Chien Ming Out All Summer Wang
Chien Ming Wang is out at least 6-10 weeks with a foot sprain. (Yes, Wang limp until September.) Drop Wang. Drop him now. Definitely a blow for the Yanks. (Yes, usually Wang takes blow, not dealt one.) If you were counting on him to pitch you to the fantasy pennant, you’ve got bigger issues. (Yes, your Wang problems are “big” issues.) Who are the Yankees turning to? Dan Giese. The new Yankee starter is a 31 year old phenom who has pitched for the Phillies and Giants affiliates the past two years. Did we say phenom? We meant journeyman. But he had been a reliever who was known to have good stuff. The Yanks made him a starter and his AAA numbers this year were fantastic - 59 IP, 1.98 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 51/14 K/BB. Maybe he’s the next Aaron Small or Shawn Chacon? Or at least another Darrell Rasner. Anyway, here’s what else I saw in fantasy baseball:
Fernando Rodney - He’s been activated and he gave up 3 ER in a third of an inning. Welcome back!
Marcus Thames - 7HR in 9 Games. A frequent commenter RT added him 6 games ago. That’s awesome (for him)! But this got me thinking, we should divvy up all of the streakiest hitters and everyone should take one. So whenever your guy goes off, you tell everyone else. Not sure how to implement this, seems like a thing for the forums.
Justin Verlander - So he should’ve got the win, but, and I know it’s of little consolation, at least he was up for a win.
Curtis Granderson - 3 steals on the year. Pudge has 6. That’s awesome. I’m so bummed I didn’t get Grandy in any league. He’s bonafide!
Fred Lewis - .326 and 2 HRs in June, but only two steals. He can steal five in a week if he gets the urge.
Ryan Howard - Made his case for the heavyweight championship with 2 HR and a triple against the Sawx. Howard’s been hot of late with 4 HR and 12 RBI in his last four games while cutting down his Ks to once every 4 AB. The gauntlet has been set Mr. Fielder - do you accept the challenge?
JD Drew - Everyone on the Sawx seems to be getting hurt except Drew. Now he’s on a streak - 7 HR in 17 G. I bet the HR in Philly so pissed off the locals. Who’s next on the Sawx to get hot? Sean Casey? Julio Lugo?
Andrew Miller - 7 IP, 1 ER. The Marlins are the last team to ever play in Seattle. Marlins pitchers now understand what everyone was talking about.
Bill Bavasi - We have a guy from Seattle in our cash league that always ends up with Mariners and even he admits Bill Bavasi is god awful. Let’s count the ways. Sexson to a monster contract. A rotation that includes Washburn, Batista, and a $10MM/per Carlos Silva. Paying off Adrian Beltre after a career year. Jose Vidro at DH. Extension for a Japanese catcher that his pitchers don’t like throwing to. I’d let Bill Bavasi into any of my cash leagues next year…except for a Razzball one…he’s a natural.

Fielder rejects the challenge until he sees the light and eats a Big Mac!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
The Schmohawks pulled Marcus Thames off the Razzball Commenters League waiver wire and he rewarded The Schmoes with two opening day dingers. Woohoo!!
June 17th, 2008 at 12:09 am
Beltre has a gold glove at 3B and has put up consistently solid numbers each year. While his contract year was an outlier, he has been one of the few bright spots for the Mariners. But yes, Bavasi does suck you forgot to mention Rafael Soriano for Horacio Ramirez and giving up way too much for Bedard.
@Remis: I’ll admit Beltre was a less egregious pickup than the others but for $13MM/per, he’s had three seasons closer to Pedro Feliz than an all-star 3B. His adjusted OPS+ for the 3 years are 93, 105, 112. BA of .255, .268, .276. Topped at 26 HR. No 100 RBI seasons. Not saying he isn’t a solid player but they overpaid. If Beltre is a bright spot, that’s just an indictment on the non-Ichiro and Putz contingent.
Ha…forgot about Soriano for Horacio. Nice one. Jury’s out on the Bedard trade but not looking good so far. At least he didn’t trade F-Her…

If this is the worst that can be said about Granderson, I don’t feel that bad with him as my CF. The steals may be low but the power isn’t bad. He’ll heat up. Patience.
June 17th, 2008 at 6:11 am
Whew just got back from vacation and saw the Blue Jays/Cubs on Friday and the Tigers/Dodgers Saturday, now I’m back at home and watched the Midwest League home run hitting contest. Here’s what I saw…..
