And the Prospect Gods looked down at the Cardinals pitching staff and proclaimed, “And so it Shelby…”  But the Gods decided to keep Oscar Taveras for themselves — at least for a little while.  Bunch of Federalist-loving pigs.  So, the Cardinals make up for starting Jon Jay over Oscar Taveras by giving prospect, Shelby Miller, the 5th starter role over non-descript-in-every-way, Joe Kelly.  When I say, boo, you say ya.  Boo…ya!  Boo…ya!  Cherimo…ya!  Ah, fooled you.   In November, I wrote a Shelby Miller 2013 fantasy.  There I said, “The final answer on (whether he makes the rotation) will probably be decided on the last few days of Spring Training.  In 2012, he was called up towards the end of the season and gave a 10.54 K-rate and a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 innings.  If you look up that stat line in the thesaurus, its synonym is “lights out.”  Due to a butterfly flapping its wings in Indonesia, Miller also had a 10.54 K-rate in Triple-A through 136 2/3 IP.  His ERA wasn’t as purdy, but he “re-committed” himself in the 2nd half of 2012 and had a 2.88 ERA in his last ten starts with a 70/7 K/BB.  Weird, cause I had an aunt who was “re-committed” and things didn’t turn out half as well.  He can be a number one pitcher.  When I say that about a 22-year-old, we’re talking about someone having the possibility at a top ten pitcher in all of baseball.  Knowing the way Cardinals turn out young men… Um, I mean, knowing the way the St. Louis Cardinals can turn prospects into solid major league pitchers (the Vatican asked me to specify), I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shelby Miller being a productive member of the Cards rotation in 2013.  For 2013, I see 10-4/3.63/1.27/155 in 150 innings and 21 starts.  That’s a huge projection for a rookie pitcher.  And there’s a chance for more.”  And that’s me quoting me!  I’m in love.  He should be owned in all leagues.  Yes, even your eight-person league where you own all eight teams.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in Spring Training for 2013 fantasy baseball:

David Freese – Cardinals were encouraged by his MRI.  See, Freese didn’t get hurt going through the MRI machine, so that was encouraging.  Still sounds like he might miss a week or two to start the season.  Don’t worry, that won’t be the only week or two he misses.

Kyle Lohse – Milwaukee takes St. Louis’s sloppy seconds like a frat kid starting the night with Bud Light and ending with Milwaukee’s Best.  When will teams learn not to sign pitch-to-contact starters from St. Louis?  Milwaukee got burned by Suppan, Piniero was a flame-out with the Angels…. I’m gonna save you the trouble, major league baseball teams, don’t sign Jake Westbrook.  Ever.  St. Louis has the magical elixir for pitch-to-contact starters:  The Ghost of Dave Duncan.  He’d spook Scooby and friends, why doesn’t everyone else learn?  With this signing, nothing changes for Lohse in my top 80 starters and projections.  I didn’t like Lohse before the signing, I still don’t like him.  Or if you like your fantasy baseball put through a “Quick Change” title generator, Flores Por Lohse Milwaukee.   However, it is kinda cool how he has the bat signal on his chin.  Oh, and this absolutely kills Wily Peralta’s fantasy value, as he’ll either be the long man out of the bullpen or back in the minors.

Wilson Betemit – When I say DL’d with a knee ligament tear, you say you better, you better, you Betemit!  This should mean more ABs for Reimold, who could surprise with a 25-homer, .260 and a handful of steals-type season, if he can stay healthy.  Last year, he had 5 homers in the first 16 games before herniating a disk in his neck and missing the rest of the season.  Another April like that and he’ll be on everyone’s team by May.  *flashing lights* Post-hype sleeper! *flashing lights*

Brett Lawrie – Will open the season on the DL.  Well, there’s always 2014.  Kidding.  Sorta.  If draft season were just starting and not ending, I’d say stay away from Lawrie.  I’d say it loud.  I’d say it proud.  I’d wrap a rainbow flag around my shoulders and marry Yunel Escobar in Hawaii before drafting Lawrie.  But, that ship’s sailed.  So, you have to DL Lawrie and hope for the best.  Honestly, he’s still so young that even if he didn’t produce until his age 24 season (next year), he’d still be fine.  I know; a lot of good that does you if you’ve drafted him for this year.

