For Goodness Sake, Delgado’s Got The Hippy Hippy Ache
Carlos Delgado might as well enjoy a Cocktail or two as he’s the latest member of the new hip injury (double entendre) – the torn labrum. It took A-Rod two months to come back from this and he’s younger, in better shape, and a bigger poser (not sure how the 3rd point is relevant, just felt like saying it). If you drafted Delgado, you’ve got to just let him go. No use clogging up a DL slot except if you’re in a real deep league. Forget the Mets replacements for now – Tatis, Murphy, Kranepool, etc – as none of them have 1B eligibility. Hopefully you have another player for the 1B slot and can just grab the best 1B/3B available for cornerman. Anyway, here’s what else we saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Rickie Weeks – Weeks’s out-for-the-seasony is epidemic, ya’ll. Hardy likes to hit 2nd and Hart or Counsell would make sense in the leadoff spot. If Gamel plays 3rd, Counsell or Hall would be play 2nd. Hall would get a nice boost in value if he gains 2nd base eligibility, which is to say he would go from no value to some value in deep leagues. This Weeks injury should be a wake up call for all Blalock owners. One day he’s hitting homers, the next day he has a root canal that sidelines him indefinitely. Okay, Weeks, Nomar and Baldelli offer you a ride, but the catch is you can’t wear your seatbelt, do you accept the ride?
Mat Gamel – HR and error yesterday. In 2007, Milwaukeeans called that The Braun Exacta. Defense be damned! Gamel got the start at 3rd. I propose the Brewers correct Gamel’s defensive problems like how the Rockies went to the humidor. They should put The Vacuum in Miller Park. Whenever the visiting team is hitting, you turn The Vacuum to suck and watch as everything is hit to the right side. The Vacuum sucks so Gamel doesn’t blow.
Kyle Lohse – 4 IP, 4 ER. He’s not good. Wait, do I hear an echo? Oh, no, that’s just me the last five times he’s pitched.
Scott Richmond – 7 IP, 0 ER, 7 Ks. Was a good match-up, still not a fan of his going forward.
Ross Detwiler – Was 0-3 with a 2.98 ERA in Double-A. Sounds like he should be a starter for the Nats! I wouldn’t go after him outside of NL-Only leagues and even there, I’d want to see more… On someone else’s team.
Joel Hanrahan – 1 IP, 3 ER. Hanrahanahanananan got Kazaamahamahammed!
Glen Perkins – 2/3 IP, 6 ER. Got flapjacked by the Yanks and now is being sent to the Disgraceful List with elbow inflammation. I don’t know who the Twins end up replacing him with, but two guarantees: 1) over/under on K/start will be 1.5 and 2) you don’t need to pick him up.
Carl Crawford/B.J. Upton – Rays scored a kajillion runs and they went a combined 0-for-6. What a bunch of ticker teases!
Ross Ohlendorf – 5 IP, 5 ER. The only thing standing in the way of The Dorf is his lackluster pitching.
Carlos Gomez – 4-for-8 in the last two games with a steal. He’s starting for about a week with Young out. Those desperate for steals may be able to sneak in a few for the next couple of days.
Mark Teixeira – 2 HRs yesterday with 4 RBIs. Almost June? Yup, makes sense.
Jason Marquis – 8 IP, 1 ER. The Marquis de Sad did it to the Braves royally.
Bobby Abreu – 0-for-2, zero home runs and 14 steals on the year. The Angels ended up with the 2nd coming of Reggie Willits.
Kendry Morales – 2 home runs yesterday to bring his total to 8 on the year while batting .289. I realize he’s been yawnstipating in his career, but he’s having a solid year and could end up with 25/100/.280.
Russell Branyan – Hit his 10th homer on the year. Hey, cheap power, say hello to your mother for me.
Vladimir Guerrero – Coming back from his torn pectoral to be the Angels’ Designated Hacker. You have to think the pectoral plays some role in swinging. Wouldn’t bet that Stitch Tits is going to deliver much more than an empty .280 average.
John Lackey – 5 IP, 4 ER. Aren’t you glad you held onto him for two months? His owners probably wish he would’ve just pegged Ichiro to start the game (Ichiro’s owners probably wish that too). I think this was just rust with Lackey, I wouldn’t be too concerned.
Brandon Morrow – Pitched the 6th and 7th, giving up 2 earned runs. The way he’s going he’s going to be pitching the 3rd inning soon.
Randy Wolf – Is he Randy for a win or Hungry for a win? Either way, 7 2/3 IP, 2 ER should buy a brotha a win. To give you a glimpse into my soul, I own Wolf in three leagues and I haven’t been disappointed at all. 56 1/3 IP, 46 Ks, 1.07 WHIP and a 2.72 ERA. If someone was willing to give you Wolf for say the random rookie nookie you have (Zimmermann, Gamel, Parra), I’d do it. I think it’s possible too, because Wolf gets no love. In fact, I grabbed him off waivers in one of my ‘pert 15 team leagues.
Garrett Atkins – Getting benched by Hurdle. Mrs. Garrett’s Atkins diet was more successful than Atkins this year.
Phil Coke – Got the save as Mo needed rest after pitching on Sat and Sun. The last time Coke got credit for a Yankee save was when Steve Howe donned the pinstripes.
Joey Votto – Votto’s in the Scripps Clinic for an examination… E-X-A-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N… Examination.

“The Marquis de Sad did it to the Braves royally.” And, of course, he enjoyed it! Excellent stuff as always.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:06 am
Would you deal Loney for Wolf?
May 19th, 2009 at 1:43 am
Cain or Lester for the rest of the season?
May 19th, 2009 at 1:52 am
Now that Vlad is coming off the DL, what do you think will happen to Mike Napoli’s playing time?
May 19th, 2009 at 2:39 am
6th no-decision in his last 7 starts for the Wolfman.
Totally irrelevant to what I just wrote, but if he ever hits a homer, I guess you’d call it a Wolfman Jack.
May 19th, 2009 at 3:46 am
Oops, I forgot to touch third. What a great play by Church.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:14 am
Just wondering if MIL will call up Escobar? CBS has planted the hype about him moving to 2b…
May 19th, 2009 at 4:22 am
What a Joke: Votto is dizzy and Quentins foot is sore? And Haren keeps his regular start date when they shoulda pushed sundays starter to yesterday and he gets rained out: Now my 2 start Haren week is ONE start, crap crap crap….
OH and my Eithier/Kemp Combo went 0-10 last night, can we let manny off the hook a little early?
May 19th, 2009 at 4:44 am
Should I bench Josh Zoltar for tonight’s start to avoid his weak shoulder further weakining my ERA and WHIP?
May 19th, 2009 at 4:55 am
@Grey: Last night you recommended Branyan over Duncan for me, now I’m reading this endorsement for Morales, you think I should make the Duncan for Morales swap instead? That would give me three 1B eligible rotational guys (Swish, D. Lee, and Morales)?
Now onto today’s minor league clubhouse diary…
My first job was with LaPorta’s 1st MLB team… he was flown into our spring training home after the draft along with the other draft picks for a week long rookie workout minicamp and orientation. After the minicamp, LaPorta stayed behind to rehab an injury for a few weeks. Since he had no vehicle with him, he asked me if I would be able to run him to a few places each day where he could run errands, I said no problem, it’s my job, where do you need to go first?
He asks if the Wal-Mart across the way cashes checks because he just got his first player check and wanted to cash it, I said yeah, they do, for a small fee, but it’s nothing outrageous. I run him to Wally World and we’re waiting in line at the bank inside and he asks me what I usually eat or buy as groceries. I go what do you mean, I buy a lot of stuff, he says well back at the hotel we have a microwave, I was thinking of some frozen dinners, I go well you could stock up on some lean cuisines, those aren’t too bad. So he goes, okay, we’ll go check those out after I’m done here.
