Buy Pork Belly Futures
Cornerstone, nay, cornerboulder, Prince Fielder is off to another yawnstipating start. Last year he hit 8 homers through the month of May. Boca Burgers were blamed last year, but maybe he just can’t swing a bat in cold weather because all he can think about is getting back to his hotel room and putting on his Snuggie. He’ll only be 25 in May and is still completely capable of 40 HRs on the year. If you can somehow wrestle Fielder away from an impatient owner, go for it (try a roofie!). Anyway, here’s some more players to buy and sell this week in fantasy baseball:
BUY
Jason Frasor – Newest victim of Scott Downs’ Syndrome? Maybe. Or maybe… Downs Goes… Frasor! Downs Goes… Frasor!
Aaron Hill – He’s 27 years old — yo, that shizz is magical, Copperfield! — he has power for a 2nd baseman and he’s not a drain on average. Best case scenario is 20/5/.290 — That’s pretty good for a 2nd baseman when you consider Utley has the conch shell at 30/12/.310.
Nelson Cruz – Damn, Fonzie, you thought I’d say he was a sell after his big time start, huh? Nah, noob. I wrote a whole fantasy baseball sleeper post on this guy two months ago. Recognize!
Adam Lind – Everyone and Grey’s mother seems to like this guy. Okay, I do too! Just keep expectations in check. If you can get Krispie or Ludwick for Lind, I’d go for it.
Josh Anderson – With Thames on the DL, Anderson’s going to have some time to steal bases. Your league has to be fairly deep for his name to matter, i.e., I picked him up in my 16 team mixed league… Then dropped him for Hawkins. Well, nevermind that.
Tommy Hanson – Looks like he’s going to get the call soon. Don’t drop anyone that is currently helping you, but if you’re choosing between middle reliever schmohawk door number one or Hanson, I’d go for Hanson.
Phil Hughes – Is it Phil or Phillip? He’s still very young with tremendous potential. He’s not just on your radar because he’s a Yankee. With Wang wrong, Hughes could be up any moment now.
Derek Holland – Could be an impact pitcher right now. He’s contending with Millwood, McCarthy, Padilla, Harrison and Scott Feldman. (Yes, that last name sounds like Skippy from Family Ties’s real name.) In 12 team leagues or deeper, I’d pay to find out how long until Holland’s inserted into the rotation.
Josh Johnson – Going with the just-abandoned Josh theme, if Johnson avoids injury, he can be this good all year.
Mike Lowell – No, I’m not saying he’s going to keep up a pace of 150 RBIs, but you can’t sell him and get value so you may as well keep him and have a decent cheap 3rd baseman.
Cameron Maybin – He’s been pretty bad so far, but go watch this. Did you see how close the leftfielder was playing? That’s cuz the leftfielder had no idea the scouting report on Maybin and he said to himself this scrawny guy isn’t hitting the ball over my head. Maybin! (Okay, I’m completely bonkers pushing Maybin as a Buy at this point, but if you’re in a deep league and someone thinks your Melky is going to breakout, I’d get Maybin from them.)
SELL
Geovany Soto – I don’t think you should sell him for a pair of Meat Puppet reunion tour tickets, but while last year is still fresh in people’s minds, you might look to unload Soto. Not only is he struggling, but he might be struggling because of shoulder problems. That spells trouble.
Jason Bartlett – Besides having a name that sounds like a jobber in the WWE, he’s having himself a nice little start for the year. .373 with 5 steals. Well, la di da. He’s going to hit .280 and steal 20 bases. If you can get anything for him, go for it. Otherwise, just ride out his hot streak for now, but keep your mind open to other MIs.
Jarrod Washburn – Wanna know what it’ll feel like if you continue to hold him? Punch yourself in the stomach.
Emilio Bonifacio – 2 walks in 66 ABs. He has speed, guys. There’s no doubt he can steal. At some point the goose is going to cook his average real unpheasant.
Chris Volstad – He’s running an ERA out there under 3.00 and it should be above 4.00. He will probably be usable this year, so you don’t need to drop him, but you should use caution with him or trade him for a different piece.
Kyle Lohse – Drop the H.