Casey Janssen – Cleared for Opening Day.  Turned out CJ making the Opening Day roster is a lot easier path than being on the DL and having to get back to Top Closer via Last Chance Kitchen.

Xander Bogaerts – Sent to the minors.  I haven’t talked much about Bogaerts this year (at all, actually).  That’s because he’s not going to be up until September, at the earliest, and next June at the latest.  Here’s what our minor league writer, Scott, said, “Aside from super-prospects Jurickson Profar and Oscar Taveras, Bogaerts was the only teenager making noise at the plate in the upper levels last year.  He’ll likely end up at either 3B or a corner OF post, but his outstanding 2012 makes him a top-5 hitting prospect.”  And that’s me bogarting Scott’s Bogaerts info!  Xander should be someone to file away in deeper keeper (rhyme time!) leagues.

Pablo Sandoval – Bochy said that Pablo is determined to play on Opening Day.  He’s also determined to fit into size 42 pants.

Alex Rios – Sent for an MRI after tweaking his back.  He never seems to have back-to-back good seasons.  Now he doesn’t even have a good back.  Score one for Saberhagenmetrics.

Chad Billingsley – Optimistic about making his first start of the season.  That’s nice, I’d leave Chad hanging on waivers.

Yasiel Puig – Here’s what I said when the Dodgers first signed Puig, “The latest Cuban raftee to make it stateside was the fastest player playing in Cuba.  Fidel once remarked, “He’s faster than that servant I threw plantain flambé at.”  But for someone so fast, he did get caught trying to escape Cuba numerous times.  In all seriousness, Fidel’s slipping as a dictator if he’s going to let someone try to escape numerous times and still let them play baseball.  The Eternal General Secretary and All-Around Serious Worker Bee, Kim Jong-il, would’ve kiboshed that like underseasoned kimchi or a less-than-ostentatious fur hat.   Never the hoo!  Puig was also caught a bunch of times on the base paths.  His numbers read five tooly – .330 with 17 home runs, 47 RBIs and 78 runs scored in 327 at-bats — without the defense tool.  Guess that’s four tooly like a pair of Siamese twins.”  And that’s me quoting me!  Puig’s hitting .500-something in the spring and threatening to make the Dodgers team out of spring.  Right now, the Dodgers have Schumaker and a plethora of crizzap in left field, but that will change once Crawford is back, which could be the first week of the season — maybe even Opening Day.  If Puig makes the team, he’s not going to get enough ABs, and I don’t see him making the team.  The hype is nice, but, really, the Dodgers are benching Kemp, Ethier or Crawford?  Rhetorical!

Erik Bedard – Got the nod for the Astros’ fifth starter job, and I give him the head shake.

Scott Kazmir – Won the 5th starter job in Cleveland.  He’s the owner of a 4+ BB/9 and a 4+ ERA in over 1000 major league innings, and not recommended in any leagues.  With their rotation, the Indians only have a fighting chance to even make it to the fifth game of the season because of Brett Myers.

Jason Giambi – Indians purchased his contract and immediately DL’d him.  Damn, they beat the Yankees to the punch!  Right now, the Yankees are poring over videotape of old Rock n’ Jock games. “Hey, has anyone signed this Dan Cortese guy?”

Brandon Maurer – After dropping the excess baggage of Jon Garland, Maurer is now the favorite for the fifth starter job in Sea-town.   Scott, our prospect writer, said Maurer has a big frame and is good with breaking balls.  Sounds like Andrew “Dice” Clay.  The Mariners blow — hey, they need some money!  Maurer looks like the epitome of a Marginer.  Think a high-6 K/9 and a 4-ish ERA.

Erasmo Ramirez – Relegated to the Mariners bullpen.  You can *pinkie to mouth* Erasmo any thoughts of his upside.

Edinson Volquez – Named the Padres Opening Day starter.  Did someone say they’re using the Stream-o-Nator for the first game?  Oh, boy.