Then, he taps me on the shoulder and says, hey, you think they’ll cash this check here too? I go what check, he hands it to me, it’s his signing bonus check for something like a million or two, his name on it and Scott Boras’ as well. I look at him and he has this wry smile. I go, why do you have this with you, in this area of town? at this wal-mart? Are you nuts???!?!?! He goes, well I’d rather have it on me at all times than sitting back in my locker at the facility. I go that’s true, but I’m not ready to be a bodyguard, thank God no one knows who the hell you are while we’re standing in line here and he starts laughing. He cashes his player’s check, we run to the frozen food aisle and load up on some lean cuisines and I get him back to the facility in time for the first bud departure.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:56 am
edit last sentence: bus departure.
Enjoy

I’m trying to figure out how to get Lackey off the DL and don’t really have anyone I want to drop. I recently picked up Alexei off of waivers, but I have him on my bench and was hoping to see if he turns it around. I also have Rollins and Peralta but had hoped to use one or two of the now struggling SSs as trade bait later. My other SPs are Haren, Wandy, J. Johnson, Jared Weaver, and Wainwright. My closers are Qualls, Rodney, Downs, and Franklin. I could roll with 3 closers but don’t want to drop one on the waiver wire because there is definite value for all closers in my league. Maybe I could package a closer and another SP and upgrade starting pitching or a closer and position player (Cantu at 3rd most likely?) and upgrade? Any suggestions? The Peavy owner in my league needs help with saves. The owner who most needs saves has Lester, Verlander, Zimmerman at 3B.

@Grey: Your third point of A-Rod being a “poser” is unquestionably relevant. He is the embodiment of a “poser.” A Poser in Pinstripes. Like the kids on the corner that say they’re a punk because they wear a Ramones tee shirt. In light of everything, can’t he just humbly just drop the damn bat, put his head down and swiftly circle the bags? No. He’s got to stylishly waft the lumber, nod to a dugout of less than admiring “teammates”, Rocky statue around first, fist pump around second, hurl his helmet skyward on the way home, and not clean up the pie smegma of his face (which also has to stop) for the post game interview because “he loves it.” That’s six “poses” in one round tripper. In May. This dude is a Tool. & a Poser in Pinstripes. Wish I owned him though.
All things being equal if you had a DL spot that would not be spent on Delgado or Weeks, who do you think might have more overall value Kelvim, Burrell, Conor Jack, or none of the above?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:27 am
grey in a 12 team h2h drop yunel for gamel?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:30 am
How much you liking Gaudin at home against SF? Enough to drop Rich Hill and Parra to accommodate him? (I have Hill on the DL so I’d have to drop him. Bright side is I could al so pick up Jesus Flores in the process)
May 19th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Stop Medlen’ in Tommy’s business!!!
Seriously, end this fast so I don’t have to consider dropping Hanson for you. Do the Jo-Jo.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:46 am
“The last time Coke got credit for a Yankee save was when Steve Howe donned the pinstripes.” … hilarious.
Any thoughts on starting Martis at home against Pit? (12 team H2H, need 35 innings) What about Gaudin tomorrow at Petco against San Fran?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Haren at $30 or Beckett at $24 the rest of the season? And Mariano at $22 or Bell at $15?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:47 am
@Tony B.: i would just about take morales over d lee and swisher on a daily basis.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:48 am
@SRM: i think the problem isn’t Medlen, it’s Glavine. Monitoring his status every day, cause Hanson is still available in our league. I really don’t know what their plan is with Hanson, if Glavine recovers and get the job done. Kawakami in the Bullpen? Heard guys mention, he’s too expensive for that. JarJar, Lowe and the Silent Assassin are out of question…
May 19th, 2009 at 5:48 am
@Mann of Sandd: haren. bell.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:49 am
@Billy: Escobar’s sucked in the minors this year, so that’s gonna hurt his chances. Still, he projects to be one of the best defensive shortstops in the majors, so who knows if they’ll do that over Gamel’s black hole 3B defense.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:53 am
@Tony B.: Outstanding story. Outstanding!
May 19th, 2009 at 5:54 am
@ThePoonTycoon: Yeah, that’s kinda the feeling I was having in my gut. D. Lee has bought himself a few starts with that 4-5 day over the weekend, thing is, those few starts he will prob go 2-12 with 1 rbi
May 19th, 2009 at 5:55 am
@Mann of Sandd: Haren, Bell
May 19th, 2009 at 5:59 am
@Tony B.: Good little story there. Made a quick early morning chuckle.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:59 am
@Tony: Manny. Time off for strange behavior?
Since the suspension, Ethier’s OPS has dropped 160 points, he’s only got 1 XB and 2 RBI. I miss April.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:01 am
@Tony B.: Great story. I have a couple of friends that currently work for the Scranton Wilkes – Barre Yankees. I’ve heard a couple of good stories from the clubhouse.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:12 am
I put Glen Perkins in my line up last night. I wasnt fun seeing him get pounded. The dude sucks.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Does anyone believe in Scott Baker? I know Grey’s not a believer. I’m thinking of trading Wainwright for Baker and Bailey (to get some saves), but I don’t know if it’s worth it. Grey?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:16 am
That pederast Hanrahan is bucking for a demotion.
Somebody protect Prince Fielder….hey how about Gamel?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:23 am
@Tony B – Keep saving this stuff, and you may have a book. With a bit more raunchy material, it could be the Minor League version of Ball Four
“This is your last chance,” “And I’m not talking about one of those Major League Baseball Steve Howe kind of last chances.” (Leslie Nielsen to Anna Nicole Smith, Naked Gun 33 1/3.)
Who knew that in his mid-thirties, Abreau would become SAGNOF?
@Grey – I presume that I bench Dempster tomorrow at St. Louis, and Cecil at Boston?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:24 am
@Tony B.: Great Story Tony B! Did Gathright ever pay you the money he owes you? Inquiring minds want to know.
BTW y’all — is there an official “cut bait” date on Alexei? I was able to snag Peralta and Alexei is just sitting there on my bench reminding me of what a bad 5th round pick I made.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:24 am
@Tom: Tom, personally I think Baker is getting somewhat of a bad rap. He’s pitched great in his last three starts, save for two disastrous innings. Gotta think that will even out somewhat.
That said, not sure if Bailey is where I’d turn to for saves.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:25 am
“The last time Coke got credit for a Yankee save was when Steve Howe donned the pinstripes.” Brilliant. And damn funny.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:27 am
@Tom:
I believe in Baker. I just like Wainwright more. And I’m not sure, if Bailey is good enough to do that trade. I wouldn’t do it. Guess it depends on how urgent you need saves…
May 19th, 2009 at 6:28 am
so what’s the story behind this Russel Branyan guy? anyone got any background on the homeboy?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:31 am
@Jareth Cutestory: Awesome name. Showtime is running a Zak Braff/Jason Bateman/Amanda Peet flick called “The Ex” that is totally worth the watch to see Bateman play a wheelchair-riddled villain trying to ruin Braff’s life.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:31 am
Just lost Weeks for the year. Was offered Pedroia/Oswalt for Halladay. Currently trotting out Kendrick at 2B but he’s been so boring his owner dropped him last week (good foresight on my part? oh wait, Weeks always gets injured).
May 19th, 2009 at 6:32 am
@Denys: nevermind this. just caught up with the wikipedia article. hilarious – his nickname is 3TO – he’ll either draw a walk, strike out, or hit a monster home run.
glad to have him on my team
May 19th, 2009 at 6:34 am
“Hey, cheap power, say hello to your mother for me.”
Nothing like getting Mark Wahlberg’s voice stuck in my head at 8:30 AM. Thanks Grey.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:38 am
@mc serch: He never paid, sneaked out, caught a cab, next day he was activated from the DL.
@Pops: Yep, lotsa stories, some I’ve even forgot about
@Paulie Allnuts: Prob could do a book, just don’t want sued, haha. Stories all in good fun though.
