Who doesn’t love to show their frenemies their fantasy baseball teams in October and say, “Look at what I won with?”  Then they see Mike Aviles and they’re confounded, “How did you win with Mike Aviles?”  That is the secret to fantasy baseball in September, young ninja.  (BTW, if you’re gonna be a ninja and dress like a ninja then you’ll want to get a better shampoo, the dandruff is kinda giving you away on that black.) If you win your league, I guarantee someone will look at your team at the end of the year and be completely confused by some of the guys you own.

Daniel HudsonWilson BetemitDid the other teams in your league quit? No, frenemy, I was playing hot guys.  This is imperative at this time of the year.  And imperative is an important word to know.  Mike Aviles has not only been incredibly hot, but Aviles will confound your frenemies!  Adam Jones wasn’t great this year, he’s hitting in September.  Even Carlos Gomez is stealing bases like he was born to do.  You also need to cut any dead weight.  This is, of course, for redraft leagues more than keepers.  You can’t go dropping Matt Kemp in all leagues. (Though it would feel nice to, wouldn’t it?)  Alfonso Soriano was good… Five years ago.  Later!  You loved Jimmy Rollins so much when you drafted him you sang Boogie Down Productions’ “The J, the I, the M, the M The Y, the J, the I, the M… It’s Jimmy!”  Then your friends mocked you and now you’re stubbornly holding onto Rollins just to save face.  Lose face and Jimmy.   There’s no reward for winning with Josh Hamilton instead of Casper Wells.  If you can, load up on guys that are playing in games that matter.  Jose Guillen has a lot more incentive than Alex RiosWill Venable’s games matter a whole lot more than Nick Markakis.  Players that are trying to prove their worth for a starting job in next year’s lineup are lot more enticing than vets who are just coasting.  You, on the other hand — yes, the hand you’re scratching your butt with — you should not be coasting.

    Fine…..

*reluctantly picks Matt Kemp back up*

  2. El Famous Burrito says:
    (link)

That Matt Kemp-free day was one of the best days of my life, man. The sun shined a little brighter, food tasted better, assholes giving me the finger on the highway didn’t seem to bother me as much, and despite hearing it a thousand times, Skynyrd on the radio never sounded better.

    Man, good times.

  3. Tony says:
    (link)

@Grey: the guy that barely beat me was making fun of my team of “nobodys” during the week, logan morrison, david murphy, tabata, and aviles got me there, play the hot hand razzers…..

  4. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Tony: Yeah, you gotta go out like that.

  5. Eric C. says:
    (link)

Who will confound my frenemies more? David Murphy or Wilson Betemit? :)

  6. Christopher says:
    (link)

Dropped Phillips – with his hand and HanRam’s elbow, there might be one good ball player between them!
In H2H non-keeper, I’m playing for third (who knew we were going to play both hitters and pitchers in the semis…). Empty spot with Phillips gone and Thornton and Meek are available, though I already have Franklin, Capps, Hensley and Cordero. Perhaps I should use the spot to stream starters. Thoughts?

  7. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Eric C.: Betemit… But Murphy’s the better pick up.

    @Christopher: Stream SPs.

  8. robbiec says:
    (link)

If only Yahoo would let me drop Teixeira. We had some good times back in July and August. Now 3 weeks of total suckitude and taking up a spot on my bench…

  9. Back to Minors says:
    (link)

the toughest thing for me in playing fantasy baseball is making myself stay patient. I always feel that if i drop Carlos Pena tonight, he will then proceed to reel off 5 consecutive days with a homer. that said, it’s tough to drop these guys, but if Pena doesn’t jack one tonight he’ll be gone. Stubbs is out there, he will be my pickup.

  10. Back to Minors says:
    (link)

btw, i pitched Garza last night against your advice and it bit me. at least i had Hamels as the equalizer.

  11. Back to Minors says:
    (link)

btw, btw…Hamels has been on an AMAZING run.

  12. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Back to Minors: I’d grab Stubbs over him. Sucks on Garza. Yeah, Hamels has been incredible.

  13. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Speaking of Hamels, my trade of Ubaldo/Perez for Hamels/Soria might have single handedly helped me in my playoff run. What has Ubaldo done lately? Not the same shizz Hamels has been doing (on the mound and in the sack).