Impatience has sent J.J. Hardy to the waivers already. My SS is Tulo. Should I drop Burrell for J.J. Hardy and see what happens with having both (I would have Holliday, Granderson, Bruce, and Dukes for 3 OF spots)? I’m also eyeballing Mike Lowell instead of Hardy, but Longoria is my 3B and Delgado and Adrian Gonzalez fill in the 1B/Util spots. This is my last move for the week, and I’m struggling with the decision, if there should even be one…

Good call on Hughes and Holland. I didn’t know how I felt about Holland, but you’re right. It might be too early for him but if he breaks out I’ll regret not having picked him up.
What’s the ETA on LaPorta?
.360/.429/.640/1.069
7.1% BB rate
8.9% K rate
I know it’s early but he has nothing left to prove.

10-team keeper that counts OBP and Ks as well as the usual. Get Lowell, Fontenot and C Perez and give Cano. Lowell would upgrade Swish at CI, I’m eh on the others. Thoughts?

I’m in the process of making a trade: Liriano for Heath Bell. I get Liriano. Good trade or did I make a mistake? I have 3 other closers: Lindstrom, Qualls, and Capps. Liriano will be added to the staff consisting of Billingsley, Shields, Harden, Meche, Young, Slowey, Scherzer, Kuroda, Davies, and Kershaw. Pretty awesome staff for a 10-team mixed league eh?
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
@Steve: I don’t like it at all. Keep Cano. Melky Cabrera has 4HR this year, all coming at New Yankee Stadium. He went homerless his last 42 games of 2008, last hitting a HR on July 8 before his 2009 start. Keep Cano or sell for more value, especially since he’s playing home games in Coors Field East.

@EricB: Very nice staff. Bell’s a nice closer because he has no competition. You look fine with saves though.
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Also, here’s another question: Who to start next week?
I can pick 2 of these:
Liriano vs TB (Shields)
Slowey vs KC (Ponson)
Davies vs TOR (Burres)
Young at COL (Hammel) & at LA (Wolf)
Kershaw vs SD (Peavy)
Scherzer at MIL (Suppan)
I’m leaning towards starting Slowey. Normally I’d start Young too, but I’m worried about homers in Colorado and against the Dodgers.

@Grey:Hill is picking up where he left off before he got dinged, his future is very bright, who cares if he can’t remember his past.
I’ve been wondering what the deal is with Soto,is it too early to cut bait? I hope I’m not looking at a Milton Bradley level guy in return

In a quandry:
Have Mauer (not auto draft, but couldn’t pass up in round 14), but picked up Inge to fill DL spot. No bench spots allowed. Most likely drop would be utility–Bonifacio–but one thing I am lacking is speed. Do I keep Mauer or Inge at C, and do I swap out Bonifacio for the other? Or do I just cut ties with Inge after hopefully getting his best month? (BTW: have a few average drags on team–Krispie, Dukes, Howard, Hardy, Bonifacio). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 12:35 pm

@Endless Summer: Barring an injury, I’d say June at the earliest.
@Steve: Eh, not crazy about it.
@EricB: I’d want Liriano there.
Young, Scherzer
@Doug Ault: I think you have to start looking to sell Soto off while he still has some value from last year.
@Endless Summer: Grab Hughes.
@Bob: Lose Inge when Mauer returns.