@Gareth: Thanks!
@timSTi: Glad I could help!
May 19th, 2009 at 6:39 am
@mc serch: I’m gonna ride alexie down in a burning flame of glory, i’m not cutting him loose til sept….
thank god i traded a bag of dirt for him, losing a bag of dirt isn’t that bad…
@bobbo: i’d take that, not really liking Oswalt, but Pedroia is solid….
May 19th, 2009 at 6:46 am
i’ve seen people saying “start CARP weds”
i’m not, thoughts? First game back from an injury and its vs. the CUBS?
No thanks
May 19th, 2009 at 6:47 am
@Tony: His other SP options are Lilly, Edwin Jackson, and Danks so I don’t really think there’s any better options for a counter. Only thing I could try is replacing Halladay with Haren.
(My SP is pretty solid with Halladay, Haren, Vazquez, Slowey, Ervin Santana, and Big Unit on a short leash)
May 19th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Extra Minor Clubhouse Story in honor of Branyan, I was gonna save this but it’s appropriate with the Branyan banter this morning…
My first year with that certain NL Team was 2 years ago, we had just signed Russell to a minor league deal, I believe before he was with us, he was with Tampa. He came into our office the first week of spring training to get outfitted (jersey, pants, belts, socks, hat, helmet, etc). So we get him everything he needs, then we realize we haven’t had him try on a batting helmet yet.
Russell says (in his southern twang dialect), “Aww man don’t chu’ worry about it, don’t need one.” The staff all look at each other, we’re like you don’t need a helmet? You’re taking live BP in 20 minutes and you have an intersquad tomorrow? “Nah man, don’t need one, didn’t have one in Tampa. Then one of our player development guys chimes in, “Hey Russ, we think you’re gonna need a helmet, just take one please.” Russ obliged…
About a month later, at the start of the Triple-A season, me and a few staff guys are sitting around in the clubhouse having some breakfast watching Sportscenter, it’s probably around 10AM, we have a game later that evening at 7PM. All of a sudden Russ walks in, “Hey fellas, how you enjoying your day?” We’re good Russ, what’s up why are you here right now we all ask in unison, (no one ever shows up for a 7pm game until at least 2-3PM)
“Oh, I just wanted to come in and take some cuts on the off day.” We go, Russ, sorry to burst your bubble, but we play tonight. “No shit, you serious”? Yea we’re pretty sure. “Well, shit, I guess I’ll see you guys later then.” Yep, see ya Russ!
Disclaimer: HE IS THE BEST GUY EVER, such a good guy, down to earth and would do anything for anyone.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:54 am
Wolf or Chris Young?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:00 am
@bobbo: i’d flip Haren in there, you’ve gotten 8-10 solid starts out of him, we all know his second halfs are 4.00 era ish…. I own Haren and i’m gonna give him about another month then try and flip to an unsuspecting victim!
May 19th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Worth sending an Atkins for Lester offer just to see? Or is that insulting?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:02 am
@Tony: Thanks for the advice, you confirmed my gut feel.
Also, Jorge de la Rosa or Big Unit from here on out?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:09 am
@Billy: The Brewers have said they aren’t calling up Escobar anytime soon, but they are giving him some starts at 2B in the minors, for what that’s worth. Not really worth owning this season either way, unless your league scores web gems.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:12 am
@Tony B.: thats awesome man, didnt even know he had a game! so funny…. I am sure there are some really good guys. Some guys actually are normal/down to earth and play because they love it, not for the money and fame.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:26 am
Grey, you are giving Kendry Morales Joey Votto’s numbers?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:31 am
@Tom: Don’t do that. Bailey hasn’t even been named 100% the closer, as Wuertz and him seem to be neck-and-neck. Also, Wainwright is way better than Baker, even if Baker returns to respectability. I think the floor for Baker is a 3.7 ERA, but I’d bet on a 4.1. Wainwright could end up in the 3.3 range if things slide his way. That’s worth far more than Bailey, K rates held similar.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:31 am
@cubbies299: and that’s coming from someone that does have some faith in Baker
May 19th, 2009 at 7:35 am
I’ll ask again, sorry for sounding a bit winny. Loney for Wolf, I get wolf.
I am having trouble assessing Loney’s value. I have Dunn and Votto in a 20 team mix with extended stats with a heavier emphasis on pitching. I just don’t think Wolf keeps this up.@bobbo: De La Rosa
@mgeoffriau: Atkins for Lester is a sucker punch low blow.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:36 am
tough line up deciscion tonight in my Util spot
Berkman vs Bush (career 11-32 against him and he’s 8 for his last 15 with 1 HR 5 RBI and 5 runs)
Or
Chush Davis vs Dontrelle Willis – nuff said right there…should be a walkathon and prob at least 4-5 innings against the tigers pen (he is 1 for his last 11 tho)
May 19th, 2009 at 7:38 am
@Teef: I go with Lance Pants.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:41 am
@Tony: love hearing stuff like that about russ,good ole boys deserve great things.keepem coming
May 19th, 2009 at 7:45 am
@Teef: The Big Puma is the better bet. Bush gives up at least one HR a game – trust me, I have him on my team.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:47 am
Looking for some thoughts on Shoppach. Do I ride his three starts a week in a deep league and wait for VMart to get traded? His empty spot is kind of driving me nuts. Best catcher on the wire is Ruiz or Diaz from Pittsburgh. No joke.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:48 am
@Teef: I go Lance. Willis is still a lefty.
@Stephen: You say it favors pitching, then Wolf is the guy right? Loney seems zapped of power and the next month or so without Manny although it won’t kill him certainly won’t help. Wolf doesn’t have to keep this up either, you can’t expect him to just start sucking but you can expect him to regress to his mediocre stats that you figured he would at the beginning of the season. And in a league favoring pitching I’d figure that’s worth it.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:49 am
@stehpen/Tony B
I’ll prob go with Lance but friendly wager – lance will hit no more than 1 single tonight and Davis has at LEAST 1/4 with a HR
or course if i had davis in the lineup over lance – i’d reverse their names in my previous statement
May 19th, 2009 at 7:53 am
@bpasinko: Thanks. I have been thinking that. Just am reluctant to see Wolf regress hard core and screw me over.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:58 am
@bobbo: jdlr hands down
@Zebo: no reason to expect they don’t end up similar. votto might pick up a few more walks and his average might be a little higher, but considering you probably either picked morales up off waivers or drafted him as a flyer late (like i did), he’s probably more “valuable”.
@DrEasy: Thanks!
@Stephen: Sure
@Drev: Cain, but they’re very close.
@Kevin: Napoli’ll lose some PT.
@Steve: Ha!
@vinko: As I said in the forums, I liked that then Sean Green high-fived him in the dugout.
@Billy: I doubt it.
@sean: I wouldn’t.
@Tony B.: Stick with Branyan. Great stories!
@ScoutAbout: Hmm… Maybe trade Wainwright and Rodney for Verlander or Peavy? Or Rodney and Cantu for Zimmerman?
@zombie: Nice rant. Burrell.
@mikey boy324: Sure
@cubbies299: I like Gaudin there and you’re going to have to make a move sometime.
@SRM: Ha!
@jerkstore: Thanks… I’d start them both.
@Mann of Sandd: Haren and Bell
@.().: Thanks!
@Mr. Rickey: Wolf, but it’s very close and I could go either way.
@mgeoffriau: Sure.
@Marr: “web gems” — Ha!
@Zebo: Votto’s got more upside.
@Teef: Berkman
@RT: Ride Shoppach.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:01 am
kendry morales, casey blake, or gary sheffield for my utility spot to replace delgado?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:04 am
@nick m.:
Normally, I would say Blake. But I have been riding Morales in my UTIL spot all year and loving it. He kills righties. And Blake is hurt at the moment.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:04 am
@mgeoffriau: That offer should get a, “Doode?!”