Vernon Wells – Took the Yankees physical yesterday.  “Can you breathe?  All right, he’s good!”

Jose Valverde – Boras said that Valverde has lost 18 pounds.  The soul weighs 21 grams.  Evidently, the SAGNOF weighs much more.  There goes Taco Bell’s promotion for Nachose Val Verdé:  it tastes like stale Doritos.

@Whatever: This isn’t a keeper league so I didn’t think it was cut and dried. Grey’s line for Gee this season is 12-8/3.82/1.24/157 compared to 10-4/3.63/1.27/155 for Miller. In his blurb on Gee, he said he had some upside, but I would guess he likes Miller’s more. Still, I’m the only Razzball reader in my league and thus I almost always check with grey before making a move based on his rec’s.

Of course I drafted Lawrie in a startup keeper league and third base was the only position in which I do not have a backup!

    M. Izturis is the highest ranked 3B on waivers. Lowrie and Chris Young were the last hitters I drafted. Which one should I drop?

    • bossmanjunior says:
      (link)

      @Wallpaper Paterson:

Was Gyorko drafted? If he fills in for Headley at 3B, he could gain 3B eligibility pretty quickly. Or maybe Juan Fransisco, but he might be platooned. Personally I would drop Young. I read Lowrie would be the everyday 2B with Weeks in the minors and if healthy, is the better hitter at a weaker position. Young was trash in the second half after the injury and he’s moving to a tougher league and a terrible park. Not to mention the A’s have a pretty crowded outfield. Depends on the rest of your bench and starters obviously.

      • bossmanjunior says:
        (link)

        @bossmanjunior:

Nevermind, didn’t see Gyorko already had 3B eligibility and was ranked higher than Izturis. Of the players ranked lower that I like, I would rank them as such: Wallace, Cruz, Nunez.

        • Wallpaper Paterson says:
          (link)

@bossmanjunior: I drafted Gyorko. I went to WVU for a spell, so I had to target him.

Also, I had a brain cramp this morning. Was stuck in fantasy football and fantasy basketball mode. This is fantasy baseball. I can DL Lawrie and add a guy off waivers. No need to cut anyone.

Grey and Rudy (If we can’t get both in a podcast, why not shoot for a comment?),

Its sounds cliche, but I love the frat beer blurb. I kid you not, when we had big house parties we would fill 4-5 large trash cans with Natty Light and ice out in the hallways. Then just keep our own quality beer hidden in our rooms. Another secret, used to fill name brand bottles with ABC brand liquor for the ladies. I don’t mean to sound cheap, but we would go through so much and I was living on a college student budget. Once watched a drunk chick chug ABC vodka out of a Grey Goose bottle. Simply amazing.

Anywho, I’ve got shallow league problems, so bear with me. I’m kind of freaking out about the dwindling depth at third base going into my 10 team draft. I already know I pick 9th and here is what I’m thinking. I’ve been trying to plan my strategy in accordance with the yahoo rankings but the recent changes have made me rethink my strategy. Ideally I want a 1B, 3B and 2 OF with my first 4 picks. Zimmerman was looking like a sure thing for my 3rd/4th round pick but recent changes have moved his ranking all the way up to 31st overall, which seems a little overvalued and making my chances of getting him for my 29th/32nd pick more unlikely. The options after that are not inspiring to say the least. What I’m proposing is taking Longoria with my 2nd round pick (12th overall) and taking a 1B or OF with my first pick. I could take Fielder with my first pick, but that would leave me taking 2 OF in the 3rd/4th rounds when all of the elite options are off the table. It would be a Jones and Cespedes/Holliday type choices. Or…I could take the best OF available in the 1st, Longoria in the 2nd, Jones in the 3rd and Goldschmidt in the 4th. If I roll the dice and hope Zimmerman is there in the 3rd, I risk missing out on a top 3B. Please walk me away from this ledge.

