Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Jon Wertheim, arguably the smartest person we’ve ever had on the show, joins us to discuss a wide variety of sports topics including, ‘Why a .299 hitter is more valuable than a .300 hitter?’  Must be some sort of Algebraic Number Theory… or maybe he’s a communist.  We also discuss his book Scorecasting, which is kinda like Freakonomics meets Moneyball.  Nick’s community college education led to great questions like, “Are we still talking about baseball?” and “When’s lunch?”  There’s so much non-fantasy baseball talk in this fantasy baseball podcast that you would think we’re a non-fantasy baseball podcast posing as a fantasy baseball podcast.  We are not poseurs, which is a funny word to hear someone pronounce the moment they realize it’s not spelled poser.  Some of the topics Rudy and I discuss are Marcell Ozuna, the Marlins wunderkind, which means child prodigy so I’m not sure why it’s not wunderkid — I got spelling questions, y’all!  The Hitter-tron is tackled and when is that thing gonna finally be ready and we discuss Strasburg.  He hurt, yo?  Our favorite segment that we’ve only done once before also returns with, “Who are you picking up in this league or that league?”  Finally, I read a question from the comments.  It could be yours!  (It’s probably not.)  Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast (now with Jon Wertheim talking about smart stuff and Nick nodding, which makes great radio):

Will someone please tell me how and when the Chris Johnson/Juan Francisco platoon is going to end? J-Frank just hit a jack and I’m getting sick of having to juggle CJ in and out of the lineup. Obviously I don’t have room for both.

And just because the Braves are assholes I’m probably going to have to find a new catcher once Gattis loses his OF playing time.

I still love you, Dan Uggla, don’t worry.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@p0rk burn: Be nice if one of them got hurt (not for them), but I’d look to get a guy that plays every day… It’s not like Johnson and Francisco are that amazing even if they get the everyday job…

      • p0rk burn says:
        (link)

@Grey: In one league I need a MostSuckAss replacement (top replacements for CJ based on season performance are E. Chavez, Valbuena, and Francisco), in the other I have RZimm (same three available, plus Marwin and Donaldson) so I’m always waiting to throw in the sub.

They aren’t exactly spectacular, but I like to think with 100% playing time JFrank or CJ would out perform the other options.

    Grey,

Thanks for all you do, read your Daily Update as usual this morning (UK time).

One thing that confused me was that you said there was a glitch with Colby Rasmus in that he posted 1/4 HR and 2 RBI. Do you mean that this won’t happen every day ? Damn, I picked him up on Sunday and assumed that that’s what he does and you’d just overlooked him. Was looking forward to his contribution over the next few months …

I have a trade offer to consider, Felatio Upton for Trumbo. Am trying to buy low on Upton, but not sure Trumbo is low enough. I have Rasmus, Dom Brown, Ike Davis and Morales who are all expendable but I’m not sure whether they are too low so as to be ‘rude’ as an offer. It’s a 12 team 5×5 roto in which we keep 5 (but only 1 of the 5 can have been drafted in the first 4 rounds).

    What would you do?

    Dan

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I meant it’s deja vu from Monday, which was the glitch in the Matrix… I’d take Trumbo… I’d go lower for Upton… Try Morales and Ike…

      • Dan says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Thanks .I guess the Rasmus bit got lost in my head. I understood what you were saying but was trying to say (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) that in the two days in my team he’d posted that line and I am expecting the same consistent production from here on in.

Have offered Davis or Morales, will see what he says.

        Thanks again.

Is this the perfect storm of streaming or what? I’ve been streaming all the Hodgepadres versus the Marlins the last few days.

    Cashner – 7.1 IP / 4 H / 3 BB / 0 ER / 4 K / W
    Stults – 6.1 IP / 7 H / 2 BB / 1 ER / 4 K / W
    Marquis (so far) – 3 IP / 3 H / 1 BB / 0 ER / 0 K

Next up for the Marlins is a visit to LA to see the Dodgers. I think I may have to continue fishing for Marlin.

