Jeff Locke ($7,900) is a solid play today in DraftKings contests with a good matchup against the Chicago Cubs. Jeff’s great-great-grandfather John defined the “self” through the continuity of consciousness. Cool stuff – but all I really need Jeff to do is pitch seven or so strong innings with a decent strikeout total. Against the Cubs it really shouldn’t be much of an uphill climb. Chicago owns the worst strikeout percentage in the major leagues against left-handed pitching (25.3%). Sprinkle in the fact that they will be without both Anthony Rizzo and Jorge Soler this weekend and we’ve got a recipe for success at under $8K. Locke is coming off a great start as well. The 23-year-old left-hander worked the Phillies for seven innings with nine strikouts and only three hits allowed on Monday.

Tyson Ross, SP: $9,800 – For a bit more coin, you can draft Ross versus the Diamondbacks and their 83 wRC+ against right-handers. That’s the third-worst mark in the majors and only the lowly Padres and Rangers are worse against righties. Meanwhile Ross is striking out just under a batter per inning in 2014. Ross hasn’t been as dominant on the road but I’m confident he can bounce back today after the so-so start in Colorado.

Jason Heyward, OF: $4,400 (early) – I’m a sucker for Heyward, especially in Arlington with the platoon advantage against right-hander Scott Baker. The Braves’ leadoff hitter may not hit a dinger as much as we’d like but he gets on a base and finds ways to score points via walks, hits, or even stolen bases.

A.J. Pollock, OF: $4,200 – Pollock has five steals in his last ten games and will match up against Tyson Ross today. Ross has allowed the third-most stolen bases in baseball (29). Green will be Pollock’s color of choice should he get on base today against the Padres’ hurler.

David Ortiz, 1B: $4,700 – Ortiz did not play last night due to a foot issue, but it’s not considered serious and he could be in the lineup today. If he is, it might be a good opportunity to score some DFS points against drafters who are shy about the veteran’s injury. Ortiz has seen right-hander Jeremy Guthrie particularly well in his career, hitting .317/.396/.659 with three home runs and nine RBI in 41 at bats against him.
