It has not been a good year for the Joneses. Jacques Jones is headed for retirement, Marion Jones went to jail and Ed “Too Tall” Jones banged his head on a doorway. And none of them will even acknowledge their brother from a white mother, Todd Jones, who was offcially replaced as closer on Sunday. I know what you’re saying, “But Todd Jones had just under a 3 K/9 ratio! Life’s unfair!” Yup, it sure is for everyone but Fernando Rodney, who Leyland announced would take over the Tiger’s closer job. (Leyland also announced he’s returning to filtered cigarettes now that Jones is gone.) Do I think it will last with Rodney? Sure, unless the Tigers trade for Fuentes or Street. Fuentes has closing experience, but Rodney can be just as dominant. Street has experience, and is just as injury prone as Rodney. So six of one, half dozen of another. Also, Zumaya is not without his issues as he had right triceps tightness and had to leave Sunday’s game. As for Todd Jones, drop him. He was useless when he had the job. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

John Grabow – Gave up 2 home runs yesterday. I still think he’s first in line for saves, but he could be traded too (or just not covert any saves or just not get any saves to convert). You might need to look at Tyler Yates and Denny Bautista, as well. Honestly, I grabbed Grabow and that’s as deep as I’m going for Pirates saves. These other schmohawks are not being picked up by me, except in the deepest of leagues where I really need saves.

Brian McCann – Out with a mild concussion from The Flying Hawaiian going all Tonga Kid on McCann and giving him a flying headbutt.

Shane Victorino – HR yesterday. Now has 8 HRs (Alexis Rios has 8 HRs, as well).

Billy Butler – Doesn’t he sound like a character from Clue? It was Billy Butler with the candlestick in the library. Anyway, since the All-Star break, Butler has 4 HRs, 14 RBIs and 2 moobs.

Jack Cust – HR yesterday. Will now hit three HRs this week, walk seven times and strikeout ten times. Hot week ahead!

Eric Chavez – He says he could be done as a third basemen. He could’ve said this in 2006.

Manny Ramirez – Says he’ll accept a trade out of Boston. They should trade him to the Nationals and then see how quickly he accepts. Honestly, I couldn’t believe the amount of people falling for Manny’s shizz back in March when everyone was saying Manny’s going to have a career year because of a contract. In December of 2007, I said Manny’s done trying. He’s been done. It’s fine. I just wish people would stop falling for the same nonsense.  Now I know it’s against a high-ranking baseball commandment to say anything against Gammons, but he was even reporting about Manny’s off-season conditioning. Listen, Manny’s off-season conditioning involves Xbox, Chuck E. Cheese and Mama’s Family DVDs.

Nomar Garciaparra – Left the game with knee irritation. After the game, Nomar said he might have injured his knee the previous night when he forgot the safety word with Mia.

Mike Jacobs/Derrek Lee – 22 HRs/60 RBIs and 17 HRs/63 RBIs, respectively. Granted, Lee (Buffalo) is not the negative on average like Jacobs, but Lee is only batting .296. Cust kayin’.

Scott Hairston – 17th HR yesterday. Later this week his bro, Jerry, returns. The brother battle between the Hairstons and the Uptons is almost as lopsided as The Von Erichs and The Bushwackers.

Ubaldo Jimenez – Besides having one of the best first names in baseball, he also put together a solid July. Last year, he had a solid July then got progressively worse as the year went on. Caveat emptor, for those in Latin America.

Johan Santana – 7th career complete game. CC Sabathia almost had 7 complete games in July.

Hank Blalock – 2-for-3 and he’s going back to Texas. If he can stay healthy (Yes, that’s a big if. BTW, how come people don’t say it’s a small if something is very probable? Like, “I guess we’ll get donuts if Dunkin’ Donuts, a store that never closes, is open. Yes, that’s a small if.”), Blalock could be in for a big week.

Jeff Samardzija – Got the save yesterday after Marmol threw 1 2/3 innings on Saturday. I suppose he could get more saves if Wood continues to have blister problems, but I think Marmol will out-save him 4 to 1 and if Wood’s out-saving Marmol… Well, you get my drift.