    • DonSlaughtOnslaught says:
      (link)

@bossmanjunior: What would be wrong with Fielder/Longoria/Jones/Cespedes? I am not sure who you think an elite OF is after Braun, Trout and maybe McCutheon, but Jones can be as good or better than Justin Upton or CarGo. I would much rather have Longoria than Zimmerman if both are healthy a whole year.

Just an idea, would be interesting to have a glossary term for shallow league problems, like white people problems. “Grey, do I start Trout or Stanton at UTL today?” Like a rich white woman complaining around her botox injections or how her limo driver is rude. Our shallow league problems seem so trivial to people who actually play in competitive deep leagues.

Let’s just say theoretically speaking that you haven’t had your draft yet. Let’s just say theoretically your draft is, say, tonight. And Let’s just say theoretically you’re a Blue Jays homer who owned Lawrie last year and were kind of planning to re-up. Exactly how far away from Lawrie would you stay?

Which is to say: Is there a round he could fall to that you’d consider taking him? 7? 9? 15?

    • Steve Stevenson says:
      (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: I’d want to say something like the 9th, but honestly, with all the 3B injuries this spring (Wright, Lawrie, Sandoval, Headley, Freese), the depth is getting tested and people will reach. By the 9th round of my 12-team draft last week, before some of these injuries hit, the best 3B available were from the Frazier/Moustakas tier. If you really want Lawrie you’d probably have to go 7th or so, and that’s a little rich at this point.

Currently I have FraizerMiddlebrooks manning third. Bautista Granderson Werth Eaton Victorino Markakis currently in the OF. We play an IF slot instead of an extra util.

Also I have a 16 team draft tonight with current and former employees of the Baseball Hall of Fame. I have the firstpick, one year league, Im thinking about taking the guarantee of Miggy, but am also pondering Braun. Trout is not on my list seeing as how there is 500 dollars riding on this league, and I dont wana lose it because trout regresses.

Got an offer in a dynasty league of David Murphy (meh) and Gio Gonzalez for Chase Headley and Yasiel Puig. Should I bite or hold out for more possibly. 2nd offer I’ve gotten for Yasiel, who seems to be the new ‘it’ girl. I think Headley is/was overrated and tried to move him unsuccessfully before the injury.

    • Whatever says:

Can you rate my team – how’m I hangin’

5×5 2C, MI, CI, 5 OF, U, 9P (playing against some serious talent – on paper)

    3rd pick

    Avila
    Pierzynski
    Au Shizz
    Uggla
    Aramis Ramirez
    Rutledge
    Segura
    Braun

    Doubront
    Holland
    Boggs
Al Al (yes I took him over Benoit – because you know not only IF, but WHEN)
    Marmol (got him so late)

Lastly, Latos and Bailey both pitch against the Angels (for some reason) in week 1. I’m afraid of the Angels bats like I’m afraid of playing against you in fantasy baseball. So do I start Al Al and Griffin (faces SEA) and just pitch 6 SP’s the first week?

    “And so it Shelby…”

I don’t usually crack smiles so early in the morning. Kudos!

I finished a 12-team auction league last night with OBP instead of AVG. the limit is 1,250 IP, about 100 or so less than what I average in the RCL (h/t VinWins).

    C-Alex Avila-$1
    1B-Albert Pujols-$36(!)
    2B-Rickie Weeks $6
    3B-Aramis Ramirez $18
    SS-EverCab-$1
    OF-Justin Upton $38
    OF-Jay Bruce $30
    OF-Matt Holliday $32
    Util-Brett Gardner $3
    Util-Michael Morse $2

    SP-Cliff Lee-$23
    SP- Yovani Gallardo-$14
    SP-Jonathan Niese-$5
    SP-Jeff Samardzija-$9
    SP-Homer Bailey-$3
    SP Hyu-Jin Ryu-$2

    RP-Mariano Rivera-$6
    RP-Joe Nathab-$7
    RP-Jason Grilli-$5
    RP-Casey Janssen-$2
    RP-Kenley Jansen-$3
    RP-David Robertson-$1

So I think I did all right. I’ll probably have to pick up steals off the pool.

My WHIP may be a slight issue with SP, but are my RP enough to counteract that? And is 6 SP the max you’d have in a league with such a short leash in IP?

