This week’s biggest add was Marlins hurler Andrew Heaney, whose ownership percentage rose +59% after his call up and strong debut last week. JB Gilpin broke it down in yesterday’s Pitcher Profile. Heaney should only get better tonight against a Phillies lineup that has struggled offensively at home this season. The 23-year-old lefty was this season’s big pitching prospect stash over the last few weeks and now that he’s up his ownership numbers have ballooned even more. Heaney could see a start or two skipped to limit his workload, but other than that he has the ability to make a big impact in the second half for fantasy owners. In three Triple-A starts prior to his call up, Heaney sported a 10.6 K/9 and a 0.78 BB/9. Pitching against the mediocre offenses of the NL East at Crayola Canyon adds to his fantasy value. If you stashed him, kudos. If you’re late to the party, get on board before he shows his stuff against Philly tonight. Here are this week’s big adds and drops in 2014 fantasy baseball…

J.D. Martinez – 47% owned (+47%)

If you have one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow you’re pissing on today. That’s one of my favorite pieces of advice and it applies to fantasy baseball at times. Martinez seems like the hottest of the hot schmotato brigade, and of course must be due for a collapse that will land him back on the pine. However, I think this is for real and the near half of ESPN fantasy teams that have scooped him up will be rewarded in the second half. I’m not worried about what Martinez’s struggles were in the past and I’m not going to fret over future playing time and regression. I’m just going to ride this one out. Martinez didn’t just make adjustments. Apparently he completely changed his swing, modeling it after players like teammate Miguel Cabrera. I don’t play professional baseball (shocking) but I would imagine reinventing a baseball swing isn’t an easy thing to do. We can’t argue with the results either. He hit ten homers in 17 Triple-A games prior to his call up and has hit .310/.344/.593 with seven home runs in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup. TREASURE.

Christian Yelich – 74% owned (-20%)

Yelich is scheduled to return to the Marlins on Sunday, and while some leagues have limited DL slots I would be making room for the 22-year-old outfielder instead of dropping him. Prior to his injury Yelich was hitting .259/.342/.418 with six homers, ten steals, and 41 runs scored. That’s a top twenty outfielder in runs scored/steals and a top thirty outfielder in on base percentage. He should slot right back at the top of a surprisingly good Marlins offense when he returns. When it’s all over Yelich could put up a 15/20 season in just his second year in the majors, making him one of the better draft day bargains of 2014. Batting from the left side of the plate, Yelich is actually hitting over .300 against left-handed pitching compared to .249 against righties. An improvement against right-handers could be in store in the second half as he continues to make adjustments to major league pitching. If you’re in need of an outfielder in a league where he has become available, scoop him up. TREASURE.

In a 10-team, H2H redraft league with no start limits, thoughts on picking up Heaney over guys like J Hammel or A Wood? I feel like they are both better ROS but its worth asking for your opinion.

As for J.D. Martinez, would he be worth picking up over C Dickerson, G Polanco, or E Hosmer? Thanks.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Prefer A Wood in that format

I think you have to go with Dickerson and Polanco in a shallow format, especially when CDick is at home

      • Achilles says:
        (link)

@Mike: Ok thanks for your response. I forgot to add that it’s a 5X5 league with QS instead of W if that changes anything. And you prefer Hosmer over Martinez?

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          Anytime. Yeah, but it’s close

  2. Clint says:
    (link)

Does this make Rajai Davis droppable or hang onto him?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’m actually hanging on to him. I don’t think this kills his value even if it eats into some of his playing time. Depends on the size of the league of course. 12-team, 5OF is what I’m referring to

Now, if after a week or so JD is playing every day and Davis is playing once or twice a week, you have no choice but to drop

  3. Cram It says:
    (link)

I didn’t know JD reinvented his swing. I’d buy in knowing that. When it’s successful, it’s liberating and empowering as all hell.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      Yeah, def interesting.

I read about it in a blurb on CBS where I own him in a dynasty. Apparently he studied Miggy and Braun’s swings, then tested it out in Winter League. Whatever he did, it’s working so far…

      • Cram It says:
        (link)

@Mike: That is interesting. Because I’m a Braun fan as a hitter and I can’t convince my friends that steroids aside, the guy will always rake with that swing. JD must agree.

        • Mike

          Mike says:

          Yup, absolutely

    • Mike

def worth a shot! you’re right to hold E5 and try to sell Cruz instead IMO

  5. Five-On-One says:

Does Marisnick sit once Yelich comes back on Sunday? Also, who sits when Saunders comes back this weekend? Do Dyson and Stubbs continue to get full-time jobs while Aoki and CarGo are out?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Yeah, I do think Marisnick will be the odd man out…

I’d absolutely grab Dyson if you need steals while Aoki is hurt.

Stubbs should also continue to see playing time, but his numbers are better against LHP

  6. RW says:

Haha, Gut says I would still take that despite my JD love

  7. CL says:
    (link)

I’ve got JD Martinez filling in for CarGo in LF.

