Hyun-Jin Ryu takes the mound in San Diego today. While he doesn’t sport eye-popping statistics, he’s been solid all year and this match-up is too good to pass up at a $9,000 price tag. Ryu ranks fifth overall on the Stream-o-Nator at a $16 value. This season he has a 7.55 K/9 and a 2.00 BB/9. This match-up against the Padres is what makes him today’s lede. The Padres are striking out against left-handed pitching at a 22.5% clip. That’s the 8th highest strikeout percentage against southpaws in the majors. San Diego also ranks dead last against lefties with a 70 wRC+ and .268 wOBA. Ryu is a a great value today and pairs well with one of the high-dollar arms on the schedule.

Masahiro Tanaka, SP: $11,900 – I was surprised Tanaka didn’t eclipse the $12K mark given how dominant he’s been this season. It’s hard to argue against an arm striking out over ten batters per nine while walking less than two. He’ll draw Baltimore at home and struck out ten Orioles the last time they faced off. He’s SON’s fave pitcher today at a $24 value.

Giancarlo Stanton, OF: $5,600 – Stanton will have the platoon advantage against Niese today and has had some success against the left-hander in his career. The big man is 7-for-21 with two homers against the Met hurler. Stanton has been a beast all year, but he’s been especially good at Marlins Park where he boasts a 209 wRC+ this season against lefties.

David Ortiz, 1B: $4,700 – Let’s have fun with a small sample size, shall we? In six plate appearances against today’s starter Tommy Milone, Ortiz has three hits and two walks. All three of those hits were home runs. Hell’s bells.

Carlos Gomez, OF: $5,400 – The Brewers/Rockies series has been a bloodbath as expected. Today should be no different with a line of 11, the highest of any game on the schedule. Gomez should get in on the action with the platoon advantage against Tyler Matzek, who ranks dead last on the Stream-o-Nator this afternoon.

Starlin Castro, SS: $4,500 – Castro has been on fire lately, hitting .360/.410/.675 with three home runs and 12 runs batted in over his last ten games. I’m going to continue to ride the hot hand here despite the high price tag.

I’m Only Happy When It Rains

There’s a 30% chance of storms in Cincinnati, Colorado, St. Louis, Minnesota and Chicago. Minnesota looks like the riskiest play.