A.J. Burnett was all over the place, he hit 97 at the beginning of the game but couldn’t throw strikes. By the end (6th inning) he was throwing 92-93 and looked better but his attitude looked horrible. He was agitated by everything that went wrong which leads me to….Alexis Rios who let a fly ball get over hs head and instead of making a play at the wall winced like a baby and let the ball bounce off the wall and get by him. From the reaction he got from the Jays fans he plays like that alot. Vernon Wells looked powerless.
Granderson looks like he’s busting our of his funk. It’s no suprise the Tigers are playing better with Thames in the lineup and Sheffield on the DL. Getting Sheff’s albatros bat of of there has definatly helped. I know Penny is hurting but he was hitting 94 on the gun all day long so it’s not like he was tossing softballs. As far as the Dodgers go that team is toothless. A lineup of .275 hitters with no power. Miguel Cabrerra is an absolute dork. He’s always yakking or clowning with other players from his own or other team. You either find it’s cute that he likes to clown around or like me would like to see one of the 10,000 seagulls take a massive dump on his head all at once.
The Midwest All-Star game is today and I’ll give a report of what goes on at it. It’s hard to read anything into the home run contest but I can say Ian Gac has temendous power 17hrs 52 rbis are leaders in the league and he’s hitting over .300. He has a quick bat for a big guy and less of a loopy swing like some of the other big guys have. He hit several balls out of the park. Felix Carrasco won the contest but he’s only hitting .250 ish. The Midwest League is tough on hitters and it’s become one of the best places for prospects. It’s a prospect league as top players are assigned here usualy they will jump from here to AA.

Willie Randolph Fired…..the Mets need to trade some players not fire the manager. What the hell is giving Willie the axe gonna do? You still have the same players. Is it Willie’s fault Wright is slumping? Is it Willie’s fault Pedro and Alou are hurt half the season? Is it Willie’s fault Reyes and Beltran werent hitting until recently? Is it Willie’s fault their bullpen gives up leads left and right and Wagner blew 3 saves in a row? I think not, the Mets still stink with or without Willie. Make some trades to shake thing up! All firing coaches does is send a message that upper-management thinks the team isnt playing to their full potential….I think their wrong. This is what the Mets are, a middle of the road team.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:27 am
I’m so excited for Willie Randolph being a coach at the all-star game. Will he still wear a Mets uniform? Will he wear a generic uni that says “Baseball”? The possibilities for unintentional, awkward comedy are endless.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:29 am
@Freak: he was named as the NL coach?
@Frank Rizzo: If only 3 steals from Granderson was his only problem. Also, 3 steals after 70 games is unacceptable. Ryan Howard has one. So does Giambi.
@Emcobra: Great report. Thanks so much. Miggy has always been like that, that’s why I always mention that I’m surprised Olivo has done well without him. They used to clown like two 8-year-old boys who didn’t know they weren’t supposed to touch each other in certain places.
@wakeNbake: Willie’s taking the heat for their GM and their players. For sure.
@Freak: Ha…
June 17th, 2008 at 7:48 am
@wakeNbake: Clint Hurdle named him as an assistant.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:07 am
@Freak: Strong showing. Wearing “a generic uni that says’Baseball” is comedy gold right there.
I got a chuckle listening to Mike and Mike this morning as they were talking about the same thing. They mentioned that maybe he would be “The Willie Randolphs” and support himself as a NL team.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Must I wait for Eric Gagne to come back to cut him, before they announce hes not closing any more?
@wakeNbake: Is your DL slot that backed up?
June 17th, 2008 at 8:45 am
@Grey: A little I currently have Chris Young, Wainwright, Gagne on DL…not to mention Mike Gonzalez and Santiago Casilla but they dont count because there both returning in a day or 2.
@wakeNbake: How are you fielding a team with all of those DL’d guys? I don’t think Young’s going to be worth anything for a while. At least a month. And even when Young was pitching healthy, he wasn’t that good this year. Clean house, man.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:39 am
Dan Giese? He has done an excellent job leading GE. Who knew he can pitch? (Can he?)
June 17th, 2008 at 10:01 am
@Grey: if you had to cut 1 loose who would it be Gagne or Young?
June 17th, 2008 at 10:03 am
@everyone: which 3 would you all start out of these 5 tonight?
Conor Jackson vs. Justin Duchsherrer in Oakland
Nick Swisher vs. Ian Snell in Chicago
Jose Guillen vs. Joel Pineiro in STL
Chase Headley vs. Andy Pettitte in NYC
Robinson Cano vs. Randy Wolf in NYC
June 17th, 2008 at 10:03 am
@everyone: which 4 would you all start out of these 6 tonight?
