It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the strikeout pitcher. I jumped on the Wandwagon during last year’s preseason for this reason. So it’s only natural that I’m excited about Jonathan Sanchez. First, let’s expand briefly on why the K pitcher gets me all googly. I recently said this to frequent commenter, Simply Fred. Me, “ERA is fielding dependent. Obviously fantasy depends on ERA, so it shouldn’t be ignored, but it can be taken with a grain of salt. ERA is a lot like average. There’s wide variances and the two stats aren’t always controlled by the player. Say a hitter is a .280 hitter. Depending on luck that hitter can be a .310 hitter or a .260 hitter, but in the end his skills say he’s a .280 hitter. Same with a pitcher. A pitcher can be a 3.20 pitcher and fall anywhere between 2.80 and 3.60 ERA and still be a 3.20 pitcher. Pitchers only really control a few things. One of those things is Ks. If they’re a K pitcher, they should, without injuries or other anomalies, get Ks. So a pitcher can be a 180 K pitcher with a 3.75 ERA. Or a 180 K pitcher with a 3.50 ERA. Or a 180 K pitcher with a 4.00 ERA. The one constant — the Ks.” I.e., Believe in the K. In this game of fantasy baseball, you want as many sure things you can get. The 40 homer hitter, the 40 steal threat and the 180 strikeout pitcher. Which brings us to Jonathan Sanchez and why he’s a 2010 fantasy baseball sleeper.
On June 22nd of last year, Sanchez moved to the bullpen because his last three of four starts were shellackings. As in, he got shelled while lacking command. Whether Righetti twirled Sanchez on his fork with or without a spoon, it’s unbeknownst to me, but Sanchez posted a 3.48 ERA after that brief trip to the bullpen. But, more importantly, his strikeouts held strong and his walks were down. In the season as a whole, Sanchez had a 9.75 K/9. For those iffy on math, that means if he gets 200 innings, he’s getting more than 200 strikeouts. A 200 strikeout pitcher who is being drafted in the final rounds of a 12 team mixed league draft? That sounds mighty nice. Is he going to kill you on WHIP? Probably a bit, but as mentioned like five sentences ago, he started to control his wildness. To mix metaphors, let’s put a bow on this sundae and put it in the oven. He pitches his home games in a pitcher’s park and he’s only 27 years old. All told, Jonathan Sanchez is a 2010 fantasy sleeper.

I’ve taken the guy in every mock I’ve done, so I agree with every single word.
And when you’re not drafting with other Razzballers, you’ll have no trouble getting him late.

Great post! I like Sanchez a lot as a #5 or #6 fantasy SP. The awesome Ks, good team and pitcher’s park are all plusses. And even with the brutal control, the high K/9 and decent HR/9 give him a very nice FIP – 3.85 in 2008 and 4.17 in 2009. Not too shabby and at age 27, room to grow! I much prefer Sanchez over pretty much every 5.0 K/9 pitcher that starts for the Nats and the Pirates, LOL.

Dig it, Grey. He’s on my watch list and I’m glad to see the backup. For deep, dark leagues (mine’s 16), what say you between these three as potential end-of-the-draft/waiver fodder guys with big K upside: Kris Medlen, Derek Holland, and Chris Tillman?

Can I recommend a post for Kendry Morales? I have a hard time deciphering just how different he is from Votto. I don’t see how he goes so much later, but everyone seems to love Votto and hate on Kendry. And when I recommend this, will you do this? Grazie senior

Are you sure that this dude isn’t gonna go all Manny Parra on us? Still, you have to like any high K pitcher who is going to toss the majority of his starts in the NL West.
Any thoughts on Zito? Was the second-half renaissance for real?

Grey, I wish you would stop posting your sleepers as we have very similar views this year (probably because I’ve been coming to your site for so long). Anyway, your ruining it for me! haha
I’ve been advocating a ‘punt’ average strategy for some time for this same reason. Everyone says I’m crazy, but you can build a great team that way and as you said you need to view average as a range, not a projection.

Great analysis, Sanchez looks like he will be well worth a pick when reaching for a starter late in drafts. The 3.48 ERA after the bullpen stint is very surprising.

Is a Johnny Cueto post sleeper post forthcoming? What kind of numbers do you see out of him this year, assuming Dusty doesn’t pull a Dusty on his arm? 12-14 wins, 3.75 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 175 K’s a reasonable expectation for Cueto this year?

I’m guessing “sleeper” = “underrated,” ie. will outperform his ADP. Si? Ja? Zsa Zsa?
I thought Johnny O’Sanchez was a sleeper last year, I just missed getting him in a late round. This year, anybody who sleeps on a 27-year old with 177 Ks in 163 IP and a very manageable 1.37 WHIP is someone bound to lose their lunch money in a game of tic-tac-toe. Only 22 guys had more Ks than Sanchez last year.
To me, he’s a #2 SP in a typical league, with some risk and upside. I agree with Grey about Ks being in your control. I generally put any SP I can count on for 150-175 Ks in the #2 SP range and rank them within that range based on the finer points (ie. k/bb ratio, hr rate, do they know a bidet from a Krups kaffee machine?).
Here’s the thing about drafting SPs with high K-rates: if your ERA or WHIP are inflated (I’m looking at you, China), you can pick up SPs or even middle men to help out without having to chase Ks too much. I draft for things I can control — HRs, SBs, Ks, and even SVs — and then manage from there.
Johnny O’Caveat: his k/bb ratio last year was exactly 2:1, which is just barely on the good side of “good.” In fact, his walks/IP seemed to go up a bit last year (although maybe not evenly, did he cut them down in the second half?). So unless his stuff has become less hittable (which is possible, I bet Fangraphs would be helpful), his ERA and WHIP could regress (something I do every day if I have a late lunch).
Good rule of thumb: chase Ks, not Ws.

