2nd Half Sleepers, Fantasy Roundtable
Rudy’s off on some far away exotic island (Manhattan) and asked me to wave my wand on the fantasy baseball roundtable. This week it’s hosted by Patrick Cain of the Albany Times Union. (I think the sun only comes in from the west in Albany, hence his eyeblack under only one eye.) This week’s question:
Second Half Sleepers that should be available in more than 50% of mixed leagues. Here’s the answers.

i know,huff,he has 3 rbi today so lets hope so
@AL KOHOLIC: He’s long overdue.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:59 am
But isn’t Adam Laroche no longer an everyday player?
@Eric C.: I wrote my answers last week right after the trade. I probably wouldn’t have put him on there this week, but he’s worth playing when he’s starting. You would need to platoon him.
July 30th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
I’m so close to dumping Cueto. I’ve tried to trade him, no takers (maybe high asking price). Can he at least be ok and not terrible?
July 30th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I have now added Nick Punto in all formats.
All due respect, but was the first guy sending his answer from a time machine stuck three weeks in the past? Garrett Jones… hmmmm… I’ll have to check that guy out…
July 30th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Preliminary report sending Sherrill to Dodgers. Baez worth a speculative pickup (Johnson is already rostered)???
July 30th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Looks like Sherril may be a Dodger soon, nothing confirmed http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/many-teams-pursuing-sherrill.html
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Hehe
@I’m Keith Hernandez: Go for it.
July 30th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
On an unrelated note… Our league has decided to go Auction next year.
One problem is that it’s a keeper league and we need to find a way to set $ value on the keepers we will carry into next year.
We will be discounting what ever the $ figures are but the problem is finding full MLB $ values from pre-season 2009. I have found lots of AL only or NL only but can’t find Full MLB ones. Other than Rotoauthority… and that would involve me hipping my dufus league mates to one of my favorite fantasy sites. (on a related unrealted note; you can’t imagine how often I read funny stuff on Razzball and want to tell them about it but can’t as I don’t want to let them in on the brilliant advice. I’m terrified to even use the term “SAGNOF” as they might google it. I guess that is not really the viral marketing you are after, huh?)
Anyone got good list of preseason full MLB dollar values? Preferably from a crappy fantasy advice site?
July 30th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Trade Advice:
Kinsler,Upton, Matt Kemp, Broxton for Longoria, Vasquez, Hill, Cruz
Which Side Wins?
@jamesllegade: Sorry, no idea.
@Corey: Kemp side, but it’s close and fair.
July 30th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
I like the Longoria side because of Vasquez, but the Kinsler side is heavy on SB. It’s power+SP vs SB+SV, as I see it
July 30th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Sherrill to Dodgers for Josh Bell and Steve Johnson.
http://trades.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/07/dodgers_acquire_sherrill.html
July 30th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
@Lava: kinsler/upton (which one?)/kemp aren’t exactly lacking in power though. and all 3 could give you 30 SBs.
@bobbo: Thanks for the heads up!
July 30th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
@Grey: No problem… Jim Johnson is taken in my league, grab Baez?
July 30th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
@ThePoonTycoon: True, and that’s why they’re both pretty fair. I guess it all comes down to whether they need the SB’s, or pitching stats, as Vasquez will give pretty much everything.
I’ve owned Vasquez in two leagues this year, though, so I’m a little biased towards how awesome he has been.
@bobbo: Go for it.
July 30th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Should Bay ride the bench for a day or two? Nothing but Ks lately.
July 30th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
One Pitcher – One Hitter recommendation please…If in need of saves, would you drop an arm swelling Liriano for J. Johnson? And IF Huff is ready to commence his routine second half surge, do you think that Cantu might be on the “off again” portion of his career schedule and he should be dealt for Aubrey? Thanks!
@Robert: I’d never bench him.
@zombie: Go with Johnson. Go with Huff.
July 30th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
@jamesllegade: haha, I don’t call players schmohawks in my league because I don’t want leaguemates to google the term. I do say “sonovabench”, tho, so I probably have already tipped off a couple diligent googlers.
July 30th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Dump Lannan for Cecil?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
J. Johnson or Capps?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
cubs get grabow and gordzelani
@GTS: If you like, it’s a coin flip.
@GTS: Capps
@AL KOHOLIC: Thanks for the heads up!
July 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: Any idea who the Cubs parted with?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Freakin’ Breslow giving up a dinger to Mr. Big PEDS Papi… thats why you don’t take Wuertz out (yay for my middle reliever ERA blowing up again).
