2010 Baltimore Orioles Fantasy Baseball Preview
We at Razzball realize that exporting our views across the country has damaging consequences on the blogosphere. To help make amends, we are reaching out to leading team blogs and featuring their locally blogged answers to pressing 2010 fantasy baseball questions regarding their team. We feel this approach will be fresher, more sustainable, and require less energy consumption (for us anyway). The 2010 Orioles Fantasy Baseball Preview comes courtesy of Daniel Moroz of Camden Crazies (don’t fret, NJ and Philly readers – this refers to Camden Yards and not the most dangerous city of 2004, 2005, and 2009 – Camden, NJ)
1) The fantasy baseball expectations of Matt Wieters last year were ridiculous – nothing short of Piazza’s 1993 rookie year (.318/81/35/112) would’ve satisifed them. A year later, expectations are in check and our CHONE/ZiPS-based projection systems have him with a modest line of: .286/55 R /14 HR /63 RBI. Do you think he’ll surpass any of those levels and, if so, by how much?
I think those expectations are pretty spot-on, as I have him projected to hit .287/.351/.455 right now. The RBI and R has a lot to do with where he hits in the batting order, which I’m not sure of. I do think he has a chance to break out, but am not really looking for that to happen for at least another year. Adjusting to hitting major league pitching is hard – especially when one also has to adjust to catching major league pitching
2) The Orioles have a number of starting pitcher prospects. Rank the following in order based on your 2010 expectations: Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken, Brian Matusz, and Chris Tillman.
Matusz, Bergesen, Tillman, Berken. I think Matusz can be an above average starting pitcher already; Bergesen around average; Tillman and Berken more of like 4/5 starters, with the latter maybe seeing some time in the bullpen as well (and the former have the much higher ceiling).
3) Which of the Orioles outfielders will have the best year at the plate: Nick (Sparkakis!) Markakis, Adam Jones, or Nolan Reimold?
Markakis. He’s the only one who I think can hit .300, put up a .380 OBP, and slug close to .500. I don’t think Jones or Reimold will get to any of those marks in 2010 – and especially not all three.
4) Brian Roberts’ SB totals have gone from 50 to 40 to 30 in the past 3 years. Over/under 30 SBs in 2010?
I’ll take under 30, especially since he already has missed some time this spring with back issues. Roberts is getting into his mid 30s, so while he should still be able to steal quite a few bases just based on smart baserunning, I don’t think his speed will stay top notch for that much longer.
5) Since you follow the Orioles, we assume you live in the Baltimore area and, thus, must have watched ‘The Wire’. So, which Wire character does Peter Angelos most remind you of? (personality vs. physical) If you haven’t seen the Wire, please explain yourself.
I do live in Baltimore, and I have seen The Wire, but only the first season (and a couple episodes of the second). It was a good show – and I can definitely tell why people consider it one of the best TV shows of all time – but it just didn’t grab me that strongly. I’m hoping to come back to it at some point. I guess in light of that, I can’t really answer the question well. I think Angelos has finally allowed the baseball people to be in charge, which is for the best.
Rudy: Sheeeeeeeettt, I would’ve thought all Baltimoretonians were required to watch The Wire and all Barry Levinson + Jon Waters movies. The easy answer to “Which ‘The Wire’ character does Peter Angelos most remind you of?” is The Greek from Season 2 as he 1) also owns a big organization, 2) works best when he keeps a low profile and let’s lieutenants take care of the day-to-day and 3) is of Greek descent (Angelos is Greek-American). Alternatives answers include Mayor Clarence Royce (profited off civil service – Angelos made his money in class-action suits – and ran the city into the ground), Police Commissioner Ervin Burrell (misran the Police Department and put too much faith in bad lieutentants like Deputy Rawls), and drug kingpin Avon Barksdale (gets a little too overexcited when someone disrespects him by encroaching on his territory *cough* Washington Senators *cough*)

As a Baltimoron who loved The Wire, all references to Senator Clay Davis are much appreciated. I eagerly await the season’s first Josh Hamilton / Bubbles comparison.

I’m just wondering if it’s better to use my 17th pick overall on Adrian Gonzalez, or wait until pick 80 and grab Carlos Pena or Adam Dunn to man my 1st base. The only difference between Gonzalez and Pena/Dunn is 30 points of BA, so is it really worth it to spend the high pick on someone who offers only 30 avg points more?

@Cheese: Could be 50 points on average. I’d just take A-Gon, but I could see either argument.
@Mikey boy324: Not overly concerned, no.
@Brandon: Take a pitcher and wait.
@johnny o: I want to say Davis, but him and Stewart could kill you. Honestly, not crazy about any of the choices. I’d take Davis and Slowey, but you’re gonna need Polanco at MI. Yeah, I know.

