SAGNOF: Stash Season

The parade of prospects getting call ups early this season has been eventful, to say the least. Some are already back down. Don’t let that discourage you from hunting for the next FAAB target a week early. Speed can be an easier skill to translate at the big-league level if you can find ways to get on base. I’m not a prospect expert, check out Mike’s work for that. Still, it’s never a bad time to gamble on a young guy with potential.

• Mallex Smith’s recall from Triple-A is imminent. He showed the organization what they needed to see slashing .361/.395/.500. He was rage dropped fairly widespread. Go check your waiver wire for a guy that’s never been consistent but often effective.
• This week’s bad catcher with lots of games is Yasmani Grandal. The Brewers are on the road all week with four games in Philadelphia and three in Atlanta. Odubel Herrera and Cesar Hernandez get a slight bump in the starting lineup conversation.
• Charlie Tilson has swiped three bags in seven games since his call up. Getting on-base at .407 clip helps. He’s a speed only option, but if you roster a specialist he better be effective with his tool.
• Part of Welington Castillo losing more time to the hot James McCann could be related to his defense. Hitting .164 doesn’t help his cause either. Consider McCann the White Sock if you’re hurting at catcher (who isn’t?).
• With A.J. Pollock out, Chris Taylor is getting more at-bats for the Dodgers. I’d keep him in mind against lefties or a weak battery. He can still swipe a base even if his hit tool won’t be what it was in 2017.
• If you’re looking for a stash, Franklin Barreto may be on the verge of getting yet another call up with the A’s. Jurickson Profar is squandering his thousandth opportunity at a starting job with the yips in the field little production at the plate. The organization still seems to believe in Barreto, the centerpiece of their return for Josh Donaldson so time ago. He has 6 stolen bases at Triple-A this year even with an up and down on-base percentage.
• Steve Cishek notched his first save in Pedro Strop’s absence. He’s the main target for saves chasers in that pen. Should you want to save a buck it’s worth kicking the tires on Carl Edwards, Jr. His demotion is a turnoff to most, but he’s been perfect since returning to the bigs. We know Joe Maddon likes to tinker.
