Joaquin Benoit (+23%) was the most added player this week after Huston Street was traded to the Angels. Benoit was scooped up by those looking for saves obviously, but he’s a decent pitcher all around. Can he be trusted going forward? The big question isn’t whether we should pick up Benoit. That’s a no-brainer in the short term. No, the big question is will he actually remain with the Padres as their closer or will he be shipped out at the deadline to a contending team in need of bullpen help. I do not have the answer to that particular question, sorry. Teams like the Indians, Tigers, and Pirates (among others) have been linked to trade talks with the Padres regarding Benoit. Should he head somewhere and close it’s no big deal, but if he lands somewhere in a different role, it could kill some or even all of the saves value that makes him attractive target right now. To sum up, he’s a treasure if you need some cheap saves, but he could quickly turn to trash depending on how things shake out over the next two weeks and quite frankly, how many saves is he really going to rack up with the worst offense in baseball anyway? Here are this week’s other big adds and drops in 2014 fantasy baseball…

Jake McGee - 53% owned (+15%)

Get your rotten vegetables ready because this is the part where I try to play the contrarian and call a guy trash who actually appears to be pretty useful. McGee is getting some love in Tampa Bay save situations since he’s been the best reliever in their bullpen. The problem is that being the best reliever in a bullpen managed by Joe Maddon means that sometimes you’re going to be used outside of save situations to get through the heart of a lineup in the seventh or eigth inning. This happened Sunday. It’s kind of like when Mr. Burns pinch hits for Griffey with Homer. It looks odd, but it’s what “smart baseball managers do”. So while McGee has saved eight games already and has a killer 11+ K/9, he may frustrting if it’s just saves that you’re after. Yes, he’ll get more than most in the Rays pen but I think he’ll also be used outside of the ninth depending on the situation, which means this is still a closer by commitee of sorts. If you’re in need of some ratio help or you are in a saves plus holds league and seeing him in a non-save situation isn’t going to get your panties in a bunch, go for it. If you think there is such a thing as a singular Rays’ closer right now, I’m just not sure we can say that. TRASH.

C.J. Cron - 16% owned (-22%)

Do you have any vegetables left after the McGee rant? Good, because now I’m going to call Cron a treasure even though he is currently in the minor leagues. Sometimes teams have to make wacky moves and this feels like one of them. Needing relief pitching and having to send someone down meant Cron got the demotion, but I’d expect him to be back up sooner rather than later. Cron had nine home runs and 27 runs batted in across just 182 plate appearances, so it certainly wasn’t a matter of his performance. The 24-year-old shouldn’t be on the wire in keepers or dynasty leagues, but impatient owners are probably dropping him in redrafts with the demotion. If you can afford to, Cron is an easy add for teams needing a power bat for the stretch run. TREASURE.

    (42) Rizzo @Home facing Stults (Lefty)
    (65) Puig @PIT facing Worley
    (100) Springer @OAK facing Kazmir (Lefty)
    (103) Rios @NYY facing Cain
    (146) Polanco @Home facing Beckett
    (165) Moss @Home facing Oberholtzer (Lefty)

    Thanks Mike!

Rios and Moss. Not sure how banged up Springer is…might consider him.

I am almost forced to own McGee in one league where he is my 4th closer. h2h, and with the volitility of saves week to week you have to run as many as you can find and hope for the best. 12 teamer, and i think every playoff team has 3-5 guys who can get saves.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

of course. I think he’s a nice pickup actually.

he got the “trash” this week not cause I think he sucks or won’t get any saves, but more cause he might be getting labeled as the Rays’ “closer” and I’m not so sure they really have one, even if McGee is the closest thing to it

      • fausto says:
        (link)

@Mike: peralta to the dl might help that sitch out a bit at least make him “trashure”…

Is Joe Smith the Holds guy now in LAA with the addition of Street?

    • Mike

      Mike says:

I would think so, yes. Last couple games went extras, but in a normal situation I’d expect him in the setup role with Street closing.

    Hey Mike,

Would you pull the trigger for:
    Give Yu and Get Rizzo?
WHat if the other team includes with Rizzo, Morton or Miller? Which Sp?

    Thanks!

    • Mike

      Mike says:

Yup, I’d do it. I’d take Morton in redraft. Miller in keepers/dynasties

  5. Bob says:

Hey mike, would you look to make a trade to aquire Garrett Richards or Tyson Ross? If i do if be starting them at RP since they are both eligible there. My RP’s are Dallas keuchel & Alex wood.

    SP- Strasberg

    SP- cueto

    SP- Bumgarner

    RP- keuchel

    RP- Alex wood

Bench- Matt latos & tanaka (who’s on DL now)

Or to another owner trade Matt Holliday for either one of these; Jose Reyes, Adam laroche or neil walker: all three have similar stats too Holliday; but stats wise looks like Reyes & Holliday are the same here are the stats

    Holliday: BA- .268, HR:7, runs: 52, RBI:50

Reyes: BA: .271, HR:7, runs:52, RBI: 30, yeah Reyes has more SB’s 18 vs holliday’s 2, but these two seem very similar. That owner also has Starlin Castro.

    Thanks mike!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

yes, I’d look to acquire those arms. I’d be fine with trading Holliday. I’m not big on Reyes and you seem to have decent MI options.

      • Bob says:
        (link)

        @Mike:

        Thanks for the response mike!
You would do Holliday for either Richards or t Ross? Or am I low balling the Richards? I don’t mind low balling just don’t want to tick the owner off where trade talks are off –

I think awhile ago he said he wants my pedroia (huge sox fan he is(

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

I don’t think you’re low balling. Even though Holliday is an extra piece for you, he still has value.

what’s up Mike? asked JB this earlier, but in a 10-team, keep-10 (no limit) if I’m lower half of the table, should I just grab Buxton and wait it out?

