Week Three, still no baseball. Grey and I are just as bored as everyone else, so we decided to bring aboard our good friend Harold Dieterle, Celebrity Chef, Top Chef season one winner, and edible technician. We talk food, weed, baseball, quarantine, and discover the real meaning of friendship. Later in the show we talk a little Tiger King and how we’re all dealing with the coming apocalypse. It’s another week of the Razzball Quarantine Podcast!

Haven’t listened yet — sure it is awesome as usual…. catching up on Grey’s old posts now that I missed while the world was burning.

This is why our curve still looks like a teenager’s stiffy after opening PHub dot com for the first time… posted on 3/12 for perspective. Wonder what that moron is saying now.

Ok, commenting on the actual podcast now… some serious conspiracy theories in this one! Get your tinfoil hats on!

Some interesting perspectives, but I don’t think you just get TJS on a whim because the season might be shorter than usual. Sure, maybe Thor’s elbow was barking and it seemed like a decent idea to take care of it. But I don’t think the teams have any more info about the current situation than we do. Seems more likely that something actually *did* happen, and maybe his agent got in his ear about how the timeline could play out and be beneficial for him. Also, BVW really NEEDS him. No way the Mets and their infinite ineptitude thought this was a good idea… or did they? ROFL

Then, the podcast takes a SHARP turn into how to make your own drugs at home, lol. I was going to ask if Ralph has a PHD in drugs, but seems like all of you are pretty well-versed on how to make to make weed gummies. Didn’t realize I was subscribed to a marijuana baking podcast!

I don’t do drugs just weed! Haha.

The Thor thing is interesting, I think there were a lot of guys throwing with tears in their UCLs (Sale, Thor, Munoz) and took previous advice about surgery. It’s not an isolated incident, there’s been a big bump considering no one is playing.

The teams definitely know more than us, you do realize these owners are well connected billionaires. There’s a real chance we get 80 games or no season at all, add in the looming CBA battle and we may not have baseball until Next June!

It’s pessimistic, but I don’t think it’s a conspiracy. There’s no overt act here or laws being broken. I hope I’m wrong BTW.

Haha, hey Ralph! You know I was mostly kidding! Just trying to be funny, I guess.

You were super knowledgeable about how to make the weed products and the different instruments involved… was entertaining.

The teams and owners have every incentive to play. They may know more in the sense of, e.g. what the commissioner is thinking, but they literally do not know any more than us RE if we start June 1, August 1, or not at all. There just simply isn’t enough data out there to make an educated guess, and more time needs to pass.

But *I think* it’s safe to say they will try to make it work, considering the amount of $ on the line. I have zero idea why that wouldn’t be the case, and I don’t think you’ve made a convincing argument otherwise. Follow the $ and incentives when in doubt…

        Later

PS. The only thing that really sounded like a conspiracy was the Thor stuff. The other items are just pessimistic, agreed.

Oh yeah, knew you were kidding! All good.

I think they know more specifics on how potentially risking exposing fans and players in two months will look. WIll the model be perfect? No, of course not, but they have access to people who create models and projections and I’m sure it’s applied to this.

As for the cost they started yesterday laying off large swaths of minor league players, they’ve cut the draft from 40 rounds to potentially 5, and that’s before we factor in overhead. No gates mean no concessions, but it also means not having to buy more supplies, or run the stadium or pay a large number of vendors employees to run the operation on game day. These owners aren’t taking the bath you would expect. Especially when you look at the valuations of these teams and the annuity like return from these teams.

I hope I’m wrong, but the dollars are there if you dig. Are they losing? Yes, but is it enough to hurt them?

It’s not hard to have access to those kinds of models — we are doing it daily at my first — using multiple statistical techniques! Reporters will get their hands on this sort of stuff. People who want to know will find out.

I certainly don’t think they are taking a bath, at least not yet. We’re still a bit too early IMO to say anything definitive about concessions or gates.

I spoke to my Yankee sales rep on the phone earlier this week, who proactively reached out. Obviously, that’s just good business. But she said they haven’t fired anyone yet, they are WFH, and awaiting further instructions from MLB.

We know most of the money comes from TV anyways. That’s the big one.

PS. Found you on a couple podcasts recently. Trying to hear more of your analysis! I like your take on players and I’m thirsty as a m’fker right now.
