This week we’re starting a new weekly column that will be here every Monday afternoon, it will be all about fantasy baseball keepers. The column will then move to Friday in the offseason. Since many fantasy baseball keeper leagues don’t decide on their keepers until the start of the new season, I figured I’d go over some fantasy baseball keepers from now until next spring. These aren’t guys that are obviously keepers. You won’t find Hanley or Pujols here. These are guys that you might’ve been able to grab in deep leagues and hold onto for next year on the cheap. Who doesn’t love a bargain?! My dead grandmother loved a bargain. Her death and bargains were in no way related. Filene’s Basement was completely acquitted in that case. Delmon Young was overdue for a post about him. The language of his contract was a bit murky, but here’s the pertinent information, “…at no time prior to 2009 or during the 2010 baseball season will Delmon Young receive an entire post dedicated to him or a lead in a roundup or Buy/Sell, unless he actually does something. Something to be determined solely by Grey Albright. If Grey Albright relinquishes said responsibility, then the hundred monkeys that write these facacta posts shall decide in a winner-takes-all round robin Parcheesi tournament.” See, I had to write about him; last thing we want is Delmon to get all litigious on our ass.
At 24-years-old, Young somehow feels stale. Didn’t we hype him three years ago? What took him so long? When we want a breakout or a goose that lays a golden egg, we want it NOW! Delmon was the number one selection in the 2003 Draft and the Cooperstown plaque was sent out for its carving. Unfortunately, the only carving that happened was Young, who looked like a turkey. And the carving knife was major league league pitching. Young’s plate discipline is as bad as the guy who needs a crane to get out of bed. He’s always swung at everything, but now he’s making better contact and not striking out as much. His power will probably top off at 25 homers next year. Half because of him and half because of Hubert H. Homerfree Retrodome. The speed’s disappeared a bit this year, but he has 10 steal speed. His average has never been an issue and Runs/RBIs should be there. Don’t expect Delmon to go 40/15 next year and win an MVP. He’s a keeper because I’m assuming you got him very cheap since he was barely drafted, if at all, this year. He should be the real thing for a long time to come, assuming he doesn’t take a karate chop to an umpire’s carotid artery.

One of Brown/Gardner was always on my bench and I probably wasn’t going to be able to keep both. I just took over 1st, so I’m looking for a Championship this year and I’ll obviously keep Young. Psyched.

@Black Beard: I don’t know what the numbers in Vegas are on that… but, my take, if Niemann or Davis are going on the DL for any length of time, and he’s lights-out in their absence, then he’ll have an ok shot at sticking in the rotation.
A good indicator will be in how they use him… meaning, if they’re skipping what would be his rotation spot whenever possible in the next couple weeks, then the odds aren’t good of him sticking around.

AL East pitching staffs weren’t exactly what I had planned for… It’s just the way the draft worked out this year. I drafted offense longer than I expected.. there was a handful of 5th-7th round talent around in the 8th, 9th, 10th round. Garza was my first pitcher taken, followed by Brett Anderson, Shields, Kuroda, Liriano, Cueto, Buccholz (22nd round.)
I dropped Cueto early on and ended up with Jaime Garcia and Cecil. Grabbed Scherzer after his AAA-stint and grabbed Morrow this morning and dropped Dom. Brown.
I’d love to package some of this pitching to upgrade on offense.. but having a hard time matching up.

got offered Latos for Rivera in my 14t roto keeper. i know Latos will be limited down the stretch, but Rivera has only pitched 6 innings(!) in the past month, and has just 3 saves. what gives Mary Anno? we get to keep 6 — i’m at 5 solid with a whole cast of potential #6s — and don’t love thinking about keeping pitching. but as a Pads fan, i do love Latos long-term (the next Peavy plus Petco?), so i’m mulling mulling mulling… what d’you think?
by the by, i’m in 5th place overall, trying to push for 3rd. this trade would help guy in 2nd push for 1st and a back-to-back championship, which would reset the league to a total redraft. mulling mulling mulling…

Hello Grey,
I have Domonic wallowing on my bench. I would like to grab Hellickson (in the baseball sense of course), so I was thinking of launching Brown. I could slip Jeremy into an RP slot since I think he has that eligibility. I also have Edinson and Damon on the bench, but Brown seems to make the most sense. What say you?

Oh, one more thing Grey. We are in a Keeper League, so I don’t know if that matters with Brown. It would seem that with Werth, Ibanez and Victorino settled in the Philly OF at least for now, Dom would not have much room next season. I picked him up when the Werth trade talks were buzzing around, but alas nothing was done.
By the way, I also have Delmon Young, so I am psyched. I like the Keeper articles.

Brown will almost certainly take over for Werth next year, so he might not be the best guy to drop. It depends on your keeper rules.

Good point. Our rules are that the player occupies his draft position with a max. round of 11th and 12th. It will be our first year as a Keeper, so we are experimenting. Free Agents (Brown) would also occupy the 11th Or 12th rounds, so I can’t see Dom being ranked higher than the 11th round. Is that confusing?

Grey, in our keeper league we have a $260 cap. The Adverb is at 20 bucks now. Would it be worth it to trade either Liriano or Gallardo for him if they were keepable at the minimum keeper salary (13 per year)? Lee would be 28 per if kept at 3 years. I’m assuming he will be a Yankee next year, which might be good for wins, bad for ratios. In this scenario, he’d need to give me another player to even it up, right?

For a boost this season, my 2011 keepers go from Pujols/Hamilton/Holliday to Howard/Tulo/Hamilton.
Top spot is probably out of reach, but top 3 is realistic.

This is a points league and 2 starts have value. Who should I bench? Wainright seems to be the one, since he traditionally does not pitch well at Cincy.

Been offered for Alex Gordon either Garrett Jones, Cuddyer or Carlos Lee. Honestly I don’t like any of them. Tried to get David Ortiz but was laughed at. What do you think?
The only thing about trading Gordon is I lose my 3B backup unless I get Cuddyer. Lee might be interesting but I don’t know, the Houston lineup doesn’t excite me.

Great…Corey Hart is day-to-day again with a stiff back. Of the guys available to me while he is out, how would you rank them from best to worst?
Span, Carlos Lee, Kubel, Raul Ibanez, Headley, Juan Pierre, Rasmus
The guy to go in order to free up a roster spot (unless Hart goes to the DL) will likely be Grandy. I have held onto him, hoping he would come alive to his potential. But, except for an outburst every few weeks, he lives to torment fantasy rosters.

Minor pitched better than the line looks. He only gave up multiple hits in one inning and they were lucky bloops. He’s not really over powering. It looks like he was pitching mainly to contact and the fastest I saw him get up to was 93mph. I was thinking of dumping him for Leblancs start tomorrow but he pitched well enough to earn himself another start on my squad.

Grey, is it time to cut ties with Simon? I’m more concerned about my ERA and WHIP than I am about my saves, considering I have 5 other closers.
Also, in a 12 team league with 4 OF slots, would you drop Grandy for Fowler, Gordon, or Snider? They would all be very cheap keepers, while Grandy can’t be kept.

I have the option to bring Hellickson from my minor league roster. Do you see him up for the rest of the year? Drop Hammel or Duensing for him?