@Zebo: Last night Hippo was telling me to ask, “WWGD?” About a week before Grey suggested Kendry I picked him up in the RCL. I am now looking at it as my first Grey moment because I am sure other commenters in the Original Recipe league have been looking for him. Usually it is the other way around.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:11 am
@Stephen: @BSA: That bad, huh? Man I hate seeing Garrett Atkins on my roster. Ah well, if he acts insulted by the offer I’ll just play the “Wait, you thought that was a real offer? No way, man, I was just being funny.” card.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:16 am
@mgeoffriau:
My four year old pulls that card and says, “Just Foolin’!”
May 19th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Do you trade Capps/Bengie Molina for Lidge if you have Mauer raking at your C position?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:19 am
@mgeoffriau: I dont think its insane? Atkins sucks and Lester has been pitching horrible? did l miss a good start from lester? is atkins hurt?
the dudes ERA is almost 7, he’s given up MULTIPLE HR’s in 50% of his starts (4 of 8). To be honest I dont think the guy is gonna make a stink about it. He probably wont accept it for the fact there’s probably a better chance Lester bouncing back than Atkins, especially since all signs pointed to atkins declining again this year and the chance he gets moved out of coors (which all of us Holliday owners are loving how that works out).
Shoot it to the guy, worst he does is hits decline….
Moral: you shouldn’t have drafted atkins to start with! HA!
May 19th, 2009 at 8:20 am
@bobbo: too much, especially with Lidges knee issues.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:22 am
@Tony:
The beauty of sending out trades and accepting or declining. If it sticks oh well you win. If it doesn’t than you get to start a trade conversation and maybe put a small package together.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:24 am
@Tony: Yeah, I hated Atkins from the moment I clicked “Draft this player”. I freaked out because I had just missed out on Votto by 2 spots and 1B was getting way too thin…..my draft went pretty well overall but I wasn’t prepared for that. All of the mock drafts I did, I had no problem getting Votto where I wanted.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:25 am
@BSA: exactly, i’ll send out about anything as a jump start, i mean i could just email the guy but i kinda like to explain what i’m doing and go from there… One guy in my league got so pissed about how I work, oh well…. Its how i do business and since i’m in first place, business is GOOD.
Now if votto could get undizzy, quentin could get some dr. scholls, and it would quit raining in florida i’d be a little happier this week.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:26 am
@BSA: Heh, I love trading. I love putting together an offer and waiting with anticipation. I love getting emails from Yahoo that start with “This trade has been…”. I love it even more when I get 2 emails at the same time because that means a trade was accepted.
I blame this (as well as many other things) on the untold hours I spent playing Baseball Mogul 2002, trying to build superteams by robbing the other teams blind in trades.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:27 am
@mgeoffriau: yeah i took him in the 5th/6th since i was at the end of my 12 teamer, i was not waiting to “see” if he came back in the 7th…. Alexie and Davis got snagged before me, so when votto was my only crush left i snagged, thank god i got votto out of those 3…. so far anyways.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:31 am
@Tony B.: Fantastic stories.
@anybody: The Marquis is on waivers. His history doesn’t back up his hot start, and he never strikes anyone out, but I’m considering dropping Origami Kawakami for him?
Kawakami has been mostly awful, but his K rate has actually been quite good, which gives me hope that he’ll turn it around. Thoughts?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:34 am
@Thunder Dan: You know it’s a deep league when I’m saying a guy with a 4.75 ERA is having a “hot start.” But other than his two really, really bad starts, he’s been pretty good.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:38 am
@Tony: That is what i was thinking, but my ethics paper trumped explaining it like that. I haven’t liked Atkins since I traded him away last year. Regressing almost uniformly across the board since 2007, I would have avoided him at all costs. The team with Atkins in my league in deeply entrenched in last place…
May 19th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Got offered Bay for Crawford. Who do you like for the rest of the year (5×5 12 team mixed)?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:40 am
@Stephen: yeah the best is in the past for atkins i think….
its hard letting go of guys that were monsters, some people just can’t do it, gotta move on to the newest, younger, next best thing….
What do people think Longoria’s ADP will be next year?
I’m guessing #6?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:43 am
@Tony: Thanks for the advice on Lidge. Who would you target with Capps/Molina in terms of RP. Capps has been killing me recently.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:45 am
@Tony: What kills me is going back and looking at the draft results……Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman were still on the board when I spazzed out and grabbed Atkins in a panic.
@Ricky Bobby: Crawford for steals, Bay for everything else.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:53 am
@mgeoffriau: ughhh that sucks, i can’t believe Dunn went in the 9th round in my deep 12 teamer. People just got sick of watching him hit .240 i think? Sick so far this year, the 40 bombs, 100 walks are always there but that average in our league is killer, we play 10 offensive cats, 10 pitching cats H2H… individual hits are tallied, so a guy that hits for low avg like him usually sucks ya down somewhat….
@bobbo: I dont know what you’re gonna get with capps/molina? just depends if the other owner really needs a catcher. Its only gonna happen if you find the right owner…
May 19th, 2009 at 8:54 am
my best friend took greinke in the 16th round, SICK
May 19th, 2009 at 8:56 am
@Tony: Yeah thats what I thought. Unfortunately the guy who really needs a catcher only has Lidge and Jenks as available relievers. I guess maybe I can go for Jenks.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:57 am
@Ricky Bobby:
Bay for sho. Crawford = 1 Category. Bay = 4. Easy call.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:01 am
@mgeoffriau: In my 20 team league I got them both. Just recently I traded Zimmerman for Uggla. I am regretting that trade. I expected Uggla to snap out of it sooner rather than latter and Zimmerman to regress hard core. Good thing I traded him at game 29 in his 30 game hit-streak. Though I am sill wishing it would have been later that I traded ZImmerman
ps the trade was my Zimmerman and Holland for his Uggla and Tony Pena (our league counts holds, and I am a big believer of MRs with good ratios).
@Tony: The team that drafted Greinke in my league just flipped him for Hanely. He now has Reyes and Hanley
May 19th, 2009 at 9:08 am
Alciedes Escobar? Anyone want to wager on how long the Brewers wait before they bring him up?
May 19th, 2009 at 9:09 am
@Ricky Bobby: I think the real question to ask is, do you need steals that badly? Bay will put up more HR’s similar AVG and more RBI’s. Unless you are completely hurting on steals I’d prefer the Bay side.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:12 am
@bobbo: offer him JUST molina for Jenks?
May 19th, 2009 at 9:14 am
@Stephen: for Hanley? wow who got drunk and hit accept? thats ludacris….
And we’re not talking beer and chicken LUDA!
Greinke is good, but he’s not Hanley good, that guy made out….
May 19th, 2009 at 9:18 am
@Tony:
That’s a veto in my league. Wow.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:21 am
@RT: Yeah I couldn’t justify that either. I’ve seen all the “cy young comparisons” but lots of pitchers start out hot and fade… Volquez 2008 anyone? Maybe he wasn’t as lights out as Greinke this year, but the dude was crazy good, and he slowed as expected.
I just can’t see that going thru for a proven stud like Hanley.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:30 am
@Tony:
Hanley was #1 in many leagues. I just don’t that deal. Mind you, I value arms less than bats unless you are in a shallow league.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:32 am
@Tony: A fool is right. Now only does our league count CG SHO, but the now Hanley owner is, and has been in 1st place most of the year. But here is the ridiculousness of the this trade
Greinke, scott linebrink and andy Pettitte for Hanley and Derek Lowe…… really? For a 5th place team to trade that to a 1st place team is ridiculous!
My favorite trade in my league this year is Delgado and Graza for Tex and Jim Johnson. this was less then 24 hours from when Delgado was officially out.
@IowaCubs: 13 days… June 1st
May 19th, 2009 at 9:45 am
@Stephen: who is dealing 1st rounders for a 10th rounder and a nobody? Thats a joke, how many team league is this?