April 24th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Would you trade Lind for Holland in a keeper league? (i have lind)
[Reply]
@Frank Rizzo: Just a feeling, but it’ll happen soon and when it does, he’ll be gone very fast off waivers. So you have to know how quickly your league reacts on whether you should grab him now.
@Billy: I’d prefer Maybin.
@Bob: No problem. I wish there was some way to make it so if a username was taken the site told the new person to choose a different one. Anyone know if this is possible?
@Steve: Ha!
@johnson21: Hmm… That’s not an easy call. Has a lot to do with what your outfield is like and just how stacked your pitching is. If it really is stacked, then go for it.
@PJtres: I’d hold Lind.
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
@johnson21: dear god no. I really dislike that trade for you. Napoli is only slightly worse a catcher than VMart (granted they do two very different things for you). Still Bay is better than VMart by a long shot, and I don’t think Abreu’s gonna give you more than a good April (seriously, the guys so fat, how does he get 7 steals? It also belies the fact that his power’s been on the decline). Take Bedard’s resurgance to possible top 10 SP numbers and enjoy it.

[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
hey grey, I have (1250 inning limit) Peavy, King felix, Shields, Wainwright, Slowey, Wandy. My OF is OK (we play 3 OF), Bay, Fowler, Rios, Adam Jones, and Werth. I am in need of steals though and Naps hasn’t been doing it for me.
What do you think? Thanks again!!
[Reply]
@DrEasy: Prefer Dorf.
@johnson21: Yeah, your team is lousy with pitching. Lousy as in good. But your outfield’s kinda hurting. Think you can swing F-Her or Shields for Crawford?
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
@johnson21: Crawford is a good one, so is Victorino, and Ellsbury. I just got Ellsbury pretty cheap so I’m feeling good about my SB’s now. Those 3 OF’s are starting pretty cold so it’s a good time to jump on them. Their owners may be sick of them already based on how high they had to draft them.
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Thanks Dr. Grey. This is a 12 team league so I got pretty good with my pitching. Smoltz is also on my DL. I tried to swing shields for crawford but that got vetoed, the league stating that since crawford was a 3rd round pick, he should get dealt for similar value or whatever. Shields was my ninth rounder, but I do feel they will bring similar value. The leagues crazy I tell you. and jealous.
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
@Grey: thanks, Grey!
But I forgot to mention that the Dorf is going against Peavy…
Should I just forget about both Pelfrey and Dorf, and get Holland or Hughes? The only reason I’m streaming is because my SP roster is pretty shallow (Joba, AJ Burnett, Big Unit, Zimmermann, Masterson, Penny, Guthrie), and our league doesn’t have a max innings limit (or it’s rather high, same diff).
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
@Frank Rizzo: Thanks Rizzo. The dude is sticking to Ellsbury, and the other owner is sticking with the flyin hawaiin. Crawford is available in a trade, but the league won’t allow such things. (crawford for shields).
[Reply]
April 24th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
To add to my previous post, I’m planning to pick up Holland after my two streams, but of course the danger is that someone else will pick him in the meantime. This is a 16 team league.

@DrEasy: Grab Holland and hold for a few. Forget Goofus and Gallant.
@johnson21: That’s BS that they vetoed it.

[Reply]
@vinko: Thanks for the daiquiri! Drop Fowler, if he’s not playing on your team. Gomez is redundant.
@johnson21: Hmm… Another tough call. You don’t have a DL spot? If you do, put him on the DL and hold Street. Otherwise, I think we see Street as a closer before Ryan again.

No no I know you didn’t mean today he would get the call. I just keep reading everywhere that the Braves want to extend his call up to around June or after the break.
I’m in the driver’s seat as my last 2 picks this year were Jordan Zimmerman and Tommy Hanson. So I’m happier than a pig in crap. I’m just waiting for Hanson to get the call and Carpenter to come back so I can stabalize my rotation. Hopefully Zimmer keeps pitching well.

Maybe in leagues with 45 man rosters or NL-only, I suppose. Good article, otherwise, although it’s going to be real tough to “buy” on a lot of those guys, and other than Jason Bartlett, real tough to “sell” on that other group. More like “drop.”

Is Verlander a sell at this point or must I suffer two years in a row? I’m tempted to just drop him and move on forever. I’m not sure I can take another one of these… 7.1IP, 8ER, 5BB, 4SO (fyi, i made that line up, it didn’t actually happen) And I saw the meat puppets this year. I would definately trade Verlander for meat puppets tickets.