Clayton Kershaw – Got his first major league win. The only thing is, I would start just about anyone at Dodgers Stadium against the Nats.

Marcus Thames – Got one hit yesterday. Guess what it was? Okay, so you platoon Thames and Joyce just like Leyland is doing. They’ll probably hit 45 HRs combined. What, you don’t want 45 HRs?

Javier Vazquez – Was roughed up again on Sunday. It’s of little consolation to his owners (which I’m not, suckas!), but Vazquez’s K rate is fine and his BABIP is at .335, which means he’s been unlucky — sorta like his owners, which I’m not, suckas!

Kyle Lohse – Drop the H.

Brad Ziegler – Set major league rookie record with 27 scoreless innings to start a career. Interesting factoid, he hasn’t given up a home run since he switched to pitching sidearm, 128 1/3 innings ago. Uninteresting factoid, his Mom’s name is Beth.

    @Grey: needless to say, when I finally played Chris Davis yesterday, he goes 0fer. I then look at my team log, Chris Davis registers a hot 4 for 26 for me, which means I missed all but 1 of his 10 homers. sigh……. Do I start him tonight against Felix?

    @jph: Iannetta, and it’s not even close.

    I have no opinion on Andres Galarraga, as I assumed he retired years ago.

    @knighttown: Yeah, but I doubt he’d do that. If he’s offered it, TAKE IT NOW.

    @p0rk burn: Good luck on the bar!

  7. knighttown says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins:
    Oh, it’s already been offered but my OF will now be Ibanez, Dunn, Tatis, Swisher and, we’ll that’s it, I’ll need to pick up Mike Cameron for the 8th time.

    I just traded BJ Upton for Peavy. What do you think?

  9. jph says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: I have no opinion on the Big Cat either–think he succumbed to cancer but might be mistaken–I was asking about Det SP Armando Galarraga.

    Does The Big Cat hold the record for being the most beaned batter?

    Considering moving OF depth to upgrade at pitcher.

    I trade Lincecum/McLouth/Victorino

    for

    Hamels/Rios

    I know it’s giving up a lot in the OF for what could be a small upgrade at pitcher in the 2nd half but my LF is Holliday and RF is Markakis, plus I have Pence as well so I could shuffle Pence and Rios if need be.

    Is Hamels worth this move? I’m a little worried about Lincecum’s arm in the 2nd half and how SF uses him.

  13. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

    @BVV: I’m probably taking the chance and benching Chris Davis for Giambi tonight. Davis is going against King Felix while Giambi is facing Guthrie whom he’s had success against in the past.

  14. Zebo says:

    @everyone: trade Thome for Wandy?

  15. Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

    @jph: I was just kidding about the Big Cat. Sadly, Armando (? too lazy to scroll up and check) exists at the periphery of my consciousness, along with Jorge Campillo, Bergmann and every other pitcher who does just well enough for me to pick him up for his one lambasting of the season, then drop him.

    Feh.

    @Zebo: Hmmmmmmmmmm — no. Unless you’re getting Thome.

    @Frank Rizzo: Godspeed then, man. Just be warned this was my exact rationale when I started EE over Davis when EE faced Jorge De La Rosa and Davis faced Dooksher in Oakland and of course went DONKA-DONK-DONK-DONK.

    @Frank Rizzo: Yes, I would be worried about Lincey, specifically about him getting shut down/limited in the final months when SF has nothing left to play for (I know, that more or less happened in April).

    If Lincey is in the Cy Young hunt they might let him fly, though it would be a mistake. But Hamels comes with all the same red flags, so this upgrade is not worth it. I’d try to trade Lincey for Halladay instead — or some similar red-blooded stud who should get the ball every fifth between here and October.

    @DrBaseball: Good trade for you. Peavy is probably the best pitcher in baseball right now, or at least the one I’d most want over the last two months. Plus, I am starting to cool on my hopes that Upton will have one great month. I’d settle for three good weeks at this point.

  16. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Sav: True. Vicki Lawrence could churn out the funny.

    @Zebo: The next seven days he’s at home. You have to start him. Reevaluate next Sunday.

