much that you added your first telecom company if the company itself just sucks.

Obviously, I have no idea how well all of that applies to fantasy baseball. However, I’d honestly be genuinely surprised if the math were really all that different.

The proper analogy to me would be like, deciding if you want to add AAPL to your portfolio, but you’re undecided because you already have a bunch of tech stocks. Assuming you’re already properly diversified, then you are fine. What will impact your returns the most at that point is really just the marginal change AAPL provides – i.e., whether or not they beat their next earning’s print. So if the stock goes up 10% and you hadn’t bought because “I already own GOOGL and FB,” well, believe me, you’re not going to be a happy camper! If it goes down on the print, then it very likely had nothing to do w/ having owned GOOGL and FB already. If tech stocks go down together, then you should already have had something else in your portfolio to counteract that scenario. Adding APPL doesn’t change that. And finally, the analogy for having too many of the same guys in the top-100 you love on all your squads, is like buying AAPL, but making it like 30% of your portfolio, rather than 1/21th or 5% of it.

Hope that helps… love writing about this sort of stuff!

Hey G, long time no chat!

Have you read this piece before? https://maxsportingstudio.com/an-introduction-to-pdrc/

Thought it was REALLY GOOD! What I like about it is not that he’s trying to predict DRC+ or whatever.

I really liked how he thoroughly explained his process to create a predictive model, why he chose those component inputs, and the graphs he provided to give more context, etc.

FWIW, his number one player to bust out this year is Swanson. A lot of guys you like in his top 10! (Small aside, this is not too important right now, but I was chatting w/ him on Twitter for some ideas to improve the model. He doesn’t have a park adjustment which is probably the biggest issue with it right now, IMO. Had a couple other ideas for smaller tweaks to improve it, too.)

Got me thinking, maybe we could create something like that if you’re down? We don’t necessarily need to predict a metric, either. But it would be good to have some “training data” to test against. Obviously, I’d do most of the leg work. You could just help me w/ the fun part: brainstorming the inputs, and maybe figuring out the weights, to some extent (the weights will certainly have a trial-and-error component to it that I can handle).

We could call it something like, ‘The Albright Model of Excellency’ or ‘Albright’s Perfect Player Evaluation, 60% of the time, it works every time’ … you get the idea. I’ll leave the naming of it up to your unparalleled creative mind.

What do you say?? Not sure when I’ll have time for it. But definitely something I want to try!!

I certainly have the stats, modeling, data, etc. background to do it… how can you say no to that proposal??