Sos, Verlander (according to MLB gamechannel) is hitting 95-97. His strand rate is insanely bad, meaning his luck has been horrible. I still think he has a 3.75-4.0 WHIP and about .8 Ks an inning if he stays healthy all year.
[Reply]
@Sos: I asked people to not even draft him this year. To be fair, I don’t think Verlander will be as bad as he has been, but I don’t think you should expect much better than a 4 ERA and 5 Ks per start.

Here in NZ we got the Yankee/Detroit game at the end of ’07, when as a spring call up he faced Clemens, and won a small victory . Most of last year in the Minors , made good contact in a Spring call up for the fish but to date he seems well out of his depth , I hate to say it but could he be quadruple A.

Does Phil Hughes’s effectiveness Tues (assuming he fills Wang’s spot) have any effect on his value going forward? I wouldn’t start Hughes vs Det, anyway. And I’m guessing the Yanks have got to trot Wang out there at some point in the next couple of weeks (or not?) just to see if he’s righted, in which case Hughes is bumped from the rotation again. @d2bnz: Definitely not a Quadruple A guy. At least way too early to peg him that. He’s got a rare combination of speed and pop and he’s young. All about the upside. I’m not saying grab him over Quentin, but instead of Cody Ross, yeah.
@GhostfacePrzybilla: As I said in the post, if it’s between random MR or Hughes, I’d take a flier. He may only get a start or two… Or he may get a start or two, do well and get more.
@Martin: Pena
@Prince: Scutaro
*******Soria –
An MRI on Thursday came back clean, so the Royals are not currently planning on putting him on the DL. “There is no structural damage,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He’s on special medication, and he’s doing some exercises.” Hillman said that he’ll use a committee to close out games while Soria is out. Expect Juan Cruz and Kyle Farnsworth to get the first opportunities at handling the ninth inning.

@ Grey… I’m in 12 team 7×7 league where the extra categories are: SLG, OBP & K/9, K/BB. The team looks like this: Napoli, Fielder, Utley, Reynolds, Al Ram, Abreu, Markakis, Maybin, Thome, Burrell……. Haren, Oswalt, Jar-jar, Weaver, Qualls, Franklin, Putz and Carpenter, Webb on the DL. I’m having an awful start to the season going 1-26-1…
I really feel like I have to make a move because I am getting killed in every category… There really isn’t anyone that’s a free agent worth picking up. Should I hold onto my guys or try to make a big splash for someone? I think I need another superstar outfielder but I don’t want to give up Utley for one.
Who on this list do you think I should buy low or at least for a decent price? BJ Upton, Holliday, Ichiro, Maggs, Hamilton? Or would you have someone else in mind?

@Tony Y: You won’t regret Suzuki for long. Sure, grab Salty.
Lose Spills for him.
@Matt: I think it’s giving up too much for Youk.
@danimal35: Guess so, but I wouldn’t want Galarraga on my team for any starts.
@Maximus: I feel like you’re a new reader, cause I don’t like 4 of the five names you offered. If I were you, I’d take Webb, at the first sign of very good news — say his return from injury — and I’d trade him for the best piece you can get. Try Upton, Quentin, etc. If those big outfielders don’t work, then try and get a combo of lower tiered outfielders. Hawpe plus Dukes is one example, not the only one.
[Reply]
April 25th, 2009 at 8:17 am
@Sabs: Trust me, you definitely won’t be fitting Razzball time in that often as a 1L. You can probably sneak a few minutes during lectures. Now the second and third years are entirely different matters. Get past the first year and you’re looking at all Razzball, all the time.
Good luck with law school. You know its not too late to change your mind, right? Once the debt starts piling up you wont have that luxury.