    @jph: I’d bench Nolasco tonight. I don’t like Galarraga though.

    I don’t think McCann will go south. He’ll just need a few days. I’d go Iannetta for the time being.

    @knighttown: Yeah, definitely.

    @p0rk burn: Thanks, P0rk. I’ll take a look at it in two seconds.

    @DrBaseball: I think that’s solid trade for you.

    @Dioner Navarro: @Scott Baker: I’d want Butler.

    re: Liriano — He should’ve been called up already. I’d say the latest next week. If the Twins use him in the bullpen will be one of the worst management moves of the year. (But not calling hm up, is up there already, so I guess it’s possible. Just highly unlikely.)

    BTW, you can change your alias every time, but you have to keep getting approved before the comment goes through. If you keep a name, it’ll start auto-approving.

    @Frank Rizzo: Hamels has risk because of innings, as well. I’m not making that trade. I would see if I could move Lincecum though.

    @Zebo: Sure, I’d take Wandy there.

  18. Grey

    I have Nolasco and Lilly going tonight… I think im gonna bench them both. Lilly against MIL with C.C. pitching doesnt sound to good for Lilly. Nolasco hasnt pitched as well against better teams and the Mets are hot unfortunately.

  20. royce! says:

    Bedard was recently dropped in my league. My only potential spot for him would involve dropping Harang (who is currently occupying my DL spot). Despite Bedard’s fragility, I still think this is an upgrade. Any dissenters?

    All of this of course assumes that no one picks him up off waivers, since I’m saving my #3 spot for someone more deserving (and not injured).

  21. Grey

    Grey says:

    @wakeNbake: So which side of that trade were you on? Or neither?

  22. BSA says:

    Made some adjustments this week in my H2H league by picking up both EE and Davis.
    Due to games this week I’ll be rolling them both out there so I don’t get bonked like the baron did this week. An 0fer week could still bonk me though.
    I have offered Lincee and Paps for Billingsley and Ankiel as well as offering another team Grandy and Markakis for Sizemore. Lets see what happens. I’ll probably have to play with the outfield trade a bit since the other team is cruising right now and I am still doing fine but stammering.

  23. knighttown says:
    (link)

    Does Alex Gordon have any playability. I just got him as a throw in in the Utley deal above and he’s hit .188 in the past 30 days. Just a drop?

  24. wakeNbake says:
    (link)

    @Grey: I thought the team trading Maggs and Beckett was getting shafted especially since he is in last place and was trading Maggs and Beckett to the 3rd place team. That trade was just vetoed for the 2nd time in my league, one trade went through the second time it was proposed so now every1 in the league tries it twice if their trade gets vetoed, annoying.

  25. BSA says:
    (link)

    Hey Grey, you would appreciate this. I have this one team that had forebode my demise and we are tied now for first and have each won against each other with one left to play. Nice end of season grudge match.
    Anyways, as I have made moves I am noticing he and this one other team pick up my drops. I had traded Mauer, Morneau, and Longo for Pudge, Fielder, and Wright.
    I then dropped Pudge after he brought back the heartburn from last year when I owned him and picked up Iannetta.
    Guess who picked up Pudge and dropped Navarro?
    As Hippo said yesterday, Razzball has made it a much more interesting season.

  26. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @Grey
    Lohse definitely dropped the H last night, why’d I start him against Johan in the RCL, why didn’t you stop me Grey, why?

    Shields a good start tonight? His road #s are bad but #s against Toronto are excellent.

  27. It’s about time Todd Jones was demoted from the closer role. Rodney’s a better option, but in time the role will be Zumaya’s.

  28. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

    @BVV and Grey: Thanks for the input on Lincecum. I thought Hamels was pretty solid down the stretch last year…..no?

    Is Hamels for Lincecum an upgrade at all, or am I gambling? I’m trying to upgrade to a solid 2nd half team and win this thing.

    I have a small offer right now of Lincecum/Thome for Hamels and he may be interested based on how hot Lincecum is at the moment. Thome would be no loss to me whatsoever.

  29. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    @BSA

    Hairston is a dealbreaker, I’m counting on him in my OF. You want Kaz Mat?