I was struggling to get Marte in there too, and was just offered Lindor / Pitcher X for Marte. It’s a Dynasty League, so I’m looking to build a bit here.

Would you offload Marte, rock JD in LF for Lindor? Who would you rather have from this guy’s team: Gausmann or Wacha? I’m leaning Gausmann to complete the trade.

    • CL says:
      (link)

@CL: Or ask for Heaney alongside Lindor?

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

Solid rebuild move. Prefer Gausman over the other two arms. I’m assuming Marte is expendable thanks to CarGo? otherwise I think I would just go with Marte in dynasty…

    • Peter Nincompoop says:
      (link)

@CL: If Wacha wasn’t currently injured, you’d be crazy not to take him over Gausman. I like both, but in a dynasty format, I’d look to get Wacha back in that deal.

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

Yup, that’s fair. Can’t go wrong with either

        • CL says:
          (link)

          @Mike: Thanks.

      • CL says:
        (link)

@Peter Nincompoop: Right. Well, the wrinkle is now Marte has a concussion…??

Offer is on the table… Lindor/Gausman for Marte.

Maybe is gets tweaked to Lindor / Wacha since it’d be injury trade…. we’ll see how other manager comes back at me.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts men.

Would you drop anyone for Stroman in a deep keeper league.

    Here’s my pitching roster:

    Trevor Bauer
    Andrew Heaney
    Jake Arrieta (stream)
    Hyun-jin Ryu ?
    Wily Peralta
    Hisashi Iwakuma

    dl: JoFer, Harvey

    • CL says:
      (link)

@phenomenot: I have a feeling Arrietta might be a streamer… I own Stroman in a dynasty, 10 team. So if it’s a deep league, I would try to own him.

    • Mike

      @BitchesBeShoppach:

Long tem I love Yelich, and he looks like a less hackey Hunter Pence. i would take Yelich this year too since he is unlikley to take a magic step back, and any step forward would put him in the top 20 OF.

Mauer vs Moss in an OBP keeper league, who do you prefer for the next 2-3 seasons? And by how wide a margin?

    • Peter Nincompoop says:

@Dave: I’d take Moss for the next 2-to-3 seasons by a considerable margin.

P.S. It’s Mike’s article and he deserves the kudos.

(disclaimer) I just got home and have the game taped, so I don’t know what Heaney did as I write the comment…hopefully something good since I own shares

Missed the boat on JD…and people are really dropping Yelich?? I want in those leagues.

    A question to ponder:
I have 4 closers (Kimbrel, Robertson, Reed, Melancon) – I have an owner with a loaded OF desperate for closing help. Do you do any of the following:

    1. Kimbrel for Adam Jones OR Justin Upton
    2. DRob for Yoenis Cespedes
    3. Reed OR Melancon for Yoenis

I thank you for your ability to accurately predict the future, the remainder of my fantasy season, and subsequently my mental and physical health. Cheers

    • Peter Nincompoop says:
      (link)

@Justin B: Ha! I’d try to do Reed for Cespedes, if not, then maybe go to Robertson. Last ditch effort, I’d move Kimbrel for Jones. Definitely not for Upton.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      haha!

      I like Kimbrel for Jones

agree on the drops of Yelich…I normally don’t look at ownership stuff, so doing this post has really opened my eyes to some weird trends

  14. PeterB says:

I have a question that borders on the existential and has me frustrated and baffled beyond the Bermuda Triangle. I am currently in a 4-game losing streak after enjoying a 4-winning streak. I am entering the most important part of my schedule against division opponents and I cannot seem to turn my luck around. Here’s where it gets CRAZY. This is my team:

    C Miguel Montero
    1B Goldschmidt
    2B Neil Walker
    3B Sandoval/Arenado
    SS Dee Gordon
    OF Stanton
    OF Adam Jones
    OF Puig
    Util Brandon Moss

    SP Tanaka
    SP Wainwright
    SP Cueto
    SP Price
    SP Kuechel
    SP Chen
    SP Paxton
    SP Whitley

    RP Nathan
    RP Perkins
    RP Britton

    Bench
    Dylan Bundy
    Javier Baez
    Jimmy Rollins

Now, how in the H-E-double hockey sticks am I LOSING???!?!?

I guess my questions are: 1. Am I losing because basically ALL of these key, top players have been in a funk for the last 4 weeks? 2. Do/Should I make any drastic moves/trades (11 days left for trades) knowing that timing is a factor (I’m 6-6, will probably lose this week to be 6-7 and have 6 regular season games left. I’ll be 3 games out of first but I just need to make the playoffs)? Am I a buyer or a seller now?

Any help from anyone would be mucho appreciado!

    Frustrated in Milwaukee

    • Derek Perino says:

can you dump your bench for starting pitching? You dont need a bench do you? Try and rack up pitching categories. Your offense is fine except for Sandoval but that’s my opinion.