Kawakami
Jimenez
A.Sanchez
Parra
Sonnanstine

Arroyo

My hitters are:
C Kurt Suzuki
C Chris Iannetta
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Brandon Phillips
3B David Wright
SS Rafael Furcal
MI Elvis Andrus (I could plug in Jose Lopez too)
CI Aramis Ramirez
OF Alfonso Soriano
OF Matt Kemp
OF Elijah Dukes
OF Carlos Lee
OF Hunter Pence
U Garrett Atkins
With that lineup I’m near the bottom in batting. last place in batting average. near the bottom in RBIs and runs. in the middle in SBs. In the middle in HRs. First overall only because the pitching is dominating. What can be done to fix this? On paper, my lineup looks better than anyone else’s out there. In the standings I’m falling far behind though.

Looking for a temp. fill in with McCann going on the DL:
Paulino
Hundley
Torrealba
Ross
Olivo
Jaramillo
-nothing good on the wire really (only Laird and Snyder on waivers that I see with regular playing time and some consideration for a 12 team 2 catcher league – but can’t see using my number 1 waiver claim on getting one of them – or should I consider it, given what’s out there?)
-better to just stream in catchers with matchups and survive for now?
-anyone you like out there on list or otherwise? Thanks.
[Reply]
@BabyBeluga: I grabbed Ross in one league and Hundley in another. Ross has some pop and shouldn’t kill you on average since he probably won’t have that long in there. Hundley’s playing above his head right now, not sure how long it lasts but could last until McCann comes back. If you need power, Ross… If you worried about your average, Hundley.

[Reply]
@BigFatHippo: Yeah, Coffey, Hawkins and Nunez all bit me in just about every league.
It’s really insane how badly the Angels are scuffling for runs and they bring up Wood to bench him. Hud’s talking about how he should get ABs. Hud’s about the worst announcer in the majors and for him to point out Wood should get in there is egregious.
[Reply]
@Martin: I’d start Zimmermann and Parra.

Angels are losing 9-4, Scioscia thinks they need more situational hitting and OBP.
What The!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brandon Wood languishes on your bench, play the kid already! Exasperating!
[Reply]
@BigFatHippo: Us talking about them was all they needed!
Wood really must’ve pissed off someone on that coaching staff, because the Angels never care about OBP (outside of Abreu which is a new addition). There’s no sense to playing Figgins over him. I guarantee if Wood was a slap hitter that had nothing but speed he’d be playing right now. They’ve given Morales so much rope yet Wood gets none. Very weird.

@grey- well pettite plays at 8 so i can see where i stand before starting him

April 25th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
@Grey: Somebody who’s an angel fan mentioned in the comments that Scioscia doesn’t like him, can’t remember who.
Then trade him dammit, he’s done all he can do at AAA.
I predict Mike gets fired after this year, maybe during.
[Reply]
@BigFatHippo: Scioscia’s been successful there, more or less. Don’t think he gets canned. Especially not with the Adenhart tragedy. Would be a bad PR move. Wood may end traded like Kotchman. The Angels seemed like they had a lot of talent in the minors two years ago and they’re letting it all flounder.

Hutton is usually good about acknowledging how he did play in the majors but he was by no means a star. I hate pitching. My starting rotation is…
Webb (DL…now out at least 6 more weeks…YAY!)
Beckett (I think I just threw up a little)
Gallardo (a ray of light in an otherwise dark place)
Carpenter (DL…out for probably 4-6 more weeks…YAY!)
Lilly
R. Johnson (old man river looked, well, old last night)
and the fillins for the hurt guys…
J. Zimmerman (I’m letting him start today…good or bad idea?)
Hughes (will he stick?)
I really, really hate pitching. That staff looked really good coming out of the draft. Too bad Webb didn’t tell anyone about his crappy shoulder.
On Hughes, will he stick in the Yankees rotation? If so, who gets bumped? I hope it isn’t Joba, since I kept him for 2 years in my keeper league (this year and next).

Maybve the Mets sweep the Nats today, and Florida can start the Mets on their own losing streak after a Nats sweep. Don’t mess with Natstown!