I need help with my final two keepers. We keep 10 and so far i’ve go Laporta, markakis, Reynolds, Werth, Zimmerman, Cahill, nolasco, and Wandy Rodriguez.
The rest I can choose from are Nolan Reimold, Brian Matusz, Zach Duke, Ted Lilly, Drew Stubbs, Johnny Peralta, and brian Duensing
[Reply]
@trevor: Cahill’s going to be terrible. I’d keep Reimold, and Matusz. And change out Cahill with Lilly or Stubbs.

I’m liking the 1-2 punch of Borbon and Andrus today the rangers have going.
And is it me, or are people falling like flies in terms of injury this year? Seems like everyday 1-2 marquee names get hurt. I know every spring season has its injuries, but man, it’s out of hand lately. I think the most concerning one for me is Asdrubal, who has a strained groin and is day-to-day.
Maybe not so much for my Yahoo league, but in ESPN where you need extra infielders, that could be a problem. Especially since Acta did something right for once and put him to bat leadoff where he’s 5 for 10.
About the only guy I’d like to see injured is Jeff Mathis. Even though Napoli has 4 HRs and 7 RBIs so far, Sciosa is unfortunately gonna do the same old song and dance.
Anyone you secretly wanna see get injured to give someone a shot to play Grey? How about you Razzballers?

I loved The Wire. I have watched the first 3 seasons via Netflix and look forward to the rest.
I think one can rationalize Roberts’ decline in sb in 2009 in part because he led MLB in doubles. He ended up on second base over 50 times. Just my 2 cents. As to whether or not his back injury is an issue in 2010, I have no idea, but I would otherwise take the over on 30 thefts.

@malacoda: he had 51 doubles and 8 triples the year before when he stole 40. He had slightly more extra base hits last year because of the homeruns, but, still, not sure if this is enough to make the difference.

@Eddy: how’d they look eddy? you watch it live or?
[Reply]
March 13th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
@Tony:
I didn’t watch it live, but it was good to see them hitting in those slots b/c it’s believed that Andrus will hit 9th, which’ll really diminish his value.
Borbon went 1-4 with 2 runs and 1 SO
Andrus went 1-4 with 1 run and 1 SO
Unfortunately, they left 10 men on base between them (ouch). 4 and 6 respectively.

Re: Brian Roberts & SB
Roberts ran 20% less in 2009 than he did in 2008, and was down closer to 30% from 2007. (in relation to the number of opportunities)
His success rate has dropped as well since 2007.
I think 30 SB is a ceiling at best this year.

Is a bit of a mess, but your team’s really not that bad for a preset. Solid pitching staff for that deep of a league. You have very little speed outside of Stubbs, which isn’t terrible. Better to have power and less speed as you can find it.

@Grey: You mentioned that you liked to fill the cornerstones first. If I get elite 1B at #10 overall would you take zimm at #15 (if arod, wright, longoria are gone) to maintain that strategy. Or would you risk missing out on zimm/youk and maybe getting sandoval, reynolds at rd 3 or have to wait out for beckham/stewart.
Same conversely. If I miss out on elite 1B at #10 overall and take longoria would you force yourself to take adgon at #15 or would you take holliday in rd2 and hope for morneau, reynolds, morales, or dlee later on…..
which rd would you ideally target sanchez as your #6 SP?
Thanks for your insights and patience with similar questions (fine tuning for draft then it will end)
[Reply]
@incognithole: I’d wait longer than the 15th pick. If it’s Sandoval or Reynolds, so be it. Same with 1st base. Sanchez goes anywhere from 180 to 220. Jump on him at 175 and you should be fine.

Grey –
First off, hats off to you guys for this site; I stumbled across it a few weeks ago and have studied it up and down since. Unbelievable content for free.
That said, I wonder if you would mind critiquing the live draft I just had for my league today: 11 teams (one guy dropped out five minutes before go time, argh), 5×5 plus OPS and QS, 4 OF, no CI/MI.
1. (2) Albert Pujols
2. (21) Grady Sizemore
3. (24) Jimmy Rollins
4. (43) Robinson Canó
5. (46) Dan Haren
6. (65) Adam Lind
7. (68) Cole Hamels
8. (87) Gordon Beckham
9. (90) Chad Billingsley
10. (109) Heath Bell
11. (112) Álex Ríos
12. (131) Vladimir Guerrero
13. (134) David Aardsma
14. (153) Miguel Montero
15. (156) Jonathan Sánchez
16. (175) Dexter Fowler
17. (178) Tim Hudson
18. (197) Octavio Dotel
19. (200) Francisco Liriano
20. (219) Joba Chamberlain
21. (222) Koji Uehara
There were couple of unhappy developments – Zimmerman was gone by the middle of the second, and one guy hoarded pitching so I feel like I had to reach for a couple, but overall I feel pretty good about this team. Am I wrong?

