Fantasy Baseball, Fun With Numbers IV
Now it’s time for everyone’s favorite game, Fantasy Baseball, Fun With Numbers. Ding, ding, ding… Bassoon… Triangle! Triangle! Triangle! Cow bell! More cow bell! One last ding. In today’s installment of Fantasy Baseball, Fun With Numbers, we’re going to look at some players for the last month and try to figure out if maybe the numbers tell a different story than their names tell. At this point in the season, it’s very important to abandon names and just try and plug in the best stats. Anyway, here’s the latest in Fantasy Baseball, Fun With Numbers:
ALL STATS ARE FOR THE LAST 30 DAYS.
1st Basemen:
Player A – 21/5/18/.367/2
Player B – 16/5/17/.284
Player C – 20/9/19/.340
Player A is Aubrey Huff, B is Adrian Gonzalez and C is Nick Swisher. Bonus 1st baseman of the last 30 days — 17/6/23/.402. Otherwise known as Buster Posey.
2nd Basemen:
Player A – 16/4/13/.226/3
Player B – 16/5/16/.269
Player C – 17/4/15/.323/3
Player A is Brandon Phillips, B is Robinson Cano, C is Kelly Johnson. Excitement with owning Johnson may have waned after April, but he’s still maintained value.
Shortstops:
Player A – 18/5/12/.326/4
Player B – 10/0/10/.198/7
Player C – 8/0/2/.208/5
Player A is Alexei Ramirez, B is Jimmy Rollins and C is Elvis Andrus. Actually, you name the shortstop and they’re doing better than J-Roll and Andrus. Too bad Elvis didn’t leave the building and take Rollins with him.
3rd Basemen:
Player A – 10/3/13/.264/2
Player B – 19/3/13/.287/3
Player C – 14/7/18/.319/1
Player A is David Wright, B is Evan Longoria and C is Adrian Beltre. Good to see someone’s put up stats to replicate what Jimmy Rollins’ last month should’ve been. Too bad it’s Longoria and Wright.
Outfielders:
Player A – 20/7/19/.310/4
Player B – 16/5/11/.354/9
Player C – 11/4/11/.277/1
Player A is Andres Torres, B is Angel Pagan and C is Torii Hunter. Two guys that are actually putting up power and speed numbers while one guy’s reputation says he should be.
Bonus!
Player A – 18/6/15/.283/2
Player B – 20/8/21/.279/2
Player A is Albert Pujols, Player B is Rickie Weeks. Zoinks!

2. Drop E. Aybar for Infante for my MI while he’s in for Prado?

Speaking of fun numbers, Juan Pierre just hit his 1st HR since September 15, 2008. Man, the Tigers suck.

Grey, what’s your best guess of where you will rank Latos next year? I won’t hold you to it, of course, but I’d be interested to hear a couple of other SPs that you think he should be drafted around…

Does Andrus’ slow start to the second half change your opinion of him compared to Reyes and Rollins next year or do you still think he is better than both going forward?
[Reply]
@Bring Back Pluto: Bottom of the top 20. Around Carpenter, Haren, etc.
[Reply]
@Phillip: He’ll be fine going forward. Bad 2nd half may just have him sink in the rankings and be a nice value pick next year.

d) Juan Pierre

@DrEasy: @Grey: Naturally, my opponents this week in two h2h leagues have Pierre. His 2nd HR in 4 years, and I’ve got to eat it. Twice.
The same thing happened to me earlier this year with Maicer Izturis when he hit 2/3 of this season’s HR on 5/31-6/1. Had to eat that crap in multiple h2h leagues. Why me, papa smurf?
I hate h2h; I love h2h.

You’re gonna be forced to rank Rios in the top 30 next year, Grey.

The Angels called up Peter Bourjos, who is batting .314 with 13 HR and 27 SB. Any chance he sees enough playing time to be rosterable?
Also, Chris Carter (OAK) has started in LF for 5 of the last 6 games in AAA. Think OAK can make room for him?
[Reply]
August 3rd, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Now that Jordan Zimmermann is likely not seeing the bigs until 2011 (they want him to make at least 4 more starts at AAA and have capped his innings at 5 ip per start for the rest of 2010), i am going to drop him for another high potential stash.
Here are my options:
Carlos Zambrano – Threw 54 pitches in his last outing with good velocity albeit mixed results. Silva to the DL, and Lilly to the Dodgers might leave a rotation spot for him. What do you think?
Derek Holland – Threw well in rehab starts, but they now want him to make at least 1-2 more starts at AAA before calling him up. His slider which was previously at 87 mph is now in the 80-84 range and they want him to work more on his change. I assume they will want him to start when the time comes.
Who do you like better?

