What up, Razzball Nation!

I’ve been away for a couple weeks touring around Italy. I saw the town where the Baldellis have been contracting mitochondrial diseases for centuries, watched as Pete Incaviglia’s cousin used a vicious uppercut to generate topspin for a winning bocce roll, and took part in a old-fashioned Tommy Lasorda pasta crawl (I did NOT need that last plate of penne arrabiata…)

While away, my fantasy teams were left to fare on their own. One expert league team that just never got into second gear this year got called out by another blogger (what, who knew Joe Torre would hate on Pierre so much?) and my other expert league team fell from 1st to 5th (but I’m still in contention). In fact, all my teams did bad while I was away….which turned out just fine for my Razzball team…

Yes, I’ve snuck ahead of Grey with 3 weeks left to go in the inaugural Razzball season – 94.5 points to 94 (out of 120). Our friendly rival Mike from the FB Generals is still in the running at 88 points and the rest of the crew are poised to be spoilers as most of the categories are still very close.

How close is this battle? If Grey had one less run (or I had one more), he’d be in first. Crazy. And the points I’ve gained in ERA/WHIP by inching up to 4.89/1.49 can disappear with a quality start or two.

Stay tuned…

  1. wassup says:

sorry didnt see the most recent post
padilla against the a’s tommorow whos he already beat twice this season. Is he a better streamer then Scherzer, Marquis, Cueto, Campillo who u listed above?

  2. p0rk burn says:

Rudy/Grey: I’m pulling for Razzball to win and to show. Picking the worst players is dispositive proof of your skills at picking the best, right?

  3. Grey

    Grey says:

@wassup: No, I wouldn’t put Padilla above them.

@p0rk burn: And you know that.

  4. wassup says:

Final day of second round and I have 5 possible starters but only 4 available sp slots. I could also bench one of my closers and get all 5 starters in. My possible starting pitchers today are Danks, Santana, Scherzer, Padilla, and Zambrano.

    H2H matchup for the week:
    W: up 6-5
S: 3-2 (not really worried, he only has Fuentes & Woold)
    K: im down on K’s 51-63
    ERA: up 3.43-3.79
    WHIP: up 1.2- 1.33

Overall its 8-2 because im winning every batting category besides sb. Im just trying to make sure I dont blow this lead. Since I’m up on the ratios I’m leaning towards not starting Zambrano because im not going to start him until he proves nething. Your thoughts? thanks in advance

  5. wassup says:

    BTW its Ervin Santana above

  6. Grey

    Grey says:

@wassup: Zambrano’s not pitching today. According to the Cubs, Marquis is.

Also I wouldn’t start Danks or Padilla.

  7. wassup says:

@grey: must be one of those yahoo! errors because this morning I was wondering why Zambrano had a little arrow thing that meant he would start

  8. p0rk burn says:

Grey – I picked up Scherzer last night just in case. Start him against Cinci to try to counter Myers?

I have 3 wins to his 2, 1 loss to his 2, 2 homeruns allowed to his 3, 5 walks issued to his 8, 23 Ks to his 19, ERA is 3.12 to his 5.76, 1.00 WHIP to his 1.40.

    Tied 9-9.

  9. SoS says:

So much baseball on today, I think my head is going to explode

  10. p0rk burn says:

    @Grey: Then its unanimous.

  11. Grey

    Grey says:

@p0rk burn: I’m hoping this works out for you. You need this!

  12. Nick says:

@Grey: Starting E. Santana tonight…do you start Zambrano against Houston or is that too risky? IP is at -5.1…really tight race in WHIP and Wins & far away in K’s & ERA

  13. Nick says:

@Grey: Also what’s up with Ethier? Second day benched…

  14. Steve says:

@Grey: It’s not much consolation but I never gave even a second’s thought to starting Markakis today…

  15. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Nick: No, I don’t start Zambrano.

Ethier’s wife’s having a baby. He might be out a few days.

@Steve: Yeah, I can understand that.

  16. Freak says:

@Grey: Stupid y? not putting that in ethier’s news bulletin.

Would have played the flying hawaiian.

  17. Grey

    Grey says:

@Freak: It was mentioned a few times in the comments on this site yesterday, but I guess you missed it.

  18. knighttown says:

They show Ayala as having a 27,000 ERA and a 3,000 WHIP on TSN. I’m glad I benched him as that can’t help a guys ratios.

  19. Grey

    Grey says:

@knighttown: Not a bad line, if you have Beerer Goggles.