    • Peter Nincompoop says:
      (link)

@PeterB: Your bullpen isn’t very good, but then again, I don’t know the depth of the league your in. If it’s a 10-teamer, glaring weakness. 12-teamer, just a weakness. I’m assuming it’s a keeper-league as if not, you have no reason to be holding onto Paxton, Baez or Bundy. I cut bait with your bench, but your hitting looks good and your SP is solid.

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

These guys make great points. How shallow is the league? Roster pitchers on your bench to rack up pitching stats. No need to carry prospects that aren’t close in redrafts.

Otherwise, and most importantly, you have to believe in the talent you have put together and ride out the rough patches…it’s a long season and there are going to be valleys as well as peaks.

To give a sense for Heaney’s perceived value — in a 12 TM H2H 5×5 league I traded Heaney and Khris Davis for Carlos Gonzalez. I know I won’t get Cargo back for a few more weeks, but that seemed too good to pass up. once Cargo and Myers are back, this is my offense

    C – Perez
    1B – Chris Davis
    2B – Rendon
    3B – Longoria
    SS – Tulo
    OF – Stanton
    OF – Braun
    OF – Cargo
    Util – Bruce
    Util – Myers

At the moment, I also have Leonys Martin to plug in for SBs as needed.

and my pitching will get the job done, with the help of the stream-o-nator

    Zimmermann
    Latos
    Burnett
    Simon
    Kluber
    Chavez
    Alex Wood
    Dickey

    Thinking a few things

Doolittle and Gray for Rizzo and Whitley (am I giving up too much in Rizzo is it fair for both?)
Buerhle and Papplebon for Rizzo and Porcello (same question)
Street and Gio for Rizzo and Porcello

Or should I stay put? I don’t think I’m going to win with that staff or place in the top 4, 14 team league. Am I giving up too much offense in Rizzo? Will he keep it up?

    Thanks a ton!

    • Peter Nincompoop says:
      (link)

@Chris: Your SP isn’t in the best shape, but Rizzo is the best player in all of those trades. Gray and Doolittle isn’t bad for Rizzo at all, but I’d look around for different options. I wouldn’t target Buerhle or Porcello if giving up Rizzo is the end result.

Great work Mike…I have a trade question for you:

I’m in a 10 team, H2H, Keeper league with 5 Keepers per team, can keep each player for forever and we are limited to 50 moves for the entire season, including playoffs. The counting stats are Hits, HR, RBI, Runs, Stolen Bases, Avg….W, Saves,Strikeouts, WHIP, ERA, QS. We play each opponent for the week and need to win each category to get the points. Im currently in 1st place. my team sits like this:

    C-B. Posey (K)
    1b-M. Adams
    2b- A. Rendon
    3b- X. Bogaerts
    SS- D. Gordon
    Inf- M. Morse
    OF- A. Gordon, A. McCutchen (K), G. Stanton (K)
    Utl- K. Davis, C. Granderson

    Bench- K. Seager

    SP- Y. Darvish (K), H. Bailey,T. Roark, A. Wood, A. Cashner, D. Keuchel, J. Hammel, J. Weaver, H. Alvarez
    RP- J. Soria, D. Robertson, R. Soriano

    DL- J. Fernandez (K), N. Arenado

I’m currently sitting at 20 moves used. I have the ability to get Cliff Lee from another franchise for Fernandez and Adams….but I’m a little hesitant to do the deal because of how well Adams has been playing and I’m not sure I’d keep a 35yr old Cliff Lee. However, I do think I’d be a tough out with 8 weeks left before the playoffs with Lee and Darvish at the top of my rotation. With players like CJ Cron, Garrett Jones, Marlon Byrd, and Derrick Norris sitting on the wire, do I make this trade? Or should I stand pat as currently constructed?

    Thanks for the help!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

With only five keepers, I think you can take that deal and keep one of your other bats instead of JFer, especially if Lee helps you win a title now. Guys like Bogey and Rendon for example.

In a 10-teamer, there are probably decent repoacements available to replace Adams as well.

      It’s a “win-now” move…

      • Andre says:
        (link)

        @Mike:

Agreed….of the names mentioned. Which would be best? Given that I have some roster flexibly and guys are able to play multiple position….I know Norris, M. Montero, Cron, Garrett Jones, Duda, Loney, Gennet, Aybar, Byrd, Crisp, and R. Davis are all available.

        • Mike

          Mike says:

do u think betts is really good? —I have LaStella at 2B in an ESPN 5×5 keeper and BETTS would only cost $4 next year and 7 the year after. Problem is I dont have a bench spot so my pick up timing has to be close to his call up.

1- when will he come up AND how does ESPN figure positions? need that 2B eligibility.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Hard to say for sure when he will be up, but rumors are swirling with Victorino’s setback.

CBS has him listed as a 2B, but honestly I don’t even see him in the ESPN pool yet. My guess is he would be listed as a 2B/OF when he’s added, but it’s possible ESPN could enter him as OF only…

And I do think he is good, yes. Better than La Stella at least…
