0The 2011 fantasy baseball rankings are not as far away as you might think. Right now, January Grey is throwing darts at a board to figure out where to place Edwin Jackson. Exciting! In the meantime, let’s look at the players who have multiple position eligibility for this upcoming 2011 fantasy baseball season. This took me far longer than it probably should’ve. Can’t someone write me a program that sorts all the players by games played at a position? Why do I need to go through every player on every roster? It totally harshes my buzz. I did this list of multi-position eligible players because I figured it would help for your 2011 fantasy baseball drafts. I’m a giver, snitches! I only listed players that have multiple position eligibility of ten games or more played outside of their primary position. So this should cover Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, et al (not the Israeli airline). Yes, Christmas came early this year. (Or (C)Hanuk(k)ah came late, if you get your Jew on.) Players with multiple position eligibility are listed once alphabetically under their primary position. On a different post, I’ll make some comments about some of the players. In the mean’s while, you make comments in the comments. Say that fast 117 times! I guess the major thing that pops out at me on the above list is that Cuddyer doesn’t have 2B eligibility going into the season. He was a nice 2B option down the stretch this year.
That being said, I’ll definitely be referring to this list this spring.

Thanks – can also add Mig Tejada (97 3B, 58 SS). How about a RP/SP dual eligibility as well.
I suppose the fact that Youkilis might not have 3B eligibility for the first week or so means he might slip a few slots in a few of the non-’pert rec league drafts, but it’s probably not the kind of thing you can count on.

I’m adding position eligibility to my mock draft report.
I believe Miguel Tejada can be added to this list. He played mostly 3b in the Al and mostly SS during his time with the Padres in 2010.
Just want to remind that each site has it own set of rules. RCLs (Razzball Commentor Leagues) are run via ESPN:
“POSITION ELIGIBILITY
Before each season begins ESPN will determine the primary position of every MLB player available in the game. The criteria will primarily be the past year’s playing time.
Positional Eligibility for Batters
Additional positional eligibility for Batters occurs when one of the following conditions is met:
Games played at a position during last season: 20
Games played at a position during current season: 10″
So, wherever a player shows fewer than 20 GP at a position for 2010, they likely will not have eligibility at the start of 2011. For example, the first player listed, Ryan Doumit, will only have eligibility at C, and not 1B (unless his primary position is designated 1B).

i’m not complaining and great stuff on the razzball draft breakout BUT mdc is kind of worthless right now so early on.. i did my first the other day and got carlos santana in the 15th round and brandon morrow in the 20th. there was like one guy drafting with me at the end.

@simply fred: Well, thank you. I think “ran away” would be a bit strong, but I definitely improved. Spent some time pre-ranking, which is more difficult on MDC since you can’t do it by position.
After that 1st draft, I figured I better put in a bit of work.

A quick question… In leagues that require 20 games played for a guy to be eligible at a position, does this mean that Luke Scott will ONLY be eligible at DH next year?… (on draft day, at least)

@Grey et al: Should I accept the trade offer of his Reyes for my Andrus & Gallardo? This is a 12 team H2H dynasty league. I’m already stacked with SP1s (Lincecum, Lee, Verlander, & Liriano) some of which end up getting benched occasionally for 2 start pitchers; whereas my SS is in there every week. Just not sure that Reyes is that much of an upgrade over Andrus. As always the feedback is appreciated.

It wouldn’t be that difficult to write a program that would ingest a baseball statistics feed into a database and then create a web-based app that would spit out a list of players who had multiple position eligibility.
The main problem would be getting the feed. I assume Major League Baseball does this (if they’re smart)? Of course, you’d probably have to pay, but that is life in a capitalistic world!

Yes, I believe that waiting on SP (and, by extension, RP) is the proper fantasy baseball strategy. I always resign myself to never having one of the “super aces” come draft time because I always wait until *at least* the 5th round before taking an SP.
It’s simply too easy to stream legitimate SPs during the season by picking them up off the wire. It’s not nearly as easy to do that with hitters, who are much streakier. Usually, by the time you notice and pick a hot hitter up off the wire, he’s cooled down and gone back to his usual suck.
For me, it worked out last year, as I picked up Kershaw in the 6th and Ubaldo in the 7th in my main league. No doubt I won’t be that lucky again this year, but I think the key is to nail down your offensive categories by taking stud hitters while everyone else is creaming their pants over the latest ace du jour.

@big o: Wait until the 10th-12th round for the first pitcher?? I generally like to have at least one or two semi-ace pitchers before the double digit rounds. (Kershaw, Gallardo, Ubaldo, etc.) I generally don’t go after any pitchers til around round 6. Depending on who I have, grab one or two, then wait a while.
@big o: waiting until 10-12 is pretty hardcore. personally i think i’ve narrowed it down to: first take 7 or 8 hitters, then a run of pitchers starting in 8 or 9 until 12 or 13, then just whoever’s good.
basically take true stud hitters until none are left. at that point, the remaining pitchers are much studlier than the remaining hitters. by definition! so take them until THAT cream’s gone. then the usual late-round gold-panning. (do people even know what gold panning is any more? they still talk about that up in middle school? i’m old.)
people still act like picks in rounds 8-12 are these precious, precious jewels, but if you look back at last year’s draft results, a lot of junk goes there. people reaching for mediocre middle infielders, your bartletts and asdrubals and figginses. i’m actually looking back at my last year’s draft here… berkman… denard span… okay, uggla, that worked… but yeah, i’m happy to just take closers there.