July 30th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
@Grey: Thanks Grey
July 30th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Who is the add in San Diego for saves if Bell gets traded?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
@royce!: not said yet so obviously ,nobody
July 30th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
gregerson@anon:
July 30th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
@anon: Grey says Bergerson. I like Mike Adams better, if only because he’s a veteran with some closing experience, and he’s been pitching the 8th of late.
I’ve been wrong before, though. Many, many times.
However, with Sherrill traded, hopefully my Jim Johnson gets bumped up to Junky Closer status.
Now we just need Scott Downs and Bell to get swapped. Come on, sellers!
July 30th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Josh Bell and Steve Johnson for Sherrill is a pretty nice deal for the Orioles. Seems they will continue to make a mockery of the Mariners for years to come. In other news, Bedard nixes the pen session because of lingering soreness. Mariners fans are feeling more than lingering soreness. In the butt.
July 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Grey, I need to make up innings in my points league, and the following pitchers are on waivers: Shields, S. Baker, Duchscherer, Wolf. I have Hamels, C. Lee, Oswalt, Lilly, Dempster, Latos, and Volquez. I also have Matt Thornton using a P spot in my starting lineup, and Miguel Olivo as a backup catcher that I can drop. Should I pursue any combination of the aforementioned pitchers?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Drop David Price for Joe Blanton?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
@Grey: As a Broxston owner, would you trade Madson for Sherrill?
July 30th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
@jamiesonmj: i know shields hasnt been as good as before but he is still a guy to own
July 30th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Thanks Grey. Dropped Liriano for Johnson & feel better already! Meanwhile… any thoughts on the thusfar worthless Josh Hamilton(been dropped to Kempintheorder without the desired affect!)? Bounceback forthcoming? & if so, in a Keeper League, might David Price and THE Garrett Jones have a prayer at acquiring him? Thanks again.
@jamiesonmj: Drop Olivo for Wolf.
@Scotty: Eh
@Dad: Sure
@zombie: You might get him in that trade. I’d go for him.
@jamiesonmj: I agree with AL. I’d drop Thornton for Shields too.
July 30th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
@Grey: Need saves and had been holding Johnson for a week. Success! Still holding Rauch. Rauch or Gregerson? Or do you think there is someone else worth holding? I could also drop Tillman for Gregerson. What do you think?
July 30th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Jeter or Aramis Ramirez?
@struggler: Drop Tillman for Gregerson for the rest of today, but you might need to lose Gregerson by tomorrow.
@Bob: It’s fair. Depends what you need. I’d take Aramis.
July 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
@Bob: aramis
July 30th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Thanks – I dropped Fowler instead. Didn’t realize how bad he’s been over the past couple of weeks.
July 30th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
as i type :
nomar is pack-pedalling on the david ortiz leak .
one piece of information …. some players , who wanted further drug testing , refused to take the test , hoping that the >5% criteria would be exceeded . “are they among the list of 103 players ? nobody even knows…like i say , the whole thing is a joke … society has bigger problems ”
nomar’s wants to discredit the list , because of the way the information is being leaked.
when asked , should the list then be revealed ? , nomar says “NO , because then you’d have 103 different stories are being talked about all at once .”
ortiz to answer question , next , on nesn channel .
if you’re interested .
July 30th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
@anon: @jamesllegade:
Just noticed this from the comments in the Yahoo closing time deal I usually stay up till 3 am or whenever they post it just so I can be the first(!) to comment, but today I was late:
22. Posted by pianow Thu Jul 30, 2009 10:35 am EDT Report Abuse
The Wladimir Balentien trade wasn’t significant enough to break through Wednesday but I know some of you have asked about it. Razzball sums it up this way: “Wladimir Balentien – Traded to the Reds for bag of buttered popcorn. Confusing on a few levels. The Reds needed an outfielder? The Reds are buyers? I guess Baker just can’t stand the thought of playing Gomes every day.”
With another shoutout from the Yahoo gang the rise of Razzball is inevitable, trying to stop it is like trying to stop the tide from coming in.
July 30th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
jamesllegade, regarding auction values:
http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasybaseball/auction-values
It’s definitely preseason. Reyes is ranked #2.
July 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
I got aybar and furcal at SS. MY closers are capps, broxton, valverde. Should i drop aybar for nascar driver jimmy johnson?
@big o: Nomar was the snitch?
@Martin: Go for it.
July 30th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
gallardo,,glad i stuck with him,jaba looking good to,
July 30th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I have been using Suzuki at the C spot this year, Russel Martin has been dropped and passed waivers today. Should I drop either Liriano or Price and hang onto him? What are your views on Martin and Suzuki for the remainder of the season?