May 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am
I’m been deperately trying to avoid paying for saves, but is giving up C Davis & Scherzer for Pedroia & Hoffman an equitable deal?
(i’m in first by 20 HR and close to last in saves, several of which have come from Percival so my situation could/should be worse). I have Brox and Aardsma too in a 12-teamer, but would rather not punt.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:53 am
SAGNOF Alert!*** The Tigers just recalled Wilkin Ramirez to replace Magglio on the roster. He’s probably a 10/20 guy if he gets full time.
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=paF03508&position=OF
May 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am
@SRM: I think you are getting the shaft. Try Scherzer for Hoffman, but remember that the Hoff isn’t what he use to be. That and I think Grey talked about how overrated Pedroia is, and I would avoid him if at all possible. He may get decent numbers, but he wont get your HR or RBI that davis has the potential for. Also, being up 20hr right now wont translate into staying that way either.
@Tony: A 20-team league with an 8×10 league
Hitting categories
ave, r, 2b, 3b, hr, rbi, sb, bb
Pitching-
ip, w, cg, sho, bb, k, sv, hld, era, whip
Not quite a fair league with cg and cg sho equaling winning the lottery. If you remove those from my league, the 1st place team drops to 5-7th
May 19th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Two Quickies:
Need a 2B (Kelly Johnson sucks); 16-team H2H-Points keeper league; Trade Mat Gamel for Orlando Hudson? Or should I be able to get more for Gamel?
Who do you like more moving forward: Adam LaRoche or Kendry Morales?
Thanks
May 19th, 2009 at 9:56 am
@Mike: I’m not sure who is going to be buying Gamel with the word being he’s going to be sent down after interleague play. As soon as they say he’s starting for the rest of the year people might get interested, but then you might not want to sell.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:58 am
@Stephen: speaking of the delgado trade, i was in a similar situation, trying to swing weeks for cueto along with some 2010 draft pick swapping (5 keepers). he told me what he’d accept, i decided to haggle even though deep down i knew i’d agree to his terms if it came to it, he said propose my deal and he’d think about it over the weekend. then the wrist happened. if i had just accepted from the get go instead of trying to be cute i would have a nice SP and he’d be stuck with weeks.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:00 am
@SRM: get someone healthier than hoffman
May 19th, 2009 at 10:03 am
@Doc: I got someone interested in Gamel right now. He’s not offering Hudson, but he’s desperate. I own A-Rod, so I don’t need Gamel in the near term, but I like his future. A-Rod isn’t a keeper, but I can keep Gamel for the next three years.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:05 am
@ThePoonTycoon: That royally blows. Too bad Weeks breaks more than a toy made in China.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:07 am
16-team, H2H-Points league:
What do you think of Adam LaRoche for Alberto Callaspo? LaRoche will come around sooner or later, but I need a 2B. Can Callaspo keep it up?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:08 am
@Mike: I think it’s worth getting as much as you can for him right now.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:12 am
@Doc: You’re talking about Gamel, right?
I hear ya, but I’m not sure they’ll send him back down. I think if they brought Gamel up before Interleague, then he’s here to stay. Weeks injury just makes it even more necessary that he stays up.
What say you Grey? Gamel sell or hold?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:15 am
(sorry asking almost the same thing three times…but there’s no way to revise previous posts)
H2H-points – Give up Adam LaRoche or Russell Branyan for Callaspo?
@Mike: Sell, but depends on what you’re getting for him, obviously.
@Mike: Callaspo’s good for average, nothing else. So if you need that, trade LaRoche.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Forgetting about position eligibility, is it Ok to drop Crispie Young for Nick Johnson? Laroche is painful and I think my OF is fine with Beltran, Rios, Bruce, JuanPierreWood and Melky (4OF start).
May 19th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Trade Adam Jones/F-Her/Volstad for Texiera/Rios/Danks ?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:46 am
@Eric C.: i like the tex/rios/danks side.
if you need help with batting.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:47 am
@Grey:
Many thanks. It’s either Gamel for Orlando Hudson or LaRoche for Callaspo. I’d like to hang onto Gamel if I can, and Callaspo has been decent in this points format, so I’ll give that a shot.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Burrell and Delgado dropped in a couple of my leagues. What kind of worth do you see both having the rest of the season?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:50 am
@Eric C.: I also like the Tex side. He should keep hitting bombs to right field. Rios should keep improving and Danks has shown some brilliance and some crappiness.
@JRT: Go ahead, but Krispie has the most upside and I wouldn’t do it.
@Doc: Burrell will have value.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:50 am
@Doc: I stashed Burrell on my DL spot just in case he goes on one of his insane tears. Delgado is old and had hip surgery, yuck.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am
@Denys: I actually probably need more pitching than hitting (F-Her is basically my “ace”), but Volstad is someone I plan to drop in the future.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:53 am
In my 5 x 5, 12 Team Mixed Keeper League I am still working on a trade for Lincecum…… please rank the following potential targets in order of preference: Kinsler, Wright, A. Jones, Cabrera, Braun, Ellsbury, Lind, Kemp, J. Upton…….
May 19th, 2009 at 10:56 am
@Euroalien: I like Cabrera, Kinsler, Wright, Braun, Kemp, Jones, Upton, Lind, Ellsbury, but that also depends on your positional and statistical needs.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:03 am
@Euroalien: wright, braun, cabrera, kinsler (injury-risk), (bj?) upton, jones/kemp, lind, (justin?) upton, ellsbury
top 3 are essentially interchangeable imo. if kinsler had put together a couple of full seasons he’d be right there with them or maybe ahead of them.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:05 am
Which side do you like in 5×5 CC/Harden or Markakis/Shields/Cain?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:09 am
@MJB: MARKAKIS, SHIELDS, CAIN…
I DONT LIKE HARDEN, AT ALL
May 19th, 2009 at 11:12 am
@MJB: I prefer Markakis/Shields/Cain too.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Does Sheffield get more playing time with Delgado out?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Anyone know much about the Tigers’ prospect Ramirez? He’s getting called up with Maggs out (wife is having surgery).
May 19th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Who has the better numbers at the end of 2009:
Alexei Ramirez vs Ben Zobrist
I’m saying Zobrist and it won’t be close, except in regards to stolen bases. I say Zobrist gets him in HR’s, RBI’s, BA, Walks, and Runs.
The (fucking nuts side of me) is ready to drop Alexei outright for Zobrist who is OF-SS-2B eligible in my league, the same exact eligibility Alexei boasts. I’m in 1st place and I’m itching to cause a shockwave in my league with a move like this, haha.
Alexei is simply untradable, I have offered him for the likes of Yunel Escobar and Jose Lopez to name 2.
I know the response will be: You cannot drop him outright, let him get hot and then someone will buy, you might be right, but I’m not so sure everyone will see the motive behind me moving him once he does get going a bit.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:25 am
@Tony B.: i dropped him in a ten teamer, cbs points league, he was just sitting the bench and i was so stacked offensively i had to, killed me inside, but with soria and my other closer hurting i needed to make a pickup
in my other league i traded fernando rodney for alexie and a few guys in the league threw a fit, it went thru, but i think alexie comes around, he’s been sneaking a hit in here and there, and to be honest i’ve watched him play a couple games lately, he’s still free swinging, but the dudes gotten robbed a couple times…. I think he pulls thru, i’d wait at least another 3 weeks, at least…..
too much invested to cut bait 6 weeks in…..
May 19th, 2009 at 11:29 am
to all you guys dropping alexei, just remember that he essentially put up 95% of his numbers last year from june til september. he had 2 HRs and 7 RBIs in april and may.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Thanks for the quick feedback……. If it makes any difference, I need help in all of the hitting categories but mainly Avg, Runs, & SB’s………..
