The Razzball Pod is back, and we open with the somberest of news with the tragic passing of Jose Fernandez and what it meant to the baseball community.  But hopefully all of our saddened feelings can be assuaged by remembering why we love fantasy baseball, and thinking ahead of what will come in 2017!  On today’s show, we mock the first 3 rounds of the 2017 Fantasy Baseball Draft!  As you’d expect, Grey constantly smatters me with “I hate that pick” of which he gets an armageddon of gongs.  THE GONG WILL BE HERE FOREVER, GREY!  Here’s our latest edition of the Razzball Baseball Podcast, now with more – you guessed it – gongs!

Miggy has hit .300 each of the last 8 seasons. Goldy actually did not qualify in 2014.

Also, just because Grey pronounces it “Encarcion,” doesn’t mean you have to.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@VinWins: Wow, Miggy is a machine! I wonder if any others. And wow, he had over 400 ABs, surprised that wasn’t enough.

Hahaha crap, did I say it the Grey way? He tricked me!

      • VinWins

        VinWins says:

@JB Gilpin: I don’t think there were any others in each of the last 4 seasons.

You need 502 plate appearances; Goldy had 469.

@VinWins: Ah gotcha, yeah I don’t know the benchmarks for qualifiers that well haha

@Eazy: Gotcha, yeah im sure a quick Google could catch me up, but I’m so unfocused on real-life MLB stuff sometimes haha

Grey & JB, Fantastic podcast!! SO GOOD!! Really enjoyed it. Loved the mock draft!

    My takes from it all:

Loved Grey’s draft! Besides the obvious top studs, Trout, Harper, Goldy, Bryant, Rizzo, & Miggy, NICE…Seager, Odor and Correa, SWEET! NO SP’s, that is awesome…SP’s are so deep!

Not as happy with JB’s, .Love the Manny, Nolan, Villar & Turner picks.. Not a big fan of Murphy, Pollock, Bum and Dozier for 2017. JB, you need a better list..hehe

    Jeopardy – DO IT!!

Question, would Jofer have gone in the first 36 for 2017?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Malicious Phenoms: Thanks so much man, appreciate you listening! Although your feedback on the mock leaves something to be desired :) I liked those Seager and Correa picks too ya know! Odor was the only one I was iffy on.

Oh JoFer would 100% be in the top 36! Probably top 20 for me…

      • Malicious Phenoms says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: I know, I just couldn’t resist, especially after Grey was taking your picks right before you and frustrating the hell out of you..

Anyway it was all in good fun! I really enjoyed it!!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Malicious Phenoms: Haha, can’t believe he sniped me a few times! Was surprising. Sounds like we have a pretty clear top 10 though!

          • Malicious Phenoms says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yup, very clear top 10, you could flip flop some here and there, but that is prolly the top ten for most 2017 drafts..

  3. William Hung says:

I’m in a 10 team keeper league where we can keep 2.

I currently have Rizzo, Betts, Blackmon, and Turner – I thought Betts and Rizzo were my slam dunk keepers, but now I don’t know. Do I roll Turner and Betts?

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@William Hung: No worries! I obviously love me some Turner, and Blackmon I really REALLY like too, but I think it’s indeed pretty slam dunk-y. Betts and Rizzo for me too

    • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
      (link)

@William Hung: Defer to the maestro Gray of course, but I happen to be in a very similar situation. Re: Rizz v. Turner, I think there’s something to be said for the bank-ability of Rizzo’s very high floor of ~.280+ 30+ and ~200 R+RBI, particularly in a shallow keepers.

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@William Hung: @Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Yeah exactly, it’s so much safer, plus you have the speed of Betts and maybe 10-15 from Rizzo as well, so not like you’re strapped for speed in the draft

  5. Ralph Lifshitz

    Ralph Lifshitz says:

Am I insane for liking Arenado more than Bryant next year? It’s a splitting hairs type of situation, but I just prefer him a touch.

@Ralph Lifshitz: Who would you rather have Meadows or C. Frazier in a dynasty?

      • JB Gilpin

        JB Gilpin says:
        (link)

@Ralph Lifshitz: @Grey: @Malicious Phenoms: Rappin Ralph, more like Lunatic Ralph! Hah yeah they’re razor close, win win either way.

I’d go Meadows I think, even in a crowded PIT OF

        • Ralph Lifshitz

          Ralph Lifshitz says:
          (link)

@JB Gilpin: It’s nuts how close they are, even their batted ball profiles are sot on. Bryant’s got the higher LD% by about 1%, and the lower GB% by about 2-3%. It’s so close. I’d rather have Bryant in dynasty, but I’m hoping I have the pick after Bryant goes next year so I can take Arenado and not question it.

          • JB Gilpin

            JB Gilpin says:
            (link)

@Ralph Lifshitz: Yeah I wouldn’t be unhappy either way. Unlike if I had glass teeth. I wouldn’t be too happy

        Ralph Lifshitz says:
        (link)

@Malicious Phenoms: I go Meadows, but it’s really close. His floor is higher than Frazier’s, though I think Frazier’s ceiling is higher.