  14. Christopher says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thanks Grey. BTW, I whole-heartedly feel I am vying for third because of this website. Another dacquari coming your way when I get home tonight. Again, if my offense had shown up last week, I’d be playing in the championship round. Should have dropped Phillips sooner…

  15. Christopher says:
    (link)

@Back to Minors: I had the same duo going last night. I held onto Garzo for too long.

  16. timSTi says:
    (link)

@Wilsonian: Gomez or Tabata for the rest of this week? 12tm h2h finals.

  17. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

But in all seriousness, I have a next year’s keeper question for ya. It’s a 16 Team H2H in which I finished 5th (highest ever in my 3rd year in the league – league’s been around for 5). We keep 5, and there are no draft implications or time limits…our draft essentially starts in round 6. Here’s my rosterio:

Buck, Dunn, MMD, Wright, Starlin, Hunter, Lind, Murphy, Ike, McLouth, Hamilton, Smooth – DL

Lester, Latos, Haren, Bills, Cain, Ervin, Aroldis, Hanrahan, Capps, Axford, Storen

I’m pretty sure that Lester, Hamilton and Wright will be joining me next season, but I’m not sure about the other 2 spots. What do you think?

  18. timSTi says:
    (link)

@Christopher: I as well had the same Garza/Hamels duo last night. Do I sense a trend here on Razzball?

  19. Back to Minors says:
    (link)

@Christopher: I holding out that Garza’s next 2 starts (SEA, KC) make up for last night.

  20. Art Vandelay says:
    (link)

Would you start Shields at the Stadium tonight?

  21. Buge Hoobs says:
    (link)

    How about a C?

Considering that now there might actually be a legitimate injury/reason for Scioscia to bench Naploi, are there any catcher’s out there that you would drop him for ?

  22. MINI DONKEY IS DEAD says:
    (link)

my new name for Napoli is DNaPoli

  23. Elijah says:
    (link)

    @Grey:

Hamels! Who needs ya Josh Johnson! On the other hand, argh Latos…I dont even know if I should hold onto him or look for a hot hand for the finals?

  24. Fremont says:
    (link)

Is Andino a reasonable option at MI down the stretch? Would you prefer him over the likes of Infante, Sanchez, Theriot…I do need AVG, but I would also like some steals (and a few homers?) too.

  25. ellis says:
    (link)

in a vacuum, s. drew or h. kendrick?

  26. Buge Hoobs says:

    @ Grey

Hot-Warm hitting C’s available Yadir, Avila, Ellis, AJPierz

  27. Jake in Columbus says:
    (link)

Couldn’t believe it when I read JarJar and Floyd were both out for Monday and beyond considering my opponent owns both of them.
I own Garza and Hamels as well, but only started Ole King Cole since I had a bunch of 2-start options.
Am I the only one who sets an alarm for 3AM during playoff weeks to grab 2-start pitchers on Yahoo before anyone else?

  28. DrEasy says:
    (link)

I did feel bad dropping Josh Johnson, Nolasco, Hughes, Jenks, Alfonso Soriano. Feeling even worse dropping Fitlhy Sanchez, cause he actually went on fire. Currently confounding my frenemies with Rodney, Zambrano, Dan Hudson, Tabata, Neil Walker, EYJ. Considering Gomez, Venable, Freddy Sanchez, Aviles.

  29. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Grey: yep, have to keep 5. We do have off season trades where you can trade draft picks for players or players for players or players and picks for players and picks, eh, you get my drift. I was leaning Latos and Dunn, too, but didn’t know if Haren or Chapman should come into the mix, or even Smooth, but he was a long shot in the first place.

And thank you very much on my Hamels comment…

  30. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Jake in Columbus: you were the only one until you made that comment… Thanks for the idea!!!

  31. Elijah says:

  33. Steve says:

As you know Grey, I’m, not one to wish misfortune upon others, but I hope that ***hole Granderson drains the life out of Brian’s team, just as he did mine.

Elsewhere, in the keeper I have Bills, Erv-San and Cain available to me today. I’m 15 IP over pace and I’m away next week with possibly limited access to my team.

    Start ‘em all?

  34. Steve says:

@Steve: Need those Games Started points (emoticon).

  35. Grey

    @Steve: Ha… Start them all.

