Rickey Henderson Hall of Fame Speechified
The only thing Rickey Henderson lacked in his twenty-four year career was humility. So, with Rickey Henderson an odds-on favorite for first-ballot election into The National Baseball Hall of Fame, we here at Razzball would like to tip our caps and our mugs.

You’re KILLING ME… No seriously, you guys are trying to get a dude killed here! I just spit out an entire cup of coffee.
@IowaCubs: Thanks, man. I feel like if I read a comment where you spit your coffee, our job has been done.

I love the “I’m still ready to play” aspect of your drinking game. After all, I don’t believe Rickey has officially announced his retirement — it’s simply five years since he last played in the majors, which automatically throws him into the voting pool.
Maybe he’ll be like Minnie Minoso and come back in his 60s and 70s to play a few games?

Pardon the interruption, Grey, but there has been a few password shenanigans (for Hippo anyway) with regard to the Second Razzball Commenters’ Mock Draft. Signup instructions have been amended and are available here:

Thank-you for your time.

One of my favorite Ricky being Ricky stories….
A Padres teammate (variously reported as Steve Finley or Tony Gwynn) once offered him a seat anywhere on the team bus, saying that Henderson had tenure. Henderson replied, “Ten years? What are you talking about? Rickey got 16, 17 years.
@Pops: I really like the story of him saying his New York City apartment looks out at the “Entire State Building.”

Nothing for trying to go in as a Newark Bear?

@Grey: I know one thing Rickey won’t be. Rickey won’t be a unanimous selection, some dick already left him off his ballot.
@BigFatHippo: Yeah, I heard that. Some old dude from Arizona who thought it was better to vote for Matt Williams.
January 9th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
@Grey: Why do they do that shit? “To protect the integrity of the game”? From what?
I couldn’t call myself a legit voter if I didn’t pencil him in on the first ballot. That’s what you’re here for Grey, to protect the integrity of the game from idiot sportswriters.
@BigFatHippo: His apology even made no sense. “I screwed up on the Henderson nonvote,” said Simpson, who detailed his choices in a Dec. 10 column for the Green Valley News. “You get to vote on 10 and I only picked eight. I probably did it too quickly.”
Too quickly? The Hall of Fame election process he did too quickly? Doode’s retired. Was there a hot Scribbage match he had to tend to? It’s really bonkers and pisses me off thinking about it.

@Grey: Haha, tell us how you really feel.
It’s bullshit, these geezers think if Walter Johnson wasn’t a unanimous choice then noone will be. Simpson- “Henderson, bah, he couldn’t hold Eddie Stanky’s jockstrap.”
There’s a great article in Sporting News with former pitchers and catchers discussing Rickey, you should check it out.

Rudy does a great job with HOF comparisons, we should petition MLB to give Simpson’s vote to him. I can imagine Bud’s reply, “we’re too busy with revenue sharing and the luxury tax to worry about HOF votes.”
@BigFatHippo: But Selig has time to think about it when he’s not thinking about the salary cap and why there shouldn’t be a WBC.
January 9th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
@Grey: The best thing about the WBC is who’s not playing in it. Albert’s not, Utley’s not.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
@BigFatHippo:
utley’s not ?
wonder why ?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
@Grey:
scribbage match ……jajajaja

if guys like ted Williams babe Ruth ty Cobb and Willie Mays didn’t get 100% of the vote no one will.
January 11th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
@BigFatHippo: Ha. That would be awesome.

I’ll be sure to bring the guide to Cooperstown with me in July – attached to the side of the cooler for quick reference.
@Mike B: As Rickey himself will probably say, Rickey’s induction will surely be one of the greatest ever.
January 12th, 2009 at 11:15 am
I can almost guarantee that Rickey will say he’s not retired and still wants to play.

Walk to the corner store. Pick up a copy of today’s New York Post and a bottle of Woodford Reserve. Open to the front page of the Sports section. Start chugging.