On a side note, I notice we have Hodgepadres, Marginers, MediOAKers but nothing for Dodger pitchers. Are they just too good? I mean, there certainly aren’t many more pitcher friendly parks. Are the guys like Magill just homeschoolers?

  20. Great work as usual, top notch guest as well.

A month in and I think it is time to address some pitching issues. Got Smarzjia, Moore, Shelby locked into rotation spots. Have Mo, Wilhemlsem, Kenley and Benoit as Relivers.

Wondering about Kennedy and Vogelsong who have been killing me in April. Also I guess I could lose Joaquin, but we have a hard innings cap of 1250 and I find those high K relievers are valuable, maybe having two is a bit much though… (oh and extra pitching catagory CG’s which is a crapshoot)

I am thinking Kennedy turns it around, not so sure about Vogelsong, could drop him and stream, was actually thinking of dropping him for Josh Johnson…last in Wins in the league, wondering about changing and asking for some advice.

Other arms (and healthy arms) out there on waivers are Kendrick Millone Santiago McAllister.

Not quite getting the cat hate. Their not carlos quentin folks!

    Hey grey.

Someone just dropped alex rios in my league. Unfortunately I am 10 of 10 on the wire claim list. I lost to 9 of 10 today. So I am now 9 of 10 (this is starting to sound very borg-like).

The guy who picked up rios dropped jason heyward for him. Please can you and rudy pray that I get my hands on the appendix free stud?

I would be dropping reddick by the way. I am still confounded by your belligerent support of him. Cortizone shot! Ha!

    • Gavin says:
      (link)

@gareth: 1. That transaction should never have happened. 2. If 8 managers let Heyward slide, I wouldn’t want to be in that league.

@Kid A: haha! You had to have seen that one thru with jack, kid…

    • @gareth:

Oh I like cats. A friend who had to move had me ‘take care of his for a little while’, ended up being over a year and turning into my cat. Got used to him, but he didn’t come home one morning last month, think he must have gotten into a fight with a dog, crazy tom. Miss him now. Doesn’t mean I’d want a cat avatar tho…

        @Elijah: poor crazy tom. R.i.p.

        • @Prezii:

I’d like to deal some pitching for better bats and just stream pitchers from now on, but I don’t know who to deal. I feel like with 3 aces I could stand to lose some pitchers?
    Team looks like this:
Sal Perez, Goldy, Cano, Beltre, Castro, Desmond, Arenado, Choo, Ethier, Cespedes, Bruce, BJ Upton, De Aza – Bench: Dee Gordon, Konerko, Laroche – DL: Hart
Hamels, Darvish, Cain, Morrow, Cobb, Cahill, Tillman, Grilli, Parnell

If you have a dog in your ass, I think you’re doing it wrong…I keed, I like coming home and having someone excited to see me. *Insert marriage joke here*.

I’m with you on the Husky. Beautiful dogs but I had a friend who owned one and due to that coat, they’re constantly grooming it.

@Sky: See, that’s the thing. When I get home from work, my cats greet me like dogs, coming up to me and bumpin’ noses. I suppose it’s possible I just have the BEST CATS IN THE WORLD (kind of like I own the BEST PITCHER IN THE WORLD, Matt “High and Hard” Harvey!), but I think it all comes down to that simple equation: the love you give is the love you’ll get.

Too bad this equation does not work with me vis-a-vis Alyssa Milano, as I have given much love to her while she won’t even accept my calls!

I think cat breed plays a part. What kind do you have? We have a Maine Coon. Basically saying it’s not a cuddly cat. It likes the idea of having us around but it doesn’t want any of those hugs and pettings ‘n’ shizz. Coming home to my cat is like going to see dad. That awkward ‘I’m happy you’re here but I don’t know how to show it so I’m gonna launch into that story about my prostate that we both don’t like telling but it’s the only thing I know to talk about’. Then before you leave it’s the uncomfortable ‘do we hug now?’ look. Needless to say, I don’t mind my cat but she seems to do fine without me.

