Since back in June when you abandoned your fantasy baseball team because it was totally sucking and you returned to your cubbyhole of Doritos and Freezer Pops, you’ve longed for this day. As Bob Marley sang, this is your redemption song, mon. Or womon. It’s time again to join some fantasy baseball leagues. Before you close all of your extraneous porn windows and rush to sign-up, let’s explain how these fantasy baseball leagues are going to work. We’re going to have a bunch of leagues and crown a winner from each, then we’re going to crown ONE winner from all of the winners. We will be be crowning the winner by taking each team’s points and multiplying it against a ‘league competitiveness factor.’ If you want to see how it worked last year, go here. So we’re going to fill up as many fantasy leagues as we can for the next couple of weeks. Each fantasy baseball league will be a mixed league, 12 team, Roto, 5×5, 5 OFs, one Middle Infielder, one Corner Infielder, one Utility, 9 pitchers, 20 game eligibility, 180 Games Started. The lineup is also known as: C/1B/2B/SS/3B/CI/MI/5 OF/UTIL/9 P/3 BENCH/1 DL. The fantasy leagues will be played in ESPN and they will be free to join. They are not at Yahoo because they don’t give non-leaguemates the ability to see the leagues.
We’re going to start with five leagues of 12 and see how we do from there. Each league has an organizer. The duties of the organizer will be to accept 11 other people into the league, set it up at ESPN at the most conducive draft time and during the season post pretty pictures of the league standings. Just choose one organizer from the 4 RCLs and contact them (the original RCL is invite-only, which is only fair because these guys have been the most active for the longest time). If we don’t get enough to fill 5 leagues, we’ll fold them together like egg whites and sugar. If we need more than 5 fantasy baseball leagues, then we will expand them like egg whites and a beater. If we need more organizers, then we’ll handle that business in the comments of this post. (The number of spots open will be updated by me as I hear from the organizers.)

Keeper question:
League specs are: 12 team 6X6 roto scoring including QS and Doubles as the extra categories. Each team keeps 5 keepers.
I wanted opinions on who I should keep. My obvious keepers are Ryan Braun, Mark Teix, Jimmy Rollins but then I cant decide between Robinson Cano, BJ Upton, or Nick Markakis for my last two spots. For pitchers I have Hamels, Wainwright, or Billingsley but I tend to shy away from keeping pitchers. Open to all opinions and thanks ahead of time!

Has anybody ever done this style before? Do you like it? If our league adopts it, any suggestions regarding strategy?

@Grey: In the post it might be prudent to put all the exact league settings we will use this year for the new league organizers. I think some of them you can change after league creation if they set it up wrong, but I am not sure if all of them are modifiable once the league is set up.
This should be a interesting test to see how readership has grown. Last year there were 9 RCL leagues. Do I hear 15 this year?

You dont pay within a week before the draft or a certain date, team gets deleted and we’ll fill it with someone who will PAYPAL the money or whatever….

From memory, when you set up a league, you just accept every default espn gives you for setting up a custom or private league. I think the only thing you need to do that’s different is make it viewable to people who aren’t on that league.
If they’re not all set up exactly the same way, Grey and Rudy can’t figure out the standings.

@Grey: You often recommend for us not to worry about drafting old guys/guys coming off career years. However, there does come a point in a draft when it is reasonable to take these guys that don’t have much upside. For example, I’m in a Yahoo League (I’m not sure if you’ve checked out their rankings), and the guys in my league will most likely use Yahoo’s pre-rankings as their cheat sheet. Because of this, I will not land guys like McCutchen (ranked 60 on Yahoo), Span (63), Butler (70) etc. who have high upsides. But then they have guys like Chipper (135), Stephen Drew (163), Rios (144), Alfonso Soriano (115) with low ceilings ranked so low. How do I approach these drafts knowing that in order to get a player with high upside, I’ll most likely have to really reach for him? Is it better to draft a lot of those other guys with low ceilings because I am getting good value on them? What are your thoughts, thanks!
@Steve: you have to change the limit on pitching to 180. and the max teams to 12. other than that i think you’re right.