Conor Jackson vs. Justin Duchsherrer in Oakland
Nick Swisher vs. Ian Snell in Chicago
Jose Guillen vs. Joel Pineiro in STL
Chase Headley vs. Andy Pettitte in NYC
Robinson Cano vs. Randy Wolf in NYC
Struggling David Wright vs. John Lackey
June 17th, 2008 at 10:07 am
@Zebo: Wright should never be sat no matter the slump, Cano, Guillen, Jackson
June 17th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I’m a Mariners fan and it has been painful. Poor Brandon Morrow will always have to suffer for the success that is Tim Lincecum out of the University of Washington. At least they called up Jeff Clement, he might have fantasy value since Johjima may move to 1st.
Pitching was a huge problem with Bavasi, but so was defense. Ibanez is a butcher in the field.
I live in Los Angeles, and I fear they have the same problem the Dodgers do: the people up top aren’t smart enough to hire smart people to work for them. Maybe they’ll finally play Clement and Balentien every day.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:27 am
if you had tulowitzki coming back would you trade tejada for figgins.
@wakeNbake: Young 1st.
@Zebo: Cano, Wright, Guillen and pick ‘em. I’m not crazy about the remaining matchups, probably throw Headley a bone if he’s in the starting lineup.
@Endless Summer: Balentien’s already gone.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:28 am
@Zebo: Guillen, Swisher, Headley, Jackson, Cano, Wright. I like Headley’s chances of having a good night against Pettitte.
@ben: I’d wait to see if Figgins can still run and Tulo can actually return. It’s a trade I would consider if I was in need of steals.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:40 am
@Grey: I hadn’t read that yet, but I figured as much with the Ichiro to RF news. Thanks Grey. I can’t wait to see Ibanez without Ihciro in CF next to him…
At least next year’s 1B/DH combo will be an improvement. I can’t imagine anyone sucking more than Sexson/Vidro this year.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:53 am
@Grey: Yeah, I should rank Wright higher. I probably would start Guillen, Swisher, Headley, and Wright. Cano against a LH strikeout pitcher in Wolf and Conor Jackson might hit well but D’backs have struggled for runs the past couple weeks.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:56 am
@Grey: Ricky Nolasco’s next couple of matchups…..@O
June 17th, 2008 at 10:58 am
@Grey: Ricky Nolasco’s next couple of matchups…..@Oak,TB,Was,@Col,@LAD….think he could have a good run?
@wakeNbake: I like him for Nats and Dodgers, the rest not crazy about, but he might put together a decent run. If you can stand the downside, give him a run.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
@everyone: The other owner just messaged me wondering if I would give him Ellsbury for Tex straight up. What do I do?
My team
C: Doumit
1B: Swisher, Co Jacks, Ortiz
2B: B. Phillips, Cano
3B: Wright, Headley
SS: Escobar
OF: Ellsbury, Hunter, Markakis, Guillen
I am among losers in Runs, RBI, OBP, SLG, leaders in batter K, SB,
Jacoby is carrying me in SB, but Tex would help me in the cats I am behind.
No speedster of value is on the waiver or free agent pool right now.
Should I
1) Jump
2) Squeeze some more out of him
3) Wait and see
@Zebo: Grab Tex. Deal with speed in a few weeks by trading someone else, if it’s a problem.
June 17th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
if Josh fields or Jerry Owens gets called up with Konerko going on the DL are they an add?
June 17th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
never mind they called up dewayne wise
June 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
@Grey: you are not at all concerned about Tex’s struggles this year? Although he is better in 2nd half, last year he was also very good in first half. I guess if I grab Tex, I can swing a Co Jacks or something like that for Juan Pierre, Taveras or Michael Bourn or so, when Ortiz gets back.
@Zebo: Tex already has more pre All-Star RBIs and runs than last year and he’s only two HRs off last year and he still has almost a month. Get Tex, then down the road trade for Pierre if you need to.
EDIT: Typo
June 17th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
@Grey: Just to be contrary, isn’t it possible Ellsbury returns first-round value this season? At the top of the Sox lineup, let’s say he scores 125 runs, hits 10-15 homers, drives in 65, and steals 65. Those are Reyes numbers, no?
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Reyes in the OF? Sure, it’s possible. Don’t you want the guy that has been doing this shizz for the last five years or you want rookie-nookie?
June 17th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Grey is right majority of the time, I already regretted not listening to him on Quentin and Liriano, I think I will do it.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Just offered to me:
Fred Lewis/Eric Byrnes for Torres.
