Fantasy Baseball, Selling High
Always one to double check his Razzbill of sale to make sure he got everything he paid for, Razzball commenter Ron Mexico’s Papi saw my post yesterday about holding tight in your fantasy baseball leagues and flipped the script to ask me about selling high. Surely, if some guys should be held because they’re bound to revert to their old, productive selves then there must be guys who need to be sold off because there’s no way they can retain their torrid start. Yes, definitely. This is why I do a Fantasy Baseball Buy/Sell every Friday, not a Buy/Buy. (Mr. Mexico also offered a few names, some of which I’m going to go over specifically in Friday’s Buy/Sell.) But first I wanted to talk about the concept of selling someone high, in general.
Baseball, fantasy and otherwise, is a great game because players do what they’re supposed to do for the most part over the long season, while having huge fluctuations from game to game. If Nadir Bupkus is supposed to be terrible for the season, chances are he will be terrible. Nadir may have a good game or two. Maybe even a month. But come October, he’s still Nadir Bupkus. Same with talented players. If Apex Pinnacle has shown the ability to hit well in the majors, he should be able to continue — outside of injuries/age. All the time players come out of nowhere and perform above their heads for a small sample size. But as Grey’s past girlfriends have said, “Beware the small sample size.” You need to know a player’s true worth.
Over a season, is Bonifacio someone that could hit .320 and steal 60 bases? More than likely, no. In fact, it’s a pipe dream. He does have speed, but he can’t hit. He’s shown he swings and misses and does not walk a lot. So his value is speed. There’s a place for that (just not at 3rd). Now if Bonifacio lucks into a decent average, because average does have some to do luck, then yay! Good for you. Go buy your sister a nose job. But you don’t pay hoping to luck into something. So how do you know a player’s true worth? Well, you might not. But that’s why there’s comments…

@The Giant Brain: I was considering a Hudson offer straight up for Phillips to his owner.
@wily mo: I was going to offer another carrot to get Rollins with Drew. Maybe Drew/Lind for Rollins. Problem is, I traded for Rollins last year and was pretty underwhelmed by him. He may be totally overrated at this point.

Looking for a sample of opinion here:
Is Wright for Braun an apples to apples trade?

Knee jerk reaction? A leaguemate dropped Hawkins for Rafael Soriano. Its tempting to grab Hawkins because saves are saves, but I’m already sitting on Nathan, Qualls, Corpas, and now Downs who is probably in line to pick up some saves.
My first thought regarding this embarrassment of riches is to pick up Hawkins and deal Nathan to someone that will over value him. Discuss.

Big time rooting for E.Jack tonight…two fold… 1) I am starting him 2) I am trying to Sell him and another good start might be enough to convince another owner he is legit.
The beauty of the Buy/Sell is one owners Buy Low is another owners Sell High. I sold Verlander after his 2nd start. I think he’s still a Sell while stuff is still being written like “On a positive note, he has 25 strikeouts to nine walks in 25 innings, so there’s some hope for a turnaround.”

April 23rd, 2009 at 4:38 pm
@p0rk burn: @Paulie Allnuts: True he did but it’s already dated. Around 5 DLs… Downs is now moved to Closer, etc. Holds are tough to predict… my thinking is you look for the MRs on better teams that get called on alot. Long relievers are no good for holds. You want the high frequency guys, not just the Setup guy. The ratio of MR to Closer to SP depends on how many slots you have. With alot of bench spots you can keep your SP on the bench, only slotting them active when they start, 3 or 4 closers should make you competitive in saves, then plug in as many MR as you can…. hopefully with decent ERA/WHIP…getting Holds and the occasional W. It would probably make sense to try to target the MR/Setup guy for your Closer if it is a good team. Nothing like double dipping with a hold and a save and you have the insurance in case the Closer gets hurt.
[Reply]
April 23rd, 2009 at 4:41 pm
@Grey: Complicating matters is that its a holds league so Downs is worth a lot even if he isnt closing. With my pantry full of closers he’s probably worth more to me as a holds-man. The problem with playing against ignorant managers is they won’t deal for the quality players I’m trying to give them so I don’t see a Downs move any time soon.