May 19th, 2009 at 11:30 am
I thought Price would be sure to get the call after the Rays pulled Neimann in the fourth last week and Price threw 5 innings of no-hit ball with 9Ks, but has Neimann pushed Price back with his line on Monday night?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Delmon Young got dropped and cleared waiver. Any chance Delmon Young regain his power? Grab him and start the waiting game? Thx.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Who do you like going forward… Matt Cain or Roy Oswalt?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:32 am
@Tony: I drafted him round 23 in 2008, so that was the round he cost me coming into this year (2009) you would assume that at such a high round he would attractive, but that is not the case.
I just have this feeling on Zobrist, if you look at his minor league numbers especially his average and his on base percentages, now with some digustingly sick developing power, we might be seeing the emergence of a guy right before our eyes right now. I realize he’s not a graceful defender, but there are plenty of guys who are not and rake.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:34 am
I got someone on the line willing to give up N. Cruz for my Manny. Cruz sure has taken a dump lately.
Current OF: Sizemore, Ichiro, McLouth, Ethier…Wells riding the pine or Utility.
Thoughts?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:37 am
@Quintero: How deep is the league and who would you be dropping for him?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:40 am
@Tony B.: I don’t disagree with you on how they’ll end up. It’s just a matter of how much playing time Maddon is going to give Zobrist. I know Joe probably loves having him as his multi-positional ace in the hole, but I can’t imagine the Gabe (Gross/Kapler) Gambit keeping him out of right field on a semi-regular basis for too much longer. And he’s been very productive in the time he’s gotten. I leave him in my AL-only lineup all the time, because he always seems to do something positive whether Maddon starts him or not. I’m in a similar pickle with Kazmir, who has also been teh suck. He’s basically untradeable at this point, at least for anything useful, and I don’t know how long I want to use a roster spot on him, at the expense of ditching him and getting someone productive. I’m already stuck with Ziegler; Bob Geren doesn’t even seem to know who his closer is, and it’s pissing me off.
I hold both Alexei and Zobrist for now, but I bench Ramirez and play Ben if you can do it. Alexei is probably going to play one way or the other, because the White Sox are in an offensive tailspin, and he’s going to have the opportunity to come back around. Ozzie has been bouncing Jayson Nix in all over the field, second, third, short, left field, trying to plug his myriad of offensive holes and injuries, so Nix is not going to take his everyday spot there. The Sox also seem reticent to even mention Gordon Beckham as a possibility, but he’d be worth keeping an eye on.
If you just can’t stand the thought of Alexei anymore, trade him for a bag of batting practice balls or just ditch him and be done with it. I think a lot of us would understand.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:40 am
@Matt: My gut says Oswalt. I watched him pitch at Wrigley the other day and his stuff still looked pretty good. But I think many would say Cain. I feel like it is probably a toss up. And that’s definitive!!!
May 19th, 2009 at 11:42 am
@ThePoonTycoon: yeah i know that i was the one who was watching him from spring ball into the season and the min he had a couple multi hit games i snapped him up, the 10 teamer i’m in has some real donkeys in it… Basically one guy plays basketball with me and all my other buddies and asked me and another guy to play, so we go dominate the little people and show them whats up… i dropped him but i’m watching from a short distance… it made it easier i have kinsler in that league, and i got him in the third round? after taking sizemore first and braun 2nd? HMMMM…. thank god that leagues for some cash….
May 19th, 2009 at 11:44 am
I stole this from another site’s forum as it’s pretty interesting info concerning Zobrist…
…he’s had 564 ABs in his major league career…about 1 season…his line with SS eligibility keep in mind…
22 HR, 77 RBI, 10 SB, .231 AVG
aside from the AVG….for a SS those are some pretty beautiful stats for 1 season. now you couple in the fact that all includes his ABSOLUTELY HORRID first 2 years in the bigs. also keep in mind as a minor league player his .AVG and .OBP (the 2 areas he’s struggled with as a pro) are flat out SICK. like mindboggling sick
He walked like 50+ more times than struck out throughout the minors too. You add these pieces of information together and you have the upside of something special imo for a SS eligible player, his .BA/OBP should skyrocket according to the minors. and the power could be legit according to last year and now this year again.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:49 am
@Tony: same here. can’t even remember the schmohawk i had at 2B to start last year, but i picked up alexei about this time last season. then in the offseason i traded him (12 team, 5 man h2h keeper league), now i am trying to trade back for him on the cheap before he gets hot again.
May 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am
@ThePoonTycoon: LOL thats great, sold him high now trying to buy him back LOW!!!
May 19th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Keeper league where guys make massive “dump trades” to get elite keepers, 14 teams. Would you trade Bruce at $3 (can be kept 3 more years at +$4/yr) and M. Harrison ($1, can be kept up to 4 more years, escalating salary beginning in 3rd year) for Haren ($30) and Bell ($15) if you need to stabilize pitching and saves? Or hold out for more?
May 19th, 2009 at 11:56 am
@Doc: Yeah, my gut says Oswalt too, but it is hard to decide. I have Cain and I want to package him with Bruce for an upgrade at SP, but I am having a lot of trouble finding the right SP and the right team that needs Bruce’s HR’s. If I can’t figure something out soon, I will have to drop someone once Dice-K comes off the DL and I would prefer to avoid that. What do you think about Burnett v. Cain?
@sean: I think Price will still be up shortly.
@Quintero: I think you can let him sit on waivers for a few, unless you’re in a league deeper than 12 teams.
@Matt: Oswalt
@Bamboo Cheetah: I’d want Cruz there.
@Mann of Sandd: I’d want more for Bruce.
May 19th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
I just got Peavy for Bell and Marmol, granted it’s a holds league but who cares! The funny thing is that the other person sent me the offer. Gonna pick up Okajima, LOL all the way to the bank…
May 19th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
What the F is up with Votto? “E-X-A-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N”? What am I supposed to glean from that. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be looking for replacements now or kicking back because there’s no worries about Votto.
So what is it?
May 19th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I’m thinking if Randy Johnson can’t get it done at Seattle in his next start, I’m done with him…agree/disagree? Doesn’t seem like he can get a much better match-up than that
@I’m Keith Hernandez: Nice!
@Frank Rizzo: He’s being examined. No word yet.
@Adam: Agree
May 19th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
@I’m Keith Hernandez: Beautiful. My best deal of the year so far was getting Prince and Reynolds for a package built around Nelly Cruz and Adam LaRoche at their peak values, along with some spare parts. Needless to say, the rest of the league wasn’t very pleased.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Cain/Cano or Cain/Hill for Peavy/Mcclouth?
This team had Weeks and has no good backup and I have a lot of MI’s(Cano,Hill,Tulo, and Alexi)
May 19th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
rest of season: Alexei or Bartlett?
May 19th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Anybody heard an update on Jose Reyes? I have Asdrubal in my MI slot that I could slide over and plug Ian Stewart in there, or I could pick up the hot hand in Zobrist to play SS…any opinions?
May 19th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
@Wizo: Depending on your team needs, I’d say Bartlett. I don’t see the power being real, but everywhere else across the board I see him keeping this up. If you’re more interested in power numbers, I’d go with Alexei if you can stomach the rest of the slump and a low average.
@Infamous: I’d want Peavy’s side.
@Adam: Last I heard, he’s supposed to play today.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
@Grey: K, thanks…Zobrist still worth a pickup for his multi-position eligibility? I was my league’s lucky Manny owner, and now it looks like Dukes will miss some time. Add in Ethier’s recent slump, and my OF depth has taken a big time hit. Currently Soriano/Ellsbury/Ethier/Span with no healthy reserves
May 19th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
@Adam: It took me a few minutes of processing and researching to make sure I hadn’t missed something. Nice when all you have to do to make a steal is hit accept.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
@Adam: From Rotowire –
Reyes, who missed his fifth straight start Monday, said an MRI taken that morning revealed swelling in the front of his right leg, below the knee. It is causing swelling and pain all the way to the calf, the NY Daily News reports. Reyes said he’d arrive at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday hoping to play, but unsure if he’d be able to do so. He is able to do everything but run, and with Alex Cora landing on the DL, the Mets called up Ramon Martinez to play short so they will likely give Reyes another day or two to see if he can play before determining if a DL stint is necessary.