@AL KOHOLIC: Nice
@joe: I’d lose Suzuki for Martin.
July 30th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Wainwright/Sandoval (C-eligible) vs Halladay/Bengie Molina?
July 30th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
@Grey:
i don’t think so ,
but the interview lasted prolly 10 minutes .
before papi came on to say he’d answer more questions , after he investigated and found out more information to give ,
the announcer (orsillo ??) said to his side-kick jim “ed” “that was the longest post-game interview i have ever seen … very unusual” .
sounded like 3 or 4 reporters grilling nomar … getting him to repeat shizz and sound like he was talking in circles .
nomar is still a fan favorite here in boston …. but these guys were not letting him off the hook , so easy .
July 30th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
p.s
orsillo now introducing jim ed as jim “hall of fame” rice .
already , it is sickening .
hope nesn cancels their contracts for next year .
tough to listen to the post=game interviews , with the sound turned off .
@I’m Keith Hernandez: I’d want Halladay’s side.
@big o: Thanks for the info!
July 30th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Should I drop Smoltz to take a flier on Lilly?
@Ant: Sure, if you don’t need a starter for about a month.
EDIT: Word.
July 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Mr. Price (not Vincent) just hit waivers in 14-team L.
Drop Cueto, Harang, Buchholz, Hanson, Liriano? Or sit tight?
Mr. Smoltz, same question.
Thank you very much.
@Ceasar: Drop Liriano for Price.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
@grey: was offered javy vazquez for mclouth and dlr….can use pitching help
He also has verlander and beckett …. DLR has a nice schedule too tho….would you do it anyway, or hold out? Thanks
@matthole: I’d offer just McLouth, or McLouth and dlR for Verlander or Beckett. Or McLouth and someone you don’t need for Javy.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Anyone heard how much time Alexei will miss with the ankle sprain? Which schmo should I pick if I need runs>SB>BA>RBI>>>>>>>>HR?
-Castillo
-Callaspo
-Prado
-Bonafacio
-Frodo
-Schumaker
-Counsell
-Getz
-Ellis
@knighttown: Bonifacio
July 30th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I’m dangling McLouth to get a SP. What SP would approximate McLouth’s equivalent worth?
July 30th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
@Grey: I know the feeling, as Blanton has been staring at me for the last four weeks or so, but I haven’t pulled the trigger on dropping Price for him. Right now I’ve got a healthy lead overall and in Ks and Wins in the roto league, so I’m probably more concerned with maintaining 1st place in ERA and 2nd place in WHIP.
(Pineiro is also available.)
Q: would Sparkakis + Billingsley be too much to give for the Lincecumslinger?
July 30th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
@Grey: He’s inclined to trade beckett for mclouth and dlr, over the other scenarios (vazquez/verlander)….is becketts AL schedule a factor to be wary about or is he still an ace regardless down the stretch?
Thanks
@Shmorgie S. Board: Bills, Gallardo… Maybe Wainwright.
@Scotty: That’s a lot to give.
@matthole: He’s an ace.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Verlander/Ibanez to get Braun in a keeper?
July 30th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Who would you pick up for a spot start tomorrow :
Richmond @ Oak
E. Santana @ Min
?
July 30th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Which Side?
Justin Upton, Adam Lind, Ian Kinsler, Broxton, Smoltz for Longoria, Cruz, Hill, Billingsley, Lowe
July 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
@Grey: I’m thinking Da Big Fra Gu has about 3 more at-bats to stave off the big drop.
@RIP Harry: It’s a bit much, but I’d still take Braun there.
@Vince: Neither? Richmond…
@Corey: Lowe doesn’t make the other side that much more appealing. But it’s fair.
@Steve: Yeah, sounds about right.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
@ Grey: Thanks for the reply! Which side would you prefer? Also, You could sub in Franklin or Howell for broxton
@Corey: I’d take the Broxton side. I don’t mind trying to sell Kinsler, but there’s no reason to do 5 for 5 trades.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
I’m doing a bit of an overhaul. I’d be gaining the broxton side looking to make up ground.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Waiving the white flag for 2009 unfortunately. Is this trade fair value for building my 2010 roster? I give Hanley, sparkakis & laroche (none of which can be kept) I get Hamilton in the 4th rd youkilis in the 9th & wainwright in the 17th. I’m about to accept but figured I’d get a 2nd opinion
July 30th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Blanton, and Duchscherer, Hochevar are on the wire would you drop Harang, Tilman, Romero,or Buccholz for any of these?