HA! re: Volquez. I had the same thought yesterday re: streaming him in Metco opening day. If Headley were in the lineup I’d probaby do it.

In a 1400 IP cap keeper league, I built my staff around a few high K/9 starters and a bunch of high K RPs (Al Al, Rosenthal, etc). With Beachy on the DL i have a roster spot. Planning to use SON to keep up with my IP pace and target Wins during the year. That said, my last couple SPs (Samardzija, Harvey) are on bad teams and carry some ratio risk. Should I grab Tim Hudson for W and ratio stability, or do his low Ks neutralize the rest of my staff too much with the IP cap? OR should I double down on Ks and follow your rankings with a Doubront or Fiers? OR use that roster spot for SAGNOF speculation (Casilla) or an upside bench bat (Marte, Martin, Bradley, Lowrie)?

Thanks for the reply. I might try and move some pitching to get an upgrade at 1st or 3rd, do you think I should try and move Plouffe or Lind?

I realize you aren’t a fan of Plouffe and neither I am really, but he may have an outside chance of a breakout. Lind has been a disappointment for years. He’s crushing it in spring this year (meaningless) and should be assured everyday playing time as long as he does not struggle out of the gate. Also, the improved lineup in Toronto should help.

Okay, so we are adding a max of 3 AL players to our NL “only” league this year. I pick 4th, 12th and 21st. I’m in a pickle and it’s not a Vlasic.

I offered Verlander, my first round next year and another first round the following year for Mike Trout, a 15th next year and my trade partners choice the following season (I conceived this when I was drunk btw) Verlander is a second round keeper this year which if kept next year will count as a first round pick. I won’t be taking a pitcher that early so I wanted to try to get some value out of him this season. Well our league vetoed the initial trade citing that I was giving up too much for Trout. My reasoning is that Trout was a 22nd round keeper this year. He will be eligible to be kept for this season then two more after so he essentially will be a 22nd round this year, a 21st round next year and a 20th the following season. The trade has been re-posted to me except that instead of a first rounder next year he would take a second rounder instead to try and appease the unwashed masses of our league (all eight of them). Am I spending too much for Trout? I love how my lineup looks with him in there. Granted my pitching won’t be great but I intend on using the stream-o-nator to good effect.

Adding to the (no-doubt growing) slew of Shelby Miller questions, what number overall would be a good place to target him in a 10-team ESPN 5×5 H2H? I see him in the 290s in your rankings, so with the rotation spot in hand, does that number creep up and how aggressive should I be in possibly drafting him?

    Thanks!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@chillmodious: I projected him for 150 IP when I ranked him… Don’t think he throws much more than that now… He’ll be limited at some point… Could see reaching for him anywhere in the 200’s… Early or late…

  58. Thanks as always for the commentary/advice. Looking for a bit of a “how’d I do” here, 13 team 5×5 mixed league, my keepers at round value were Kemp in round 2, Davis (13), Desmond (16), Harvey (20) and Peavy (24). Picked up Aviles at MI because Gyorko is 3B only at Yahoo at this point.

      • Whatever says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Thanks, Grey. Yeah I know. You have to make some choices when you go deep. one thing I noticed over the years is that OF’ers and young starters get rotated a lot more frequently than other positions at the MLB level. That is why I wanted to secure a good infield. I figured i could find some more starting pitching and Outfield depth later in the year.

@Herschel: I think Pujols/Jones, with it being weekly those two will never take a day off unless they are actually injured. The Dodgers love rotating guys and giving days off and Stanton could sit for dings as the Marlins try to protect their only major league ready player.

There are rumblings that Taveras will break camp with the Cards if Beltran is forced on to the DL with this toe injury. Per ESPN:

Taveras will remain with the Cards as long as there is a path to regular playing time, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Spin: Carlos Beltran is cleared to play through his toe injury, but it’s a matter of pain tolerance and he will be evaluated again Tuesday before potentially getting into a Grapefruit League game. Taveras, who collected four more hits Monday, has raked this spring, while the Cards are seemingly more concerned about his development than the potential arbitration implications of having their top prospect on the Opening Day roster. If Beltran is unable to open the season in right field, it would not be surprising to see Taveras manning that spot next week.

