It’s that time again. No, not time to take a whizz. It’s time to join some fantasy baseball leagues that you abandon by June 1st and then pretend to never visit the site again that sponsors them because you’re a scared baby inside that ten inch crust of orange Cheetos stain. That’s all right, we here at Razzball have figured out a way around all of you nogoodniks sucking the fun out of our 2009 fantasy baseball leagues. We’re going to have a bunch of leagues and crown a winner from each, then we’re going to crown ONE winner from all of the winners. We will be be crowning the winner by taking each team’s points and multiplying it against a ‘league competitiveness factor’. So we’re going to fill up as many fantasy leagues as we can for the next couple of weeks. Each fantasy baseball league will be a mixed league, 12 team, 5×5, 5 OFs, 9 pitchers, 20 game eligibility. The fantasy leagues will be played in ESPN and they will be free to join. Peace out, Yahoo.
We’re going to start with five leagues of 12 and see how we do from there. Each league will need an organizer. The duties of the organizer will be to accept 11 other people into the league, set it up at ESPN at the most conducive draft time and during the season post pretty pictures of the league standings. You can just choose one organizer from the 4 RCLs and contact them (the original RCL is invite-only, which is only fair because these guys have been the most active for the longest time). If we don’t get enough to fill 5 leagues, we’ll fold them together like egg whites and sugar. If we need more than 5 fantasy baseball leagues, then we will expand them like egg whites and a beater. (The spots open will be updated by me as I hear from the organizers.)
Now for the BIG prize! I know, you can hardly wait. As most of you know, I started this blog last year while on strike with the WGA. During the strike, there was a contest sponsored by the world leader in indigestion, Taco Bell, to write a catchy phrase for their sauce packet. The winner would receive a year’s supply of Taco Bell. Well, let’s just say, some doode showed up at my door recently with a seven-inch stack of Taco Bell $5 coupons. So I’m passing a part of my indigestion winnings off on you! The overall winner will receive $50 worth of Taco Bell coupons. If that doesn’t get the competitive juices (and gases) going, I don’t know what will.

I would like to be an organizer. Any chance I can make it an AL only league? I’ve been in fantasy sports for about 7 years and never tried the AL only thing. Also I have commish experience for the last 3 years and can rally pot together given my account receievable skils.

@Anthony G: Great, you can be an organizer as long as no one with a high comment count wants to be one. It can’t be an AL-Only league because Rudy plans on combining all of the leagues at the end to declare one definitive winner. If you want to try and get a pot together for your specific league (or other leagues), you’re welcome to. I don’t want to be in charge of that.

Do you just want me to set up the league (using the standards set of course), or how do you want this to work? Would you like a specific title to the league for name recognition? Is is safe to assume that we can draft anytime before the season officially starts?

@The Dude: The league standards will need to be dictated by Rudy because he’s going to statistically weigh the leagues to declare an overall champion.
I believe 12 team, 5 x 5, standard categories, one catcher, 9 pitchers, three man bench is the way we are going.
You can name the leagues whatever since I don’t think there’s any way to see them.
And yeah, any time before the season begins.

@Ballin: Just send an email to one of the 4 organizers and then they’ll tell you where the draft is gonna be. Also, pay attention in the forums for any league info. But that brings up a good point…

Create a Custom League in ESPN
Name: Call it ‘RCL’ ______ Division (get creative on the Division name)
12 Team League
Just maintain all the defaults they have:
- Default Roster settings (C/1B/2B/SS/3B/5 OFs/MI/CI/9 P) + 3 Bench and 1 DL
- Default 22 GS max per pitching slot (basically capping at 188 starts)
- Default 5X5 Scoring
- All MLB Players
- Yes to Observe ESPN’s Undroppable List
- Yes to make league viewable to public (we’ll link from our site)
- Etc.

I’ve been lurking on this site for over a year without making a comment. OK – enough with the pleasantries…
I’d love to join a league. I have one question: can I co-manage a team with a friend? We’re both active in three other leagues and we have entertained the idea of managing a team together instead of competing against each other.
@AZ Bobblehead: Good to have you finally commenting. I have no problem with multiple owners per team as long as one of you stays active. Just follow the steps provided, i.e., contact an organizer that has an open spot.

