The anxiety is starting to settle in as we approach the 3rd to last Sunday of the regular season. We are all frantically streaming pitchers in our season long league playoffs. We are also managing our fantasy football lineups. This time of year is always the most exciting yet terrifying because we have so many things going on at the same time. If you’re like me, you’re trying to squeeze every last penny out of daily baseball before it goes dormant for 6 months.  I know baseball is a long season however two weeks after the season ends I still check my lineup because I start to miss it. Alright, enough doom and gloom lets move onto today’s slate. There are 3 pitchers over $20k pitching today and Sonny Gray is not one of them. He comes in at a cool $18,400. Sonny gives you a bit of salary relief and the upside at this price. Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, Sonny has only faced Baltimore once this season. He shut them out in 5 2/3’s. The Yankees have been letting him pitch right around 100 pitches, so he has a real shot to walk away with a win and quality start. I said it yesterday the Yankees own the Orioles this year and have been limiting their production this week.

Say it ain’t so, the Indians win streak has ended at 22 games. That was an exciting run and it looks like the final 3 weeks are going to be tight. I want to thank VictoriaB for filling in for me last week while I was prepping for Hurricane Irma. Luckily, Tampa was spared from any major damage. Moving on, Madison Bumgarner gets a delicious matchup against the Diamondbacks at home today.  MadBum sports a 3.00 ERA vs the Diamondbacks this year. Further, he has 25 K’s in 21 innings vs. them. The ownership is going  to be lower on him this week given his struggles in his last 2 starts. I’m assuming Carrasco will be the highest owned player today. With that being said I think the value lies in MadBum today at$9,200.

We’re about to enter that weird time of the year where baseball and football meet. It’s almost as if your parenting both DFS baseball and football, trying to show both equal attention. Deep down you know you have a favorite but you don’t want to let it show out of fear of the other one finding out. I’m a dog dad so I know the struggles of showing equal attention to both pups, but I can guarantee you every parent has a favorite whether or not they’d like to admit it, right mom? I wish my mom read my write ups. I’ll let you in on a secret, I like baseball more than football. Sorry for taking up your whole Sunday with a long intro but without further ado I would like to present Luke Weaver as my lede today. Sale and Severino are off the main slate today, which is a huge relief (salary relief). I think you must get cute today and play Weaver. My man crush is starting to formulate for Weaver because of his high K rate. Weaver goes up against a weak Giants offense and is in the pitcher friendly park. Weaver has 20 k’s in his last 2 starts with 2 earned runs. It’s hard to gauge his ownership today because you have some good arms going today but they are all more expensive than Weaver. Weaver’s price today is $17,600.

Don’t look now, but we have 1 month and 10 days left of regular season baseball. What a scary thought! I’m sorry for ruining your Sunday brunch. I’ll turn your attention to my prized possession today, Brad Peacock. I think he has the best matchup today against the Athletics at home. He’s faced the A’s twice already this year posting a 2.19 ERA with 18 k’s in 12 innings. It’s looking to be another high strikeout day for Lord Peacock. He has struggled in his last 3 starts which I’m hoping might lead to lower ownership. I think what makes Peacock a great play today is his price at $17,700. He really allows you to pay up for some bats today.

Can I have all Razzball readers knock on wood prior to reading this article? Thank you! I don’t want to jinx Kenta Maeda who is putting together a great and under the radar season. Maeda struggled earlier this year with control and an injury. For a while the Dodgers were unsure what they were going to do with him, they had him work out of the pen for a few weeks. Naturally, Maeda came back to life and started dealing. FantasyDraft has some crazy high prices for the elite pitchers today and this pick at $16,000 seems like a no brainer. Maeda’s ERA at home is under 3 and his k/9 is 8.64. He also gets a favorable matchup against the depleted Padres. Unfortunately I think everyone will be on this pick today just because there is not much downside to his matchup today.

Don’t get it twisted, ok I got it twisted. I decided to change things up and switch to recommending an offensive player as my lede today. I’ll admit it’s been tough to pick pitchers this season and I need to shake things up. Let’s move on to my pick of the day Andrew McCutchen.  I had McCutchen in my write up last Sunday when he went off for 3 home runs. I’m not expecting him to repeat that last performance, however, I’m banking on him to hit a least one today. The price tag is steep at $10,000 but he is the 2nd best hitter against left handed pitching this season behind Nolan Arenado. McCutchen only has has 18 home runs on the year and 8 of them are from lefties. To expand further on this less than a 1/3 of his at bats have been against lefties this year. He is batting .325 against lefties this season. What I’m saying is don’t be the guy without Cutch in your lineup today.