  30. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @BSA: Grandy and Markakis for Sizemore is a lot for Sizemore.

    @knighttown: No, unfortunately, he’s been awful. If there’s other options on waivers, I’d look at them.

    @wakeNbake: That is annoying.

    @BSA: Ha, that’s awesome.

    @BigFatHippo: I’d start Shields.

    @Phillies: Yeah, Zumaya should get in there soon, but then again Jones was the closer for almost three years.

    @Frank Rizzo: Nah, Hamels hit the DL last year because of being overworked. Though, he came back to be okay.

  31. ABell says:
    (link)

    Garza just got dropped in my league, is he worth dropping guthrie or maybe parra for?
    Also what do you think of Bedard in terms of next season? I might could get him for in a package for a Haren led package. not sure what the deal would look like exactly yet but just looking for opinions. Thanks fellas

  32. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

    @Grey: So do you believe Lincy for Cole is worth it or is it too even to bother with? Your top 100 in the 2nd half would lead me to believe it’s worth it. Me sending Thome in the deal to him doesn’t hurt my team at all. Does Cole help enough to do it?

  33. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @ABell: I just dropped Garza myself in one league. I wouldn’t want him over those two right now.

    As of right now, I like Bedard a lot for next season. He’ll definitely be on a list some time in December or January of guys to look at.

    @Frank Rizzo: As I said in the opening of that top 100, things change fast. Hamels is very solid, but there’s reason to be concerned after his last time out. I do not make the trade Cole for Lince right now, too much risk. Though I would try and move Lincecum, as well.

  34. jph says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Do you like Wandy more than Garza/Nolasco?

    Does Washburn deserve another look if the Yankees acquire him?

    Do you see Scherzer getting called up again and if so as an addition to the rotation or pen?

    Boston totally got shafted last night

  35. JR says:
    (link)

    @jph

    My approach to Scherzer (who’s sitting on the waiver wires in my league) is this: I want him if he’s starting; I don’t want him in middle relief. I’m gonna start watching his AAA numbers and see if they start stretching him out (so far, 2 innings pitched in two outings spaced four days apart). If they do, I’m picking him up…

  36. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @jph: I do like Wandy more, if only slightly.

    Washburn would be worth a look in deep leagues if the Yanks get him.

    There’s got to be someone else to look at besides Scherzer.

  37. JR says:

    @Grey

    Do you like Wandy better than Kuroda?

  38. Grey

  39. wakeNbake says:

    How bullish are you on Gio Gonzalez Grey? Im holding on to him hoping for a callup but he is kinda clogging up my roster a little. Im looking to spot start some pitchers this coming week because Im benching alot of my regular SP such as Lilly, Nolasco and Clay Buchholz and I cant spot start because Gio is the only person I can drop. Other drop candidates are Grabow or Kobayashi( im scrounging for saves tho) Clay Buchholz (rather not), Grant Balfour or Taylor Buchholz( I really need their stellar ratios in my lineup tho since my SP isnt that good). Would you drop Gio or another player I listed to spot start some guys for the coming week. Also Im almost positive if I drop Gio he will be claimed off of waivers because I spoke to 2 managers in my league who were pissed I picked him up b4 they did.

  40. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @wakeNbake: I’ve dropped Gio in every league I’m in that I had him. The only league I would hold him right now is an AL-Only league or a keeper league.

    Start spot starting.

  41. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

    Oh boy, the other guy just got back to me and said he didn’t even want Thome in the deal but was interested in a 1 for 1, me giving Lincecum, him giving Hamels. This is not a keeper league. Why’s he so eager to do this? You really wouldn’t make this deal, huh Grey?

  42. Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

    @Frank Rizzo: It’s basically a wash. If you are dying to do it, it’s not like it’s totally lopsided or anything. I’d rather have Hamels going forward than Lincecum. But Hamels is not without his risks too.

  43. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Frank Rizzo: I wouldn’t do this deal. I’d try and trade Lincecum for a safer starter. There’s a reason why the other guy is pushing for this.

  54. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @agarthered: Hold on Morrow for a week or until the Mariners make a decision. Maholm’s put together some decent starts, he’s worth a slot for match-ups.

