It doesn’t get much deeper than this, does it? That’s what she said! Not everything in a deep league setting is fun. Like hiring a convict to babysit your child, sometimes you just gotta take a guy who’s available and hope for the best as it can be completely soul-wrenching to reach for guys because of their position and be left with little to nothing in return in these types of setups. When you play in a deep league like I do – two at every infield position plus two UTIL and five outfield – you have to let your mind wander beyond the sexy picks and be willing to drunkenly amble back to your apartment with that tall, muscular chick who beat you at arm wrestling while setting a pub record for hot wing plates eaten and really hope she doesn’t have an Adam’s apple. The best part about playing the Crying Game? Not much crying involved because these guys go so deep, so deep if they put your team to sleep you can drop them. And now that I’ve thoroughly depressed you even further than the title could even take you, let’s get down to business. So here’s Matt Dominguez in all his glory and what he can do for your deep league team for the 2014 Fantasy Baseball season…
So, where should we start? How ’bout the beginning you say? Yes, lets. In the beginning, Dominguez created the statline of 30/11/45/.227 and there was emptiness and darkness for his owners. He produced that line over an 88 game stretch which if we translate to a full 162 game season, you get a 55/20/83 line with a putrid average…hrm, let’s start from the end instead, shall we? Over his final 64 games, Matt gave us a 26/10/32/.260 line which if we prorate over a 162 game spread we get 65/25/81 line. Sure, the improvement was slight but the .227 to .260 average is pretty big. All this to say, his ending line from 2013 is definitely repeatable without need for huge improvements. Not in love with that idea, I know. But here’s something you might want to know: I once tore a tag off a mattress in a mattress store. Yup. Did it right in front of the store owner and said ‘Go ahead, ese! Call the pigs on me!’ Straight up G stuff right there…oh, that’s not what we wanted to discuss though. What I wanted to say was he finished as the 18th best 3B last year according to Grey’s year end Top 20 3rd Baseman from the 2013 Fantasy Baseball season. Now as it stands, I haven’t seen Grey’s or anyone else’s 3B rankings for the 2014 season but I can tell you this: Dominguez has no reason to go at a high price or even near where he ended the year last season. Like we discussed in the opening, sexiness is so important when people are drafting and no one sees the upside in Matt. Which is understandable but for one simple reason: the kid doesn’t even turn 25 until August. Yup, he’s younger than guys like Will Middlebrooks and Mike Moustakas, has a steadier job heading into 2014 than either of those guys do and had a better season than either. But both of those guys will go higher in drafts. Why? Because Astros. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Now with that you’ll have to pardon me as I run to the store. Gotta buy more razors after Glen(da) used them all shaving her face and arms this morning. Peace!