Also, I just picked up Yunesky Maya for my minor league roster. Word on the street is that he will be in the Nats rotation by mid-late August. These international pitchers are always hard to figure out at first, and he will be up come crunch time. What do you think he can contribute the rest of the way?

@Grey: cool, thanks! Now back to my original question from yesterday re: trying to acquire Doc in my 8 Team Keeper that I’m trying to win this year to bank some coin.
My roster:
C – Suzuki
1B – Fielder
2B – Weeks
3B – Longoria
SS – Andrus
OF – CarGo
OF – Holliday
OF – Kemp
UTIL – Pence
UTIL – Wright
BN – Krispie
DL – Utley
SP – JJ
SP – Verlander
SP – Kershaw
SP – Floyd
SP – Lewis
SP – Hamels
SP – Scherzer
RP – Feliz
RP – Soria
RP – K- Rod
RP – Capps
RP – Aardsma
Yesterday, you said try CarGo/Castro for Doc/Furcal. I sent that, and he said it was OK, but not enough (CarGo is my highest rated bat, according to Yahoo). So I cancelled and dropped Castro for Andrus. Do you still think I should try to move anyone for Doc, or just try to ride out this All-Star team? Thanks man, I really appreciate all your help.

@Grey: Just got a counter offer accepted of Butler for Nolasco in 15 team roto with OBP instead of AVG. I sent that last night though, now I lose Youk to go along with Smooth. Can I afford to trade Butler?
Without Butler and Youk, my corner situation: Tex, Huff, C. Johnson, Beckham & Morrison.
I’m at 9.5 points out of 15 in OBP and 4 & 3.5 in ERA and WHIP respectively.

Player B: 6 Runs, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 5 SB, .278 AVG and .775 OPS.

Player A is CarGo.
Player B is Kemp.

This is long, sorry, but I’ve been accused of collusion…
I’m in 1st place, just made a trade with my brother who is in 6th place and fill holes at C and 1B in an effort to crack the top 4 and make the playoffs. The 2nd place team is calling the trade too one-sided in my favor and is suspicious there might be collusion.
Batting roster in the league holds like this:
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, 3 UTIL
I have Cabrera at 1B, McCann at C.
Here’s the trade with my brother, who just lost C. Santana at C and had Cantu as his 1B…
I gave: Adrian Gonz. (had been in one of my UTIL spot)
V-Mart (had been in one of my UTIL spot)
M. Young (was my 3B)
C. Hart (was one of my OF)
I got: D. Wright (replace Young)
M. Holliday (replace Hart)
(By losing Adrian and V-Mart from my UTIL, it means that Span and Ludwick move from spot starters to everyday starters in those UTIL spots.)
My brother before the trade: waiver wire catcher to replace Santana, waiver wire everyday 1B (since Cantu is now platooning), Wright, Holliday
His starters after the trade: Adrian Gonzalez, V-Mart, M. Young, and Hart
My brother downgraded from Holliday to Hart, and from Wright to Young….but instead of random schmohawk C and 1B from the waiver wire, he got V-Mart and Adrian.
I tried to explain to the 2nd place guy that it was needs-based and is pretty even, even though I was happy to land the trade. He’s not so sure.
Does this appear to be collusion to you?

Alright Grey, day three of my trying to get this deal done. Refresher: I’m trying to part with Latos/Strasburg, and I proposed to you those two for Josh Johnson and Josh Beckett. You replied that you didnt like Beckett in that deal, that you thought I could get better. It looks like if I do get a deal done, it’s going to have to be with this guy as there are no other bites in my league. So if I tried to pry someone other than Beckett to go along with Johnson, which one(s) on his staff would you go for instead: Matt Cain, Jason Hammel, Jair Jurrjens, Francisco Cordero, Edinson Volquez, and Francisco Liriano ( HIGHLY unlikely he will part with Liriano ). Btw, 16 team h2h. P.S. If you’re ever in the Santa Monica area, my bartender girlfriend will provide you with all the Daiquiris you want for your help with my fantasy teams:)

@Enrique: If it does mean a stretch of regular playing time, it seems like a good time to own him… from Baseball America:
“since joining Triple-A Pawtucket eight days ago, Lowell has been the best hitter in the International League and perhaps all of the minors. In his second game, Lowell went 4-for-4 and smacked three doubles. Three days later, Lowell smacked three home runs at Toledo. He followed that up in his next game with another three-hit night, this time going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, leaving his numbers through five games at .500/.500/1.727. “

Player B:

@Grey: ok thanks brotha…i’m on it….DL’d Youk, dropped Volquez, picked up Headley and Benji and held off on Kubel…gonna hold Santana for now and hope Hammy comes back soon to cover Howard’s Utility spot…if Hammy stays out more than another day or two or goes on DL will drop Santana and pick up Kubel. Ugh!