  20. BSA says:

Hey I carried this from the Ethier post – thought you wanted Razzball posts to have Razzball comments but I guess it was the hall of fame posts. Anyway, to help you streamline and not click around.

@Grey: C’est La Vie. With the way McLouth has heated up and the number of games next week I may ride Markakis, Grandy, McLouth in the outfield with Werth in utility. Grandy was icey this week so a shortened week of Ethier may be better. Opinion?

As to SP next week I was thinking of riding Billingsley, Liriano, Myers, Ohlendorf, Shields, and Volstad with Broxton closing over Fuentes.
On the bench I have Wainwright. Any under the radar two starters to look for?

  21. BSA says:

Also, nice/intersting line tonight so far for Myers. Cueto had a few of these nights where he seemed to be pitching to contact rather than strikeouts.

  22. BigFatHippo says:

@BSA: Drunken football party in the Hippo household, what happened in baseball?

    Other than Halladay losing?

  23. BSA says:

@BigFatHippo: I’m jealous as I sit here writing a paper. Who’s your team? My boys came through while bitch slapping Mangina AGAIN!
How about Lester? It’ll be interesting to see where I draft him next year.
Myers looks like a CG and Werth was definitely worth picking up this week asI played him and sat Atkins this week.
Grandy went 0-7 while Markakis and Wright both hit 2 HRS.

Oh well, drink one for me, I have to get back to the work that gets me a bonus and some more credibilty.

  24. BigFatHippo says:

@BSA: All work and no play makes summerdog a dull boy. Ask Jack Torrance, he’ll tell ya.

Everybody gone, which leaves Hippo in a drunken stupor watching the late game. Boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a Bronco fan, for life. Crazy game today. So you’re a Pats fan too huh? Bummer on Brady, don’t think Cassel can handle the job, sucks for Moss who I have on my money team.

  25. BSA says:

Eh, Cassell will do fine. My thought is that he will land somewhere between Golden Boy Brady and mediocre – that is still pretty good. Belicheck ain’t stupid, obnxious and stubborn, but not stupid.

Alright – now I am switching over activities for the next twenty minutes or so.

As to everyone gone for the night I just made a similar comment in my weekly H2H league where it is the playoffs and not one comment.

  26. p0rk burn says:

Stupid Brett Myers. My only consolation is that I would have lost even if I had started Shields and JJ yesterday. Hard to do anything when your offense craps the bed. I would have had a shot if Alfonso hadn’t been rained out. Eff you Ike!

  27. Grey

    Grey says:

@BSA: Ethier’s set to return to the team on Monday, so you should be all right there. I have no idea who’s available as far as two starts go, but Kuroda, Slowey, Morrow, Aceves, Pedro, Lannan, in that order, are possibilities. I wouldn’t touch Ohlendorf, if I were you.

@p0rk burn: So you lost? That’s it?

  28. SoS says:

Actual conversation with my future brother in law today about his team…Dan- “Should I start big Z tonight? I’m up in whip, and down in all other pitching categories. It can really only hurt me to start him, right?” Me-“Seriously, you have to bench him. It’s not like he’s gonna throw a no hitter or anything. Thats really the only way it would be worth it.” Lucky for him, it all worked out since his opponent had Berkman, but it was kind of crazy watchin the zeros pop up on the box. Anyone wanna have the same conversation with me about slowey tomorrow round dinner time?

  29. Junker23 says:

Just wondering – Any of you guys have HACKING MASS teams on Baseball Prospectus? I just checked that again today and was shocked to see where I am in the standings. Apparently I’m the man at picking shitty players, I never even knew.

  30. wassup says:

F Word I should of started Zambrano. My instincts said dont start him against Houston and he goes out and gets a no hitter after hes been horendous for a month

  31. wassup says:

Im still watching highlights of Chargers-Broncos game after I watched it live!! The whole game was a highlight reel and it will prob be top 5 games for this year

  32. Grey

    Grey says:

@SoS: Did you guys happen to talk about Radhames Liz too?

    @Junker23: Nice work.

@wassup: Yeah, no one could’ve predicted that. Except SoS sorta.

  33. SoS says:

@Grey: Trust me, that was no prediction. I guess blind squirrels do find acorns every once in awhile.

  34. p0rk burn says:

@Grey: Yeah, I’ll be stuck playing for 3rd in that league. Its funny because I did a friend a favor and drafted his team for him and he ended up being the team I faced in the semis. He did make a shitload of moves in the regular season so I can only claim 7 out of the 23 players on his roster. I should have 3rd locked up no problem, now I can “focus” on the RCL.