Thought it was an odd offer, but I was thinking maybe some second half SB from Byrnes? Too risky?
Do you think Byrnes is done running for this year?
June 17th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
@Zebo: True dat. I generally agree that you should do the trade. Just playing Devil’s Advocate, much like Al Pacino in that awesome movie of the same name.
@Grey: Rookie-nookie! Always.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Can Eric the schmohawk Byrnes offset the loss of Jacoby, when Eric returns? By that I mean, 30 steals.
@RT: I trade away Torres for those two. Sure, why not?
@Zebo: Probably not offset, but ease the loss of? Yes, I’d think so.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
@Grey:
Honestly? I worry Byrnes is DL bound off and on all year instead of rebounding…. Do you think I can get one player of greater value?
June 17th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
@Steve: nice. i thought about making the Dan Giese/30 Rock joke but wasn’t sure anyone would get it.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
@RT: I am a little concerned too, hamstrings can affect runners, and is not something that heals, but takes time and rest. But Byrnes is burning on the wire, so it would be of no cost
June 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@Zebo:
As a runner, I totally here ya on that.
It’s actually a trade. We’re 18-teams deep so Byrnes is DL’d on a roster.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I am a steelers fan, and I watched Hines Ward and Lawrence Timmons have hamstring injuries, and they are never the same the whole season. It needs 6 months of inactivity to heal or a “summer of George.” But then again, didn’t Jose Reyes have a hamstring issue earlier in the year, and he seems to be fine.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Summer of George.
Niiiiiice.
June 17th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
I am in last place in a non keeper 10 team head to head and recently have been offered two deals
1. I am giving up Ellsbury and Oliver Perez (picked him up after his last implosion and doing ok) for Robinson Cano
2. I am giving up Tulo and Pujols for either Cantu, Theriot, Kemp or Kemp, Conor Jackson and Mark Reynolds
my roster is Soto, Giambi, Pujols, Wiggy, Braun, Stephen Drew, Markakis, Pence, Ellsbury, Hart, Bruce and Crawford
Is there any reason that I should not kill these people for trying to take advantage of me?
June 17th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
@Grey: You like Crawford for Tex? I have Bourn, Rios and Markakis for steals.
@HungryHungryHuskey: Kill them, Triple H.
@Steve: I’d take Tex.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
I’m not terribly happy with Guthrie…would youse guys drop him for Campillo?
June 17th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
How do u feel about Blalock when he returns? Also Giambi’s numbers arent that bad actually their pretty good considering his horrible start. Should he be on waivers in any league
@Freak: I’d try and sneak Campillo onto my roster, but I wouldn’t drop Guthrie for him.
@wakeNbake: He shouldn’t be on waivers, no. I don’t think highly of Blalock.
June 17th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Grey
You have to check out Hard Core RCL Smack right now.
Iowa Cubs is a frikkin genius.
June 17th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
which move would u rather make…
u receive Rollins for Tejada and Billingsley
or
u receive Rollins for Rios and Billingsley
June 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
keep in mind I also have berkman so its nive having tejada
June 17th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
@Grey: Okay…my other options to drop are Maddux, Randy Wolf or James Shields.
Of those three, I’d probably lean towards Maddux.
Waddya think?
June 17th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Crap, my waffling has lead to someone else snatching him.
Hopefully, camp will have a crappy start and this guy will go back to streaming.
@Mike: Tejada and Billingsley.
@Freak: Bye, bye, Maddux.
@Freak: Oh, well.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Tulo: 2/2 tonight. It may be A+ or AAA but it bodes well for Friday that he is hitting. Period.
@RT: I can’t wait to drop Bobby Crosby.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
@Grey:
I can’t wait to drop Brendon Harris. After I DL’d Hairston.
June 17th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
He’s coming into a hot(ish) offence. I can actually see the Rox making another run.
@RT: I’m holding my breath he doesn’t reinjure anything from now until the end of the season. I just need 15 HRs/45 RBIS and I’ll be happy.
June 17th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
@Grey:
That sounds about right.
I used to work for the SkySox and the lads say he looks really smooth out there. They said it shocking to think he was injured the way he was.
@RT: Don’t think he has a history of injury to worry about, just a matter of him being fully recovered, ya know?
June 17th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I hear ya… I’m definitely holding my breath.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
@RT: Are your lads saying anything about Barmes?
June 17th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
@Freak:
Didn’t ask, sorry. It was a quick IM about Tulo. I’ll ask tomorrow.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Thames: 8HR in 10 Games. Unreal.