  36. Wilsonian says:

It’s early (day 2 of the 2 week battle), so I need everything under the sun… who do I start tonight:

    OF: Victorino
    UTIL: Bruce
    UTIL: Stubbs
    BN: Wright
    BN: Kemp

  37. Jake in Columbus says:
    (link)

Thanks guys. Since Yahoo has 2-week playoff finals it’s a little trickier. Depending on how the week goes with my extra starts, might look at vulturing extra saves plus ERA/WHIP come Friday @ 3AM. If you drop someone after then, they can’t be picked up Sunday by your frenemy to use for the next week due to a 2-day waiver period. I was #4 seed. Beat #5 and #1 (in a 4-4 tiebreaker), now on to #2. More than a little luck, but stuff like that doesn’t hurt.

Need to start 2 of Valencia, Thome or Rolen tonight?
Rolen plays vs. Bush in MIN. Valencia, Thome vs. Carmona in MIN.
Rolen is 2 for 10 vs. Bush. Thome .222 in 18 abs vs. Carmona.

Carmona is a ground baller and pitching well lately. But Twinks could clinch tonight.

I’m thinking Valencia and Rolen but Thome’s due for a hr. Could be persuaded Valencia, Thome. What do you think?

  40. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Grey: cool, thanks, as always…but of course, your daiquiris depend on me winning a couple of leagues. Ha!

  41. Bob says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thanks. I don’t get a chance to post that often, but continue to read all your posts (and most of the commenters), and I think this year your insights are better than ever. I’ve currently got two firsts and two seconds going in my four leagues (two of which could go either way), so I’m getting quite a bit of actionable intelligence from you.

Anyway, thanks again for everything you do. And good luck to you in all your leagues.

  42. Grey

    Grey says:

@Fremont: Sorry, I missed your question at first. Yeah, give Andino a shot.

@Bob: No problem. Thanks for the kind words!

Start Nick Blackburn v. Indians tomorrow? Championship week so I definitely don’t want to ruin my ERA/WHIP but Ks and Ws are always good. My other choice would be to put in a 5th closer(Storen).

  45. Howard says:

@Grey Do you think Moreland has any keeper relevance for next year? I’d like to drop him for Aviles at the UT slot but have to think about the future.

  46. BSA says:

@Steve: Bite Me – Too Bad, So Sad hope karma doesn’t send you back to 5th by next week. I would imagine you had a claim on him. HA!
    @Grey: Is “Bob” Schmohawks Bob?

  47. Big Nate says:

Can you name a few “diamond in the rough” starting pitchers that might help from here on out? I’m looking on my waiver wire and see:

Is any guy here an immediate grab?

  48. Elijah says:

I wouldn’t…he will undoubtedly be ranked too high, at best you look to break even.

  49. Bob says:

  50. Elijah says:

  51. BSA says:

Good to see you here as you have been pretty stealth lately, not as much as Al, but still pretty quiet.

  55. Bob says:
    (link)

@BSA: I meant that it’s not like it’s a chat room. You’ve got to hang around and wait for someone to post before you can respond.

And I have been quiet. It doesn’t seem cool to run smack when you’re in the lead.

Way different feeling from last year where I was making a desperate run at the end, and ended up in that first place tie the day after the season ended, thanks to HR’s by Cabrera and Kubel I think it was in that Detroit/Minn one game play-off. That was intense.

  56. Bob says:
    (link)

@BSA: Don’t want to get in the middle of your smack talk with Steve. It’s too hilarious.

  57. Grey

    Grey says:

@Bob: Wait, did you win last year too? Damn, BSA and Steve.

  59. BSA says:

@Bob: You could have run your mouth from first without offending. We have been at this enough.

As to that Smack Talkin’ Kiwi – due to the advice and watchin’ people’s strategies he sounds like one of those little ankle biters yippin inside a locked car as you walk by…..

On that note I need to walk out for a bit and get everyone to bed.

Gotta go before I open my mouth and lurker Al Ko brings me one step closer to Plucky.

  60. BSA says:
    (link)

@Grey: Don’t let Bob fool ya. He has a co-conspirator this year. So he is hoping to put two years together for one trophy since he split with Doc last year.

  61. Steve says:
    (link)

@Bob: Don’t make me come over there ;-)

Brian – of course I had a claim in on him! And I’m starting him in my keeper (had him on all four teams in fact) so I’m still clinging to some hope. So I’m better qualified than most to speak on the subject of Grandy false dawns ;-)

@BSA: Oh, so he split with Doc last year?