July 30th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
would you drop sherrill for johnson?
July 30th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
@arussell1983: yes i would,also pick up baez if you can without dropping anyone needed
July 30th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
@Grey: Da Big Fra-Gone?
July 30th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: I just dropped Lopez to pick up a stream pitcher and then bam! Escobar gets hit on the forearm and leaves the game.
July 30th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
cant grab both, plus its a league with a limited # of moves allowed. i;’d hate to waste a move on johnson and not have him start
July 30th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
@Roger Dorn’s Nemesis: Nice name, and that seems like a solid return with great rounds for each player.
July 30th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
by start i mean close
@Corey: Cool, I’d want the Broxton side.
@Roger Dorn’s Nemesis: Looks decent for you.
@Carl Spackler: I’d drop Buchholz for Blanton.
@arussell1983: Sure
@Steve: Sure
@arussell1983: Then wait a day, but he’s the lead for the job. But you do never know…
July 30th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Grey, at this point in the season I have held 1st place since day 1, many thanks to you! But I got thid gut feeling that I’m slipping and could fall to 2nd soon…At this point, is there anyone on my team you would move ASAP?
C- Napoli
1B- A Gonzalez
2B- Utley
3B- Aramis Ramirez
SS- Alexei Ramirez
OF- Ibanez
OF- Pence
OF- BJ Upton
U- C Pena
BN- T Hunter
BN- Bourn
DL- Reyes
SP- Beckett
SP- Billingsley
RP- Jenks
RP- Franklin
P- Hoffman
P- Wainwright
P- Jurrjens
B- Danks
B- Bedard
B- Wolf
I don’t know what to do at this point. My pitching is pretty solid but hitting is so sporadic it gives me a headache…HRs are up, average is terrible most of the time. SBs are down with Hunter and Reyes down. I have to get through this slump!
July 30th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
@john: damn the luck,if you can grab either of the cabrera`s,kennedy hairston jr for the short term,orlando cabrera has been hot,everth cabrera also and runs when he gets on,hopefully escobar isnt hurt very bad,of course scott hairston(my O.F)GOT HIT 3 GAMES AGO AND SAID HE WOULD ONLY MISS 1 GAME,STILL HASNT PLAYED,as grey would say,in fantasy sports,YOU NEVER KNOW
July 30th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
@Nick: Reyes probably wont run much when he comes back,he`s getting close so maybe trade him and pence or hunter for a power outfielder,i just cant see reyes stealing many bases at all when he gets back
July 30th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Where’s Jenks?
July 30th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
@Grey: @I’m Keith Hernandez: Thanks
July 30th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: Yea, the Xrays were negative..so hopefully he won’t be a big p***y and will play tomorrow because I don’t want to drop him just yet
July 30th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Grey- Do you trust Price vs KC?
July 30th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
@Robert: I definitely do.
@Nick: You just have to stay on hot guys on waivers, but you don’t want to sell any of your guys short. But if you’re down on SBs, why is Bourn on the bench? Bench Pence. Or trade one of them for an upgrade elsewhere.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
@Steve: Re-consider Da Big Fra-gu
? He will slump this weekend but should be good for the next two weeks. He is facing a combined ERA of 3.35 this weekend Atex plus his OPS is -.126 on the road. But, the next two weeks he has 9 out of 12 at home (advantage the higher OPS) with opponent ERA around 4.2. Cust kayin’.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
@Simply Fred: Look for him to tank 3 weeks out AdetAcle.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
@Simply Fred: clarify: OPS at home is .866, road .740, hence -.126.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Grey this actually proves that you are the greatest fantasy baseball writer on the planet. Great job and thanks
July 30th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
@Simply Fred: Food for thought, but one of the league I have him in we only start 3 OFs so I don’t feel like I need to wait on him – assuming he’s even started to slump of course! I’ve already dropped him for Reimold there.
The other league is a bit deeper so there aren’t as many options. Still thinking on that one.
July 31st, 2009 at 12:06 am
manny being clowny out in left field almost cost the dodgers a second straight game .
earlier , in the game in which he did cost the dodgers a win over the cards , (by mis-playing a double in to a triple) , i thought he might get sent to the dl with whip-lash , as his dreds came around to hit him in the face , as he threw to 2nd base .
i laugh .
but it is sad .
August 1st, 2009 at 11:02 am
Brian Matusz is he going to be called up next year or is he two years away and do you think he is a MUST sign in a keeper league Mr Grey
