The REL post is back, and we’ve got a team streaking! Unfortunately they’re streaking in Canada, which is only safe for nudity 1-2 months out of the year. Or else things might freeze off! It’s like that time when you sit your kids down to watch Frozen, except you rented the one where those moron college kids get stuck on a ski lift…
The NL remains the Nats league to lose creating a little distance from the Cubs, but with a week-long offensivee outburst, look out for the Blue Jays! They’re clipping on the Orange Birds’ heals (er, ummmm, talons) for the top spot in the AL. Here’s how week 11 went down in the 2016 REL League:

The rebuild continues as I was able to sell a hot bat in Matt Adams and a Brewers set-up guy/jiggy with it Will Smith for a pair of Marlins prospects. I’m not 100% sold on his “1B of the future” value, but Josh Naylor – as long as he doesn’t play pranks anymore and cut other prospects’ fingers off – is pretty interesting. I really struggled finding 1B options in the Minor Leagues to trade for, but Naylor was towards the top of my list – good plate discipline, showing power already (7 HR) and only 18 years old. After being internally-suspended 10 days, he is only 1-10 his first two games back, so hopefully he learns from being a “prankster” and doesn’t go into a slump.
The big get was who I had my keen, prospect eye on. Chris Paddack. Absolutely THRILLED he’s joining the Crew whilst pitching in the Crayola Canyon. His last start he pitching 5 no-hit innings with 11 K and 1 BB. After a solid showing in the rookie league last year, he has a 1.47 ERA and 31:2 K:BB in 18.1 innings in A ball. He’s clearly passed Tyler Kolek as the pitcher to own in their system and I think might be their #1 prospect. I just looked at the Marlins’ prospect list on their site, and they have him 18!!!!!!!!! Absurdity! And probably a good bit out of date… While re-shaping my roster to keep it legal with the prerequisite Brewers and position players I needed, I sadly dropped Tyler Anderson and he was called up this week. Looked great in his debut, but I shouldn’t lament on it too much – he’s 26 with several injury issues in his past and obviously pitches in Coors. Still woulda been a nice surprise to have a starter I added for nothing a few weeks ago. The active roster looks pretty atrocious, but the farm is looking mighty tasty. As a few owners know, I am shopping Braun a little trying to find a “slam dunk” deal and finalize my rebuild efforts, but I will be stingy with him for the prospects he could get if dealt. So if you have youth and want to win now – feel free to offer! I respond quickly and will consider anything! |

So it is June 16th and the Orange Birds are still in first place. However, the Blue Jays have come alive this past week and really closed the gap. I figured it was only a matter of time the lead was cut because I have yet to make a trade to commit to winning this season and there is only so much that can be done on the waiver wire in this format. I am still last in steals and that is really preventing me feeling great about my chances this year. I am looking to acquire any stolen base threats that could help make an impact, ideally at short stop, as well as any starters that can help for at least this year. A few weeks ago I did mention I’d be willing to deal Hunter Harvey. That offer is still open to any owners who are interested. I received a few offers already from various teams, but one does seem to stand out above the others. It is not too late to try to acquire Harvey from me as I will hear offers through the weekend.
Blue Jays | 117 | Waiver Adds and Prospect Callups Past Week: |
FAAB Remaining: | $95 | Kaleb Cowart LAA – 3B NA $0, Odrisamer Despaigne Bal – SP,RP $1 |
It’s definitely been a good week in the standings, mostly in the last few days actually. My guys have somehow climbed to within 4 games of the mighty Orioles. The pitching continues to lead the way with 70/75 possible points, but the hitting is starting to improve overall. I’ve gotten out of the basement in AVG, managing a season high of thanks to climbing from the .220s to the .240s, woohoo! Most impressive might be that despite not having any speedsters on my team I’ve climbed to 5th overall in steals thanks to random steals from slow people. Again, woohoo!
Personnel wise, I added Kaleb Cowart because he’s playing well in the minors, he’s young, and he’s not really blocked by much at 3B for the Angels. I also added Odrisamer Despaigne (which is hard to type even when you know how to spell it) after Vance Worley went down. Worley will be sorely missed as a SP eligible reliever on my team, but hopefully OD (much easier to spell) will step up for the O’s. How often do you get to say that, Vance Worley will be sorely missed by my fantasy team, haha. My hitting resurgence has been led by a trio of Jays in the last week. Edwin has gone 10/5/11/2/.391, Donaldson went 8/2/10/2/.370, and Russ Martin showed some signs of life by going 5/1/8/1/.385 finally. Other than that, I think the biggest thing that helped was not having 5 or 6 guys hit in the .100s all week like I have for most of the season. Draft wise, I wasn’t overly thrilled with what the Jays did, though I did like a handful of their picks. I like the T.J. Zeuch pick in the first round, nothing wrong with a 6’7″, 220lb hard throwing lefty. Big fan of that pick. I was not a fan of the J.B. Woodman pick in the second round at all. Maybe his late season hitting from last year is just the first sign of what’s to come, but I’d put more stock in his poor Cape Cod showing when he had to hit with wood bats. There were also a bunch of other guys I would have preferred there too, I’m looking at you Bryan Reynolds! I will say though, we did manage to snag Dante Bichette’s son Bo, as well as Craig Biggio’s son Cavan. So one can hope that they are their father’s sons, though I have my doubts about that. |

We drop from 2nd to 3rd this week. The only thing more frustrating than being a Cleveland fan is having your fantasy team also being affected by their play. Not counting our closer we have to have the worst bullpen in baseball. Shaw and McAllister have been garbage but we are going to continue to stick by them… We are willing to trade our prospects for players better than ours… This Cavs series has me on edge. That’s all I can muster today. Go Cavs and screw Draymond!

Interestingly enough, the categories that I figured we’d be strongest in (pitching) are some of our weakest, and power is one of the strongest. Go figure. We’re left with an interesting dilemma at this point… As a middle of the pack team, do we try to contend or throw in the towel for this year. It’s a rough choice, since I do think our pitching will turn around. However, it’s going to be hard to get back into that top group. For now, I’ll just say that we’re open to both win now or win later trades. Feel free to shoot us some offers!

While I must confess that I was not a Royals fan before taking over this REL Franchise, I have spent the last month getting up to speed on the organization, the roster, and the prospects. An oddity that I noticed right away was that my fantasy team surged on the days the Royals played at home and cratered during their road trips.
Decided to check their home/road splits and…Holy Cow!…they are the best home team in baseball with a 22-7 home record! That’s even better than the Cubs at Wrigley…who are better than the 1927 Yankees if you believe the hype (but let’s see them win at least one playoff series before we go that far). Unfortunately, in a league as deep as this, there is no way I can use this information in any meaningful way to my advantage, but in a shallower league, would definitely look at starting as many Royals as possible for home games (and benching them for road games). Since MLB league rules unfortunately require the Royals to also play 81 road games, I’m realistic about my chances (or lack thereof) for this year, and looking out to 2017/2018. Biggest single need for my roster, both active and farm system, is young outfielders. I’m willing to trade pitching, pitching prospects, and Eduardo Nunez to address that need. I did acquire Oswaldo Arcia from the Indians for pitching prospect Alec Mills. While I like Mills, couldn’t pass up on Oswaldo’s as yet untapped power potential. May not happen for him with the Twins, but kind of expecting him to get traded at some point, preferably to an AL East team! |