  65. ThE sHiT says:
    (link)

@Grey: BTW, I drafted Zobrist this year only because I didn’t stumble upon Razzball until the second week of the season. I follow your advice as much as possible and it is clearly obvious: last year I finished 12/16 in baseball, this year I’m in the finals out of 16 again with a good chance of winning it all. Thanks so much for all the help Grey! You are THE man!

  66. Grey

    Grey says:

@ThE sHiT: No problem, hopefully you win.

  69. BSA says:

Grey my man- What is your feeling about Baker for his supposed two start week? I want to make a play at moving up a spot or two in K and W and he is the only additional two start option available (I have Ubaldo, Price and Sanchez, which is nice). I dream of a sneaky two wins and 10K, but fear no wins and a Baker’s dozen runs allowed in two, or one start, and era and whip are also tight…

Thanks, Grey. My issue is with the playoff tiebreakers.

In a 12 team/12 categories H2H league. They initially used ERA as the tiebreaker in a playoff tie game(Which I didn’t care for). Now they have moved to H2H record during the regular season……Full disclosure, I just dominated my league and lost in my first playoff game to the 4 seed on the tiebreaker…….I feel this H2H record is pretty lame as well, when you consider the general randomness of 1 individual week/and as it would happen the 3 day All-Star week period was game 2 of the series.

Am I just in denial and being a baby, or do either of these (nonchangable) tiebreaker options seem like a fair way to settle a playoff tie?

Sorry to get windy…..Grey, the blog kicks ass. You guys all do an awesome job.

I had always wondered just how much Razzball improved my skills over the past year, and I think it finally hit me today when I was calculating how the standings would have been had my $180 grand prize H2H league been a roto league.

I placed 6th in the H2H playoffs. I would have been 1st in roto with a whopping 109.5 points.

I think it shows just how much I’ve subconsciously adopted a roto mentality with each post!

Though I didn’t win anything this year, the thought of me having been the best overall manager will definitely be enough to get me through the 7 months of fantasy down time.

@Wilsonian: Oops, missed it. Lose Bruce and Stubbs for Betemit and Johnson.

  101. @Grey: Nice BDP reference. I guess I’m doing something right because my frenemies are indeed saying, “How do you win with Mike Aviles and Daniel Hudson?” Sounds a lot like last year when guys were saying, “Martin Prado? Brian Dunsing? FTW?!” …and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t trade Nick Swisher for a bottle of Tropical Fantasy and one of those lil buttah crunch joints that Ghostface Killah is always talking about.

and yeah it felt awfully good to get rid of that bad bad Panda. It was liberating, like a good crap after a night of drinking whisky.

Speaking of whiskey, you watch Boardwalk Empire? What you think? I thought it was ok, and I’ll stay with it to give it a shot. Great production design and costumes – half the reason I watched it since I had been on set a few times… Tired of the Scorcese montage though and I kept hoping Buscemi would start talking like The Mink in “Miller’s Crossing.” I would like to hear much snappier dialogue being used.

@Grey: it’s cool, I appreciate the help. Would you then drop either one of those guys for the Valencia, Thome, Pacman for the weekend?

@3FingersBrown: @Steve: I liked BE. Agree that the production design and costumes were the highlight. I feel like with most high profile new serieses (?) the first few episodes are a chore of backstory and not wanting to give too much away. Mad Men, Wire, Treme, etc. They all felt like you had to give them at least 4 episodes before you were hooked. (Treme actually never got there for me.) Scorcese felt self-derivative at times. Hacky comedian during violent montage, tracking shots, iris in and outs.

@Steve: They sure look like they’ve given up. Then again they look like they gave up in April. Buncha bums. Who doesn’t like the popular Skynyrd songs?

    @Wilsonian: Johnson for Valencia…

@Grey: Wow, great call on Ervin.

@Grey: Man my spelling was bad there. Just got out of the training course – my head must be scrambled.

Erv-San was a great start for me today too – back in first in the keeper. Unfortunatle it’s due to gaining 1.5 in Games Started and 0.5 in Losses (+ 1 in ERA) so it may be short-lived. 3.5 points covering the first three teams.

@Steve: Hey, at least you’re in first. Gotta get you one win this year. Though Fat Drunk Elvis/AL may have different thoughts.