Strategy question – in my 14-team H2H league, where I’m relievers-only, I’ve got an early lead over my opponent in ERA, despite Peralta’s blow up yesterday, and Holland’s mess the day before.

I also have a 1-0 lead in wins, thanks to Hernandez yesterday. I also grabbed Hefner for his start today, thinking maybe I could sneak another win and make it harder for him there (I expect to lose Wins each week) and perhaps really trim my ratios down.

Start him, or too much of a risk? If he gets torched it would make it real hard to win ERA and WHIP this week, and I really count on them. It’s the White Sox, though so Hefner is really tempting…

What can I reasonably hope to get for Hamilton at this point in time? I really need saves and the guys in my daily league don’t miss a beat. My OF has Holliday, cargo, and Markakis so I am not worried about OF. Could use a 1 B up grade as I only have laroche there. Should I wait it out or who to target?

@Grey: look, I’m not German, my parents lived there in the 60′s. The army sent my dad to Germany to be the payroll clerk during Vietnam so I got to grow up with a house full of beer steins they stole from beer halls. I got to grow up eating german sausages and fried potatoes. Now I have a weakness for it, amongst many other culinary treasures. but yes, I will admit it, I like German food.

                    (link)

@Grey: think of it as a call for smoked salty meat, bacon is the cheap convenient option. Might be Hamhock or Salt Pork too. Kraut also varies by region in how they prepare it, in some areas Caraway Seeds are used. The pickle guys also make kraut, it is a lot different than the canned stuff we all know. They actually put a kraut recipe on their website

      • After watching Goldy this year…I think this .300+ BA is for real. Watching him hit, his ability to go to the opposite field, his ability to still hit with two strikes, his balance and lack of excess movement at the plate (his head doesn’t wag around much at all), and his huge power to all part of the field: the guy he’s reminding me of is Mike Piazza. I can really see .300+ BA and 30-ish HR’s a year being the norm for him for many years to come (assuming no injuries of course).

          • SteveNZ says:
            (link)

@Elijah: Yeah,, cats are popular here, as are dogs for that matter. That whole ‘get rid of the cats’ thing was quite the furore.

But we’re pretty fond of our native birds too and there’s no doubt that a lot do get killed by (mostly stray) cats. Both of our cats are a little too incompetent to be able to kill too many birds…

That was the gist of this woman’s screed: that *all* cats in NZ should be forcibly neutered/spayed and no more cats allowed in the country after they were gone.

              @royce!:

Ziggy is solid. I think the A’s actually kind of pioneered another thing that doesn’t get talked about, which is constructing a pitching staff that gives you a lot of different looks. Different kinds of pitch mix. Side armers. Guys with complimentary stuff that change the velocity and the eye lines guys get from at bat to at bat. The Giants have bought in to that. Their pen works that way. A lot of MLB teams I think kind of try to do that. Makes sense.

Goldy was a good call for you this year, Albright. You stuck to your guns. How did you scout him? You probably see him a lot being out here on the good coast. I just saw the replay of his bombs tonight. He’s real quick to the ball for a big man. It’s a short stroke. The pitch from Jansen was up and tailing with good cut and he just went barrel meets ball. Props.

    • @OaktownSteve:

Yeah as I said before his hitting talent reminds me of Mike Piazza. Bit faster on the basepads (tho Mike had pretty decent speed when he was that age). Unlike a lot of guys he doesn’t have to do any leg kicks or take long swings or violently torque his torso to generate power. He’s just naturally really strong with just enough dip as the bat comes thru the zone to get the ball in the air. He’s smart and knows to change his approach with two strikes. He’s only gonna get better, barring injury. He’s clearly the best 1b in the NL moving forward to me, even over Votto.

I’ve been in the states for a while now, and get called garth or garrett occaisionally by americans. I wasn’t in waynes world nor am I part of the country music community. Its g a r e thhhhh.