@barker: I thought the beginning said RIP Robinson Cano. Anyhoo, you a Yankee fan? I like your first 10 picks except for 6 and 9. Not crazy about LaRoche, Peavy’s a throwaway pick and you don’t have enough SPs. Team’s not bad though. I like the offense for the most part.
no im a met fan was gonna go crawford instead of tex which prolly would have meant lester instead of grandy but my comp crapped out and with that situation i would not of taken danks also i was looking oswalt there but he went a couple picks before me
I’m with big o as of right now. I could be nudged down the road but hitting is so thin everywhere except 1B and starting pitching seems to be super deep. I took Cain in the 6th and Oswalt in the 9th in the first Razz mock. I love Cain and consider him the equal of pitchers that will be taken before him in just about every draft. But OF in particular gets thin real quick.
Joe C, like you I got Kershaw and Ubaldo at those exact same spots last year. I doubt I’ll find a starter in the 10th that will perform where they did, but I think the starters in the late rounds aren’t much of a dropoff from guys taken early. I’m talking Hudson, Gio, Chacin, Kuroda and a few more that seem to be available late.
i don’t really get why you guys all keep saying OF is so thin. it doesn’t seem thin to me. i mean, thin compared to what? catcher? third base? DH? what else is there? there’s 1B, of course, but even there, once you run through the top 8 or 10 guys you come face to face with the dispiriting derrek lees and adam laroches pretty quick. i realize you need three or four outfielders, but still. there’s a bunch of random OFs i like than you can get pretty late. they won’t all work out, of course, but enough of them ought to.
of course people are acting like getting andres torres as your fourth OF is some kind of calamity when i love that dude, so maybe that explains it
@wily mo: I play with 5 OFs. Then throw in a UTIL guy and a potential OF bench guy and pickins get slim quickly.

Basically, where do you get your informacion (ole!) from?
Also, my main league uses 5 outfielders as well and there’s 13 teams, so yeah, outfield gets thin pretty quick.

Heh, being in the computer world, I forget sometimes that not everybody knows this stuff. It’s okay, I can’t say “Chevroret”!
A feed is just a stream of information that you would get from a provider site, such as mlb.com. This feed would be in a particular, documented format and would contain information on baseball players and their associated statistics.
You would take this feed and map its format into your database and insert all the player information (aka “consuming” the feed). Then you’d have to write the logic that would extract the information that you want from the database (such as multi-position eligibilty for all players that qualify) and display it in the format that you choose (in your case, in HTML).
But what I was saying was A) I don’t know who provides this kind of service. I would think MLB would, but I don’t know for sure if they do. And B) you would have to pay for the feed, but I don’t know how much they charge for this stuff.
So how *do* you get your information? I’m assuming you use some manual, 18th-century approach? Do you use a quill to record the stats on your parchment forthwith? :p

Quick question, i was debating with my friend on the topic of position eligibility. I’m under the assumption that if a player DID NOT play 20 games or start 10 at a position the previous season, he won’t retain eligibility in the position he don’t play.
i.e: Casey McGhee had 2B/3B in 2010 because of 2009. Yet in 2010 he spent 6 games away from 3B (at 1B and DH for inter league play I’m assuming). This means he’d lose 2B no? McGhee doesn’t have 2B in MDC.
On the other hand, would this same rule strip Adam Dunn of OF eligibility (which he currently has in MDC) for 2011 and leave him with only 1B/DH? He didn’t spend a single game in the OF in 2010.
@Eddy: You’re right. Each site is different. Yahoo is ten games the previous year and ESPN and CBS are 20 games.

@Eddy: There are exceptions. ESPN sets the primary position themselves. So, for example, even though Youkilis only played 2 games at third last year, if Boston designates Adrian at first and Youk at third to start the season, ESPN MAY (likely will?) assign Youk 3B as primary and 1B additional (based on games played there last year).

Thanks a lot for doing this work for us. I know you said 10 games was your requirement but Yahoo’s rules in the past have said 5 starts at a position gives that player eligibility for that year. Any idea if that carries over to the next year?

I was wondering if you remembered from the past if Yahoo awards position eligibility to those that have started 5 or more games but played less than 10 at a certain position. I’m sure there are very few cases of this but I was just curious.
Other than Youkilis moving to third and Prado going to the outfield, who else is moving positions this year that doesn’t show up on their initial position eligibility in Yahoo leagues?
Berkman should get OF early on for STL. Michael Young could get 1B, 2B, or SS eventually for TEX but it may take a while. Figgins could get 3b.
How does this work? Does ESPN require only ten games the prior season to be eligible in the next, or is that only an in-season prereq.? It looks like Lind is only DH eligible in my league, though he played 16 games in the OF last year. Just curious as I can keep him as a last round keeper, but have little interest in keeping him at UT all year. Not sure if you still will see this given how old the article is, but whatever….