Pitching I have Peavy & Beckett as starters, Jenks & R Franklin as relivers and than in my 3 pitcher spots I have a choice of Bills, Wainwright, Bedard, Slowey, Downs & Hanrahan…or I can drop Slowey and get Hoffmann off the DL & back starting….or just leave him in the DL

I’m on a bit of a posting binge here, but I’ve got these questions:
12 team, mixed, vanilla, 5 bench:
My closers: Lidge, Bell, Qualls, Franklin – need pitching
- would you trade H.Bell for J.Sheilds? (how stable is Franklin in your opinion? hard to tell I know with LaRussa, but I’m still going to ask
-have an offer now: C.Duncan/Maybin/Shields FOR Qualls/Adam Jones
-How real is what Adam Jones is doing? I was very high on him and have him on all my teams – so far I look like a genius – but he might be the right chip to use to get a starter (what type would he be worth?).
thanks again.

I dont have an innings requirement but do you think starting Jurrjens against the Cardinals is risky. Jair is pitching outstanding but the Cardinals have the strongest offense in the mlb so far with 6.2 runs per game and they allow the 2nd least K’s with 97. Its tempting to play Jair with the way he’s playing but I dont want to start him on a day he could possibly blow up for 5+ earned runs..whats your thoughts?

Someone just offered me Dexter Fowler for Rick Porcello in a 20 team league. My outfielders are Ethier, Markakis, Dukes, Cust and Church and Rasmus on the bench. My starters are Greinke, Billingsley, Shields, Cain, Volstad and Porcello. Both have cool names. Both are youngilicious. I don’t particularly need Fowler but I do like those steals and him leading off.

April 26th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
@Grey: Yeah Shields is an option for Abreu, but who are some other pitchers who would be a fair trade for Abreu or T Hunter? I need someone real solid for for my 4th starting pitcher with Beckett, Peavy & Bills ahead of them… I can’t see trading BJ Upton at this time since he is not doing well while Ibanez & Pence are not top picks. It would have to be Abreu who is a top pick & doing well or T Hunter considering his hot streak.

@Steve: Count on it dude, he’s feeling it. The last game was a 1-0 loss, that’s not gonna happen again.
@Robert: Hold Liriano, Kaz, Vazquez, Meche, deal the others if you can. Your closers are fine but you need more than 3 in a 10 team.
[Reply]
@RT: I like Shoppach at catcher.
@Steve: I’d hold Hawkins for now.
@Nick: Hunter or Abreu for Wainwright or Shields, etc?
@Robert: Liriano’s bad luck. Meche’s isn’t worth it in a ten team league, Garza and Bake aren’t due for a comeback according to me, but someone might give you something in a trade for them and the others are fine.
@Tom: Must be a deep league. Yeah, I like that trade for you. Yeah, that’s decent for Votto.

@Grey: Grey you were 2 for 2 on the whole starting Peralta vs Alexei match ups. If I were to try and trade Peralta for an SP, is he able to get anyone of value?
[Reply]
@Bob: Get MG.
@BKK: He should get you a 2 to 3 starter — Think Wainwright or Kershaw.
[Reply]
April 26th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
@BKK: Yea. a QS is a QS. But I doubt I’ll be buying a ticket for that wild ride in the near future. Or maybe I just gotta get a lil’ ice in them veins. All said, I finally had my first good pitching day (that wasn’t spoiled by Mr B implosions), and I instantly jumped 10 points. Yeah…
[Reply]
April 26th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
@BKK: @Grey: I respectfully disagree. Peralta has the skills to be worth a 2 or 3 but I don’t think *I* could flip him for that talent. If you can do it, by all means make it happen. If you are in a deeper league or have a manager needing help at SS/MI go for it. At the same time ‘m wincing at Kershaw. If you can flip HJonny (remember, the H is silent) for Wainwright its a fair move.
To be succinct , look at a 2/3 or as your ceiling but if you have to settle for less don’t forget who told you so.

April 26th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

@BKK: I’m with you on Kershaw, definitely buying into him at least so far. If you have him I think he’s worth trading to people that are waiting for the “proper” correction. He might be legitimate down the road, or even this season, but his ERA will probably end up at 3.74. Note the 4.
