1. 2B Orelvis Martinez | 23 | MLB | 2024

Power will never be a problem for a 5’11” 200 pound Martinez, whose occasional swing-and-miss issues need to be viewed in the context of playing mostly against older players. He was playing well in 2024 and forced his way into Toronto’s lineup at second base just before getting suspended 80 games for PEDs. He had hit 17 home runs with a 23.8 percent strikeout rate in 74 Triple-A games, but projecting his future is a trickier task now under the PED cloud. I tend to avoid these guys altogether, a strategy I’ve never regretted.

Giants RHP Hayden Birdsong will make his debut for the arm-starved Giants today against the Cubs. He’s pitched well since being selected in the sixth round of the 2022 draft, leaning into a high-velocity fastball to rack up the strikeouts: 75 K’s in 57.1 innings across two levels this year. At 6’4” 215 lbs with that heater playing well atop the zone, he fits the archetype for our times. He may not pitch deep into his starts, but he’s going to try and strike out every single batter with high heat and buried breaking balls as long as he’s out there.