As a millennial, I’m too young to know what Monty Python is, all I know is that I’ve heard the name before. My Google search led me to a couple of YouTube videos of skits from the show. It turns out it was a British comedy show from the 60’s and 70’s dubbed as the “Beatles of comedy”. I got a little sidetracked this morning with my writeup as I was glued to the skits. Now that I’ve shown my age, or lack thereof, let’s get to the article. Jordan Montgomery is a high risk, high reward pitcher today going up against the Rays. The Yankees bullpen is absolutely disgusting so Monty only needs to go 6 innings strong and the bullpen will take over from there. The Ray’s offense has been awfully inconsistent and there is no telling when they’ll strike like a python. History shows that they are among one of the worst teams when facing left-handed pitching as far as average and k% go. Monty’s price is discounted at $15,600 and has a high upside today. The key to this start will be getting through the first inning quickly. Monty has an opportunity to rack up the K’s against this offense. Since the Ray’s offense is so unpredictable I would only start Monty in GPP formats today.

It’s the dead of summer and there is nothing better to do here in Tampa other than go to the beach. It’s forbidden to wear jeans during the months of July and August as the temperature rarely dips below 90 degrees. Earlier this week there was a shark attack in the Miami area where a guy was bit on both legs. However, today I’m receiving alerts that there will be a shark attack in the San Diego area. Today Jeff Samardzija takes the mound against Padres in San Diego. This will likely be a favorite just because he is going up against the Padres and that seems to be the trend with every DFS player. Shark has not been impressive at all this season. His home/away splits are not impressive in regards to ERA. One stat that he has consistently maintained is his 9.69 k/9. I think Shark is a must play today given the pitcher friendly park and pitcher friendly lineup.

When I was a kid, it was routine to go thrift shopping with my mother every Sunday morning (queue the Thrift Shop song by Macklemore). My mother has a niche for finding deals and bargains. I reflect back and look to use some of those skills to find the pitcher I’ll be pairing with Clayton Kershaw in my cash games. I look no further to Trevor Cahill. This will be Cahill’s second start since coming off the DL with shoulder issues. Prior to Cahill’s injury he was having a career year. I was a bit worried watching his rehab starts coming back from the shoulder injury but he handled the Indians in the 4 innings he pitched. With guys coming off injury there is always the risk of getting pulled early because their pitch count is limited. The Padres allowed him to go 85 pitches in his first start back. I’m not worried about the pitch count given he faces a deflated Phillies lineup who is amongst the worst versus right handed pitching this season. Cahill is the bargain of the day at $15,300. The Padres are the favorite on the road today and I will be pairing Cahill with Kershaw in all cash games.

Justin Smoak’s splits are so good you’d think he was a gymnastics major in college. I’m not going to lie, I tried searching for his college major but came up empty. However, I did find out that he is only 5 days older than me, so we’re practically brothers. Back to the splits, currently Smoak is batting .381 with 5 home runs against left handed pitchers. In total, Smoak is tied for 5th in home runs with 22. I’m a little afraid to pick on Pomeranz today since that did not work out for me earlier this week. The Blue Jays hit lefties well, so there is a chance that Pomeranz may get hit early. Unfortunately, there is no discount for Smoak due to his hot start to the season but this is an ideal matchup for him. Smoak is $9,600 on Fantasy Draft.  Now, for the rest of the picks:

It’s Sunday morning and somebody must make some tough decisions at the pitcher position today. I’m not overly thrilled with the pitching matchups today and struggled to piece together my favorites. DFSBot is showing some love to sir Brandon McCarthy who has been pitching extremely well over the past few weeks. He gets a difficult matchup against the Rockies though this game is being played in LA. The Rockies home/road split confirms that the Rockies bats are not intimidating when they are away from Coors. McCarthy is nothing but a safe play to score 20+ points. He won’t get you many K’s but he’ll limit the hits and walks and should walk away with the win. McCarthy makes for the best starter in double ups today due to his consistency at home. His price is also a modest $15,000.

Happy Father’s Day to all Yu dads out there and all Yu dads that don’t know Yu are a dad. Today’s article is being brought to you by Yu Darvish ($23,400). Darvish is not the best pitcher on the board today however he comes in $2,600 cheaper than Robbie Ray. If you can afford to put Ray in your lineups today go ahead and do so. Alright, Darvish takes the mound against a struggling Mariners offense. My confidence in Darvish really stems from his outing earlier this week. He looked flawless against the Astros which is arguably the best offense if you take away the park factor. He’s going to need more than 4 k’s today if he’s going to meet his value. My only concern is that Yu is pitching at home where he sports at 3.30 ERA. DFSBot has Darvish as the 3rd best pitcher today and is projected 6.6 k’s. There have only been 2 out of 14 starts where he didn’t make it to 6 innings this season. Darvish is extremely conservative with his pitches which is why he’s successful on the mound. Get him in your lineups today and hopefully he logs 7+ k’s today.
