I’m going to rename this season the “Fury” year. As in, it’s a full-blown tank for me! What a good movie… Anyway, the REL keeps trucking along with some big FAAB buys in the AL that is still being dominated by the Orange Birds. Bird of Prey! Although the pair of Sox teams are clippin’ at their talons… In the NL, it’s all Nats and Cubs with the Nats getting 20 Ks from one player last night. Yeesh. Here’s how week six went down in the 2016 REL League:

Well, I put down the dynamite, ran the cord, and blew this shizz up! At first, I wanted to contend for a decent finish to chase after our 5-year payout pool, but after seeing how disastrous the Brewers pitching is this year, I knew I had to go full-tank. I was already down that road after trading away Lucroy for an 18-year-old, but I made it a fully-blown reality by trading away the Brewers 2nd and 3rd biggest offensive contributors in a series of 3 trades this past week:
Chris Carter + Brandon Maurer for Alex Reyes Jonathan Villar for Alex Guerrero + Nick Plummer Michael Blazek + Damien Magnifico + Victor Roache for Matt Adams Ugh, apparently I just want to hoard Cardinals players, which goes against every fiber of my being. But ya know, better I own them than anyone else! The big get is obviously Alex Reyes. I had been aggressively shopping for a pitcher prospect in a pitcher’s park that could possibly be my front line ace. Miller Park might just be the second worst pitching situation behind Coors. So getting a guy in a pitcher’s park with clear ace potential was a nice get for me, even with the whole “no such thing as a pitching prospect” mantra. In the second deal, mayyyyybe I should’ve tried to hold Villar a little closer for a deadline deal, but I wanted to get Guerrero in FAAB and waited too long. He’s been mixed-league relevant before and maybe, just maybe, he’s either traded or signs with another team down the road for a full-time job. I also get a first-round picked, young OF in Plummer. And the Cards, as I sadly know too well, can develop guys like no other. Finally, I make a seemingly counter-intuitive deal for a tank team. But I was looking through CI fliers since I gave up my 1B and 3B and took a shot on Adams. Yes, he might be destined for AL DHing duties down the line, but he’s a competent 1B. It’s murky there in St Louis at 1B right now, and even though Fat Adams hasn’t ever gotten to his power potential, he’s been a solid overall hitter most of his career. I gave up two relievers and a farm guy that I’m not sure ever impacts the Majors, so it felt like a good low-end deal to take a shot filling the Carter hole. My 2016 team is now a dumpster fire. Now it’s up to FAABing and moving my final pieces to prepare for 2017 and most likely 2018. Everyone not named Ryan Braun is for sale! |

Well here we are a little over a month in and this is why I find this league so interesting. My team is pretty good just like the “real” Indians. And just like the “real” Tribe my bullpen is somewhat of a mess and I don’t really have a big bat. I have good depth and a decent minor league system. We’ve been bouncing around from as high as first to around 5th spot which is where we are now. So let’s see if I can do better than the my favorite heart breaking real team.
The REL Indians are in it to win it, so we are putting many guys on the block. If you are rebuilding, you need to at least be checking in with us. I’ll list a few here. Young guys on my active roster like Arcia, Cuthbert, Montero, House, Rondon, and Armstrong can all be moved. Arcia and Cuthbert are up now and playing well. Many of the rest of these guys will be up this season in my opinion. I would say that no player on my minor league keepers are off limits. Zimmer being the toughest get of course but he can be had as well. Honestly we will discuss anyone on our roster except Lindor and it would need to be a game changer to get one of our top 3 starters. Our number 1 need is a big bat for the middle of our lineup. If you are looking for smaller deal we need bullpen (S/H) help as well. |

So last week I was torn on which way to go with my freed up roster spot. Should I pick up player A or player B. Both guys, though different, seem to have about the same ceiling at this point. I was torn. It was really a 50-50 split for me. I ended up going with the guy I thought had a clearer path to playing time at some point. The guy I didn’t choose was of course Cheslor Cuthbert who immediately got called up when MooseTacos got injured. I would have gotten him for free. Since I missed him I put in a bid the next go round, and I thought my $11 would have a decent shot, but unfortunately he went for $20. Damn…
On to what happened with the guys who are actually on my team. The Toronto Blue Jays (the real ones) are hitting .234 on the season so far, good enough for 3rd worst in the American League. That is what my team is aspiring to, though we have a very long way to go since we are dead last in the league with a woeful .220 batting average (the only team under .230!). Once again my teams 6th place position is buoyed by the pitching staff who’ve racked up 62 of a possible 75 points. While the bats have managed a meagre 30.5 out of 75 points, dragged down by the 1 in batting average and not helped much by the middle of the pack standing in the power categories. Still a little mind boggling. I’d also like to take a moment to write about the exciting things going on with all my high ceiling prospects that are tearing it up in the minors. [twiddles thumbs] Ummmmmmmm. [checks watch] Okay, I’m done going over those guys now. Honestly I weep a little every time I look at my prospects, but that’s a story for another day. Until next week… |
