The Sting of Queens
Tommy John Surgery, “Hey, has anyone seen Billy Wagner’s arm?” All Pitcher Arms ignore Tommy John Surgery as they continue to read Men’s Fitness Magazine. Tommy John Surgery, “Well, it’s important he gets this message. His arm’s not going to get better without me.” Other Pitcher Arms whistle. Tommy John Surgery, “I will not be ignored!” Then Tommy John Surgery boiled Billy Wagner’s Arm’s Rabbit and followed his kid to a local carnival. Now it looks like Billy Wagner’s career is in danger. Ayala should continue to get the bulk of the saves, but always keep this in mind, Ayala is just not that good. Even in keeper leagues, drop Wagner. He’s no good to you anymore, Tommy John Surgery came calling. Next year, the Mets will probably look to make Francisco Rodriguez the highest paid closer in baseball. Hey, I wonder if Tommy John Surgery and K-Rod were working together? Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
B.J. Upton – Out until the weekend with a strained quad. A B.J. quad strain is blue balls, no?
Emmanuel Burriss – For those who just lost Upton. Burriss got a steal yesterday. He might get 3+ steals this week. In all of my H2H leagues, I’m currently starting him. He goes from the Diamondbacks to the Padres later in the week. I could steal against the Padres; I’m not fast. (UPDATE: He was injured yesterday and is no longer a replacement option for Upton.)
Jack Wilson – Might be out for the season with a hairline fracture in his right index finger. Before you throw in the towel because you’ve lost Jack Wilson, take comfort in knowing you don’t own him on any team.
Tim Lincecum – 8.1 IP, 1 ER, 9 K and 126 pitches. I hope his innings/pitches this year don’t catch up to him next year. I do, because I think Lincecum could be special. With that said, why can’t these schmohawks limit him to 100 pitches when he’s up six runs? How much evidence do you need that high pitch counts lead to injuries? If you were making a run for the pennant, would you let him throw 180 pitches? Inconceivable!
Gary Sheffield – 2 HRs. Afterward Sheff said, “Sheff tried to hit the white off the baseball.”
Jon Lester – 7.2 IP, 9 Ks, 0 ER. Looks like Lester didn’t ask Make-A-Wish for just a no-hitter, but a whole season of productivity.
Jeremy Guthrie - Not pitching tomorrow because he has the “flu.” That’s short for he has a crapload of innings on his arm. If you’re still waiting around for him in leagues, I wouldn’t anymore.
Kevin Gregg – Will return on Tuesday and Fredi Gonzalez said he’ll continue to use Matt Lindstrom as the closer. Why? Because Gonzalez is in a H2H matchup and he owns Lindstrom, obviously.
Dave Bush – 8 IP, 2 ER. It’s only fitting that Bush comes right before Wood.
Brandon Wood – 2 HRs. I told you to pickup Brandon Wood on Friday, since then he has three HRs.
Yusmeiro Petit – 2 2/3 innings and 5 ER. And we might see Jobacum again after all. (Yes, Jobacum just came after Bush and Wood. And that’s how you make a triple-decker double entendre sandwich.)
Matt Antonelli – 1-for-21 since being called up. Don’t worry, Padres. You still have the future promise of Khalil Greene.
Albert Pujols – Said he’s considering Tommy John surgery in the offseason. Wasn’t Wagner enough for you, you monster?!

Started Lincecum and Lester today with confidence, but had some problems with Petit as I started him on 3/4 teams. He really hasn’t been very good lately!
And Sheffield hit the league’s 250,000th homer tonight…good for him!

@Grey: Dunno if you recall, but asked you yesterday about the dropability (or otherwise) of Markakis. Your advice was to keep him.
What are your thoughts on Burrell right now? He has the ability to get super-hot, but there’s not much time left…

@Steve: I’m in the same BurrellBoat. I’m keeping him on the bench, just in case…
Here’s an annoying glitch in Yahoo! (Not sure if it’s the same in other leagues.) Upton is hurt but not DL bound. So I need to pick up a replacement 2B for the week. Except I can’t do that until I activate Longoria, who’s no longer on the DL but who, according to their notes:
3B Evan Longoria was activated from the DL over the weekend but likely will be limited to late-inning defense and pinch-running until Friday
So I have to drop two useful players just to pick up one 2B and watch both Upton and Longo sit on my bench. Well, at least I should win the category of “Late-Inning Defense” this week.
Here’s a question, Yahoo!: Why can’t I keep a guy on my DL as long as I want? Just because his team activates him, why do I? Why, Yahoo!, why?
Grrrrr. Or, more appropriately, Grrrr!

Not sure who to start in RF today. Markakis, going against Sowers from Cleveland who he’s hit 1 for 8 against lifetime….or Ethier who’s gone 2 for 3 against LeBlanc. It’s a small sample size and Ethier’s supposed to suck against lefties but it seems he’s mashing right now no matter who’s on the mound. Meanwhile Markakis is Markakis but that hasn’t been that great of a thing the past week since he’s gone 2-19.
Is Ethier (the hot bat) the right move here?
[Reply]
@Steve: Guess it depends who you’re replacing him with.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: I believe ESPN lets you leave a player on the DL as long as you like, but I do think they should be activated when the team activates them. I agree with Yahoo? Yikes!
@knighttown: Burriss, Aviles, Wood then Lopez.
@Frank Rizzo: Ethier is the hot bat right now. You gotta go with what’s hot.
[Reply]
@knighttown: This just in — Giants rookie SS Emmanuel Burriss left Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks in the top of the sixth inning with a strained muscle in his left side that could cost him the rest of this season. He hurt himself swinging and grimaced in pain while running out a ball after batting in the bottom of the fifth. Burriss was scheduled for an MRI exam Tuesday. “It’s tough,” he said. “I had come this far and I was trying to go out with a bang. To stop short kind of hurts.”
****Don’t pick up Burriss.