@Grey: Gonna be hard being away next week. Not as if I won’t have web access, but it’s a family holiday y’know…

Think there’s a case for burning through my starts? Got Roy, Ubaldo and Lilly going tomorrow. Tempted to sit Lilly…

  110. @Grey: Yeah that in/out tracking shot is played. I’m thinking he’s related to his dolly grip and promised his mom he’d keep getting him work. He’s really getting too self-referential in his old age. I expected to hear the Rolling Stones start playing… Buscemi’s a pleasure to watch (although how does he always end up with hot, young chicks in every film – no matter how old and skeletor-ish he looks) but I think Michael Pitt (and the weird, wall-eyed mob boss from Sopranos) were my favorites. Trainspotting chick is good too.

Cool thing about that boardwalk set is that it’s actually built in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on the East River. It’s huge – and built to pretty much stay there. They just CGed out the Manhattan skyline. Too bad the real Atlantic City doesn’t look anywhere near as cool, I’d be more inclined to blow my money there if it still looked like BE.

Hey Aviles is the tits. I can’t believe I held on to Panda so long when he and Morrison have been sitting on waivers (and I could move Figgy/McGehee to 3B). I think so much of winning this game is knowing when to cut bait on a bad investment. Any players that you couldn’t bring yourself to cut?

  111. @Grey: Just on a lark, I was wondering if you or anyone you know ever pitched anything to Sci-Fi Channel. I’m aiming to do just that and I’d like to hear from someone who’s pitched to them before.

    @Steve: I’d sit him.

@3FingersBrown: Ha… Yeah, Rudy asked me if he played Gimme Shelter. What, the Borgata doesn’t do it for you? In some leagues, I wish I cut all my players. Figgy’s one I’d like to roast on an open fire. Can’t believe I drafted that schmohawk. I should listen to my own advice.

@3FingersBrown: I know someone who has. I have not. I don’t roll in that genre.

@Grey: Figgy is a prick. I hate his guts. If I had to pinpoint a player in my H2H semifinal opponent’s team that beat me on his own, it’s him. Big AVE, huge OBP and 3 steals.

Oh and probably those two RBIs…

@Steve: Rudy and I were talking about how fluky H2H is. Behrens was eliminated in our H2H league on Sunday and he finished in first. I think 5th and 6th teams are battling out or some stupidness. I’m pretty annoyed with H2H. I don’t know how people do it in fantasy football. It seems so arbitrary.

  116. Steve says:
    (link)

    @Grey: It’s 1st v 6th in our league.
To be fair, my belief in my inalienable right to win it may not be the league’s problem (emoticon)

    @Steve: Ha, probably true.

  118. @Grey: Just trying to get a bead on Sci-Fi channel – as in what they’re looking for these days. I have a good idea that people have told me to go to them with…

Borgota’s aight. It’s not on the Boardwalk though unfortunately. Better off anyway – I’m a degenerate at the dice table.

@Grey, @Steve: When Posey was doing lousy and Carlos Santana’s left leg was still attached to his body, I moved Posey for Figgy (keeper league) since I needed speed. He and Pagan combined won me last week. He’s actually been pretty good since I got him. If I win this, I won’t feel so bad about trading Posey.

On a side note, this is the first time in my H2H league that the number 1 & 2 are playing each other in finals. It was a crazy finish, 4 different teams were in first place on the last week – 3 on the last day. Yeah it’s fluky but I love the action. See above.

Definitely going to get involved in more roto leagues next year though.

@Grey: Is it a risky play with Kennedy or somewhat safe? I know the Rockies have been hot, but they haven’t been that good on the road. I guess I’m just wondering if throwing Kennedy out there is playing with fire.

  120. Grey

    Grey says:

@3FingersBrown: Yeah, haven’t been to the Borgata, just heard about it. Figgy’s been fine in the last two months or so, but he’s still death and I hate his stupid face.

@ThE sHiT: Rockies aren’t good on the road, but they’re a dangerous lineup. It’s playing with fire, but it could work out. Sorry, it’s not definitive to start him, but it’s risky. I would start him as a streamer if I needed it.

@Grey: Ok is Kennedy better than James McD vs. HOU?

    grey won’t tell you this , ‘cuz it’s all in-sider (hush/hush) shizz ,
and he’s bound by some sort of perverted professional code of ethics ,
so i’ll give it to you , straight ==> chacin is a lead-pipe cinch !
gold star play of the month !!!
word , from the bay area , is that the freak has become so unsettled ,
at the prospect of this match-up , that he has been experiencing severe
stomach cramps and dysentery “issues” .
he has taken to smoking , heavily .