    @Zebo: LaRoche

    re: Hudson — He’s supposed to pitch tomorrow. Probably the Braves just moving people around because of McCann getting concussed and them needing an extra catcher.

  55. agarthered says:
    (link)

    Malholm or kershaw or Jiminez?

  56. Zebo says:
    (link)

    @Grey: safe to start Hudson against enigmatic Cardinals? Braden Looper always seems to win games he not supposed to win, kinda like Kyle Lose.

  57. Mike says:
    (link)

    @Zebo:from rotoworld…… Braves placed RHP Tim Hudson on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow tightness.

    All indications were that Hudson was going to start Tuesday, and maybe he would have if the Braves were still in the race. Putting him on the disabled list might be an admssion by the team that the Braves are out of it.

    just read this from rotoworld Grey. Does this mean that Izzy is closing?

    Jason Isringhausen will resume getting save chances over Ryan Franklin, Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan said Monday.

    So much for that vote of confidence to Franklin. It’s probably the right move for St. Louis. Franklin was terrific in the eighth inning for more than a full season and might be more comfortable there. The Cards will still be shaky in the ninth, but maybe now they’ll have a few more leads get that

    @Grey: Yay?

    Oh well, a saves a save, but Izzy makes my worry. Did I grab him?

    In my keeper league i’m behind in wins and quality starts but am close enough where I could make up a lot of ground if I get some good pitching. The guy in last is really interested in trading for Felix so he can keep him. He is willing to give up Beckett and Pena for Felix. Should I do the deal or is Felix to Beckett a wash?

  71. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @cruisinkc: How close are you to winning? Could Pena and Beckett make all the difference? I’m leaning towards advising to do it, but I’d like to know a bit more.

  72. cruisinkc says:
    (link)

    @Grey: I’m currently 4th in the league with 79 points. The leader has 100 points so he may be hard to catch, but i’m only 1 point behind 3rd and 6 points behind the guy in 2nd. I figure I could gain about 8 points in wins and quality starts alone if I get decent pitching. I just know wins are hard to predict but I figure beckett has a better chance to get more wins then felix just based on the teams they pitch for. I really don’t have a need for Pena at this time but he would be nice to have in case of injury. What do you think?

    @Grey: 2nd place will get me $150 so not too shabby. Our league only keeps 6 guys. My options for keepers are Tex, Rollins, Braun, BJ Upton, Markakis, Atkins for offense. My other pitchers I have now are Shields, Verlander, Billingsley to go along with Felix.

    @cruisinkc: And 4th I’m assuming is out of the money. Your keepers are very solid, do the trade.

    Who wants my pitching staff? Hudson, Bedard, and Lincee….
    I now need to find a starter, or two, and drop a big name, or two, who won’t be taking me through the playoffs in a H2H league.
    Ideas? Names to rank and research! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here is the CBS info on Hudson:
    Braves SP Tim Hudson has ligament damage in his pitching elbow and went on the 15-day DL on Monday. General manager Frank Wren said the club is trying to get Hudson an appointment with orthopedist James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., this week, fearing a torn ligament might require season-ending Tommy John surgery. “It’s not good,” the GM said. “It’s more than inflammation. Some of the damage is old, some of it new.”

    @Grey: Yeah first 3 spots get the money so I’m borderline right now. Hopefully this puts me over the top. Thanks for the advice.

    @BSA: Ugh, that’s awful news. I have Hudson on every team imaginable.

    After my RCL moves I am ready to just say F-it and adjust my pitching strategy which has been to stick with a consistent staff and fill the seven spots each week with 4 starters and 3 closers. I am ready to dump Bedard and Hudson leaving two open positions to fill with two start pitchers that I pick and dump each week.

    @BSA: If it helps make it easier for you, I just dumped Hudson in my ten team league.

    @BSA: This week or next week? Like to see what Young is going to do tomorrow before I recommend him. I’d look at Ubaldo, Randy and Maholm, in that order.

    Next week, thanks. I’m interested in Young’s night as well. Hope he doesn’t pull a Carmona. CBuchholz is also in there.