Jaso, Yorvit, Bengie, Snyder, Ruiz, Iannetta?
I’m in 1st and unfortunately dropped Soto for Santana a couple months ago. F the Sawx and their unnecessary over-hustle…

Well Grey, its done. Deal between 2 first-placed teams.I know you didn’t like the trade, but I addressed a need and removed a future problematic situation by dealing two guys who may or may not be pitching during my fantasy playoffs, which it looks like I’ll make.
I give:
STEPHEN DREW (who has disappointed me and whom I would have dropped if the rest of the deal went through anyway)
BEN ZOBRIST (heres the gamble, I’m counting on Beckham to produce at 2nd and has recently)
STEPHEN STRASBURG (Our line-ups in this league are set weely and his two missed starts last week caused me to lose to a last place team)
MAT LATOS (another guy who to a lesser extent is being treated with white gloves, he was an unexpected bonus that I got off the waiver wire early in the season)
I get:
Jeter, Josh Johnson, and Beckett
My 16 team h2h pitching staff now looks like this: Sabathia, Gallardo, Price, Johnson, Beckett, Marmol, and the last one based on match-ups (Travis Wood, Bobby Jenks, Duensing, Zimmerman, and Storen)
P.S. Tried for Cain instead of Beckett, but he didn’t bite.

@Grey: I’ve seen a few things, such as http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2010/08/torii-hunter-agrees-to-give-up-center-field-for-angels.html
http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/03/torri-hunter-will-start-in-right-field-for-first-time-since-1999/?synd=1
But nothing about what they plan to do with Rivera. But a writer on fangraphs has suggested reduced playing time for Rivera and/or Matsui
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/torii-hunter-right-fielder/
[Reply]
@royce!: Yeah, I saw all of those. Reduced for Rivera and Matsui makes sense. Wish there was an actual confirmation that Bourjos would be their every day center fielder.

Who is the better Youkilis replacement? The Red Sox are saying he’s likely out for the season.
Alex Gordon, Jhonny Peralta, Felipe Lopez, Neil Walker, and Chris Johnson are the options. No specific category needs.

What, besides “caught stealing,” can CS stand for? I’m looking at firstinning.com to check out league leaders in SB, and it says lists 58 under “CS” for Bourjos, which can’t be true. Their database must be messed up…there’s another dude who apparently has been caught over 70 times.

@Grey:
The Washington Nationals placed slugger Adam Dunn on waivers on Tuesday afternoon, as part of the standard procedure that involves almost all players this time of the baseball season, according to sources. But Dunn is expected to generate a lot of interest from other teams, and if he is going to be traded — which seems unlikely at this point — it will happen in the immediate future.

@Grey: this is going back on my previous question about me trying to get Doc. Again, for clarity’s sake, here’s my whole roster:
My roster:
C – Suzuki
1B – Fielder
2B – Weeks
3B – Longoria
SS – Andrus
OF – CarGo
OF – Holliday
OF – Kemp
UTIL – Pence
UTIL – Wright
BN – Krispie
DL – Utley
SP – JJ
SP – Verlander
SP – Kershaw
SP – Floyd
SP – Lewis
SP – Hamels
SP – Scherzer
RP – Feliz
RP – Soria
RP – K- Rod
RP – Capps
RP – Aardsma
I’m trying to just shore up my roster for that stretch run. I’ve got an offer out there to the same guy, who said he’ll probably take it, he was just working on shit tonight and didn’t have a chance to really look at it. Anyway, it’s my Krispie/Kershaw/Scherzer for his Lester/Price. I know you’re not too high on Price, but what do ya think about this deal? I could always pick up someone like Wells, Quentin, or another hot bat (not sure of who) to replace Krispie and get similar production. I also kind of look at it as Kershaw and Lester are a wash, leaning slightly to Lester and Price/Hot Bat for Krispie/Scherzer. What say ye, sir?

In a H2H OBP league, I was just offered Howard for Werth/Nunez. I would replace Nunez with Heilman to make up a truly magical suckfecta along with Lidge and Hanrahan. Most teams only have 3 closers so I would still compete in that cat.
I’m in first, just looking for some playoff fire power…What do you think? Worried enough about an ankle sprain to not make this deal?

@Grey: You told one commenter that Latos would be at the bottom of the Top 20 near Carpenter and Haren next year…. is that pitchers or overall? In my opinion, he belongs around the bottom of the top 20 SPs, around $15-18 at this point, but nowhere near the top 20 overall. I say this because I estimate him around the #6 overall pitcher YTD.