Question: It’s the first game after a trade you just made, and this is more applicable to pitchers… Is it more satisfying if the guy you traded for has a great game, or if the guy you traded away does his best Everybody Wang Chump Tonight?
[Reply]
April 23rd, 2009 at 4:52 pm
@NoonTime: My usual approach from about midway through the season on is to browse the guys with the most holds and look for the low ERA/WHIP/K guys. This early in the season its hard to tell unless its a money MR. The money men of the past were Bell, Dotel, Shields, Downs. I still believe in Dotel and even drafted Downs with one of my last picks for the same reason. Compounding matters this early in the season is that the MR spots are generally where pitchers cut their teeth. Its hard to tell an actual gem from pyrite without a history to compare against two weeks.
By the way, thanks who ever dropped Dotel in the RCL: The OG generation.
[Reply]
April 23rd, 2009 at 4:53 pm

@NoonTime- ‘The “J” is Martin’s way of paying tribute to his mother, as it represents her maiden name — Jeanson. Martin’s legal name is Russell Nathan Jeanson Coltrane Martin.
“It’s kind of cool to give her that. She deserves the recognition,” Martin said of his mother. “She’s a huge part of my life, and it’s time for me to do it.”‘

@Grey: Didn’t see it.. Hopefully Quentin is just a baby and it’s nothing serious.
But if he broke anything, atleast it’s April… And atleast I have Ibanez on the bench… And atleast I traded Quentin for Markakis in my other keeper league.
It’s all my fault.. For getting joy out of BJ Ryan’s downfall.. Bad karma never wastes time in biting me in the ass.

On the bright side Cantu took a pitch to the back of the hand a few weeks ago and only missed a week. Those x-rays could mean at least 6 additional weeks without CQ. No, not this @CQ.

I was thinking of dealing Bedard, D.Lee, F.Lopez and R.Soriano for C.Pena, Mauer, Ethier and Dotel. Think that will fly? If it were to get rejected, would you still do that deal if I changed R.Soriano to H.Bell?
I could also add in my M.Ordonez for his Liriano.
Ps:Rios has mojo back.
[Reply]
April 23rd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
@Schatzi: I wouldn’t but thats partly because I’m convinced Bedard is going to kill this year. And Pena and I sort of have beef. He didn’t take too kindly to some things I said to him at a Marlins game a year or two ago. I think adding Maggs for Liriano tips things even more towards overpaying, but if you need to fill needs then do what you need to do.

I think I might take my chances, what with this being a 20 team league. The thrill of victory is that much sweeter when you risk it all. And by risk it all I mean start a Nationals pitcher.

@Grey: Should I be worried about AB’s for Gardner with the 2 HR game Melky pulled out of his ass the other night?
Also, I know Downs has been incredible lately, and we don’t know how long Ryan will be out, so would you take a flier on Jason Frasor if Downs is already picked up in a 15 team deep league?

@Harley: Gardner’s in trouble. Frasor’s worth grabbing.
@Endless Summer: Harden… Oh, wait.
@Tom: Looks good, throw in Andy, as Hippo said.

@Joe S.: No, not unreasonable.
@Schatzi: I’d want the Pena side.

In the early stages of this season, Davis has refined his approach off the plate, which is a good sign. The problem seems to be he can’t make contact in the zone, which probably won’t continue. In addition, he is hitting fly balls at a higher rate this season. Could Davis be trying to live up to the lofty HR projections set by many pundits? As a result, since he is swinging for the fences, he is missing strikes he usually hit for line drives in the past? If so, I assume he will make adjustments and be better going forward.
What do you guys think?
[Reply]
April 23rd, 2009 at 9:53 pm
@James: I think he’s a .260 hitter. He swings for the fences. Sometimes he misses. Sometimes they go out. See Uggla, Dan.
[Reply]
@James: Davis had K rates in the minors that equaled or surpassed Dunn. He Ks a lot. He also hits a lot of line drives and HRs. He’ll be fine. Long season. All that jazz.

@Grey: do you put much credence in BABIP watching for normalization, perhaps even for sell/buy opportunities?
For example Danks and Edwin Jackson, while doing well, have microscopic BABIPs in the .160 range, totally unsustainable.
While Verlander, Nolasco and Razzball punching bag Cliff Lee, all currently in crappy territory, have sky high BABIPs in the .390+ range. (I believe normal territory is in the .300 range?)
Have you (or anyone) found this to be a useful tool at all?