I’d like to lobby for another Utility spot, a 162 games played limit, a 1500 IP limit, and a 2nd DL spot – I think that’s all pretty standard……and getting rid of the Can’t Cut list (if a Pujols etc. goes down with season ending surgery it would be ridiculous) unless Commissioners can/will manually do that kind of drop for us….but I would assume everyone in these leagues should know what they’re doing and shouldn’t need a Can’t Cut List.
@Cookie’s Monsters: I have no problems with those things, but Rudy needs to sign off because he’s the one doing the league competitiveness so we can compare all teams. I’ll notify him of your comment.
@Cookie’s Monsters: Hmm. Good suggestions. Here’s my quick take. 2nd Utility – no. We’re big proponents on 1 C and 1 UTIL. We do all our Point Shares on these universes. We’d be hypocrites if we had it otherwise in the RCL. 162 GP…if ESPN has it, I’m fine w/ it I guess. Not sure if it really plays a huge role, though…what’s the worst case – someone has good bench mgmt skills and gets 168 games out of a position? 1500 IP – I’m open for an IP limit vs GS. Seems six and half dozen – hard to build up huge IPs without starters so 108 GS should do the same trick. Can’t cut list – gave it thought but felt it better to be safe. If a guy gets injured, ESPN will take him off the list. Just don’t want the whole league standings marred b/c someone takes a strong stance on Ryan Howard after a bad April….2 vs. 1 on DL is fine w/ me…
Let’s get some POVs going in the RCL to see if everyone’s in favor of these changes…the only one I’d say is a non-starter is 2 UTIL vs. 1…

@Winson: You need to set up the league by accepting emails from 11 others and then update the league occasionally in the forums. See the pretty pictures link I put in the above post. Figgy With It will have first dibs if he wants to though since he asked yesterday.

I’d love to be in a league with people who actually give a damn. Nothing is worse than having a bunch of assmonkies crap out half-way through the season. Love the site and the comments everyone is leaving. Great stuff!

Willing to join either Anthony or Wilsons league… how much is the entry fee to your league wilson? It said $50 earlier but you stated you were going to hold, did you make up you mind already?

You guys that are trying to make it a $50 buy in are defeating that purpose. We kicked around the idea of making it for charity but agreed that can’t work, because none of us know each other.
Look, the players that come here are some of the finest players in America. Let’s crown a champion, no cash involved, that just leads to more headaches for Grey and Rudy.

@BigFatHippo: The whole thing kinda puts me in a weird position. I would hate for everyone to say yes to $50 then October comes and there’s no money from your leaguemates. But on the other hand, you’re all adults, I can’t tell anyone what they can and cannot do. I took the charity thing under consideration and decided that it’s unfair for people who don’t want to part with cash to exclude them from the fun. So I decided no charity. I feel there shouldn’t be a league playing for money either, but that’s further out of my control.

Being an organizer would be great. I have a solid, strong core of 8 to 10 owners (almost all Razzball regs) and I’d like to put us up against Razzball’s best. This group wants to put up $25 each on the side, so my task would be to find a couple of new owners here who are eager to send five fins to a complete stranger.
Shouldn’t be hard, right?

Ok, I believe the Standings (http://razzball.com/razzball-commenter-league-master-standings/) are updated. Links to the Forum and League Pages are up for 7 of the leagues. I don’t have the details yet for one of the leagues (Sage’s?). We should have 96 total slots (12 teams * 8 leagues) and I think about 8 are open right now.
To make an even 100, Grey, myself, Diamond (http://razzball.com/category/contributors/diamond/), and Larry King (http://razzball.com/category/contributors/larry-king/) will do a 4-team league. I’m hoping I draft last and can get Pujols and Reyes with my first two picks! (i’m just kidding here…)

I did accept the invitation for the original league but I see that you have had to straighten some things out today.

Christopher – the same thing happened to me as BKK. I got an invite to the league, joined it, then some hours later received another invite to the Latin 9. Went back to the initial league, but I couldn’t get in it any more. I was able to join Latin 9, but the whole thing was a bit peculiar. There is the possibility that others who have not joined as yet have experienced the same wierdness.

so i see,,ive been reading on here for a couple of days,,might have to change my draft day routine,,normally i start with bloody marrys at 10 till 12 then beer from 12-3,then patron and finally break out the woodford reserve,,,think ill stick to beer and a shot or 2 late,,then after the draft ill get going,,,,

Is there any league by razzballthat is on the 25th or later because I was forced to leave one of the leagues because something came up and I wont be able to be at the draft on that day. Sorry I wouldnt of joined if I would of known earlier. So are all the drafts on the 21st or are there ones on the 25th or later?
just let me know if there arent its all good i will just try to join some other leagues

Looking through the leagues to see if they all are on the same page… there are some non-conformist settings in some leagues…don’t know if you can still change but this is what I see:
1) Honey Nut Ichiros – has a 180 Games started max… most other leagues have 198.
2) Neologasm – has 200 Starts max, other have 198
3) Gorditas – has weekly lineup and roster changes, all other leagues are on daily