@Grey: Ouch, I own Max in a keeper league. Is it the AL, or his terrible inefficiency (high pitch counts)?
I also have Wandy, who I think is a big injury risk this season (check his curve-ball frequency, Grey… in fact, you taught me to do that!).
We get to keep 10. I’ll see about dealing to get a SP back I can trust more than those two. Elsewise, I could sport the biggest elephant balls of all and go with 10 hitters into our draft.

Is Gil Meche even ownable anymore? Very cheap keeper, but its an undroppable keeper league. Got burned last year and don’t want to deal with that this year. Where has John Maine gone? Is he gonna have an impact.

HA!! Who says Razzball terms can’t seep into the mainstream?!? I was half-expecting Polanco’s name to be spelled a little differently too
I’m separating the top 300 into 12 players intervals and I’m looking at the discrepancy between MDC and Yahoo! rankings.
In yahoo, Butler is in the 7th round, Mauer is 10th OVERALL (and they expect him to hit 36 HRs [yet they all advocate that he's overdrafted]), Howard is 14 overall, Crawford is 9th overall, and Andrus is at a ridiculous early 11th round. It’s a double-edged sword because in my main draft my league mates aren’t too keen on who’s a bargain or not and they’ll probably let the default rankings guide them. So I’ll catch a break if I pick after 10th and let a guy who has that Mauer ManCrush get seduced by his ‘burns and reap the rewards with a possible Longoria/Howard tandem.
Btw, I was very surprised to see you draft Meche and Burnett considering you advise us commenters to avoid them like the plague. Any explanation?

No worries, Razzball is literally what I’m drafting by. Anything else is just supplementary and I know drafts can be fickle (especially when you did that in October). Plus, i did a little background check, if you will, when I first encountered this site about a month ago by comparing your pre- and post-season rankings and you passed with flying colors. Haven’t looked back since.
Did you also do their 2010 projections or just their blurbs?

@Simply Fred: I think your assessments are pretty right on. 1st 4 guys, strong. Stewart won’t be that low in an RCL, but that seems about right for a bunch of ESPN hucksters. Headley’s fine, but you realize he really might not be that good. I mean, he’s just okay. Nolasco is a steal there. I think your fellow drafters may be a little iffy. Hamels fine, but Peavy was unnecessary there. You don’t need three back to back pitchers. Strong staff overall though and good hitting. If Borbon and Stubbs don’t work out you’ll obviously be in trouble for speed, but hopefully they do work out.

@Grey: Thanks. Yeah, quality of drafters suspect. Wasn’t seeing that kind of availability most drafts. At R20 for my 3B I’m not expecting much.
RE: 3 pitchers that high. Having trouble there. If I pick another OF then I would have one less OF later, and I need both Borbon and Stubbs. Option at 3B that level is M. Young, bleh. Basically, don’t know who to put in the 5 hole instead.

Hi grey, hoping for a little advice. I am in a 12 team, 2 catcher and 5 outfielder NL only league. I was offered a 3 for 1, getting a combo of andy laroche elijah dukes, jeremy affeldt and a #7 pick for either wandy rodriguez or ubaldo jiminez. I’m in a good place with pitching but weak on hitting and I’ve basically nixed trading ubaldo as ive got him for $2. but what about hopping off the wandwagon?

Grey- I have 6 of my 7 keepers decided– MCab, Werth, J Upton, Sandoval, McCann, Alexei– For my 7th spot I’ve been leaning towards Wainwright, but I can trade him for Pedrioa. WHo would you rather keep, Pedrioa or Wainwright?

@Eddy: I think Sizemore will take over that spot. Don’t think Jackson has displayed strong enough performance in minors to expect immediate success. His .300/.354/.405 not likely to transfer well–immediately. Sizemore’s .308/.389/.500 more likely to stick at the top end of the order.

starting on tuesday …. yay !
my cable provider includes this channel as part of the basic package , and even though they repeat a lot of shizz (the way espn did , when it 1st opened up shop) , i watch it everyday .
tonight is a re-broadcast of the 2008 ALCS game 7 .
earlier this week , al leiter and harold dufus had the upton brothers on .
nice interview .
nice kids .
and some of us noticed that j-up was wearing old-school , low-cut ,

@danimal35: Think you did quite well sir. Don’t see any glaring wine before it’s time.
Granderson is good value there; nothing at that round would be better.
RP is the weak link. Again, understand you won’t find much those late rounds. I’m not sold on Drew’s bounce back. There is some value late in SS SB with A. Escobar or E. Cabrera. You might look at grabbing a quite solid RP at Drew’s spot and getting your SS later. ??
If that doesn’t meet your needs, the Dempster/Danks level is another opportunity. The RP runs seem to be starting R13 to 14-ish. You should be able to get a decent RP there. J. Sanchez would be a better pick than either Dempster or Danks and he’s been available R19.