I basically dont really like doing more than 3. It just gets too much work, annoying, and I end up rooting for every player and rooting against every player.
Clutch for me was getting internet on the cell. HUGE! Being able to change my line up and make transactions wherever whenever… HUGE.

@matthole: Ya man I could do one. I am an art teacher. I have all day. Livin’ the dream. I put the bonds trophy on ebay, i believe thats in my write up about it. It was bid up to $6200.00. The bidder of course was a hacked account. I sent an offer to the next couple high bidders, no responses, who knows man, EBAY is a joke for anyhting like that… I did have over 50K people view my artwork though during that span of 10 days (i put it on the DAY after he hit his magic HR, had it planned for over a year, LOL) It was awesome. It was great watching it, hitting refresh and literally 100′s more were viewing it every 15 minutes.
If you want a trophy for your league I could def’ly do something up, One that you could pass around year to year, or a new one could be made…. just depends how you word it, dont put a year on it and its good for ever, have you seen THE LEAGUE? They had a trophy, very funny show, abotu fantasy football tho….

Won my hometown league last year and didnt pick up a trophy yet. Considering fantasy sports is a billion dollar business, there should be a niche in the market for trophies for the league.

@Grey: Grey, it’s nice to be back. Razzfootball is great, but Baseball is the Bomb. Here on the East Coast we have been getting our butt kicked with serial snow storms. We are dealing with a bad case of Cabin Fever, and the only thing getting me through is the vision of spring, and the thought of opening day for my Metropolitans. I can envision four starters vying for comeback of the year honors, David Wright finding his lost power, Reyes back in form, Jason Bay having an All-Star year, Danny Murphy hitting .330, and even Ollie Perez solving his head problems and winning 15 games. Well, you know, Ya gotta Believe. The only difference this year, is that I won’t draft those suckas. And you taught me that. Using Greysian methods, I am presently in 1st and 2nd place in two Yahoo Basketball leagues, and I never watch a minute of Pro Basketball all year. Thanks in advance for your priceless, although at times arcane, wisdom.

how is the competitiveness factor calculated?
I’m wondering what will happen if the league doesn’t wind up with 12 teams.

@Grey: I was kinda wondering how the competitive factor works too? I mean if one team is scoring SUPER high and another is the same score, what makes the difference? in the overall standings?

@Tony: Here’s how it works. We total up the stats in each of the 10 categories for each league. We determine an average. Each league’s total is divided into that average (this is reverse for ERA/WHIP where lowest is best) So if your league has hit 3% more HRs than the average, your league gets 1.03 for HRs. We then average those ten totals and multiply by 100.
If your league is completely average, your competitive index is 100.
The variations by league are pretty small. Below are the indices for last year:

This is blowing away the five leagues you started with. Should be a very competitive year and I’m glad to play in my first razzball baseball league. @Brian (League 17 organizer): Thanks for the update! If anyone contacts you about the league now that it’s full, please don’t sit on those emails on the chance someone backs out of your league. If you could email the extras back and tell them to go back to the site and look for another league. If someone backs out of your league, will deal with that then.

hey guys, the league is tentatively full. I got about 2 dozen responses in the last 24 hours, so I have not been able to respond to everyone.
I have a guy and 2 friends that committed to 3 spots, but he has not yet responded to me. I have another guy who has not responded. So I think spots will open, but my waiting list is already like 10 deep, so if you emailed me after like 3:00pm yesterday, then its not looking good.

I have had a lot of people ask me if we have to keep the draft pick selection time at 120 seconds. Are we allowed to change this to 90 seconds or do you really want us to keep it at 90?

I have been offered Brad Hawpe and Matt Capps for Manny- Is this a good deal? I could really use a closer but would this make sense? Hawpes stats are more than serviceable and I have plenty of power on my team already and I get 1 of the best closers (really?) going so far. With Manny being just this side of 40 is this the time to let him go? I would miss the Rainman of hitting but it fills a huge hole with Saves that I have. Again- does this make sense?