And then in a 20-teamer, I’ve got Singleton destroying my UTIL – and I’m light at 3B (Dominguez) — and the next best 3B options are Harrison (just dropped), Bonifacio, and Gyorko… am I dropping Singleton or Dominguez for any of those?

And someone just dropped Everth Cabrera, and I’ve got Simmons and Segura — I feel like maybe I could drop Singleton/Dominguez for him?

Just looking at options for overall value.

    Thanks!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      hey Sheriff

I’d take a chance on Buxton if you’re at the bottom, yes.

Not sure if the 20-teamer is a keeper or not, but I’d stick with Simmons and Segura and hold onto Singleton personally

      • SheriffMcRawDawg says:
        (link)

@Mike: 20-teamer isn’t a keeper, just have to make a push for the playoffs and looking for a jolt. like most ppl here I was big on Gyorko early on so I’ll monitor and hope his little fweet stop huwting him. but you think dominguez is fine as he is right now?

also, Zunino or Jason Castro ROS?

        thanks again

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          haha…yeah, stick with Dominguez.

I’d lean Castro. I just realized you have a lot of Astros in that league

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

sounds like Wacha is out till September so that’s nice right there. I’d hold Calhoun.

I like the deal if you’re in need of a pitching boost, yes

  14. Mike, do I cut Taveras loose for Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson, Ian Desmond, or Todd Frazier for my UTIL spot? Oscar never gets to play. Also, do I drop Cain for Stroman, Taijuan Walker, Wade Miley, Kevin Gausman, or Odorizzi? 1 DL spot & already have Cashner & Gerrit Cole out. Thanks Mikey.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      anytime man

I’d swap Taveras for Frazier definitely

I’d cut Cain (assuming it’s the pitcher) for either Stroman or Odorizzi. can’t go wrong with either, although Odor pitches in a friendlier home park I think

      • Chicken Dinner says:

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d take a chance on Headley actually.

Gausman since it’s a keeper. Could be some rough patches but I really like him for the long haul.

  16. OT says:

Have been in talks to acquire Tulo, my MI needed an upgrade all around including steals (6×6 OPS). With him on the DL and about 63 games remaining (50 max for Tulo, so maybe 35?)…

is it a good idea to trade Kazmir $1 straight up.? My starting pitching is very strong, Kazmir is certainly one of the best in the league so far, and he is by far my best keeper value at pitcher. I understand Kazmir hasn’t pitched this much before, and I am willing to sacrifice to contend, but is it foolish to go after Tulo now when I possibly could get a Desmond/Alexei for possibly cheaper?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d do Kazmir for Tulo straight up all day every day. Kazmir could be $0 and I’d still do it.

              Mike says:
              (link)

@Mike: Thanks, me too. I think Wood could be a legit keeper too, he’s young and should be a regular in the rotation next year, no?

Hey Mike can you help me make a tough decision!
I have too many outfielders and I currently have no one at SS thanks to an injury so I need to cut an OF to pick up a SS. Its a10 team league with 3 outfield slots and I have Stanton, Bautista, Pence, Marte, K Davis, Polanco, and Calhoun

Ive tried to make trades but a lot of people are in the same position and dont need an OF so who is my drop?

    Thanks!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      yeesh. I guess Calhoun

    • Nick says:
      (link)

@Wacha Wacha: I’d giving a long, hard look at dropping Polanco over Calhoun. He did just go 2/4 with a HR, 3 runs, and 3 RBI tonight, but it’s the first signs of life I’ve seen from in awhile. Although, Calhoun probably isn’t much better, with less upside too.

  22. Nick says:
    (link)

    Good stuff, per usual, Mike.

Starters: Bumgarner, Verlander, Hudson, Ventura, Hammel, Roark

Relief: Janssen (Janssen, Reed, Doolittle, Melancon

Guy in my league wants to trade Lohse for one of my closers. All but Reed have a pretty decent ERA/WHIP, while Reed has the moves saves (23). Janssen is a bit low in K’s and only has 14 saves, but I’d hate to part with him.

    Thoughts? Thanks

    Hey Mike, everyone…..

Got a decision to make . There’s some guys on the wire and I’m trying to figure out if making a move would be the right thing to do for the stretch run. H2H Keeper league…. Hits, Avg, HR, RBI, SB, Runs…W, K, Svs, QS, ERA, Whip…My team right now is:

    C. Posey
    1b. Adams
    2b. Rendon
    3b. Arenado
    SS. D. Gordon
    Inf. Seager
    Of. Stanton, McCutchen, Werth
    UTL. A. Gordon, Gattis

    Bn. Bogaerts, Morse

Sp. Darvish, Scherzer, Weaver, Wood, Bailey, Roark, Alvarez, Hammel

    RP. Soria, Robertson, Soriano

I was wondering if Dropping Morse would be worth adding anyone of these guys: Batters: Byrd, H. Kendrick, Crisp, Yellich, Duda, Cron, Napoli, Pitchers: Colon, Colmenter, Miley, Ruby DLR, Chase Anderson, Smyly, or Joe Kelly?

Considering I lost a holds guy in Benoit, and Mcgee gets more saves than holds, should I wait and see if Benoit gets traded or drop rondon, who hasnt pitched since the 12th and has been shaky, to try to get more holds since i have pretty much have 4 closers now.

Options are cotts, giles, farquar, fien, romo