Need keeper help, especially since I’ve never done an auction draft before…10 team H2H points league w/ 2 catchers, MI, CI, 5 OF and Util…5 keepers, I’ll list last year’s dollar amount and PPG average
Hanley – $38 (3.6)
Mauer – $9 (3.8)
Longoria – $21 (3.0)
Votto – $9 (3.1)
Kemp – $21 (3.0)
Phillips – $18 (2.9)
Nelly Cruz – $-9? (2.9) Note…how do negative values work?
Mini-Donk – $1 (2.6)
Wieters – $2 (1.7)
Josh Johnson – $10 (16.2)
Wandwagon – $1 (14.4)
Cliff Lee – $21 (14.7)
Ubaldo – $-7? (14.7)
Johan – $32 (15.6)
The draft last year was a snake, so to switch to auction, we’re using ESPN’s values from last season…
Also, some managers want to do away with the points system and do straight up H2H with the 5×5 categories, would this have any impact on who I should keep? I’m thinking it would make Mini-Donk much more attractive, although I already have Longoria at 3B
Sorry if this post makes about as much sense as Joe Torre’s batting order, I wasn’t involved in this league last year and I’m joining in as a co-manager on one of the teams

@mrbaseball:
Wow, what a terrible team that guy drafted. I think he believes people will be begging him to trade in the season – all the king horses and all the kings men can not put that team back together again
but for me its a cool draft since my starting pitching rotation is strong – I have to be in good shape against the other 19 teams

@mrbaseball:
Definitely man. Especially considering the fact that you wern’t there at all, I give you props.
@Grey:
What do you think of this yahoo mock I just did? 12 teams H2H. I wasn’t there the first two rounds, so once again I had to come up with something since I’d never take two straight OF.
1. Ryan Braun (Mil – OF)
2. Matt Holliday (StL – OF)
3. Ryan Zimmerman (Was – 3B)
4. Justin Morneau (Min – 1B)
5. Curtis Granderson (NYY – OF)
6. Jon Lester (Bos – SP)
7. Cole Hamels (Phi – SP)
8. Hunter Pence (Hou – OF)
9. Elvis Andrus (Tex – SS)

The Dodgers have not failed to provide a surprisingly effective middle man over the past couple years (Wade, Park, Kuo, Troncoso, Belisario, etc.)
Anyway, I was noticing Jon Link (from the Pierre trade) is fighting for a rotation spot, and could end up in the bullpen. His 10.5/9 K rate might make him worthy of watching on waivers…

@Grey: J-Upside is crushing the ball, 7-for-19 with three homers already, while holliday tweaked a muscle……still holliday > j-up?
[Reply]
@PJtres: Adams, Lewis…
@Adam: Wouldn’t change much. Couldn’t you keep Reynolds for $1 then get Hanley back for say $45 and have both for $46?
@Eddy: Team looks solid. A little light on speed. Nice bullpen and staff overall.
[Reply]
@incognithole: Yeah, it’s March.
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
@Grey: I’m sure that would work, but under the current point system that counts against K’s, Reynolds isn’t as valuable as usual…he finished tied with the great Adam Kennedy in points per game, and just behind the likes of Cantu, Lowell and Rolen (and David Wright, interestingly…)
Unless I’m overthinking all of this, as well as the fact that I already have Longoria, it seems as if guys like Cruz , Ubaldo, Wandy or Wieters would be better keepers if I was looking for value rather than overall production

@Grey: You don’t like Uehara for WHIP control/vulture saves?
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
@Grey: Also, in the same league, just got offered Zobrist ($1 keeper, 3.1 ppg) for Johan…I know Zo is a better keeper than Johan at this value, but would you keep Zo as one of the 5?
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
@Adam: Could probably also get Jeter ($12, 3.3) if you like him…the scoring system in this league is ridiculous, I’m confused

@AL KOHOLIC: Not everyone’s
[Reply]
@Adam: Ah, yeah, points. Then keep Ubaldo and get back Hanley for the money saved. No, I wouldn’t keep Zo.
@J!m Future: Eh, he’s okay for WHIP. He’s not getting saves unless something dramatic happens in the O’s pen.
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
@Grey: Huh. I thought he was supposed to be their set-up man, since Johnson didn’t exactly inspire confidence in the closer’s role late last season. Would you recommend dropping him for Kuo or Romo, or maybe Rodney (you KNOW he’s gonna get saves at some point, but I feel like I’m gonna need the WHIP help more)?
Thanks for the thumbs up on the roster, though. Most of the credit is due Razzball!