  6. Dan says:
    (link)

Would you have Wil Myers shortly after your top 36?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Dan: Yeah I think he was my next highest, he was in my list of last 4-5 guys that weren’t drafted at 36 and Grey said I should take Polanco, so I went for it! Stronger second half and a little bit more track record and Myers would ABSOLUTELY be in the top20 or even top 25

  7. Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
    (link)

Haven’t listened yet, but overjoyed to see Grey pick Story ahead of his novio Stanton (can you tell I have one, but not the other in a keeper?)

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Haha yeah the Story pick surprised me! Grey loves his Coors, and he’s almost always right about those guys… Hvaing a tough time disputing it!

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Particularly when you see that SB count (and he didn’t even really start stealing until May). Planning to get as many of Dahl, Tapia, etc. as I can next year.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Yeah that was my reaction too! I forgot he had 8 steals. Man I hope they deal Cargo, Tapia is gonna be such a surprise if he can play every day.

          • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: Seems ripe for a $0 reserve round pick that then steps in when Cargo or someone gets injured.

  8. Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
    (link)

Whoops, JB – also curious where you view the following guys for next year (inserting keeper values to selfishly help my offseason decisions!) All of the below are fighting for my final keeper spot. My other keepers are Betts, Rizzo, Kershaw, Story, Khris, Moncada. Would prefer to keep a bat as my final keeper, but if you see greater value in one of the cheap arms, wouldn’t be against that either!

    BATS
    Schoop ($5)
Ozuna ($4 – fizzled, along with Schoop, as of late)
    M. Franco ($11)
    Tim Anderson ($8)
    Conforto ($4)
    Jankowski ($4)
    Keon Broxton ($5)

    ARMS
    Ian Kennedy ($3)
    Hammel ($5)
    Guerra ($5)
    Tyler Anderson ($4)

Thanks! Sad to see the podcast go in a couple eps!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Damn, nice set of keepers to start with! Yeah the pitchers are definitely out. Guerra is the most interesting of the SP though…

Remember when the Marlins hyped Ozuna for 30/30?! HAHAHAHA. I’m having a tough time picking… But ya know what, F it, let’s go Conforto at $4! Yes he had a weird season, but crushed it when demoted. Obviously you can swap that one out if he projects to not be a mostly full time guy next year, but I imagine they give him the shot again.

We won’t be gone forever! We’ll pop in with some Winter pods, then 2017 preseason is right around the corner!

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Thanks! Threw in the towel mid season to settle for mid-level finish this year and capitalize on the Kershaw injury (previous owner going for title this year). Traded Stras + nonkeepable Salazar (immediately before injury/suckitude) and a very pricey Blackmon for Kershaw and small pieces. Felt pricey but worth it at the time . . . in retrospect given Strasburg, the only keeper I gave up, feels incredible!

Ooooooo surprised by that Conforto pick, but I like it! The other guys are all pretty similar, just at different positions (LOL @ Ozuna). I like Franco for 2017, but $11 isn’t going to be much less than what I could draft him for. Tim Anderson, Brox, Jank – all interesting too, but probably still cheap late round of draft (or reserve round) guys in a 12 teamer.

Thanks again! Will look forward to it! Seeing that I still inadvertently visit Gawker, I have no doubt I’ll be reading plenty of Razzball in the offseason

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Duda Want to Build a Snowman?: Damn, yeah that’s quite a deal! Yeah I hammer the pavement on non-keepers on the trade market haha.

Yeah if Franco was $4, I would go Franco, but he’s so blah in a blah offense. Broxton – yes I have bias – might have the most upside haha. But yeah, I can’t see keeping him. Hahahaha sounds like a plan man!

    Hey JB,

Not sure that you’ll even see this. But wanted your feedback. Already asked grey but wanted to see if you were on the same page

Which start do you like best
    A.Bradley vs SD
    K.Gausman @NYY
    [email protected]
I like Gausman best AND he has great numbers against the Yankees but worried that the wildcard will be wrapped up by then and that they will cut his start short. I need ratios but mainly the win.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jj: I see EVERYTHING my man! Haha.

Ugh. Yeah I like Gausman too, but damn it’s a tough call. I think manaea has best ratios. Bradley has about the same shot at a win, but man I hate him haha. I’ll stick with Gausman, but at this point of the season, you never feel great haha

So I’m currently at a soft opening for a restaurant in DC, called Ocean Prime (it’s phenomenal, I would highly recommend it), and all of a sudden, a remix of the Joe Ross song came on, and I completely lost it. Just died laughing in the middle of this restaurant that is way above what my wallet can afford. Ended up trying to explain why I was laughing to my girlfriend and couldn’t stop laughing for enough time to coherently get it across to her.

Thanks again for a phenomenal season and tons of laughs along the way. Pass this along to Grey as well, y’all are the best

@Odor’s Odor-izzi spray: Hahahahahaha AWESOME! That is incredible. I’ll be sure Grey sees this. We’ve got one last show to do for the year to wrap it up next Monday, then on to hopefully another fun season in 2017!