In a 12T H2H categories league, I drafted Shelby Miller and Aaron Hicks in the final rounds. Problem is, I have plenty of OF to slot in (jUp, Bruce, ShinSoo, Morse and Hicks) but only one SS (Alcides Escobar). I like to always have a plug and play option at all positions. Jean Segura sits on the FA list, should I drop Miller or Hicks for Segura? Or stick with the upside on both those guys over what Segura would give me? Thanks so much.

Mr. Gray: Having once scooped the “shockingly too highly selected by the Tiggers” Verlander and a Boris contract balking and refusing to sign at deadline Weaver the younger in 2005 to awe of my league in the same reserve draft…. The next year 2006, I was proven to be a genius… RIGHT??? …Sure … Lucky as poopoo is more like it… While so many of the highly touted phenoms as usual went on to expected rookie lousy years…

I will say this…. Most rookie pitching phenoms suck…

In general, they are not worth drafting. in these formats.. (A Darvish being an exception as he was no true Rook)

The success/failure rate (being nicer – the MLB adjustment period rate) is lopsided towards a poor performance even by the best of phenoms..

    WARNING WARNING!!!!! BE CAREFUL!!!!…

My take is Shelby Miller will disappoint again and the odds are with me…

  85. T-ball hero says:
    (link)

I am a cardinal fan. I, in every way, want to Miller succeed. But it isn’t all great with him. He got beat around in AAA for a reason – he only has two pitches. Two very nice pitches, a fastball with movement (when up) and a + curve. But to go through a major league lineup three times you are going to need more than that. He did fine as a reliever last year because hitters only got to see him once. I’m guessing (and I could probably look this up, but I am lazy) the delay in naming him the fifth starter this spring was to see if he could develop a change or sinker (it is after all, the cardinals, where the ghost of duncan lives).

  96. Could you please share your thoughts on the following small 10 Team H2H squad drafted with your recommendations in mind. As encouraged, I retained Bumgarner as a 6th Rounder over Kershaw as 2nd Rndr; and dispite considerable chastizing from leaguemates, in this 10 Teamer, I loaded up on bats early & think my rotation turned out just fine. The League limits in-season moves, so Pitching is at a bit of a premium.

    C Salvador Perez (18), 1B Paul Goldschmidt (K) 2B Dan Uggla (26), 3B Evan Longoria (K), SS Josh Rutledge, (13), 2B/SS Danny Espinosa (14), 1B/3B Ryan Howard (11)

Poised to place Garza & Eaton on the DL (hate waiting for those two letters to show up), and with possible AVG concerns, available bats and ams (need one each) are as follows: Moustakis, Machado, Gyoko, Cain, Marte and Boggs, AlAl, Robertson, Norris, Detwiler.

Drafted on Saturday for my 10-team Head-to-Head Points league. I had the 1st pick, here’s my team (and where they were drafted): Note-position eligibility was changed to just 1 game needed from last season or the current season

C- Victor Martinez (100 – he needs to catch 1 game here to be eligible)
    1B- Adrian Gonzalez (40)
    2B- Jason Kipnis (101)
    3B- Miguel Cabrera (1)
    SS- Brett Lawrie (80)
    OF- Carlos Gonzalez (20)
    OF- Alex Gordon (60)
    OF-B.J. Upton (180!)
U- Chase Headley (140! People weren’t touching injured players)

    SP- David Price (21)
    SP- Cliff Lee (41)
    SP- Adam Wainwright (61)
    SP- Chris Sale (81)
    SP- Mike Minor (160)
    SP- Matt Harvey (181)
RP-Aroldis Chapman (120! We only need to roster one RP – suppressed in points formats)

    B- Curtis Granderson (141)
    B- Hunter Pence (121)
    B- Jonathan Lucroy (161)
    B- Brandon Belt (200)
    B- Jean Segura (201)
    B- Dustin Ackley (220)
    B- Starling Marte (240)
    B- Leonys Martin (260)
    R- Josh Beckett (221)
    R- Marco Estrada (241)