March 14th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
@Grey: Oh, or I could handcuff Mike Adams to Bell.

@J!m Future: Rodney for potential saves, Adams for WHIP help and saves down the road.

Just finished my draft in my 12 team Roto 5×5 (+OBP, +TB, -AVG, -HR) league. Here’s the damage…
Note: I traded away my 2nd (10th round) pick and had 2 picks in the last round as a result.
Note 2: This is a straight draft, no snake action and since I got 2nd place last year I drafted from the 11 hole.
I was thrown off by the fact that Andrus was picked #3 overall after keepers (by the team that kept Rollins?!), then Alcides and Asdrubal in the 3rd (before my 2nd pick), and then EverCab in the 9th by the same team that took Asdrubal (What up Vic are you a fellow Razzer?!?). So I ended up with Alexei in the 10th…
Closers go fast in this league and I think I’ll be a MrB this year, and hope Bell gets traded sooner rather than later
1. (11) Álex Rodríguez (K)
2. (23) Matt Kemp (K)
3. (35) Ryan Howard (K)
4. (47) Zack Greinke (K)
5. (59) Félix Hernández (K)
6. (71) Robinson Canó (K)
7. (83) Shin-Soo Choo (K)
8. (95) Ichiro Suzuki (K)
9. (107) Nelson Cruz
10. (131) Carlos Mármol
11. (143) Geovany Soto
12. (155) Jered Weaver
13. (167) Roy Oswalt
14. (179) Octavio Dotel

18. (227) Mike Adams
19. (239) Michael Wuertz
20. (247) Chris Tillman
21. (251) Cameron Maybin
I probably won’t hold onto Tillman or Maybin long, unless they start strong. Anyone I should target off waivers? Here are a few available prominent names:
HItters: Mad Vlad, Mark DeRosa, Scutaro, Corey Hart, Vernon Wells, Krispy Young, Adam LaRoche, Colby Rasmus, Jhonny Peralta
Pitchers: Randy Wolf, Buehrle, Ervin Santana, Scott Downs, Dice K, D Lowe.
Cheers!

@The Dude: I count low on speed, great on power, fine on OBP, nice on TB, and your pitching is obviously buoyed very well by your top two aces. Overall, it’s a solid team. I love the Oswalt pick and the Weaver pick is good. No issue with Tillman late, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the first guy gone.
@mrbaseball: Correia
@Bill Lumbergh: Depends what you need. LaPorat has the best upside, so if that’s all you’re looking for, there ya go.

I’m looking at your Top 300 rankings and wondering how this would all pan out in an 11-12 team mixed roto league– and here’s the clincher– if I plugged in YOUR 300 and went with AUTO DRAFT. Yeah. Auto. Circumstances beyond my control.
Do you suggest this, or should I stick with Yahoo’s rankings as my auto , assuming most of my competitors will be drafting based on Yahoo’s rankings?. That’s about how it went last year– one after another via Yahoo draft order.
I’m picturing a situation where I end up going with someone like Carlos Quentin (ranked at 54 on Razzball) when Verlander might still be on the board in Yahoo world.
[Reply]
@mc serch: No problem.
@Cold Feet: It’s not going to be that easy, unfortunately. I’d adjust the Yahoo rankings to per mine, but you don’t want to take guys way before others take them. Your Quentin example is the reason.
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
@Grey: So, even though it might get a little ugly at some points, you WOULD recommend going with your rankings and going balls to the wall? I’m game, just trying to figure out how some of these picks may go. I have no problem being the laughing stock the day after the draft, as long as I win.
[Reply]
March 14th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
@Grey: Yeah, my solution for the speed issue was to take one of the 4 SS with high speed upside that got snaked from me. I guess I should have been more aware and snagged EverCab before he was lost. Though there’s a decent chance he’s dumped to waivers or I can trade for Elvis considering their owners were foolish enough to double draft at the SS spot.
Steven Drew was still available when I took Alexei, but I went with “The great 2009 bust” because of his better speed (not Elvis speed, but still).
The good news is, after adding up my starting roster (everyone but Maybin), according to your projections I’ll have ~127 steals. Last season in this league that would have been good enough for 5th in steals, so considering my dominance elsewhere I think that should be enough.
However, for some reason I sense this season is going to be “speedier” than last season, so here’s hoping Ichiro goes all 2008 on me and nabs 40+

Grey,
What do you think Tillman’s future looks like, potential 1-2 down the road? I have him in a huge roster (35 slots) dynasty, and need to cut a couple guys to free up some bench room for draft picks, and he’s one of the guys on the possible list.

@Dave: Yeah, probably a #2, maybe 2011, but probably 2012.