May 19th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
@Infamous: Either one of those would be a no-brainer for me. Peavy had some rough outings early, but has returned to his dominant form lately. I guess I haven’t looked much into Hill’s stats to see if he’s really this good or just off to a fast start, but McLouth is no slouch either. Pull the trigger and feel good about it.
@Adam: No idea who you’re dropping for him, but assuming you have someone, sure you can grab him.
May 19th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
@Grey: Even in a H2H league where Manny could carry the team to a fantasy championship?
Or is the optimal word here…could?
May 19th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
You’re near last in saves and you already have Tulo. Your Cl are Rivera and Wilson, do you do S Drew for Nathan?
@Bamboo Cheetah: I don’t know if you have the bats to carry on until Manny comes back, but it sounds like you do. So it’s close. But I’d take the sure thing right now. We have no idea how Manny will return. It’s assumed he’ll be fine, but he’s been less than fine in the past (2007), so if you wanna take the gamble in a H2H league, I can understand it. I’d want Cruz.
@cubbies299: I’d want Nathan there.
May 19th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
@Grey: When you’re sorting through FAs and their various stats, what time period do you use? The last week? Last two weeks. The last month?
Depends on whether you’re in Yahoo or ESPN, obviously…
May 19th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Grey, Maine or Hill?
@Steve: 14 days
@johnson21: Aaron? Shawn? Rich? Benny?
May 19th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
@Grey: Thanks.
BTW, If you have the right music playing, Benny is quicker on the basepaths than Carl Crawford.
@Y’all: Votto not playing today/tonight.
@Steve: Ha! Very true.
May 19th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Would you do Kazmir/Victorino for C Lee?
May 19th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Reports are via twitterland that Jose Reyes will start tonight
@cubbies299: Sure, if you were good on speed.
@Doc: Thanks for the update!
May 19th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Victorino/Lowe/Kazmir or C Lee/Shields
@cubbies299: Lee side.
@cubbies299: That’s assuming these are Carlos Lee, not Cliff Lee.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Going back and forth in trade offers:
in an email he offers me:
grandy/weaver for my BELTRAN, what do you think?
I am thinking of offering my Beltran/Qualls for his Nelson Cruz/granderson?
Thoughts…. need immediate help before i offer this!
Qualls is my ONLY closer who gets me saves, so i’m thinking just punt saves? I hate doing it, and i’m new to ROTO, but i dont know what to do here? I hate losing that elite OF’er, but the grandy/cruz combo would be huge, and would replace a crisp, rasmus, fukudome or whatever other crap is on my lineup right now?
original intent was to get some pitching? i dont know how all this came about….
May 19th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
@Grey: help grey, one centimeter above…. lol
May 19th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
@Steve: @Grey: A Benny Hill reference, beauty! You don’t get that from any other baseball site………..
@Tony Y: Don’t punt saves. Not crazy about the original offer either. Especially not if you’re hurting for outfielders.
@BigFatHippo: Yes, for better or worse.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Masterson was serviceable, thank you sir.
Who would you pick up to replace him ?
–Medlen, reserve Clay Buchholz on bench (current SP are Beckett,Wainright,Parra,Cecil,B.Myers)D.Bush, M.Harrison, M.Palmer, Happ, Uehara, Pelfrey, Hughes, Sneel, Kawakami, Guthrie.
Would you drop either Andrus or Callapso for one of these guys?
Lugo, Bonifacio, Rentería, Burriss
<3
@Schatzi: I’d grab Happ.
If you need steals, I’d lose Callaspo for Burriss.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Can we unring the death knell for Brian Robert’s legs? He just stole his 10th of the year.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
@Grey: WELL i wouldn’t be if Quentin would get his act/foot together and if aramis didn’t go down…. kinda hurting…. but my pitching is hurting worse… I HURT.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
@Grey: You like Happ’s upside more than Shenobi?
I just added him and dropped Uehara, dumb move?
@BigFatHippo: For a fifth or sixth starter, go for the upside with Happ.
May 19th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
A-Rod!
Some of us forgive……..
May 19th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
@Grey: Yup, already did. I actually had Happ about a month ago, was gonna hold him till he got starting status but changed my mind 478 times since then. <————– (I keep track of these things……..)
May 19th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Jay Bruce can’t hit lefties. So I bench him against a premier lefty.
SONOFABENCH!
May 19th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Any good closer gossip lately? Could Madson get any looks in Philly soon? Maybe Lowe in Seattle? Percival losing his hold in TB? In a league deep enough where anybody getting saves this side of Washington is owned, and I’ve already been lucky with Downs and Bailey to a lesser extent this season.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I’ve been smiling lately… Ride on the D-Train!
May 19th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
@Grey: Shields and Johnson looking good. I was very surprised to read that you were down on Shields and Cain so early. Shields has said he wasn’t pitching with his changeup (I think it was the changeup) for the first month and Cain has been a much better 2nd half pitcher. I watch Cain on Sunday Night Baseball, and even though he didn’t have his great stuff, he shut them down.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Hi!
Howard/Peavy
or
Beltran/Soria/Alexei Ramirez
Which side would you prefer?
Thanks!
May 19th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
@TheQuestforMerlin: Howard/Peavy.
@Adam: The guys you mention are fine to own. It’s a lottery, ya know? You just gotta be quick to react. If you really want saves, maybe take a flier on Sampson ’cause Hawkins is a little banged up.
@James: I just searched Shields on the left and found that I own him on two teams. Had no idea that I was down on him.
@JR: I’d get off quickly.
@TheQuestforMerlin: Peavy side.
EDIT: Word.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
@Grey: Wolf yesterday, Shields today. Did you punch the little old lady in line at the Post Office or something?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
@TheQuestforMerlin: Depends on need but if I had Howard/Peavy I would want more than Soria and Alexei right now. Beltran’s a good target if you need OF, but you’re not getting enough.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
@Grey: The “Votto has Lyme’s disease” theory is a bit of good news/bad news in my mind. I actually was thinking the same thing before people started discussing the possibility because I’ve had it myself. The dizziness with Lyme’s isn’t your normal dizziness but there really isn’t a better way to explain it. The good news is today Lyme’s can be treated rather quickly with no lasting effects (I’m not crazy like that one chick from Real World: Seattle) as long as you get to it in time. A week or two of antibiotics and he should be mashing again. Look at me, it didn’t effect my baseball career at all! The bad news is (a) he may have came down with it a long time ago so its already in his immune system to the extent its only manageable, not “eradicable” and (b) it could keep him out for longer than if this was just the swine flu lingering.
Perhaps (of course?) this is all speculation, especially since “they” are saying he doesn’t have the symptoms, but I’m not totally convinced you can write it off as easy as this. If it turns out to be Lyme’s remember who told you so – and if it turns out to be something else, remember I never said he had it.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I meant to include this link with the previous dissertation:
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/FantasySourceFastball/entry/view/24384/votto_still_battling_mystery_illness
@p0rk burn: Oh my God, you’re Irene from The Real World: Seattle. I knew it!
@Steve: Yeah, can’t catch a break at all.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Grey, Maine vs. Rich Hill? Who you like?
May 19th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
@Grey: Any take on Josh Outman? He’s a St. Louis boy, had a great high school career and decent in college at Mo Southern.
I read an article on him before the season and the A’s were pretty high on him but don’t know a whole lot more about him. Other than he’s throwing a gem against Shields right now.
May 19th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
@BigFatHippo: @Grey: @Joel: Cheers for the help!
I’m actually looking to acquire the Howard side. I just have a SB/average concern with giving up Beltran.
So my outfield is currently: Braun, Soriano, Beltran, Cruz & Lind.
Infield: Morneau, Branyan (Beltre), Konerko.
