Listen up here, boys and six girl readers, this is your first foray into 2027 fantasy baseball, so you might want to sit yourself down before you catch a cold. In 2027, Imma be talking like a southern star of yesteryear so you best get used to it, ya hear? You betta, ya heard? If you ain’t heard, then you ain’t no cattle man. Meh, I’m over that. Back to my Big City Sarcasm, I guess. BCS if you watch college football. Go Longcats! I don’t know what or who the Longcats are, but it sounds smart. Around here, we are not smart, we merely sound smart! Deal with it!
So, starting about dozen years ago, I’d highlight the top rookie in all of baseball coming into the year and it was super obvious for about a decade. From Mike Trout through Corbin Carroll, I nailed each one, but everyone sorta did, if I’m being humble. Last year, I said, “There’s no top rookie for fantasy baseball, if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, and, let’s hope I did, because I’ve already drank the tea so I can’t re-read them.” And that’s me quoting me! I went over a bunch of rookies last year, but, as predicted, there was no consensus rookie for redraft leagues. The most votes from prospect people who I asked went to two guys; JJ Wetherholt and Sal Stewart. Everyone also agreed that if he was called up early enough, Konnor Griffin would be a force. So, long story short, last year’s rookies were tough to figure. First three rookies I went over last year were Wetherholt, Stewart and Bryce Eldridge, and I like to go over the top guys first, so did I do well with those three? I’d say well enough. If you disagree, let me raspberry my lips for you.
How does this relate to this year? It looks like there’s a no clearcut rookie once again. If Jesus Made was definitely breaking camp, he’d be the top guy. No one seems to think he will break camp. At this time last year, no one thought that Konnor Griffin would be up until June, so things change. If in March Made’s ETA changes, I’ll talk about him in March with prolly a title like, March Made’ness. So, rather than say one guy is the number one rookie, I will cover a bunch of rookies in the upcoming weeks for redraft leagues, and try to give you the top guys first then interesting but a little more question marky guys next. That’s right! You’re reading something that uses “question marky.” Deal with it! And welcome to our 2027 fantasy baseball rookie outlook series where I will cover all the 2027 rookies who will be worthwhile for 2027 fantasy baseball redraft leagues. I am not the prospect guy. That is Itch. I am not the keepers guy, that’s Jakkers. I’m just your standard, noobiot redraft guy. So, even though there is no top prospect right now, I had to cover someone first. Guess who that is? For those with Title Blindness: Sebastian Walcott is your top rookie for 2027 fantasy baseball who may or may not be your top rookie for 2027 fantasy baseball, but he’s the first guy I’m going over and he looks solid. And for those who like a segue with their hedges: So, what can we expect from Sebastian Walcott for 2027 fantasy baseball?
First off, I hate the stadium. I’m not going to sit and stew over the negatives for longer than this. It’s the only negative. It’s a negative that I think affected Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter, and everyone I talked to agreed that Sebastian Walcott was not either of those guys. Walcott is a special case. This Walcott ain’t no Murphy Bed, though, if I’m being honest, that is a good nickname. So, let’s look at some of the Murphy Bed’s highlights:
It’s Sebastian Walcott’s world again! Welcome back! 💣

Yeah, still 20. Honestly, I had to fight myself not to post another five dozen clips. Here’s one more you have to see:
🔊🆙 for a Sebastian Walcott 115 mph RBI single

A 20-year-old hitting 115 MPH singles? Oh…[opens a sandwich shop that turns into a national chain over 50 years only to get put out of business after three months with a private equity firm]…kay. So, to recap, gobsmacking. Sebastian Walcott’s going to be a top 20 player for quite a few years. My hesitation about a Rangers player, due to Wyatt Langford? It went out the window after I saw The Murphy Bed. This is not Wyatt Langford. Wyatt Langford is Brooks Lee compared to Sebastian Walcott. This guy has 70-grade power who can chuck in 40 steals if he wants.
Only drawback is he has some swing and miss tendencies. Ya know, the tendies no one wanted twenty years ago, but no one cares about now. Is he a shortstop in the Elly De La Cruz mode? No, I don’t think so. I don’t like to throw around big-time comps, but he reminds me of Fernando Tatis Jr. If you wanna do the Elly thing, though, Elly had a 30.9 K% as a 20-year-old in Double-A. The Murphy Bed had a 22.8 K% in Double-A as a 20-year-old. Seems a bit better! (Walcott also had a 9.9 BB%. C’mon, this guy’s special.) Itch had him as the 5th best prospect on his top 25 prospects for 2026 fantasy baseball. He said previously, “Walcott signed for $3.2 million in 2023 out of the Bahamas and climbed swiftly through the system until 2025 when he got a full season to settle in at Double-A, where he slashed .255/.355/.386 with 13 home runs and 32 stolen bases in 124 games. The line might not leap off the page, but he was ten percent better than league average playing against guys who were 4.9 years older than him, on average. That’s future superstar stuff from a kid who’s already 6’4” and 190 pounds with double plus raw power and easy speed alongside smooth actions on the infield, and I’m gonna use all my raw power to put down the evil tyranny of Grey.” What?
So, the one huge question mark and why I almost didn’t make Sebastian Walcott my first rookie write-up is his ETA in the majors. I like to focus on redraft rookies and a big part of redraft rookie value is them starting the year on the MLB roster. (As I said, I consult many people for these and Itch wanted me to put someone else as the first rookie outlook, and I will get to that player and more.) Walcott is ready now, but the Rowdy Tellez in the room is will he be on the MLB roster to start the year? I don’t know. No one really does. If the lockout gets, uh, unlocked, and he signs a team-friendly, long-time contract, then he’s on the Opening Day roster. Or maybe the Rangers just flip the switch and unleash The Murphy Bed because he’s ready. I’m going aggressive here and, especially in early redrafts, I’m grabbing him. For 2027 fantasy baseball, I’ll give Sebastian Walcott projections of 54/17/51/.254/22 in 404 ABs with a chance for much more or less, depending on his MLB arrival date.
Good stuff Grey! For early DCs, is SeaWall someone to jump on between picks 101-150 or 150-200?
I think early enough you’re fine waiting until 150, but as the months go on, I’m sure that’ll move up
Happy “new” year Mr. G !!??!! Ha! First off I won my dynasty league and used your wisdom quite often so thank you! 2nd one is our full dyno of 16 years!!! Second- I love me some Murphy Bed! Glad I grabbed him a couple yrs ago and trusted the injury was going to be ok. And it appears just that… I really hope he shifts to 3rd since I have E! @ short and he has my heart as well!
Anywho! Looking forward to your words and thoughts in ‘27! You are a ripper and best in the BIZ! Cheers!!!!