Replace Upton with which schmohawk?: Ian Stewart, Jerry Hairston, Felipe Lopez, Asdrubal Cabrera, Clint Barmes, or Alexi Casilla? Something stinks in here, and I think it’s all of these guys.
[Reply]
September 9th, 2008 at 8:58 am
I guess that leaves good ol’ Mike Aviles, a Razzball special. Like Dickerson, he’s a guy that I never would have noticed but could appear on many winning teams this year. Thanks!

@Shogun: Punt? Asdrubal, Lopez, Barmes, punt.

Which SP eligible reliever I can slip into a SP slot the rest of the way. Only care about WHIP and vulture wins (not Baron Von Vulture Wins, who I could care less about, the Canadian wanksta).
Bucholz or Kuo?
[Reply]
September 9th, 2008 at 9:09 am
@Grey: Yeah, it’s an ugly list of names. Fortunately, I just dropped a pitcher I had streamed and was going to drop anyway and took a flier on Hairston, hoping that he’d steal a couple of bases before I get a BJ back. That’s really all Upton was giving me anyway.
Do any Reds fans – c’mon, there must be at least one of you left – know if Hairston can run on that gimpy leg?
[Reply]
@knighttown: Kuo
@Shogun: I’d look at Ivan Ochoa or Asdrubal if you just want steals. Hairston’s had too many leg problems to trust right now.
[Reply]
September 9th, 2008 at 9:19 am
@Shogun: Looks like we’re trying to patch the same hole. I thought my problem was solved with Burriss at the top of the page but a few page downs later I’m back up our favorite creek without a paddle.
Does anybody else think the real meaning of that saying is that even without a paddle you can get back down the creek but your hands are going to end up really dirty and really stinky? I think that view is appropriate here. I dont have to stay up shit creek, it just means using Asdrubal Cabrera. Now thats a stinky/dirty handful.
[Reply]
September 9th, 2008 at 9:29 am
@pork burn: Well put. As a sometimes canoeist, one thing to bear in mind is not only would your hands stink, but getting downstream usually requires some wading. Worse yet, sometimes the canoe tips over and your entire body get submerged. That’s why shit creek is never a good place to be.

Ive just been murdered by MI injuries this year. Who do you like of the following to provide solid play the rest of the year (you think you got it bad on the FA wire Shogun..:-})? Blake DeWitt, Nick Punto, Joe Inglett or Sean Rodriquez?
[Reply]
@ShootyBabbit: DeWitt, punt.
Are Ivan Ochoa and Cabrera both gone?
[Reply]
September 9th, 2008 at 10:47 am
@Grey: Cabrera is gone. Ochoa is there but is an OBP/SLG league and I am hanging leading in both catergories currently but could slip a place or two. I thought about Ochoa but his OPS is south of .600. Any love @ all for Inglett? He is leading off for a team playing very well, close to double digit steals (9) and sports a .777 OPS. I hadnt paid him much mind before today but???

@ShootyBabbit: Gotcha, I thought it was a standard roto. I’d then go DeWitt, Inglett, punt.

@Grey: Am looking at your boy Wood (that didn’t come out right, did it?). He’s 3B eligible too and is hotter than my Atkins right now.
Have Ethier in my LF slot right now, so I’m fine there – I guess keeping Burrell stops him getting hot for someone else.

@Grey: [Shakes fist at sky] BURRRISSSS!
So now my Upton/Longo Activation Misadventure costs me another player! I dropped Burriss and picked up Felipe Lopez. Then I dropped Ian Stewart and picked up Wood. I probably should have just dropped Burriss for Wood, and moved Stewart to 2B (he’s playing 3B for me now) (yes, it’s a grim time for the Baron’s minions).
Now I’ve got Wood at 3B, Hardy at SS, and Lopez at 2B. Longo better defy all predictions and logic and hit 8 HRs after he comes back. From a wrist injury. You know, like Big Papi did.
Blurgh.

Anyone see Karabell’s comments on Brandon Webb?: “He might still win the Cy Young award — I really want to choose CC Sabathia, and Tim Lincecum is certainly a factor, but time will tell”
Lincecum is only “a factor”?! How is lil’ Timmy not the favorite at this point? He’ll top 250 K’s and has a shot at being a 20 game winner for a team that is 17 games below .500!
Also, I’m impressed by Sabathia’s resurgence, but I don’t see how you can either reward him for a <half season (if considering only the NL stats) or overlook his rough start (if you consider everything).

Bay puts the Sox over the pesky Rays in the 8th. I know I know, not many Sox fans here but what the hell I’m psyched.
[Reply]
@wassup: He’s also too unpredictable, that’s why I don’t pick him up. If you want to risk that he bounces back in his next game, hold onto him. He has bounced back from bad starts this year and it doesn’t matter who his opponent is when he does it. You are also running the risk of picking up Millwood and having him get rocked and then you’re doubling your agony.
[Reply]
@BSA: Wheeler totally coughed that one up. Will be interesting to see if this plays in the Rays’ psyche in the playoffs.

September 9th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
@Grey: Nope, but Mike Gonzalez already blew a save for me tonight, and I own Wheeler in another league. This is the downside of being a save vulture. It’s probably how Josh Hamilton used to feel when he was smokin’ crack: a quick, fun high when he’d land a cheap score, and then disappointment when its high baking soda content brought him down hard and fast.