Hopefully he bites, he wants a closer (taken on board Greys concerns with Soria) and a MI. I have Tulowitzki, Ramirez, S Drew and Kendrick.
TQ4M
@johnson21: Maine
@BigFatHippo: Young on a team that won’t give him much run support, not really worth it outside of an AL-Only league. or very deep mixed (15+).
@TheQuestforMerlin: You’re welcome.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
aaaaargh. highly frustrated here. no one in my league will deal with me. i have work a trade or just drop someone outright. anyway, i have two offers out.
cano & victorino for morneau
cano & victorino for rollins
i think i am offering too much. it’s either try above or dump someone outright to activate ervin from the dl. choices are cano, victorino, upton on offense or weaver, garza, franklin, qualls, gonzo.
should i just pull those offers and drop a closer (which one?) OR keep them out there and see if one of the owners bite??
dammit. i’m thinking dumping a closer is a better idea. what say you?
May 19th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
@Grey: My mistake – I thought I recalled you suggesting he wasn’t going to breakout as you expected. Anyway, Cruz, the dude strikes out and doesn’t walk. Is there a specific reason why you think he will not fade out like before? I have been looking at his stats and can only find IFFB% as something that will probably get better.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
@paulzone: You aren’t going to get either of those guys with that 2-fer. Chances are you won’t be able to work a 2-fer at all. You’re probably stuck dumping a closer, but why don’t you try throwing Mike G in a deal? Of your closers he’s the one I like least.
May 19th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Drop Jimenez for Meche or Nolasco? thanks in advance
May 19th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
I can’t believe I’m asking this but is anyone talking about the Dontrelle? He looked damn good tonight at home against the Rangers. Can he possibly return to his old form this year?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
@Pops: Put the easy button down and slowly back away, it’s loaded.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
@G: Meche is safer but less upside, Nolasco’s a mess right now.
I’d hold tight but monitor Meche.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
@Joel – logical reasoning concerning Bruce has cost me almost half his homers. Sometimes I think that I think to much. SONOFABENCH!!!!!!
@BigFatHippo: You are exactly correct! Where else could we get this stuff? Although I bet a lot of guys on this blog don’t remember Benny, and didn’t get the reference…
“Girls are like Pianos. When they are standing they’re Upright, when horizontal, they’re Grand.” – Benny Hill
@Grey: Start Dempster tomorrow at St. Louis?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
@Grey: What are your current thoughts on this crazy Votto business?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
@p0rk burn: well i could throw in gonzo…i could also throw in hardy w/ victorino & cano FOR rollins…but i am less excited with rollins and hardy is at least coming around some….i have to get a trade tonight or just dump gonzo TONIGHT or i won’t be able to activate ervin for 2 morrow
May 19th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
@Joel: Didn’t you hear? Jay Bruce applied for a registered trademark on tonight’s line:
1/4, 1 run, 1 HR, 1 RBI™
And tomorrow I expect to see news of a lawsuit against Mark Reynolds for infringement.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Konerko > Cameron for my UTIL spot?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
@Paulie Allnuts: Haha, nice quote!
I would start Dempster btw, despite the win tonight the Cardinals are struggling on offense. Badly.
@Everybody
Pay no attention to the masterful start by Piniero, he’ll kill your ratios in the next one to two outings.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
@BigFatHippo: How’s that K-Wood salad tasting right now?
May 19th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
@Prince: Absolutely.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Should I give up Vernon Wells, Brett Cecil, Elvis Andrus for Ichiro in a keeper league where I’m a 2 in average, but also poor in hr and rbi.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
@Steve: Oh no, he didn’t, did he? I couldn’t bring myself to watch.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
@bpasinko: No.
May 19th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
@BigFatHippo: Made a proper job of it, I’m afraid.
@James: Yeah, he’s prone to giant slumps, but his upside is enticing.
@mgeoffriau: Ha!
May 19th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
@Steve: Oh yes he did, ruined my whole fricken day, and I was having a good day too.
Where’d I put my 12 gauge? Oh yeah, it’s over there, with the razor blades, arsenic and ticks.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
@Grey: AL KOHOLIC is on his way to California tomorrow.
Be wary of earthquakes, landslides, forest fires and golf courses. Al brings it wherever he goes. Where Al goes, nothing grows!
@BigFatHippo: That’s hilarious. We actually had an earthquake here today. Decent size tremor. I grabbed my Benihana Buddhas and stood in the doorway.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
@Grey: Pointless Trivia Tid-Bit of the Day: New Zealand is known (not widely or commonly) as the Shaky Isles because the country is located on the margin of a couple of tectonic plates.
Elsewhere, is Bilingsley sleeping with his team-mates wives or something? Gets on base himself, then they’re loaded with nobody out.
Nada.
And Shoppach reacted predictably to my dropping him in the RCL…
May 19th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
@Grey: Hehe, told you he was on his way.
The Elias Weather Bureau predicts high tides and the po-lice will beat up some guy named Rodney Bling!
@Shaky Isles!: Ah… I knew there was a reason Shoppach did something.
@BigFatHippo: Ha!
May 19th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Outfielders ranked please
Beltran, Carlos Lee, Quentin, Hamilton, BJ Upton? is that right?
May 19th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Thinking of pickup up a FA on the DL and see what happens down the line. Options: Delgado, Doumit, Ankiel. Thoughts? Maybe this is just a stupid idea .. I don’t know if people pick up and stash DL players, though someone just grabbed Aramis so I guess at least one person does.
May 19th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Bj Upton/Wandy for Hamilton/Lidge? Which side and how close?
Quentin/Wandy
May 19th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
@BigFatHippo: Mind the gap…
May 19th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
@Steve: Yeah I dropped Shoppach a couple of days ago as well (for Robinson frickin’ Diaz of all people), and now he’s hitting a HR.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Josh Willingham is heating up, now that he’s getting regular at-bats (at Kearns’ expense). I dropped Balentien for him a couple of days ago, and he had a good game for me yesterday. Not so good today, but then Balentien didn’t play either.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
@Prince: Of course they do. Depends on how many DL slots you have, but they are there, why not use them. Aramis would’ve been a no brainer. Not sure what you’re needs are but Ankiel will be back tomorrow, Doumit in a little over a month, and Delgado is out two and half months.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
@Grey: Have you got Gaudin going tomorrow?
@I’m Keith Hernandez: That looks right.
@Prince: Ankiel
@I’m Keith Hernandez: Wandy side for both, it’s close on each.
@DrEasy: I’d take Willingham over him, but that’s not saying much.
@Steve: Yup
May 19th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
@naughtandcross: Thanks, as a newb I appreciate the fantasy bb education. Yeah, I’d planned to grab Aramis but I deliberated too long. Doumit could potentially replace Napoli, but it might be more for trade bait or UTIL. Delgado, UTIL as well, or else CI (over Reynolds. I’ve read about this injury possibly affecting Doumit’s wrist permanently, but no way to really tell until that time arrives. I guess I’ll go with Doumit since he’s back soonest, unless anyone posts their objections.
May 19th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
I had such a bad night. Freakin Ray shouldn’t be on my team. Plus F-Her and Cueto didn’t help me out much. My lone bright spot: Rasmus is starting to look like a big leaguer.
Grey, should I drop Coghlan for Parra? What’s the diff with those two beside Coghlan’s 2B eligibility? And will Parra play?
@Tom: They’re very similar, decent speed, some light power. Parra will play if he hits.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
@Grey: My bad for not paying attention, but does R-Spill mostly sit against righties, or is there another reason?
@Steve: He does on most nights.
May 19th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
@Grey: How about that Dodger bullpen? Won’t hear a word said against them [insert emoticon as appropriate].
May 19th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
@Grey: Odds Oswalt ends up with about the same numbers as last year?
May 19th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Bengie + Adam Jones for McCann. Who ya got?
@Drev: 85%
@Steve: Molina/Jones, but it’s close.