We can’t keep any pitchers on our active bench. Basically every scoring period you need to decide which 6 starters and 1 reliever you are using and lock 2 players in your Reserve position. You can add/drop from your active pitchers. I usually don’t like picking on the end but this year I loved it. Taking Miggy at #1 was a no-brainer, especially in points format, and I was able to land so much value throughout the draft as players fell. Nobody was touching injured players so at the turn in the 14th round I took both Headley and Granderson back to back (Hanley went a few picks later). I also didn’t plan on having such a dominating pitching staff, but with the values that were presented and the importance of top line K/inning eaters in the points format, I love the way my roster turned out. I don’t really feel like my lineup suffers much with the way that things fell into place in this draft.

  104. Hi Grey and Rudy — First question in the blog this year! Thanks for all the past help, and apologies for starting out with a complex question like this.

Here’s my roster in a 14-team 6×6 (holds) roto league (9 starting hitters incl. UTIL, 1350-inning cap). Three and a half questions to follow the roster …

    C Victor Martinez
    1B Adrian Gonzales, Kendrys Morales
    2B/OF Emilio Bonifacio
    2B/SS Josh Rutledge
    SS Zach Cozart
    3B Miguel Cabrera
    3B/SS Eduardo Nuñez
OF Adam Jones, Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Beltran, Hunter Pence, Torii Hunter, Lorenzo Cain, Cameron Maybin
SP Max Scherzer, Kris Medlen, Jonathon Niese, Tommy Milone, Andrew Cashner
RP Joe Nathan, Greg Holland, Luke Gregerson, Al Alburquerque

I think I’ve got too many OF, too little speed, and am probably an SP short given the innings cap.

1: There are a lot of borderline pitchers available: Tommy Hanson, AJ Griffin, Detwiler, Dillon Gee, Mike Fiers. Do I pick one up? And who do I drop? Maybin seems like the best drop, but I probably need speed.

2: Peter Bourjos and Krispie Young are on waivers. If I drop two players, are either of them an upgrade?

3: While making the changes I can fill my two DL slots: who’d you suggest between Beachy, Luebke, and A-Rod?

3.5: Any general observations or advice?

Thanks a million, gentlemen, as always.

    • @Enrique: I guess I could add Chris Capuano, Buehrle, and Lohse to the lost of borderline SPs above. But now I’m digging pretty deep.

    Grey or Rudy,

Trying to decide how to structure my pitching staff for my league that drafts tomorrow night. Cats are Ws, ERA, WHIP, SVs, HLDs, K/9. w/ a minimum IP of 15. We start 2 SPs, 2 RPs, 4Ps and have 4 bench slots. I’m thinking 1 good pitcher with Greinke being the first I’d consider in the 4th/5th round or if I miss on him, Bum/Scherzer/Gio. After that, I’m trying to decide how to break down the numbers on the rest of the staff. Would 3 starters be enough? If so, would you go with someone like Niese as the #2 and then pick up a guy late like Milone? Or should I go with 3 that are on Niese’s tier or above? Beyond that, how many closers and MRs would you guys suggest drafting? I was thinking 4 closers and 3 or 4 MRs. Would you go with a 12 dollar salad like Chapman to anchor or just wait and load up on guys in the next tier? Also, I noticed earlier in the comments that Rudy thinks Kenley Jansen is the top MR. Any other guys I should target specfically? I found the post from one of the other contributors who ranked the MRs, he has Pestano, Robertson, Joel Peralta, Jake McGee, O’Flaherty, Mike Adams, David Hernandez, Clippard, Kenley Jansen and Frieri as his top group.

Thanks in advance. A little lost on this one since its a vastly different strategy from my other leagues.

I’m thinking I may need another closer and maybe one more bench player (I think 1 may be enough but others have told me otherwise). I would drop Lohse to pick up Janssen, and if you recommend another bench player I’d drop Miller or Teheran for Dominic Brown, Simmons or Bonifacio. Thoughts??

    C – Posey
